Bangladesh forces 2,000 Rohingya off remote island

COXS BAZAR (AFP) - Bangladesh authorities have forced more than 2,000 Rohingya to leave a remote island where they were hiding out after fleeing violence in Myanmar, officials said Monday. The United Nations says 87,000 mostly Rohingya refugees have poured over the border into Bangladesh since the latest round of fighting broke out 10 days ago in Myanmars neighbouring Rakhine state. The vast majority have entered overland or by crossing the Naf border river. But as desperation grows, some are braving the open seas to reach the small island of St Martins nine kilometres (around six miles) off Bangladeshs coast.Officials said the islands 9,000 residents, who share close cultural ties with the Rohingya and speak a similar language, had been hiding around 2,000 recent arrivals but were ordered to give them up.The Rohingya are a mainly Muslim stateless ethnic minority who according to rights groups have faced decades of persecution in mainly Buddhist Myanmar. The head of the local council Noor Ahmad said mosque loudspeakers were used to ask residents to hand Rohingya arrivals over to the coast guard. They told us to help find the Rohingya by any means and bring them to the coast guard camp, said Ahmad.Another elected official, Farid Ahmed, said 2,011 Rohingya including children were rounded up at the coast guard headquarters on Sunday evening and taken away.Rohingya children were crying. But it is the government order. What can we do? Ahmed told AFP.They (Rohingya) said, where should we go? They (Myanmar forces) were killing us there. Our houses were burnt. They were firing at us.Both men said the Rohingya had been taken back to Myanmar on boats. One senior security official who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity said the Rohingya were taken back at night under escort from border security forces.Bangladesh coast guards have intercepted and turned away hundreds more refugees as they tried to approach the island, the official said.Bangladesh was already home to around 400,000 Rohingya before the current crisis and has made clear it does not want to take in more. But it has been unable to stem the flow of refugees desperate to escape renewed violence in Rakhine state, where they say their community has suffered massacres at the hands of Buddhist mobs and the military.Officials said the 2,011 Rohingya on the island had all arrived in the last few days. They were in different places in Saint Martins island and they were herded together, said district administrator Ali Hossain.Saudi condemnationSaudi_Arabia will continue its efforts to find a lasting solution to the plight of the Rohingya Muslims.— KSA Mission UN (@ksamissionun) September 2, 2017 Saudi Arabia has condemned attacks on Rohingya Muslims and states that efforts would continue to find a solution to the situation that would last.

Bangladesh reach 253-6 despite Lyon's five wickets

CHITTAGONG (AFP) - Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon claimed five wickets on a turning pitch but Bangladesh fought back to reach 253-6 at stumps on the opening day of the second Test.Lyon decimated Bangladeshs top order with four consecutive lbws before Sabbir Rahman and Mushfiqur Rahim put on 105 for the sixth wicket to steady the hosts in Chittagong.Monsoon rain could disrupt play on the second day, putting pressure on Steve Smiths men to polish off Bangladeshs tail early as they seek a win to equalise the two-Test series.Australia lost their first-ever Test against Bangladesh last week and dropped a fast bowler in Chittagong to strengthen their spin attack on a turning wicket.Lyon disposed of the four opening batsman before claiming his fifth in the last session when Sabbir was stumped. But skipper Mushfiqur Rahim remains an obstacle for the tourists, unbeaten on 62 and patiently holding together the innings.Nasir Hossain, the last recognised batsman, was the other not out player with 19 at close of play at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.Rahim and Sabbir displayed contrasting styles in their stand, with Sabbir playing adventurous shots and Rahim anchoring.Sabbir scored his 50 off only 62 balls but slowed as Rahim became more confident, smashing his own half-century off 124 balls.Sabbir dispatched Lyon for a six over long-on and Rahim hit two consecutive fours against Steve OKeefe.Lyon, the first off-spinner to open the Test bowling for Australia since 1938, finally removed Sabbir in the 82nd over when he was stumped by Mathew Wade.Lyon finished with figures of five for 77 off 28 overs. His scalps included Tamim Iqbal, one of the architects of Bangladeshs historic victory over Australia, who fell for just nine on his home ground. He also sent back Mominul Haque, who boasts the highest batting average of the Bangladesh team.Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar got the other wicket for Australia, as a three-pronged spin attack took the battle to the hosts.Agar dismissed Shakib Al Hasan, whose all-round heroics earned him man of the match in the first Test, for 24.Rahim had won the toss and opted to bat first on what looked like a spinners paradise. Bangladesh brought in Mominul in place of pace bowler Shafiul Islam.Australia picked spin bowling all-rounder Steve OKeefe, who replaced injured fast bowler Josh Hazlewood.Hilton Cartwright replaced out-of-sorts batsman Usman Khawaja, who scored just one run each in his two innings in the first Test.

Prince William, Kate expecting third child

LONDON (AFP) - Prince Williams wife Kate is expecting their third child, Kensington Palace announced on Monday, adding that she would not be attending a planned engagement due to morning sickness.William, 35, is second in line to the throne and the new baby will be fifth in line, bumping Williams younger brother Harry down the order of succession. The news comes at the start of the week that the royal couples eldest child, four-year-old Prince George, begins school in London. They also have a daughter, two-year-old Princess Charlotte.Their royal highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting their third child, the palace said in a statement. There was no immediate indication when the baby was due or whether it is a boy or a girl.Queen Elizabeth II, Williams grandmother, was said to be delighted at the news, as were members of both families.Prime Minister Theresa May was quick to offer her congratulations, saying in a message on Twitter: This is fantastic news. The palace confirmed that as with her previous two pregnancies, the duchess is suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum, an acute form of morning sickness.Kate, 35, was hospitalised with the condition during her first pregnancy in 2012, while it also forced her to cancel a trip to Malta when she was pregnant with Charlotte in 2014.Her royal highness will no longer carry out her planned engagement at the Hornsey Road Childrens Centre in London today, the palace said. The Duchess is being cared for at Kensington Palace.William and Kate moved back to London from their rural home in eastern England this summer as they take over more engagements from the ageing senior royals. The 91-year-old queen has reduced her public events in recent years and Prince Philip, her 96-year-old husband, officially retired in August.William gave up his job as an air ambulance pilot in July and relocated his family from Anmer Hall in Norfolk to their apartment at Kensington Palace.Prince George, the third in line to the throne, is due to begin school at the private Thomass Battersea school in south London on Thursday. There has long been speculation that William and Kate would like a third child. On a royal tour of Poland in July, the duchess -- who herself is one of three children -- joked about having another after being given a cuddly toy designed to soothe tiny babies.Saying thank you for the present, she turned to William and joked: We will just have to have more babies.Hyperemesis gravidarum causes excessive nausea and vomiting and affects around one in every 100 pregnant women, according to the state-run National Health Service (NHS).Some women report being sick up to 50 times a day, and while most common in early pregnancy, symptoms can continue throughout the nine months.

Soccer: Italy turn to Israel after Spanish rout

REGGIO EMILIA (AFP) - A bruised Italy will look to turn the page on a morale-sapping World Cup qualifying defeat to Spain when they host Israel in Reggio Emilia on Tuesday. The Azzurri need three points to consolidate second place in Group G behind Spain and stay safely clear of third-placed Albania as they look to make it to the finals in Russia next year.Giampiero Venturas side were outclassed by the 2010 world champions, inspired by Real Madrid midfielder Isco, as they lost 3-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.Tuesdays challenge against Israel at the Mapei Stadium in northern Italy has now become all the more important as the four-time world champions look to regain confidence with a two-legged play-off now looking increasingly likely if they are to reach the World Cup.A bad defeat which will help us grow ... now grit and determination for Tuesday, said midfielder Antonio Candreva.Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne added: To get to the World Cup we need to remain united.Israel -- seven points behind Italy -- are coming off a 1-0 defeat to Macedonia, their fourth of the campaign. But Ventura has defensive worries.Giorgio Chiellini is still out with a calf problem along with Leonardo Bonucci, who picked up a booking on Saturday, and Leonardo Spinazzola, injured in the last few minutes in Spain.New Chelsea recruit Davide Zappacosta was hastily called up to training in Florence on Sunday as Ventura looks to pull together a makeshift defence.Juventus duo Andrea Barzagli and Daniele Rugani could start together in central defence with Andrea Conti on the right and Manchester Uniteds Matteo Darmian moved to the opposite side.Meanwhile, AC Milans teenage goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma could take the place of veteran captain Gigi Buffon, 39, between the posts. It was a defeat against a side with great quality. We did some good things, others bad, it mustnt wipe out the good work done up until now, Darmian said after the defeat. We go home with quite a heavy defeat, but we look forward. The defeat was Italys first loss in either World Cup or European Championship qualifying since September 2006, a run of 56 matches.Italy now need Spain to lose one of their remaining qualifying games against Liechtenstein, Albania and Israel to have any hope of avoiding a two-legged play-off.Tuesdays qualifier against Israel will be followed by games against Macedonia in Turin and Albania away in October. The last time Italy had to go through play-offs was in 1997 on the road to the 1998 World Cup in France.Italy were handed a boost ahead of the Israel match, however, with news that their captain Eran Zahavi had suddenly decided to end his international career after being angered by booing from the home crowd.Zahavi was left fuming on Saturday by fans in Haifa who started booing when Macedonia scored the only goal of a shock victory in a World Cup qualifier. In response, Zahavi threw his captains armband to the ground, prompting Israels federation to suspend him for an undetermined period.I cant stand it anymore, Zahavi, who plays professionally for Chinas Guangzhou R&F, told Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth after his decision on international retirement. We are in a country that doesnt know how to honour its great athletes, so I prefer to leave. Its unbelievable that the fans boo their team. That doesnt happen anywhere else in the world.I didnt want to react like I did, but I imploded.

Suu Kyi and Myanmar face chorus of anger over Rohingya crisis

Posted:

YANGON (AFP) - Nobel peace laureate Malala Yousafzai and Muslim countries in Asia led a growing chorus of criticism on Monday aimed at Myanmar and its civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi over the plight of its Rohingya Muslim minority.Nearly 90,000 Rohingya have flooded into Bangladesh in the past 10 days following an uptick in fighting between militants and Myanmars military in strife-torn western Rakhine state. The impoverished region bordering Bangladesh has been a crucible of communal tensions between Muslims and Buddhists for years, with the Rohingya forced to live under apartheid-like restrictions on movement and citizenship. The recent violence, which kicked off last October when a small Rohingya militant group ambushed border posts, is the worst Rakhine has witnessed in years with the UN saying Myanmars army may have committed ethnic cleansing in its response.De facto leader Suu Kyi, a former political prisoner of Myanmars junta, has come under increasing fire over her perceived unwillingness to speak out against the treatment of the Rohingya or chastise the military. She has made no public comment since the latest fighting broke out.Every time I see the news, my heart breaks at the suffering of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, Pakistani activist Yousafzai, who famously survived being shot in the head by the Taliban, said in a statement on Twitter.Over the last several years I have repeatedly condemned this tragic and shameful treatment. I am still waiting for my fellow Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to do the same, she added.Muslim neighbours riledThe growing crisis threatens Myanmars diplomatic relations, particularly with Muslim-majority countries in Southeast Asia where there is profound public anger over the treatment of the Rohingya. The Maldives announced on Monday that it was severing all trade ties with the country until the government of Myanmar takes measures to prevent the atrocities being committed against Rohingya Muslims, the foreign ministry said in a statement. It did not say say how much trade took place between the two countries but it could prompt other Muslim nations to follow suit.Indonesias foreign minister Retno Marsudi met Suu Kyi as well as Myanmars army chief General Min Aung Hlaing in Naypyidaw on Monday in a bid to pressure the government to do more to alleviate the crisis.Once again, violence, this humanitarian crisis has to stop immediately, Indonesian president Joko Widodo told reporters on Sunday as he announced Retnos mission.Hours before Widodo spoke, a petrol bomb was thrown at Myanmars embassy in Jakarta while police there have previously dismantled two attempts by Islamist militants to bomb the compound.Dozens demonstrated in front of the embassy on Monday, where armed police were deployed and the mission cordoned off behind barbed wire.Pakistans foreign ministry said it was deeply concerned over reports of growing number of deaths and forced displacement of Rohingya Muslims and urged Myanmar to investigate reports of atrocities against the community.Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif added in a recent tweet: Global silence on continuing violence against Rohingya Muslims. Intl action crucial to prevent further ethnic cleansing - UN must rally.Muslim-majority Malaysia has also seen public protests since the latest round of violence began. We urge for calm and restraint, Prime Minister Najib Razak tweeted. The dire situation facing our Rohingya brothers and sisters must be alleviated for good of Myanmar and region.Analysts have long warned that Myanmars treatment of the Rohingya would lead to homegrown militancy as well as support from international jihadists.Since the latest fighting broke out, Al-Qaedas offshoot in Yemen has called for retaliatory attacks against Myanmar while the Afghan Taliban called on Muslims to use their abilities to help Myanmars oppressed Muslims.Defenders of Suu Kyi say she is limited in her ability to control Myanmars notoriously abusive military, which under Myanmars junta-era constitution is effectively independent of any civilian oversight. The Rohingya are also widely dismissed in Myanmar as Bangladeshi interlopers despite many tracing their lineage back generations, making supporting them hugely unpopular. But detractors say Suu Kyi is one of the few people with the mass appeal and moral authority to swim against the tide on the issue.
