UN chief cheers latest Gaza truce, urges long-term deal

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Sunday welcomed the news of a fresh 72-hour ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, urging the two sides to work towards a longer-term truce. The latest ceasefire began at 12:01 am on Monday (2101 GMT Sunday), after days of frantic mediation to stem a firestorm of violence that has killed 1,939 Palestinians and 67 people on the Israeli side since July 8.Ban expresses his strong hope that this will give the two sides, under Egyptian auspices, another chance to agree on a durable ceasefire for the benefit of all civilian populations and as a starting point to address the underlying grievances on both sides, a statement from his spokesman said. The UN chief continues to urge all concerned to work constructively to this end and avoid any steps which would lead to a return to violence. The United Nations stands ready to assist in the implementation of an agreement that would consolidate peace and allow for much needed reconstruction and development of Gaza, the statement added.Egypt, which has acted as a mediator in the conflict, has urged Israel and the Palestinians to use the new truce to reach a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire, after an earlier three-day truce ended Friday. In the gap between ceasefires, warplanes hit more than 170 targets, killing at least 19 people, while the Palestinians fired at least 136 rockets at Israel, of which 93 hit and 13 were shot down, with the rest falling short inside Gaza, the army said.

Fresh 72-hour truce begins in Gaza

GAZA CITY (AFP) - A fresh 72-hour ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect in Gaza on Monday, paving the way for talks in Egypt aimed at a durable end to a month-long conflict that has wreaked devastating bloodshed. The agreement, which began at 00:01 am (2101 GMT on Sunday), clinched days of frantic mediation to stem a firestorm of violence that has killed 1,939 Palestinians and 67 on the Israeli side since July 8.Minutes before the truce began, Hamas's armed wing claimed it fired several rockets at Israel, including one at Tel Aviv. There were no immediate reports of any damage.Egypt urged Israel and the Palestinians to use the new truce to reach a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire, after an earlier three-day truce collapsed on Friday.Israel has accepted the Egyptian proposal for a ceasefire, an Israeli official told AFP shortly after a Palestinian source confirmed accepting the initiative. The ceasefire must lead to the lifting by Israel of its blockade of the Gaza Strip, Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal told AFP in an exclusive interview in Doha on Sunday. We insist on this goal, he said. In the case of Israeli procrastination or continued aggression, Hamas is ready with other Palestinian factions to resist on the ground and politically, he added.Hamas refused to extend that 72-hour lull when it expired last Friday and Israel accused the Islamist faction of breaching the agreement in its final hours with rocket attacks.Veteran Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat arrived in Cairo Sunday night for talks with Egyptian and Arab League officials on behalf of Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, an airport official said. Israel said its team would only return to Cairo once the truce went into force. If there is a full ceasefire on the ground the Israeli delegation will arrive in Egypt tomorrow, an Israeli government official said Sunday night.Palestinian delegates in Cairo told reporters that they were happy for the Palestinian Authority, headed by president Mahmud Abbas, to take over the reconstruction of Gaza and execute any agreement reached. Israel refuses to deal with Hamas, branding it a terrorist organisation. The national unity government and the Palestinian Authority will take over the execution of all that will be agreed upon during the truce talks, Azzam al-Ahmed, head of Palestinian delegation, told reporters. We are backing the setting up of a national body to be formed by president Abbas, which will take over the reconstruction (of Gaza), said senior Hamas official Ezzat al-Rishq.The president of the body should be professional, credible and one who will be accepted internationally.Seven Gazans, including a woman and two 17-year-olds, were killed on the eve of the truce in a barrage of Israeli air strikes, and another 10 bodies were pulled from the rubble of previous strikes east of Gaza City, local medics said.In the gap between ceasefires, warplanes hit more than 170 targets, killing at least 19 people, while the Palestinians fired at least 136 rockets at Israel, of which 93 hit and 13 were shot down, with the rest falling short inside Gaza, the army said. The UN says just under three quarters of those killed in Gaza were civilians. Around a third of the civilian victims were children. In Deir al-Balah, angry young men bellowed slogans as they carried the bloodied body of a 17-year-old to its grave. The Israeli army described the youth as a prominent terror operative.God loves martyrs We will march on Jerusalem in our millions, chanted mourners.Israel said it closed its Kerem Shalom crossing used to truck supplies into the southern Gaza Strip after it was struck twice by rocket fire.Israel will not engage in negotiations under fire, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his cabinet on Sunday, warning the operation would not stop until there was a prolonged quiet. In the West Bank, an 11-year-old Palestinian boy was shot dead by Israeli troops as he played outside his home in Al-Fawwar refugee camp near the southern city of Hebron, relatives and medics said. The army said troops had opened fire during a violent riot but it has opened an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting. The resumption of fighting had put Netanyahu under increased pressure from hardliners to send ground troops back in to Gaza to topple Hamas.

Erdogan wins Turkish presidency, vows 'new era'

Posted:

ANKARA (AFP) - Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday won the Turkish presidency in an easy election triumph, promising a new era with him as a powerful head of state despite fears the country is creeping towards one-man rule. With Turkey still deeply polarised after bitter 2013 protests, Erdogan has vowed to shake up the country's political system to make the president its number one figure. He won 52.0 percent of the vote, according to a count of 99 percent of ballots. That was way ahead of his main opposition rival Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, on 38.3 percent, and means there will be no second round. The third contender, Kurdish candidate Selahattin Demirtas, won 9.7 percent of the vote. Erdogan's inauguration is set for August 28.The result marked a personal triumph for Erdogan, 60, who has served as premier since 2003 and could potentially be president for two mandates, until 2024.Thousands of people filled central Istanbul waving Turkish flags and holding Erdogan pictures to celebrate his victory as fireworks lit up the sky above the capital Ankara.Today we are closing an era and taking the first step for a new era, Erdogan said in a victory speech from the balcony of his party headquarters in Ankara, describing the election as a historic day.It is not only Recep Tayyip Erdogan who won today. Today, national will has won once again. Today, democracy has won once again, he declared. He promised a new social reconciliation process where all Turks of whatever origin or belief would be equal citizens of the country.Nevertheless, the margin of victory was narrower than expected by some analysts and the vote of Ihsanoglu held up despite a low-key campaign that was dwarfed by Erdogan's drive for votes. The polls were the first time Turkey -- a member of NATO and longtime hopeful to join the EU -- has directly elected its president, who was previously chosen by parliament, and Erdogan hoped for a massive show of popular support.Erdogan has said he plans to revamp the post to give the presidency greater executive powers, which could see Turkey shift towards a system more like that of France if his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) succeeds in changing the constitution. But Erdogan's opponents accuse him of undermining the secular legacy of Turkey's founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who established a strict separation between religion and politics when he forged the new state from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire. It is not Ihsanoglu who lost the elections, but the longing for clean and honest politics and a quest for democracy, said Haluk Koc, the spokesman for the Republican People's Party which backed Ihsanoglu, denouncing Erdogan's oppressive mindset.Ihsanoglu -- a bookish former head of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) -- conceded defeat and offered his congratulations to Erdogan but insisted his campaign had made an impact. This is a very remarkable result because when we launched our campaign one month ago, everyone said we don't know Ihsanoglu, he doesn't know anything about politics. While many secular Turks detest Erdogan, he can still count on a huge base of support from religiously conservative middle-income voters, particularly in central Turkey and poorer districts of Istanbul, who have prospered under his rule.Regional breakdowns of the results showed a clear geographical polarisation of the country, with Ihsanoglu taking the strongly secular western coast, Demirtas the Kurdish southeast but Erdogan the Black Sea coast, Istanbul and the entire heart of the country.Demirtas, 41, hoped to attract votes not just from Kurds but also secular Turks with a left-wing, pro-gay and pro-women's rights message. His charisma, flashing grin and fondness for white shirts with rolled-up sleeves have earned him the moniker the Kurdish Obama in some quarters. His respectable result may provide a springboard for Turkey's next political battle, legislative elections in 2015 and Demirtas expressed hope his People's Democratic Party (HDP) would gain mass appeal. The elections have created excitement about the possibility that this hope can really be long lasting in Turkey, he said.Erdogan endured the toughest year of his rule in 2013, shaken by deadly mass protests sparked by plans to build a shopping mall on Gezi Park in Istanbul that grew into a general cry of anger by secular Turks who felt ignored by the AKP.Later in the year, stunning corruption allegations emerged against the premier and his inner circle, including his son Bilal, based on bugged conversations that enthralled the country like a soap opera. The future of outgoing president Abdullah Gul, a co-founder of the AKP who appears to have distanced himself from Erdogan, is unclear. Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu is tipped as a possible choice to be premier. But analysts warned that Erdogan may face stiff resistance when he seeks to change the constitution and gain extra powers for the presidency. Winning the presidency has never been the main challenge for Erdogan. The main challenge... is what happens next, said Ziya Meral, a researcher on Turkey at University of Cambridge and Foreign Policy Centre in London.

Clinton blames Islamic militants rise on Obama policies

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton blamed the rise of Islamist militants in Iraq and Syria on failures of US policy under President Barack Obama, in an interview published Sunday.Clinton specifically faulted the US decision to stay on the sidelines of the insurgency against Syrias President Bashar al-Assad as opening the way for the most extreme rebel faction, the Islamic State. The failure to help build up a credible fighting force of the people who were the originators of the protests against Assad -- there were Islamists, there were secularists, there was everything in the middle -- the failure to do that left a big vacuum, which the jihadists have now filled, Clinton told the Atlantic.Clinton, widely considered an undeclared presidential candidate, was an unsuccessful advocate of arming the Syrian rebels when she was secretary of state during Obamas first term. She was interviewed before the US presidents decision Thursday to order limited air strikes to check an IS offensive into Kurdistan, which threatened US nationals and facilities and sent thousands of refugees fleeing into the mountains.Obama, who oversaw the US withdrawal from Iraq in 2011, vowed not to send US troops back into the country and said Iraqis needed to confront the jihadist threat by forming an inclusive unity government.Clinton, however, suggested in the interview that Obama lacked a strategy for dealing with the jihadist threat.Great nations need organizing principles, and Dont do stupid stuff is not an organizing principle, she said referring to an Obama slogan. She said the United States must develop an overarching strategy to confront Islamist extremism, likening it to the long US struggle against Soviet-led communism. One of the reasons why I worry about whats happening in the Middle East right now is because of the breakout capacity of jihadist groups that can affect Europe, can affect the United States, she said. Jihadist groups are governing territory. They will never stay there, though. They are driven to expand. Their raison detre is to be against the West, against the Crusaders, against the fill-in-the-blank-and we all fit into one of these categories. How do we try to contain that? Im thinking a lot about containment, deterrence, and defeat, she said. Her arguments, seen as an attempt to distance herself from Obama, echoed those of Republican critics who accuse Obama of allowing a power vacuum to develop by failing to bring US leadership to bear in conflicts from Syria to Iraq to Ukraine.

Tennis: Tsonga stuns Federer to win Toronto Masters

Posted:

TORONTO (AFP) - Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won the Toronto Masters on Sunday with a 7-5, 7-6 (7/3) victory over Roger Federer, two years after a freak collision with a fire hydrant derailed his Canadian campaign.French 13th seed Tsonga hit 11 aces and 26 winners while Federer, two days after his 33rd birthday, was undone by 37 unforced errors. If you believe in something it can happen, said Tsonga. I'm proud of what I've achieved this week. The 29-year-old Tsonga dropped just one set all week as he knocked out world number one Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray on his way to the final. It was Tsonga's second career Masters 1000 title, coming almost six years after his first at Paris Bercy in 2008.He is just the second French player after Guy Forget to win two titles at the Masters level.Tsonga spent just over one and three-quarter hours in constructing his upset over the man who had beaten him in both of their previous finals played in 2011.No French player had ever won a Canadian title before Tsonga's success.Tsonga dealt with injuries for much of 2013 but is now fit and brimming with confidence. In 2012, Tsonga injured his right knee after walking into a fire hydrant as he was out for a stroll on the streets of Toronto. The injury required stitches and forced him to pull out of the Cincinnati Masters event the following week. This will stay in my heart forever, he said. Two years ago here I had knee problems, now it's all changed. This win was something really special. I have a lot of respect for Roger. It was such a week for me, I played so well and I'm so happy. It's just incredible to be back on form like this.I knew I could play well again, this should help me for the rest of the season.Federer, the second seed, had been bidding for his 80th career title and 300th win at a Masters. The Swiss star was playing his sixth final of the season and has won titles in Dubai and Halle. He has also lost in the final at Wimbledon.I had a great time, even if the match didn't go as I was hoping, said Federer, now 44-9 this season as he heads to Cincinnati next week. I had some epic night sessions this week, and I really enjoyed them. Jo deserved this title, he beat some amazing players on the way and backed it up with another title.Tsonga won his 11th career title and claimed his first since Marseille his last 18 months ago. Both men stayed level in the opening set, which went by without a break point until the 12th game when Federer returned wide. That error yielded a set point for Tsgona, who took immediate advantage by forcing another Federer miscue to claim the set after 43 minutes. In the second set, Federer saved a match point in a 10th game which lasted for eight and a half minutes. But the French player prevailed in the ensuing tiebreaker, earning victory on the first of three match points from a Federer backhand error.

Tennis: Radwanska beats Venus for Montreal title

MONTREAL (AFP) - Third seed Agnieszka Radwanska toppled former world number one Venus Williams in straight sets Sunday at the WTA Montreal tournament to clinch her first title of the season.Poland's Radwanska rolled to a comfortable 6-4, 6-2 victory over the American in just 81 minutes as she claimed her 14th career singles title.I am very, very happy, said Radwanska, who earned $467,000 for the win. Everything was working for me today. The 25-year-old's last win was in Seoul in September. She reached the final at Indian Wells earlier this year, losing to Italian Flavia Pennetta.Radwanska fired three aces, had two double faults and won 65 percent of her first serves in the hardcourt match on centre court. The 2012 Wimbledon runner-up dropped the opening game of the first set, but then ran off four straight games to take control. Williams broke back and drew within 4-3 only to see Radwanska win the set 6-4.The former world number two then broke Williams to open the second set, but the Florida resident got back into it with a fourth-game break to even the set at 2-2. Radwanska broke back in the fifth game to regain control.I was just trying to use my chances, Radwanska said. Whenever I could really go for it, that's what I tried to do.On a couple of her serves I really had no chance. But if I had any chance, I took it and that's why I could break her.Radwanska has now won 11 of her 14 crowns on hardcourt.I had an amazing week, she said. I was playing much better with each match. I didn't start that well from my first match but every match was much better. That is why I am sitting right here.Williams, who beat her sister Serena in the semi-finals, had six double faults and won just 26 percent of her second serves in the loss. The 34-year-old American had played three straight three-set matches.I fell a little short. I didn't have as much to give as I would have liked, Williams said.It has been a really long week. I would love to play six matches again next week but it is a lot.I ran out of energy because I was winning too many matches. I haven't had that problem in a long time.Radwanska improved to 4-5 career against Williams, who was seeking her second title of 2014.Williams collected $227,000 in prize money to go over $30 million in career earnings. She will also improve her ranking from the current world number 26.

Motorcycling: Marquez wins Indianapolis Grand Prix

Posted:

INDIANAPOLIS (AFP) - World champion Marc Marquez became the first man in 17 years to win 10 successive races as the Spaniard claimed victory at the Indianapolis Grand Prix on Sunday.Honda rider Marquez, 21, finished ahead of Yamaha pair, Jorge Lorenzo of Spain and Italian Valentino Rossi. The last man to win 10 races in a row was Australian Mick Doohan in 1997.Marquez also won this race in 2013 when he was making his maiden appearance in the elite class having also triumphed at the Brickyard in Moto2 in 2011 and 2012.Seven-time MotoGP world champion Rossi grabbed an early lead from the Spanish pole-sitter and stayed ahead of fellow Italian, Andrea Dovizioso and Marquez.Marquez moved into second place with 21 laps to go, with Lorenzo third before the champion snatched the lead with 16 laps remaining.Marquez crossed the line in 42min 07.041sec, followed by Lorenzo, who slipped past Rossi with 12 laps left. The start I got today was not so good, said Marquez. But then the track temperature was higher and that changed the feeling a little bit, especially with the front tire. At the beginning I had some (difficult) moments, and then I said, 'Okay, we will be quiet the first ten laps behind Valentino.'And then when Jorge also attacked and tried to push in the front, I said 'Okay, now is the time I overtake them and I start to push.' Tenths by tenths I opened the gap, and those two seconds were enough in the end of the race for take the victory.Lorenzo was third last year and the winner in 2009.My pace was similar to (Marquez), but not enough to challenge him for the victory, Lorenzo said.World champion Marquez now has a perfect 250 points with Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa, who was fourth Sunday, in second spot on 161.Rossi has 157 points while 2010 and 2012 champion Lorenzo is on 117 points ahead of the 11th round at Brno in the Czech Republic next weekend where Marquez will attempt to become the first rider to win 11 races in a row in the same season.Rossi, who was not pleased with the Indy track, reached the podium with a third-place finish with a time of 42:13.599.I am satisfied, because first of all, it is a good third place, Rossi said. I led the race, I battled with Marc and Jorge. That is always a great pleasure. Also this track is for me the worst or one of the worst. So to come back on the podium here after a season without a lot of good results is good.Pole-sitter Mika Kallio scored a runaway win in a restarted Moto2 race with Maverick Vinales and Dominique Aegerter joining the Finn on the podium.Kallio triumphed in a shortened 16-lap contest, with the race cut short by a red flag due to a crash involving Azlan Shah, Anthony West, Mattia Pasini and Randy Krummenacher.Efren Vazquez of Spain zoomed past Italy's Romano Fenati in the home stretch to claim his maiden Moto3 win.Vazquez, riding for Honda, finished in 39min 12.977sec, just ahead of Fenati, who clocked 39min 13.042sec. Third in 39min 13.196sec was Australian Jack Miller, the pole sitter and Fenati's KTM teammate.

South Africa battle defensive Zimbabwe on slow-go day

Posted:

HARARE (AFP) - South Africa overcame a sluggish spell to attain a position of strength on day two of their one-off Test against Zimbabwe on Sunday as they reached stumps on 201 for four.Faf du Plessis' unbeaten 69 left the Proteas just 55 runs behind Zimbabwe's first innings total of 256 all out, but not before South Africa had been drawn into a scrap by some canny Zimbabwean tactics. On a slow Harare Sports Club pitch, captain Brendan Taylor set a defensive field and instructed Zimbabwe's medium-pacers to bowl wide outside off stump, putting the onus on number one ranked South Africa to show clear intent. The Proteas mostly responded with a dead bat as Zimbabwe kept their discipline, but also lost the key wickets of Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers when they tried to force the pace. The thing is they're very good bowlers in their conditions and for the wicket that's been prepared, Dean Elgar said. They're very patient, they stick to their game plan very well and they seem to try and get you to play outside of your game plan.Elgar had given South Africa's innings a solid start as he put on 57 for the first wicket with Alviro Petersen, who was caught behind off John Nyumbu for 32, and went on to score 61 before being caught behind. His dismissal initiated the defensive tactics from Taylor, which appeared to hypnotise the South Africans as they slid to 157 for four.Amla scored four from 27 deliveries before driving a Tendai Chatara delivery straight to cover, and De Villiers scored seven from 34 before whipping Nyumbu to midwicket.Meanwhile Du Plessis took 31 balls after the tea break to score the two runs he required for his half-century, and added just 21 runs from 81 balls in the final session.I think that's pretty much the nature of this Test. It's going to be quite slow and it's going to be tough for run-scoring opportunities, said Elgar. It required the naturally attacking mindset of Quinton de Kock to break the spell, with the left-hander scoring relatively freely on his way to 27 not out.The day had begun with Dale Steyn completing his 24th five-wicket haul in Tests when he claimed the final wicket of the Zimbabwean innings.Steyn had Nyumbu caught behind in the fourth over of the day as Zimbabwe added just eight runs to their overnight total of 248 for nine, and finished with figures of 5 for 46.The fast bowler now boasts a five-wicket haul against every Test-playing nation.

Cook's resolve impresses England coach

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - England coach Peter Moores insisted Sunday he was always confident captain Alastair Cook had it in him to lead the team out of their lengthy slump. When India beat England by 95 runs to win the second Test at Lords and go 1-0 up in the five-match series, Cook had presided over a run of 10 Tests without a win, including seven defeats.Several former England skippers called on him to resign the captaincy and some even went so far as to suggest the opener take a break from the game after a run of low scores. But two fifties, including a first-innings 95 where he was dropped on 15, saw Cook return to form in the third Test at Southampton which England won by 266 runs. With their confidence restored, England thrashed India by an innings and 54 runs inside three days to win the fourth Test at Old Trafford on Saturday and now they lead 2-1 ahead of next weeks finale at The Oval.Moores, in his second spell as England coach after being summoned from Old Trafford-based Lancashire following the teams 5-0 Ashes thrashing in Australia, had made it clear from the moment of his return that he wanted to support Cook. And the 29-year-olds mental resilience has impressed Moores.I think the significant point was when he came out and said he was in it for the long haul, Moores explained. If people didnt want him, that was fine, he would move on -- but he made pretty public his desire to captain England. He is very determined. The more people have had a go at him, the more he has said he is totally in for it.He is developing quickly as a captain tactically and has great values to lead with from example. He would openly admit that at times he has had a really tough ride but often that can forge somebody into something special. On a good cricket wicket, England skittled out India for 152 after reducing the tourists to eight for four on the first day.Even with half a day lost to rain on Friday, with a huge downpour in Manchester on Sunday leaving India thinking about what might have been had their batsmen showed more determination, England swept away the tourists.India lost nine second-innings wickets after tea on Saturday, a collapse made all the more astonishing by the fact England paceman Stuart Broad -- man-of-the-match for his first innings six for 25 -- was off the field after suffering a broken nose while batting. But in a sign of the teams changed fortunes off-spinner Moeen Ali, whom Cook seemed reluctant to use as a bowler when the all-rounder made his Test debut against Sri Lanka earlier this season, took four for 39 on Saturday. We played some good cricket at times but didnt put it together for any length of time, said Moores when asked what had changed in recent weeks. We have now played pretty consistently all the way through the last Test and pretty much all the way through this one.We had seen a lot of the younger players do well and the senior players hadnt really fired, but the fact that the senior players have really performed well over the last couple of games has really added something to us.At the end of the Lords game, that was a real low point. We were all very disappointed -- but that allows you to regroup. However, Moores added: We have won two Tests but we have got to be pretty careful we dont get carried away.
