Tennis: Sharapova rallies to reach US Open third round

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - French Open champion Maria Sharapova produced a gritty, three-set victory over Alexandra Dulgheru on Wednesday to reach the second round of the US Open. The fifth-seeded Russian, one of the day's headliners along with Australian Open winner Stan Wawrinka and five-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, kept the star-quotient up on a day that saw two-time defending women's champion Serena Williams along with top men Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray all having a day off.Venus Williams was to open the night session, taking on Timea Bacsinszky for a place in the third round.Wawrinka, the third seed from Switzerland, faced Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci in one of two men's second-round matches on the slate.Sharapova, whose Roland Garros triumph was her fifth Grand Slam success, got off to a rocky start against Romania's 95th-ranked Dulgheru, a former top 30 player who is trying to rebuild her career after missing a year of play after right knee surgery.Sharapova was reluctant to blame the windy conditions in the cavernous Arthur Ashe Stadium court, but the blustery weather could have been a contributing factor to her 46 unforced errors. However, after two hours and 26 minutes on court -- in a match that began in hot sunshine and ended with the floodlights coming on -- she had her 17th three-set win of the season, the most on the WTA tour. There was a little bit of everything today, Sharapova, the 2006 US Open winner, said. As tricky as it is, you have to find a way to win. That's something Agnieska Radwanska, once again at Flushing Meadows, couldn't do.China's Peng Shuai toppled the fourth seed 6-3, 6-4, avenging a loss to the Pole at the 2011 Australian Open where the Chinese player had held two match points.Poland's Radwanska, a former Wimbledon finalist who counts this year's Australian Open among two other Grand Slam semi-final spots, was left to ponder why she has never made it past the last 16 in nine US Open appearances.I really want to know the answer, then maybe I will find a way to play better here and just try another way to be in the second week, said Radwanska who had also lost to Peng in New York in 2010.World number two Simona Halep, seeded second behind two-time defending champion Serena Williams, needed less than an hour to book her third-round berth, with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Slovakian Jana Cepelova.Halep was broken early to trail 0-2, but won 12 of the next 13 games to secure the win.Sweden's Johanna Larsson and Swiss teen Belinda Bencic sprung minor upsets. Larsson rallied to beat 21st-seeded American Sloane Stephens 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 while 17-year-old Bencic, ranked 58th in the world, joined the youth movement spearheaded by 15-year-old CiCi Bellis by ousting Japanese 31 seed Kurumi Nara 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.Sixth-seeded German Angelique Kerber advanced on cue, downing Russian Alla Kudryavtseva 6-2, 6-4 in a match that saw seven breaks of serve, and French 22nd seed Alize Cornet defeated Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova 6-3, 6-3.Sixth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych brought Lleyton Hewitt's 62nd Grand Slam appearance to a quick end, downing the former world number one, and 2001 champion, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the second round. The 33-year-old Hewitt, who has had five surgeries in five years to keep his career going, had early breaks in both the second and third sets, but couldn't deny Berdych a 100th career Grand Slam match win.Seventh-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov finally ended his US Open jinx. After coming up empty in three straight appearances, he defeated US wildcard Ryan Harrison 6-2, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2.South African Kevin Anderson rallied from a break down in the final set to defeat Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas 6-3, 6-7 (3/7), 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7/1) in just over four hours. But three men's matches were cut short by injury retirements.Wimbledon quarter-finalist Marin Cilic of Croatia advanced when a right ankle injury forced Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis to retire while trailing 6-3, 3-1.Spanish 19th seed Feliciano Lopez advanced when Croatian Ivan Dodig retired because of cramping with their match knotted a 1-1 in the fifth set.American Steve Johnson also retired with cramping, dramatically unable to continue to hand Japan's Tatsuma Ito a win.Dodig also retired at both the Australian and French Opens, and was a no-show at Wimbledon due to injury.

Football: Sanchez strike sends 10-man Arsenal through

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Alexis Sanchez's first Arsenal goal earned his side a nervy 1-0 victory over Besiktas on Wednesday that saw them squeeze into the Champions League for the 17th consecutive season. The Chilean, Arsenal's number 17, repaid the first instalment of his 30 million pounds ($50.4 million, 37.6 million euros) transfer fee by tucking away a low shot in first-half stoppage time, but the hosts' inability to kill the game off made for a night of nail-biting tension at the Emirates Stadium.Mathieu Debuchy's dismissal for two yellow cards meant that Arsenal saw out the last 15 minutes with 10 men, but although a solitary goal would have sent the Turkish side through after last week's goalless draw in Istanbul, the hosts held on for a 1-0 aggregate win.We produced the performance we wanted -- on the tactical side, on the technical side, and on the mental side, said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who revealed that striker Olivier Giroud will be out for up to four months after undergoing surgery on a broken tibia. We were at the level that was requested tonight against a good team, but we couldn't finish the game off and that made it nervous in the last 10 minutes when we were down to 10 men.Wenger's side, who lost to Bayern Munich in the last 16 last season, will discover the identities of their group-phase opponents in Thursday's draw.Of course we are gutted, because we played good in both games and are close to qualifying for the Champions League against great opponents, Besiktas coach Slaven Bilic told Sky Sports. Those couple of chances we had to score, but we didn't. Congratulations to Arsenal. They had the experience and quality up front when needed.Arsenal were missing Aaron Ramsey through suspension, while Giroud's absence saw Sanchez handed another opportunity to prove he can lead the line on his own.Though Arsenal initially took control, their chances owed more to serendipity than intricate build-up play.Jack Wilshere slid a shot wide after Sanchez had been bundled over, while Santi Cazorla should have done better than slam the ball wide from 40 yards when visiting goalkeeper Tolga Zengin fluffed a kick.Besiktas, meanwhile, had two penalty appeals waved away, first when Mustafa Pektemek tumbled under a challenge from Debuchy and then when Wilshere needlessly slid in from behind on Ramon Motta.Reprieved, Wilshere then set Sanchez free, only for Zengin to save at the former Barcelona forward's feet, but in first-half injury time the same two players combined to put Arsenal ahead. When Debuchy's cross was headed clear, Wilshere toed the ball to Mesut Ozil and although the England midfielder could not take the German's return pass into his stride, the ball broke kindly for Sanchez to roll a low shot past Zengin.Eager to make their place in the group-phase safe, Arsenal started the second period strongly and forced the visitors onto the back foot.Cazorla drilled the ball across goal from an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain pass, Sanchez poked wide after being neatly teed up by Wilshere, and Debuchy headed wide at the back post from an in-swinging Cazorla free-kick.The visitors remained a threat, however, and after Debuchy had alertly thwarted Demba Ba, the former Chelsea striker lashed a shot into the side-netting.Oxlade-Chamberlain should have doubled Arsenal's lead when he shot straight at Zengin from Nacho Monreal's low cross and the hosts' task was further complicated when Debuchy saw red after tugging back Pektemek. In a moment of farce, Wenger introduced defender Calum Chambers in place of Ozil, only for the former Southampton youngster to be booked by Portuguese official Pedro Proenca for entering the field of play too quickly. As Bilic watched animatedly from the stands following his dismissal in the first leg, Besiktas pushed hard in the closing stages, but with Ba failing to apply a touch to a late cross, they slipped into the Europa League.

Badminton: Lee joins main rivals in last 16 at worlds

Posted:

COPENHAGEN (AFP) - World number one Lee Chong Wei marched on in his bid for an elusive world championship title as he strolled into the last 16 to follow suit with his leading rivals in Copenhagen on Wednesday. The Malaysian top seed, runner-up at the last two world finals, made light work of Germany's Dieter Domke with Lee cruising to a 21-12, 21-9 victory. He is a lower-ranked opponent but he put up a fight although I felt confident all the way through, said Lee after dispatching his 43rd-ranked opponent. However the Malaysian, also a two-time Olympic silver medallist, admitted he was still working his way back to top form having been sidelined since June with a persistent groin injury.I was out of action for two months so I'm still trying to get some feelings back out on court. There are some shots I'm still reluctant to play, he said.Lee faces unheralded 49th-ranked Irishman Scott Evans for a place in the quarter-finals but the world's top player stressed he wouldn't be caught looking further ahead in the draw.Evans is another lower-ranked player but I'm not going to underestimate him. I'll be taking him seriously, said Lee.Earlier second seed Chen Long of China steamrolled his way into round three with a clinical display to see off Germany's 2012 European champion Marc Zwiebler 21-11, 21-10.With fourth seed Kenichi Tago a pre-tournament withdrawal due to injury Chen's path to the final appears a favourable one with Indonesian fifth seed Tommy Sugiarto -- a 21-16, 21-13 winner over Russia's Vladimir Malkov on Wednesday -- his likely opponent in the last four.Home favourite Jan O Jorgensen is on a collision course with Lee after the Dane breezed past his second-round opponent Eetu Heino of Finland 21-9, 21-17 in just under 30 minutes. It was a great game. I'm happy with the outcome and the way I played, said Jorgensen, who is seeded three.Jorgensen cited a pre-existing foot problem for a slight second-game stumble but allayed any fears it might derail his bid to become the first European to lift the world title since compatriot Peter Rasmussen in 1997.I struggled a bit with my foot during a training camp before the world championships. I slipped during the second set...and lost my concentration a little bit. Everything's fine though, said Jorgensen, who will face Chou Tien-chen, after the Taiwanese player took care of Japanese 15th seed Sho Sosaki 21-16, 21-19.Former world junior champion Wang Zhengming of China was given a scare as Petr Koukal took him to a third game before the sixth seed outlasted the Czech 21-15, 19-21, 21-7.Hong Kong's ninth seed Hu Yun was pushed all the way by Finn Ville Lang before prevailing 17-21, 21-15, 21-17 while South Korean Son Wan-ho progressed seamlessly into round three with a ruthless 21-6, 21-12 demolition of American Sattawat Pongnairat.Women's second seed Wang Shixian shook off stubborn resistance by Hong Kong's Yip Pui Yin to make the last 16 courtesy of a 21-15, 21-18 victory. She was joined in the third round by compatriot and third seed Wang Yihan as the 2011 champion eliminated Denmark's Anna Thea Madsen 21-13, 21-13. Top-ranked European Carolina Marin, the world number 10 from Spain, edged past Malaysia's Tee Jing Yi 21-18, 16-21, 21-10 while South Korea's Bae Yeon-ju, Taiwan's Tai Tzu-ying and 2013 bronze medallist P.V. Sindhu of India also moved on in routine fashion. However, tenth seed Porntip Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand was knocked out by Canada's Commonwealth champion Michelle Li.

Euro edges up vs dollar on ECB speculation

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro crept higher against the dollar Wednesday after Germany's finance minister downplayed prospects that the European Central Bank will unveil new measures to stave off deflation next week. The euro had fallen in the previous three trading sessions against the greenback, hitting nearly a one-year low, in part due to hints the ECB could unveil new easing steps at the September 4 monetary policy meeting.Markets have misinterpreted recent remarks by ECB chief Mario Draghi as hinting at new measures to stave off deflation, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on Wednesday. I know Mario Draghi very well, Schaeuble told the regional daily Passauer Neue Presse.I think he's being over-interpreted.At a central bank symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, last week, Draghi had said that the ECB was becoming concerned about falling inflation expectations and will use all available instruments needed to ensure price stability over the medium term.Financial markets interpreted the comments as a hint at a possible quantitative easing program, large-scale asset purchases that have been used by the other central banks such as the US Federal Reserve to inject funds into the economy. According to media reports Wednesday, the ECB has hired BlackRock, the giant US asset manager, to advise it on a program for purchasing asset-backed securities. The cost of borrowing for eurozone countries fell to record low levels on prospects of a massive ECB cash injection. The yield on traded German 10-year bonds, the benchmark for the eurozone, fell to a record low 0.915 percent from 0.939 percent late on Tuesday.Record lows were also set for French, Italian and Spanish debt.

Bangladesh bat first in Windies T20

BASSETERRE (AFP) - Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and chose to bat first against the West Indies in the one-off Twenty20 international at Warner Park in St Kitts on Wednesday. After being swept 3-0 in the one-day international series, the visitors brought in a number of T20 specialists for the fixture, including batsmen Shamsur Rahman and Mithun Ali along with fast-medium bowlers Rubel Hossain and Taskin Ahmed.Despite being troubled by a nagging side strain, spinner Sunil Narine was named in the West Indies team, which has Darren Sammy at the helm, with the home side omitting batsman Andre Fletcher and spinner Sulieman Benn from their final eleven. This is the first meeting between the two teams in this format of the game since the West Indies romped to a 75-run victory over the hosts at the World T20 in Bangladesh last March.West Indies - Chris Gayle, Dwayne Smith, Lendl Simmons, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Darren Sammy (captain), Andre Russell, Denesh Ramdin, Sunil Narine, Sheldon Cottrell, Krishmar Santokie.Bangladesh - Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Shamsur Rahman, Mushfiqur Rahim (captain), Mithun Ali, Mahmudullah, Nasir Hossain, Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Al-Amin Hossain.

Raina ton sets up huge India win over England

Posted:

CARDIFF (AFP) - Suresh Rainas dynamic century laid the platform for world champions Indias crushing 133-run win over England in the second one-day international at Cardiff on Wednesday.Victory gave India a 1-0 lead in the five-match series following Mondays washout in Bristol and saw them return to winning ways after their 3-1 defeat by England in the preceding Test series.Man-of-the-match Rainas innings was the cornerstone of Indias imposing 304 for six after England captain Alastair Cook won the toss.England, chasing a rain-adjusted 295 off 47 overs in reply, were well-placed at 54 for none. But they lost all 10 wickets for 107 runs as they collapsed to 161 all out in 38.1 overs.Prior to this match, former England stars Michael Vaughan and Graeme Swann had slammed the teams old-fashioned approach to one-day cricket and this performance appeared to vindicate that criticism. The one consolation for England, who will try to win the World Cup for the first time in four decades of trying in Australia and New Zealand next year, was that opener Alex Hales marked his ODI debut with an innings top-score of 40.Spin, as has so often been the case, proved Englands Achilles heel with left-armer Ravindra Jadeja taking four for 28 in seven overs.India were in trouble at 19 for two before a stand of 91 between Rohit Sharma (52) and Ajinkya Rahane (41) revived the innings.Left-hander Raina, who made exactly 100, and India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (52), then took the game way from England with a fifth-wicket stand of 144.Chris Woakes led Englands attack with four for 52 in his 10 overs, with off-spinner James Tredwell (two for 42) the only other wicket-taking bowler in the innings.One-day cricket is a very different format and gives the players freedom to express themselves and get back into form, Dhoni told Sky Sports.Meanwhile England captain Alastair Cook admitted: We didnt play well at all, he said. All credit to MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina who took the game away from us and we were slow to react.Even when we batted, it wasnt a 160 wicket...We have to dust ourselves down and play better.England didnt help themselves by bowling 16 wides, with paceman Chris Jordan contributing 12 -- the equivalent of two extra overs -- in an expensive return of none for 73.Woakes struck twice in the seventh over, having opener Shikhar Dhawan caught behind before dismissing Virat Kohli for a duck as his miserable tour of England continued when a powerful drive found Cook at mid-off.There was a case for keeping the new ball duo of James Anderson and Woakes going. But Cooks double bowling change, bringing on seam-bowling all-rounders Jordan and Ben Stokes (none for 54 in seven overs) saw India cut loose.Tredwell briefly staunched the flow of runs by having Rahane stumped and dismissing Sharma.Raina, however, launched Woakes for two sixes in four balls, with India scoring 62 runs in their five batting powerplay overs.Raina completed a century off just 74 balls, including 12 fours and three sixes before he holed out off Woakes to Anderson, on the cover boundary.Hales, who scored Englands first Twenty20 hundred, against Sri Lanka in March, helped the hosts a steady start to their chase. But when left-handed opener Cook, going across his stumps, was lbw to Mohammed Shami for 19, it was the start of a collapse from which England never recovered.Three balls later Shami bowled Ian Bell (one) as the batsman left a nip-backer.A similar delivery, this time from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, cleaned up Joe Root.Hales had looked good early on but then got bogged down, scoring just 10 singles off his last 34 balls. He was out when he top-edged a sweep off Jadejas fourth ball to short fine leg.Raina then starred with he ball when he had Jordan plumb lbw for a duck and the match ended when Tredwell holed out off Ashwin.

No more negotiation, 'revolution' starts today after lunch: Tahirul Qadri

Posted:

LAHORE (Dunya News, Web Desk) – Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri concluded the negotiations today after terming it a complete failure, and announced ‘revolution’ will start after lunch at 3 pm while fervently calling upon local and foreign supporters to join ‘youm-e-inqilaab’.Qadri refused further negotiation until the government accepted these two demands:1 – Case registration against nominated accused of Model Town tragedy.2 – Resignations of Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Shahbaz Sharif and provincial ministers.Qadri blamed the government for having a non-serious attitude to resolve the political crisis, and said that representatives from the government do not need to come back if these two demands were not accepted.PAT chief said that Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif’s resignation is a distant reality but the government is not even registering a First Information Report (FIR) against the 21 accused people in the Model Town tragedy. The 21 accused include the CM, PM and police officers. Qadri added that the government is responsible for the 14 people killed and 90 injured in the Model Town tragedy. While grieving over the Model Town tragedy, Qadri said that an Additional Sessions judge had sanctioned the registration of the FIR, and even after the government’s appeal, the Lahore High court upheld the lower court’s decision but still the government refused to implement it.Qadri concluded the session by saying that today’s (Thursday) ‘historic address’ would be the last address, and then ‘Inqilab’ would begin after lunch at 3 pm because the government has negotiated with ‘ill-intentions’. He added that if the government accepts those two demands as a confidence-building measure only then he would extend the ultimatum.

South Africa chases down 327 to beat Australia

Posted:

HARARE (AP) - Former schoolmates AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis both hit centuries in a game-changing 206-run partnership as South Africa chased down 327 to beat top-ranked Australia by seven wickets on Wednesday. The South Africans struck the first blow against the Australians in the triangular one-day series in Zimbabwe as they powered to 328-3 and victory and with 20 balls to spare at Harare Sports Club.Captain De Villiers was 136 not out at the end and still striking boundaries despite struggling with cramp in his left leg from around halfway through his innings. His good friend Du Plessis was out for 106 but the pair came together with South Africa 51-2 and by the time they were parted 29 overs later, the Proteas were well on course for victory at 257-3 and both had hundreds.Their stand was the highest for the third wicket in one-dayers at Harare Sports Club and the highest third-wicket partnership ever for South Africa against its great cricket rival.Du Plessis century was his first in ODIs and was laced with 11 fours and a six. De Villiers gritted through the pain in his left hamstring, which left him hobbling badly between the wickets and throwing himself into headlong dives on numerous occasions when he feared he might be run out because of his hampered running. They reached their centuries in the space of two balls and with almost identical shots.De Villiers was dropped twice in the space of two overs, too, when Mitchell Johnson and skipper George Bailey both put down simple chances when the South African No. 4 was on 78 and 85 respectively. He made them pay.De Villiers went on to make the second-highest score by a South African against Australia in a 50-over game, second only to Herschelle Gibbs 175 in another memorable South African chase, when it made 438 in Johannesburg to beat Australia in 2006.De Villiers struck 11 fours and two sixes, including a scoop for maximum over backward square leg that he played almost from a sitting position. JP Duminy joined De Villiers at the end and was 33 not out, and South Africa cruised home inside 47 overs. And yet, South Africa appeared to have made a mistake by putting Australia in to bat at the start.Aaron Finch made 102, his fellow opener Phil Hughes got 51 and Bailey a rapid 66 as Australia posted an apparently formidable 327-7.

4 Indonesians in rape case retract confessions

Posted:

JAKARTA (AP) - Four janitors charged with raping a kindergartner at a prestigious international school in Indonesia retracted their confessions Wednesday, saying they were tortured by police during questioning. They made the retractions on the second day of the closed-door trials of five custodians at the Jakarta International School, which is facing a storm of controversy following allegations of additional abuse. The school was shaken earlier this year in an unrelated case after news surfaced that William Vahey, an American who taught there from 1992 to 2002, killed himself as the FBI was investigating evidence that he may have sexually abused scores of teenage boys during a 40-year career at 10 international schools across four continents. However, there have been no allegations that he molested any students in Indonesia.Six custodians, five men and a woman, were arrested in April. However, one man committed suicide by drinking bathroom cleanser while in police custody. Their trials began Tuesday at the South Jakarta District Court with the first male defendant.Patra M. Zen, one of their lawyers, said the defendants insisted Wednesday they were innocent and retracted the confessions they had given investigators, saying they could not withstand the alleged torture. The defendants are Virgiawan Amir, Syahrial, Zainal Abidin and Afrischa Setyani. Setyani, the only woman, is accused of being an accomplice. The first hearing on Tuesday was for the fifth defendant, Agun Iskandar. They could face up to 15 years in jail if found guilty of raping the 6-year-old boy, whose parents are seeking $125 million in compensation from the school.Since the case of the janitors surfaced, two other families of young male students have come forward, leading to the arrests in July of Canadian school administrator Neil Bantleman and Indonesia teaching assistant Ferdinant Tjiong.A campaign on social media has called for the release of the staff members, who have denied the allegations. The school is attended by the children of foreign diplomats, businesspeople and Indonesia's elite. It has 2,400 students aged 3 to 18 from about 60 different countries.
