Tennis: Serena beats Wozniacki to reach Cincinnati final

Posted:

CINCINNATI (AFP) - Serena Williams moved within one win of a second pre-US Open hardcourt title Saturday, reaching the Cincinnati final with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Caroline Wozniacki. The world number one American, who claimed her 61st career WTA title at Stanford two weeks ago, will face off on Sunday against either fifth-seeded Maria Sharapova or ninth-seeded Ana Ivanovic. Those two were meeting Saturday night in a battle of former world number ones.Williams, playing a third tournament in a row for the first time since late 2007, improved her 2014 match record to 37-6.The 32-year-old said that she needed a set to find her game after a slow start in a match which featured 15 breaks of serve, seven of them in the final set.I got off to a little bit of a slow start, but I was definitely in it, said Williams, who followed up her win in Stanford by reaching the semi-finals last week at Montreal, where she lost to her sister Venus. I had to get out there and grind out everything. She's a really good returner and she was getting everything back. She just made some good shots.I gave all that I had in me today, she said. I didn't expect to do this well over the summer. I knew I needed matches so I entered three tournaments. But I'm still here.Wozniacki came to the match after beating two top 10 players in a row -- Angelique Kerber and Agnieszka Radwanska -- for first time since the 2010 WTA Finals.Despite the defeat, Wozniacki is ready for one last US Open tune-up next week in New Haven.I've had a lot of matches these couple of weeks, said the 24-year-old Dane. But I'm good with playing New Haven. I'm going to use it as even better preparation, get hopefully a few matches in.There are a few things that I just want to keep working on.As for her performance against Williams, Wozniacki would have liked to have served better.I just didn't serve well today, she said. Didn't get many first serves in. I was fighting, I was running. I was trying to take the ball early. I was returning well. Then my serve comes around and I can't seem to hold serve. It's a frustrating thing when you're out there on the court.Wozniacki, who lost to Williams in three sets in the Montreal quarter-finals, won the opening set in half an hour despite double-faulting away a service game. But Williams stepped up a gear in the second, helped to an early break by another of Wozniacki's double faults. The third was a roller-coaster for both players, who are good friends off the court. After five straight breaks of serve, Williams finally stopped the rot as she held for a 4-2 lead. She secured another break for 5-2 but then had to face a Wozniacki fightback, with the former number one reaching 4-5.Williams finally closed it out in the next game after an hour and three-quarters. She finished with seven aces and benefitted from eight Wozniacki double faults.I knew I had to return better, and today I was able to do that, Williams said. I actually felt better than in my other matches.Russian superstar Sharapova, who leads Ivanovic 8-3 in their career series, was not expecting an easy time on court against the Serb. The tournament is still not done, the French Open champion said. I certainly hope to raise my level and have a much better first set.It can't be any worse, she added in reference to her slow start against Simona Halep in the quarter-finals. I'm just happy to be in that stage.

Tennis: Ferrer brushes aside Benneteau, books Cincinnati final

Posted:

CINCINNATI (AFP) - Spain's David Ferrer brushed aside Julien Benneteau 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday to reach the Cincinnati Masters final.Spain's Ferrer, seeded sixth, schooled Benneteau as the Frenchman played in his first semi-final at the elite Masters 1000 level. He needed just 71 minutes to seal the victory and give himself a shot at adding a second title of 2014 to the trophy he lifted in Buenos Aires. The 32-year-old Spaniard also reached the final at Hamburg this year, but he last played a Masters final in November, when he lost to Novak Djokovic at Paris Bercy.Ferrer will aim for his 22nd career trophy when he faces off on Sunday against either second-seeded Roger Federer or Canadian Milos Raonic, the fifth seed.Ferrer, noted for his foot speed and dogged retrieving, got comfortable with a break in the opening set to take the opener in 39 minutes.I played very consistently, and got the break, then I could play with calm, he said, calling the match maybe my best of the week.I played without a lot of mistakes but it was difficult to return sometimes.Ferrer took a 4-1 lead in the second set and while Benneteau put up a last-gasp fight he was able to wait for the exhausted Frenchman to finally make an error on the fifth match point.I'm going step by step, Ferrer said. Tennis is always a surprise. When I looked in my quarter of the draw and saw Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga there, I knew it was not easy. But as they lost, I took my chance and got into the final. I'm trying to improve my game every day. Watching the top 10 guys is a great inspiration to improve also.I'm feeling very comfortable on hardcourts. On those I can play more with my timing than with power.Federer has a 5-0 record over big-serving Raonic, including a straight-sets semi-final triumph at Wimbledon this year. But the 17-time Grand Slam champion from Switzerland said he couldn't afford to be complacent.I will focus on my own game, very simple and straightforward, he said. Because of his serve, you just never feel you're quite a peace, and especially in the best-of-three match. If I'm playing well and my reaction is there, I feel good about my chances. I'm aware of how good Milos is on this kind of court. In women's action at the combined ATP and WTA event, top-seeded Serena Williams booked a finals berth with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Caroline Wozniacki. She'll face the winner of the battle between former world number ones Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic.

Football: Swansea ruin Van Gaal bow, Ramsey saves Arsenal

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Swansea City condemned Louis van Gaal to defeat in his first Premier League game as Manchester United manager on Saturday, while Aaron Ramsey scored a stoppage-time winner for Arsenal.Van Gaal was taking charge of his first competitive match at United, but his new side exhibited many of the same failings from last season -- when they finished seventh -- as they slumped to a 2-1 loss.It was Swansea's second consecutive win at Old Trafford, after an FA Cup third-round success in January, and dealt United their first home defeat on the season's opening day since 1972.It is very disappointing that we have lost our first home match, said Van Gaal, who handed competitive debuts to 20-year-old Tyler Blackett and 21-year-old Jesse Lingard. We were very nervous in the first half, made the wrong choices, and that is a pity. In the second half, we never played as a team. Therefore, I'm responsible.Gylfi Sigurdsson, back at Swansea after two years at Tottenham Hotspur, gave his side victory by squeezing a shot past United goalkeeper David de Gea in the 72nd minute after Wayne Routledge miscued a volley.Sigurdsson had earlier teed up South Korea midfielder Ki Sung-yueng to stroke home a 28th-minute opener, before new United captain Wayne Rooney hooked in an equaliser for the injury-ravaged hosts. We have been working hard in pre-season on defensive shape and we can get even better at that, Swansea manager Garry Monk told BT Sport. But there were pleasing signs in the way we stuck together and the goals we scored against a side of Manchester United's resources.FA Cup winners Arsenal opened their campaign with victory after Ramsey gave them a last-gasp 2-1 success at home to Crystal Palace, who are without a manager following Tony Pulis's shock departure on Friday.New signing Brede Hangeland gave Palace a 35th-minute lead, shrugging off the attentions of Arsenal star signing Alexis Sanchez to meet Jason Puncheon's in-swinging corner with a glancing header.Laurent Koscielny was caught napping by Hangeland's dart to the near post, but the Arsenal centre-back atoned in first-half injury time by ghosting in to head home a teasing free-kick from Sanchez.Palace had Jason Puncheon sent off for two bookable offences and Arsenal capitalised in the 91st minute when Ramsey notched from close range after Julian Speroni had saved from Mathieu Debuchy.Credit to Palace, they fought hard. They were physically very strong, very organised, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told Sky Sports. We keep going. That's one of our strengths and it paid off today. On Ramsey, Wenger added: He has something that is a real gift, to be where you need to be in the box.The late excitement at the Emirates Stadium was mirrored in three other games.New Zealand striker Chris Wood came off the bench to earn promoted Leicester City a dramatic 2-2 draw at home to Everton in their first top-flight game since 2004.After Leicester new recruit Leonardo Ulloa had cancelled out Aiden McGeady's precise 20th-minute opener, Steven Naismith looked to have given Everton victory, only for Wood to fire home four minutes from time.Eric Dier enjoyed a dream debut for Tottenham by scoring a 93rd-minute winner at West Ham United in manager Mauricio Pochettino's first game at the Spurs helm. After Tottenham full-back Kyle Naughton and West Ham centre-back James Collins had both been sent off, substitute Dier coolly rounded goalkeeper Adrian in stoppage time before rolling home the game's only goal.I am not sure why I was up in attack, to be honest, said Dier, a 20-year-old English centre-back who signed from Sporting Lisbon two weeks ago.I'm told the assistant boss said to the manager, 'What's he doing there?' And even I don't know why I was there. I don't normally get into those positions. At The Hawthorns, meanwhile, new West Bromwich Albion manager Alan Irvine was denied victory against Sunderland by an 85th-minute goal from Sebastian Larsson.West Brom led 2-1 after Saido Berahino replied to Lee Cattermole's early 25-yard strike with a brace, but Larsson earned Sunderland a 2-2 draw by sweeping home a cut-back from debutant Patrick van Aanholt.Elsewhere, James Chester's 52nd-minute header gave Hull City a 1-0 win at promoted Queens Park Rangers, while Andreas Weimann earned Aston Villa a 1-0 victory at Stoke City.Champions Manchester City travel to Newcastle United on Sunday, with Liverpool, the side they pipped to last season's title, hosting Southampton. Chelsea, third last season, visit promoted Burnley on Monday.

Golf: Kevin Sutherland shoots rare 59 on Champions Tour

Posted:

ENDICOTT (AFP) - Kevin Sutherland joined one of golf's most exclusive clubs on Saturday, firing a 59 in the second round of the Champions Tour tournament at En-Joie Golf Club.Sutherland became the first to shoot golf's magic number on the tour for over-50s, with a 13-under par round that incuded 12 birdies, one eagle and one bogey. The bogey came at the final hole of the par-72 layout -- ending his bid for a 58.That would have been a first in an event sanctioned by the US PGA Tour, which runs the Champions Tour.Sutherland, whose only PGA Tour victory was at the 2002 World Golf Championships Match Play Championship, had seven birdies and an eagle in his first eight holes and admitted he was thinking 59 even before he reached the turn. When I was nine under after eight ... I started thinking 59, Sutherland told the Golf Channel. Earlier than I should ... but it worked out all right.Only six players have posted 59s on the US PGA Tour, the most recent Jim Furyk at the BMW Championship in Chicago last September. In 2010, both Paul Goydos and Australian Stuart Appleby achieved the feat.David Duval, Chip Beck and Al Geiberger have also done it.

Root keeps England on top against India

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Joe Root continued his personal run-fest against India as England maintained their grip on the fifth Test at The Oval on Saturday.England, 2-1 up in the five-match series, were 385 for seven at stumps on the second day -- a first-innings lead of 237 runs after India had been skittled out for just 148 on Friday.Root was 92 not out and Chris Jordan unbeaten on 19, with the pair having added an unbroken 67 in just 62 balls for the eighth wicket.Saturday saw Root join two all-time great batsmen in becoming only the third England player to score a half century in every Test of a five-match series after Wally Hammond against South Africa in 1938/39 and Peter May, also against South Africa, in 1955. John Edrich scored fifties in all six-matches of England's Ashes-winning series against Australia in 1970/71.It's great that we have batted all day and given ourselves a good lead, England's Gary Ballance, who made 64, told Sky Sports. There's a bit of seam and if you bowl in good areas you can create chances. Hopefully it will still do that tomorrow (Sunday).India took four wickets in quick succession before tea with off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin claiming two for three runs in eight balls, as England captain Alastair Cook (79), Ballance, Ian Bell (seven) and Moeen Ali (14) were dismissed. We created some chances but we let go of some chances, said Ashwin, who ended the day with two for 55 in 20 overs. We tried to hit good areas and pick up as many wickets as possible in the morning because whatever was in the wicket was going to be there in the morning. At tea England were 246 for five, with Root 11 not out and Jos Buttler unbeaten on 12 on a day where overhead conditions largely favoured the batsmen and much of the early moisture in the pitch had evaporated. The pair had put on 80 before wicketkeeper Buttler, bidding to score fifties in his first three Test innings, fell for 45 when he chipped fast bowler Ishant Sharma straight to Ashwin at short mid-wicket.Root then hooked a short ball from swing specialist Bhuvneshwar Kumar for six before completing a 93-ball fifty. That followed the 23-year-old Yorkshireman's scores of 154 in the drawn first Test at Trent Bridge, 66 in India's 95-run second Test win at Lord's, 56 in the hosts' 266-run victory at Southampton and 77 in their even more emphatic innings and 54-run success at Old Trafford.England resumed Saturday on 62 without loss after India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who made 82, had stood firm during the tourists latest collapse of the series. Cook was 24 not out and Sam Robson 33 not out. However, Robson had added just four runs to his score when, in the second over of the day, the Australia-born opener had his off stump knocked over by fast bowler Varun Aaron after playing down the wrong line. But England's all left-handed second-wicket pair of Cook and Ballance were barely troubled as they took the hosts to 148 for one at lunch.Ballance completed a 77-ball fifty when he deliberately uppercut Kumar over the slips for his 11th four of the innings. That meant the Zimbabwe-born batsman had now scored three hundreds and three fifties in his first eight Tests.Cook, so fluent before lunch, was dropped in the slips on 65 and 70 by Murali Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane respectively. But he was unable to score what would have been his first century in 31 innings since the last of his England record 26 Test hundreds, against New Zealand at Headingley in May last year.Cook's luck ran out when he was drawn into a drive outside off stump by Aaron and edged low to Vijay at first slip.It was the toughest of the three chances the opening batsman had offered, with England now 191 for two after a second-wicket stand of 125.Cook's exit sparked a mini collapse, with Ballance prodding Ashwin tamely to Cheteshwar Pujara at silly point.Sharma, the star of India's 95-run win in the second Test at Lord's but missing at Southampton and Manchester with a leg injury, then produced an excellent full-length delivery that Bell edged to Dhoni. Ashwin struck again when Ali, trying to withdraw the bat, played on.

Kurds battle to retake Iraq's largest dam: general

Posted:

SULAIMANIYAH (AFP) - Kurdish troops backed by US warplanes launched a bid Saturday to recapture Mosul dam, Iraq's largest, from jihadists, a senior Kurdish military official said.Kurdish peshmerga, with US air support, have seized control of the eastern side of the dam complex, Major General Abdelrahman Korini told AFP.We killed several members of Daash. We are still advancing and in the coming hours should announce welcome news, he said, using the old Arabic acronym for the Islamic State jihadist group.Witnesses said the air strikes started early in the morning and reported that fighting was ongoing in the afternoon.Peshmerga forces lost control of the dam on August 7 as IS fighters were sweeping the region, conquering one village after another and seizing other key infrastructure such as oil wells. The dam on the Tigris river, on the southern shores of Mosul lake about 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of the city, provides electricity to much of the region and is crucial to irrigation in vast farming areas in Nineveh province.A 2007 letter to the premier, Nuri al-Maliki, sent by then US ambassador Ryan Crocker and the former commander of US forces in Iraq, David Petraeus, warned of the consequences of a disaster at the dam, which was assessed to have serious structural weaknesses.A catastrophic failure of Mosul dam would result in flooding along the Tigris river all the way to Baghdad, the letter read.Assuming a worst case scenario, an instantaneous failure of Mosul dam filled to its maximum operating level could result in a flood wave 20 metres deep at the city of Mosul, it said. The Islamic State has already resorted to the weaponisation of dams, as was the case earlier this year when it flooded large areas around the city of Fallujah, west of Baghdad. However Mosul is the main stronghold of the Iraqi part of the Islamic State's self-proclaimed caliphate, and the dam would be an important part of its own economy and state-building efforts.
