US urges all sides in Pak to peacefully resolve differences

Posted:

WASHINGTON (Agencies) - The United States has appealed to all sides in Pakistan to refrain from violence and resolve their differences through peaceful discussions in a way that strengthens democracy in the country. We are carefully monitoring the demonstrations in Islamabad. We urge all sides to refrain from violence, exercise restraint, and respect the rule of law, State Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters at her daily news conference. We believe that all parties here should work together to resolve their differences through peaceful dialogue in a way that strengthens Pakistan's democracy, and that's certainly the consistent message we have sent, she said in response to a question.Pakistan's cricketer turned politician and opposition leader Imran Khan and cleric Tahirul Qadri, who are calling on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign, tonight marched with thousands of their supporters towards the Parliament. They entered the heavily fortified 'Red Zone', Islamabad's diplomatic and political enclave, despite the government's efforts to keep them away. Minor clashes were also reported to have taken place between anti-government protesters and security personnel. The agitators led by Khan want Sharif to step down over alleged rigging of last year's parliamentary elections. Qadri also wants Prime Minister Sharif ousted.

Study links antibiotic to heart death risk

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Danish researchers reported a link Wednesday between a commonly-used antibiotic and a significantly higher risk of heart deaths, while observers urged caution in interpreting the results. In a study published online by the British medical journal The BMJ, the team said clarithromycin use was associated with a 76-percent higher risk of cardiac death, compared to use of penicillin V.The absolute risk difference was 37 cardiac deaths per 1 million courses with clarithromycin, reported the trio from the Statens Serum Institute's epidemiology department in Copenhagen. The risk stopped when treatment ended. Clarithromycin is prescribed to millions of people every year, to treat bacterial infections like pneumonia, bronchitis and some skin infections. The team had analysed data from more than five million antibiotics courses given to Danish adults aged 40 to 74 in the period 1997 to 2011.Of the patients, just over 160,000 had received clarithromycin, 590,000 roxithromycin, and 4.4 million penicillin V.Clarithromycin and roxithromycin are macrolides -- antibiotics that affect the electrical activity of the heart muscle and are thought to increase the risk of fatal heart rhythm problems, the researchers said.No increased in risk was observed with roxithromycin. While the absolute increase in risk with clarithromycin was small, the team said, it was one of the more commonly used antibiotics in many countries... thus the total number of excess cardiac deaths may not be negligible. The researchers called for their findings to be confirmed in further studies, even as a host of other experts pointed out that the study did not warrant a halt to clarithromycin use. There were shortcomings in the paper, including that the researchers had no data on whether patients smoked or were obese -- which could explain some of the differences in death rates, said Kevin McConway, an applied statistics professor at The Open University.Since in any case the cardiac death rate while on these drugs is very small, this isn't a risk that I personally would worry about anyway, he wrote in a reaction distributed by the Science Media Centre.Mike Knapton of the British Heart Foundation said it was already known that doctors should exercise caution when prescribing clarithromycin to patients with a certain heart syndrome. The bottom line is no one should be taking antibiotics unless they absolutely have to and doctors should give careful consideration before prescribing them, he said.

Oil prices fall, US contract hits January low

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - World oil prices fell Tuesday , with the New York benchmark below $95 a barrel for the first time since January ahead of the weekly US inventories report and the contract's expiration.West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for delivery in September tumbled $1.93, closing at $94.48 a barrel. In London Brent North Sea crude for October delivery, the key European futures contract, slipped a modest four cents to finish at $101.56 a barrel.Earlier in the session Brent sank to $101.07, its lowest level since late June 2013.The September WTI was under technical pressure as speculative traders sold off ahead of Wednesday's contract expiration, said Robert Yawger of Mizuho Securities USA.People are unwinding some of the contract they have on their book, Yawger said. The downward trend was exacerbated by market expectations of a third consecutive week of increases in crude oil supplies at the Cushing, Oklahoma terminal, the price settlement point for WTI, said Yawger. The Cushing build was due in part to a Kansas refinery outage since early August caused by a fire. Reports that the refinery could come back on line quickly failed to move WTI higher, Yawger said.Overall US crude inventories are expected to fall by 900,000 barrels, according to a poll of analysts by Dow Jones Newswires.Brent extended its losses after shedding $1.93 and settling at a 14-month low Monday. The downswing that has been observed in recent weeks and was briefly interrupted last Friday is continuing. It is still under pressure from a combination of factors: plentiful supply, a lack of supply outages and weak refinery demand, Commerzbank said in a research note.

Dollar firms after upbeat US housing data

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar strengthened against other major currencies Tuesday after US data showed an encouraging surge in housing construction and inflation remained tame.US housing starts jumped 15.7 percent in July to the highest pace since last November, and building permits gained 8.1 percent.A slight 0.1 percent rise in US consumer prices in June month-over-month left the annual rate up 2.0 percent, a level the Federal Reserve's monetary policy makers have regarded as non-threatening.Weak eurozone and British data earlier in the day already had spurred gains in the greenback. Eurozone exports fell 0.5 percent in June, narrowing the single-currency bloc's trade surplus to a sliver.Britain's annual inflation rate slid to 1.6 percent in July from 1.9 percent in June, a much larger slowdown than analysts expected that put a possible Bank of England rate hike further into the future. The outlook for the US economy leaves a lot to be desired but at the end of the day, dimmer prospects abroad is making the dollar and US assets more attractive to foreign investors, said Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management. She said the encouraging numbers on the US housing market would leave the Fed comfortable in its plan to exit its bond-purchase program in October. The dollar rally came ahead of Wednesday's release of the minutes of the last meeting of the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee.Analysts will pore over the minutes for signs of whether the FOMC might accelerate plans to raise its key interest rate, now expected in the second half of 2015.If they contain a less dovish bias, we could see further gains in the greenback, Lien said.

South Africa takes series as Zimbabwe crumbles

Posted:

BULAWAYO (AP) - South Africa claimed the one-day international series against Zimbabwe on Tuesday after a 61-run victory in the second game gave the tourists an unassailable 2-0 lead.South Africa made 257 after being put in at Queens Sports Club and Zimbabwes batting lineup crumbled in pursuit of only an average score on a tame pitch to be bowled out for 196 in the last over.Zimbabwe was 88-6 at one point before a minor flurry of runs down the order. Sean Williams provided the only prolonged resistance with his 55.Seamers Ryan McLaren took 3-21 and Wayne Parnell 3-38 for South Africa, which clinched the series with a game to spare and without front-line fast bowlers Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel. They are being rested for the three matches.Zimbabwe limited the visitors to 211-7 after winning the toss and applying pressure through its three-man spin attack. A late partnership of 41 between tailenders Wayne Parnell and Kyle Abbott took South Africa past 250, a below-par score on the batting-friendly surface but more than enough runs in the end.Faf du Plessis made 55 for his second straight half-century of the series, while Quinton de Kock (38), JP Duminy (36) and David Miller (45) all contributed. De Kock became the joint-fastest batsman to reach 1,000 ODI runs, equaling the 21 innings it took the West Indies Viv Richards and Englands Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott to reach the mark.Zimbabwe spinners Williams, Prosper Utseya and John Nyumbu all took two wickets each.Zimbabwes chase was effectively over inside 30 overs, however, as the top order collapsed. When Luke Jongwe edged to Hashim Amla at slip to be one of McLarens three wickets and leave Zimbabwe 88-6, it left just Williams and the tail. The left-handed Williams hit three fours and two sixes and No. 11 Brian Vitori launched two big sixes over mid-wicket at the very end, but it was in a lost cause for the home team.South Africa maintained its record of winning every one of its ODI series against its African neighbors ahead of the last game on Thursday.Steyn, Philander and Morkel will return for South Africa in an upcoming triangular series that also involves Australia.
