Tennis: Williams rolls over Jankovic to reach semis

Posted:

CINCINNATI (AFP) - Top-seeded Serena Williams cruised into the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Masters with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jelena Jankovic on Friday. She's beaten me several times, so I knew today I just had to be focused and do the best I could, said Williams, a 17-time Grand Slam champion who has never lifted the trophy in Cincinnati. She played some great points. I was just trying to not make many errors, stay focused and do the best that I could.Williams will face either former world number one Caroline Wozniacki, who beat fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-4, 7-6 (7/5).Second-seeded Simona Halep of Romania will get a chance to avenge her Roland Garros final loss to Maria Sharapova when she takes on the fifth-seeded Russian for a semi-final berth.Sharapova has beaten Halep in all four of their meetings, although both of their matches this year have gone three sets, first in Madrid and again in the gripping French Open final that saw Sharapova claim her fifth major crown. The winner of that match will play either ninth-seeded Ana Ivanovic or Ukrainian teenager Elina Svitolina, who vanquished Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the second round.Williams completed her win over Jankovic in less than an hour as she reached the last four without the loss of a set. The American fired seven aces and broke five times against the former number one.Williams won 10 of 14 career matches against Jankovic, last losing to her in 2010. She has beaten the Serb five times in the past two seasons.I definitely felt pretty good about today, I felt better, said Williams. My unforced errors are lower than they've been this year, so it's definitely going towards the right way. I don't think she played her best today and still she fought well. I was glad to have an opportunity to just get through that.I don't think I played great last week (semi-final loss on Montreal). I was just fighting to be in the tournament. I was mentally fighting really hard. I definitely feel like I'm playing better this week.

Tennis: Benneteau stuns Wawrinka to reach Cincy semis

CINCINNATI (AFP) - France's Julien Benneteau won 12 of the last 15 games to stun Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 in Cincinnati on Friday and reach the first Masters semi-final of his career.Benneteau, ranked 41st in the world, fired nine aces and broke the third-seeded Swiss four times in the 80-minute contest. He was quickly followed into the final four of the last major US Open tune-up by fifth-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic, who crushed 15th-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-0 in just 57 minutes.Raonic awaits the winner of the night's marquee men's match-up -- second-seeded Roger Federer taking on eighth-seeded Andy Murray.Murray, seeking his first title since his emotional Wimbledon triumph of 2013, holds a slim 11-10 edge over 17-time Grand Slam champion Federer in their career head-to-head.But it was Federer who won their most recent meeting, in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.I played a really good match against him in Australia, Federer said, although he knew that Murray was still recovering from back surgery.Murray goes into the match with the confidence of having saved two match points en route to a third-round win over big-serving American John Isner.I know I'm in for a tough one, Federer said.Benneteau next faces either sixth-seeded David Ferrer or fellow Spaniard Tommy Robredo who dispatched world number one Novak Djokovic in the third round. After sweeping through the first set in 27 minutes, Wawrinka could find no answer to Benneteau who broke for a 2-0 lead in the second set and rolled from there. He finished off the victory with an ace on the first of two match points. It's my best result in Masters 1000, said Benneteau. They are very, very difficult tournaments. It's top 45 players in the world. You don't have a lot of opportunities to make a very big result in Masters 1000. But the tournament is not done, and I still have a lot to do.Benneteau is making his ninth appearance in Cincinnati, a key tune-up event for the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the year that starts on August 25.His previous best showing was a quarter-final in 2009.

Football: Rooney ready to lead from the front for United

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Wayne Rooney believes he is ready to play a lead role in Louis van Gaal's Manchester United revolution after being appointed as the team's new captain.Van Gaal named Rooney as the United skipper on Tuesday and he will wear the armband as permanent captain for the first time in Saturday's Premier League opener against Swansea at Old Trafford. Before handing him the armband, United manager van Gaal reminded Rooney he must be a role model for United players and fans both on the pitch and off it.His indiscipline has cost him in the past, but Rooney says he is now up to the task of being a responsible and successful captain. It's a massive role to take on, I'm aware of that, the responsibility of it. I feel I'm ready at this stage in my career to do it, Rooney told United Uncovered.I spoke to the manager and he decided that I was right to take the role which I am delighted with. It's a great honour.I will perform the role as best I can and hopefully help the team to be successful.Rooney has been stand-in captain on several occasions during his 10-year spell at United, but this is the first time he has been given the honour on a full-time basis. However, he can draw from the experience of playing under the captaincy of inspirational leaders like Roy Keane, John Terry and Steven Gerrard for both United and England.I've played under some great captains for club and country so I will take a little bit of what they have brought to the role and try to use that, Rooney added. Then I'll try to lead the players on the pitch with hard work, dedication, and that's what we really want to do -- we want to show the fans that we care and want to win.

Oil surges on news of Ukraine attack on Russian convoy

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices rebounded Friday amid mounting Ukraine geopolitical tensions after Kiev said Ukrainian forces had destroyed part of a Russian military convoy that entered its territory.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in September, which had lost more than $2 Thursday, advanced $1.77 to close at $97.35 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Brent North Sea crude for October jumped $1.46 to $103.53 a barrel in London trade. The European benchmark futures contract for September on Thursday tumbled $2.27 on its last day of trade. The announcement by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko that government artillery had destroyed a considerable part of the convoy late Thursday after it crossed into Ukraine rattled markets. The reports sent US and European stocks tumbling into the red, though Wall Street later rebounded. When we saw the headlines about Ukraine attacking this convoy, it made the market nervous about a Russian invasion that can lead to other conflicts, said Andy Lipow, an independent analyst.Russia, which has repeatedly rejected Western claims that it is backing the pro-Russia insurgency in Ukraine, denied that it had sent a military convoy into Ukraine.Russia is the worlds second-biggest oil producer and Ukraine is a major conduit for Russian natural gas exports to Europe.Although we have yet to see any supply disruption, a further escalation of the conflict certainly could lead to perhaps a disruption to gas supply transiting though Ukraine which could lead to the European Union buying more oil, Lipow said.

Dhoni defiant but England on top in fifth Test

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni stood alone as the tourists suffered yet another batting collapse to hand England the advantage on the first day of the fifth and final Test at The Oval.At Friday's close, England were 62 without loss in reply to India's meagre 148 all out, a deficit of 86 runs.England captain Alastair Cook was 24 not out and Australia-born Sam Robson, driving well after a run of low scores, 33 not out as the hosts looked to extend their 2-1 series lead.Earlier, Dhoni made 82 -- more than 55 percent of India's runs -- in an innings where only Murali Vijay (18) and Ravichandran Ashwin (13) also got into double figures.Seam-bowling all-rounders Chris Woakes and Chris Jordan took three wickets apiece after James Anderson and Stuart Broad, who had two each, quickly justified Cook's decision to field first in overcast conditions on a green-tinged pitch. To bowl them out for under 150 is fantastic, and the way the boys batted at the end was brilliant, Woakes, whose return of three for 30 was a Test-best, told Sky Sports.Dhoni played pretty well. When he's in that sort of mood he's pretty good at it. But we would have taken that (148) at the start of the day, added the Warwickshire all-rounder, now in his fourth Test after an Oval debut against Australia last year. The pitch was a little bit helpful for us today and we got the rewards for it.India, as in their innings and 54-run defeat inside three days in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, lost five wickets before lunch.Their top order again lacked the technique or the application to cope with deliveries that swung and seamed off the pitch. And but for Ian Bell dropping last man Ishant Sharma in the slips, India would have been all out for 95.Instead the recalled paceman helped Dhoni add 58 for the last wicket -- easily the best stand of the innings.Thursday saw the experienced Dhoni, who top-scored with 71 in India's first innings 152 at Old Trafford, joking about his horrible batting technique. But no one could fault his resolve.Under grey skies promising swing movement, England had to wait just four balls for their first wicket. Anderson, who started this match seven wickets shy of Ian Botham's England record of 383 Test wickets, had opener Gautam Gambhir, trying to withdraw his bat, caught behind for a golden duck.Broad, passed fit despite suffering a broken nose while batting in Manchester, then dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara (four) when the ball deflected onto his stumps via pad and arm.Virat Kohli had arrived in England with a stellar reputation. But his miserable series continued when, playing no stroke, he was lbw to first change Jordan for six. That meant the talented batsman had scored a mere 114 runs in nine innings this series at 12.66.Jordan then caught and bowled Ajinkya Rahane for the first duck of his Test career.Vijay survived for more than 90 minutes but he fell when edging Woakes to Joe Root at fourth slip.At lunch, India were 43 for five, with Dhoni six not out. That soon became 44 for six when recalled all-rounder Stuart Binny edged Anderson to Cook at first slip.Wickets continued to fall as the floodlights pierced the gloom and India should have been out for under a hundred. But after Sharma's reprieve, Dhoni slashed Jordan over the slip cordon for a four that took India to three figures and later drove him over extra-cover for six.Dhoni's defiant knock -- which featured 66 runs in boundaries (15 fours and a six) -- ended when the number six pulled Broad straight to Woakes at long leg.England then got through to the close, although Cook had an escape, on nine, when Bhuvneshwar Kumar appealed for lbw against the left-hander.Replays suggested Kumar had been unlucky but India's ongoing objection to the Decision Review System meant they could not challenge the not out verdict of umpire Paul Reiffel, the former Australia paceman.

Prior set for Achilles surgery in September

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England wicketkeeper Matt Prior on Friday said he will have surgery on a long-standing Achilles problem next month.Prior withdrew from England duty last month in a bid to get back to full fitness as he battled Achilles, quad and hand injuries. The 32-year-olds position in England team had already come under considerable scrutiny after below-par performances with both gloves and bat in the Test series against India. After he pulled out, Priors place for the final three Tests went to Jos Buttler and he will remain out of the national set-up for the foreseeable future as he recovers from the operation.Im still hurt, Ive seen the specialists and surgeons and everything else. Im having an operation on September 4 on my Achilles, said Prior in an interview with ESPNcricinfo. My Achilles has been the main issue, its been pretty bad, to be honest. Its not the end, but there is a long road back and it starts from September 4 with four months of rehab to get as fit as I possibly can.It was a massive decision, but I went as long as I could. Its been shown by specialists that I couldnt physically have gone on any longer. So its now time to get it right, get fit again and come back stronger.Prior earned the first of 79 England Test caps against the West Indies in 2007.

European stocks troubled by Ukraine hostilities

LONDON (AFP) - European stocks closed lower on Friday, giving up earlier solid gains after news that Ukrainian artillery had destroyed part of a Russian military column spooked investors. In Frankfurt, the DAX tumbled 1.44 percent to 9,092.60, while in Paris the CAC 40 slid 0.74 percent to 4,174.36 points. London's benchmark FTSE 100 index ended just above the flatline at 6,689.08 points, compared with Thursday's close.A feeling of complacency had been creeping back into investor psychology this week with a general feeling that perhaps the declines at the start of the month were overdone, said Jasper Lawler at CMC Markets. The encounter in Ukraine was a hefty reminder that geopolitics cannot be ignored.Equity markets turned lower after Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that Kiev had shelled and destroyed part of a Russian armed convoy as it crossed into eastern Ukraine.European leaders hit out at Russia, with Brussels urging Russia to put an immediate stop to all forms of hostilities near the Ukrainian border and Britain summoning Moscow's envoy. The Kremlin hit back, warning to Kiev not to interfere with a convoy of vehicles it deployed to carry humanitarian aid to eastern Ukraine areas controlled by pro-Moscow secessionists.News of the rising tensions in Ukraine sent investors running for the safe havens of European bonds, sending the yields on German and French state debt to new record lows. It also hit US shares, which had posted two straight days of gains as investors shrugged off geopolitical tensions over signs the US economy continued to grow.In mid-afternoon trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.38 percent to 16,650.58.The broad-based S&P 500 lost 0.39 percent at 1,947.62, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index fell 0.13 percent to 4,477.11.Oil prices gained in New York on the news as traders fretted about an interruption in supplies from Russia, the world's second-largest oil producer.- Euro gains -In foreign exchange trade Friday, the euro rose to $1.3389 from $1.3365 late on Thursday in New York. Rob Wood, an economist at Berenberg, said growth could well get more lopsided in the near term as events in Ukraine hit demand for exported goods while domestic demand expands rapidly. The upbeat British data stands in contrast to the 18-country eurozone, where growth ground to a halt in the second quarter dragged down by top economies France and Germany, official data showed on Thursday.European stock markets had risen on Thursday as data fuelled speculation that the European Central Bank would be forced to roll out stimulus measures.Bad news has resumed its position as the familiar rather than the rare story, said Capital Spreads dealer Jonathan Sudaria.Fears of a European recession and deflationary slump have been welcomed by markets because of the prospect of a new ECB stimulus programme, he said.Asian stock markets closed higher on Friday, tracking Wall Street gains overnight, as traders shrugged off news of a rise in initial claims for US unemployment insurance benefits. On the London Bullion Market, the price of gold fell to $1,296 an ounce from $1,313.50 on Thursday.

Apple begins storing users' personal data on servers in China

Posted:

BEIJING (Reuters) - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) has begun keeping the personal data of some Chinese users on servers in mainland China, marking the first time the tech giant is storing user data on Chinese soil. The storage of user data in China represents a departure from the policies of some technology companies, notably Google Inc (GOOGL.O), which has long refused to build data centers in China due to censorship and privacy concerns.Apple said the move was part of an effort to improve the speed and reliability of its iCloud service, which lets users store pictures, e-mail and other data. Positioning data centers as close to customers as possible means faster service. The data will be kept on servers provided by China Telecom Corp Ltd (0728.HK), the country's third-largest wireless carrier, Apple said in a statement on Friday.Apple takes user security and privacy very seriously, it said. We have added China Telecom to our list of data center providers to increase bandwidth and improve performance for our customers in mainland china. All data stored with our providers is encrypted. China Telecom does not have access to the content.A source with knowledge of the situation said the encryption keys for Apple's data on China Telecom servers would be stored offshore and not made available to China Telecom.Apple has said it has devised encryption systems for services such as iMessage that even Apple itself cannot unlock. But some experts expressed scepticism that Apple would be able to withhold user data in the event of a government request. If they're making out that the data is protected and secure that's a little disingenuous because if they want to operate a business here, that'd have to comply with demands from the authorities, said Jeremy Goldkorn, director of Danwei.com, a research firm focused on Chinese media, internet and consumers. On the other hand if they don't store Chinese user data on a Chinese server they're basically risking a crackdown from the authorities.Goldkorn added that data stored in the United States is subject to similar U.S. regulations where the government can use court orders to demand private data.A spokesman for China Telecom declined to comment.GOOGLE, MICROSOFTWith its rising middle class, China has become an increasingly important market for Apple. Sales of the iPhone rose almost 50 percent in China in the three months ended June and salvaged an otherwise lackluster quarter for the Cupertino company.Other companies have opted not to situate servers in China, where they would have to comply with local laws.Google publicly abandoned China in 2010 and moved its services, including its search engine, to Hong Kong-based servers after refusing to comply with Chinese government censorship. Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) also does not have servers for its email service in China.Yahoo Inc (YHOO.O) came under criticism in 2005 after it handed to Chinese authorities emails that led to the imprisonment of Shi Tao, a journalist who obtained and leaked an internal censorship order the government had sent Chinese media.China doesn't want any digital service offered to Chinese people to be hosted offshore, said Goldkorn. I suppose it was inevitable that Apple had to comply if they were using foreign servers for Chinese user data.In July, Apple's iPhone was branded a danger to China's national security by state media, because of the smartphone's ability to track and time-stamp user locations. Apple denied tracking user locations.Apple has frequently come under fire from Chinese state media, which accused the company of providing user data to U.S. intelligence agencies and have called for 'severe punishment'.The U.S. company has strongly denied working with any government agencies to create back doors into its products or servers. We have also never allowed access to our servers. And we never will, Apple has previously stated.News of the China Telecom deal emerged Thursday after a local government website in the southeastern province of Fujian announced that iCloud had migrated to China Telecom's servers after 15 months of rigorous testing and review. The website article is no longer available on the site.
