Federer gets 300th Masters win in Cincy

Posted:

MASON (AP) - Roger Federer won his opening match at the Western & Southern Open on Wednesday, a three-set victory over Vasek Pospisil that was his 300th career victory during a Masters tournament. He's the first player to reach the mark Rafael Nadal is second with 281 such wins. After a two-hour struggle, the second-seeded Federer finished off Pospisil 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-2 and advanced in his quest for an unprecedented fifth title in Cincinnati. The 300 wins is a nice, round number, Federer said. I've had some more important ones over the one today. Nevertheless, it's nice to reach such milestones.Federer didn't take control until the middle of the third set, when he broke Pospisil's serve twice for a 4-1 lead. Both players were sloppy in the breezy conditions. You just hope to get through the first match in tough conditions, Federer said. It's important to stay calm even though it's frustrating for much of the match.Top-seeded Serena Williams kept her poise, rallying from behind in both tiebreakers for a 7-6 (7), 7-6 (7) win over Samantha Stosur, the Australian player who beat her in the 2011 U.S. Open final. It's good when you play a lot of close matches and you come out on top I'm defeated, I'm down and I come back and win, she said. That's very good.Stosur got ahead 4-0 in the first tiebreaker before Williams rallied. Stosur had two set points in the second tiebreaker, but hit a shot into the net and another one long. Williams clinched it when Stosur dumped another shot into the net.Against a player like that you think, 'Oh, there is a chance there,' Stosur said. More often than not they come up with the goods to shut you down.By contrast, Andy Murray needed little more than an hour to win his opening match, facing only three break points and fending all of them off during a 6-3, 6-3 win over Joao Sousa.Murray is still trying to return to form following back surgery last September. He also made a break with coach Ivan Lendl in March that was a big adjustment. It's been a tough year, Murray said. There have been a few things happen. Obviously coming back from surgery is hard. To me now, that isn't in any way an excuse. Now I have had enough time to get over it. Obviously with Ivan, that was also tough.No. 4 Tomas Berdych was ousted in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 upset loss to Yen-Hsun Lu. John Isner, who lost the Cincinnati final last year to Nadal, moved on with a solid 6-3, 7-6 (1) victory over Marinko Matosevic.I played so unbelievably well here last year, Isner said. I'm off to a very good start this year. I love this tournament. I feel very comfortable here. There was an upset in the women's draw. Third-seeded Petra Kvitova had trouble with her serve and lost to Elina Svitolina 6-2, 7-6 (2). Kvitova had nine double-faults and made just 52 percent of her first serves.I'm disappointed how I played today, for sure, she said. From the beginning, I didn't feel very comfortable out there.

Dortmund beat Bayern 2-0 to win German Super Cup

Posted:

FRANKFURT (AP) - Borussia Dortmund beat Bayern Munich 2-0 in the German Super Cup on Wednesday to win the first domestic title of the season.Dortmund shut down former teammate Robert Lewandowski, while on the other side Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored in the 23rd minute and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sealed the victory in the 62nd.We defended sensationally and allowed very little, Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said. We stayed with it for 90 minutes, but we are still a long way from being where we want to be.Both teams played without many of their World Cup stars, who have only recently returned to duty.Dortmund also beat Bayern 4-2 in last season's Super Cup, but Bayern went on to sweep the domestic double ahead of Dortmund. The Bundesliga season kicks off on Aug. 22.Lewandowski, the Bundesliga's top scorer last season with Dortmund, stayed scoreless in his official debut for Bayern. He had one shot on goal that was well saved by Mitch Langerak. Lewandowski moved to Bayern on a free transfer in the offseason and was greeted with boos from the mostly partisan crowd of 80,667 at Dortmund's stadium. It was our first game and our attack was not good. Dortmund played better, Lewandowski said.Bayern's defensive midfielder Javi Martinez, who played as one of three defenders, left the match on a stretcher after 31 minutes with a left-knee injury.Bayern coach Pep Guardiola later said he feared that Martinez would be out for a long time, while German media speculated that he had torn ligaments. We still need time. But the bad news is the injury to Javi Martinez. We will know more on Thursday, but I think he will be out for a long time, Guardiola said.Winger Franck Ribery also sat out the match with a reported knee injury, after announcing earlier that he was quitting the France national team. Netherlands winger Arjen Robben also missed the match for Bayern.Dortmund went ahead after a one-two between Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang and some clumsy defending by David Alaba. Mkhitaryan drove into the roof of the net from inside the penalty box.Aubameyang headed in the winner from a cross by Lukasz Piszczek - then put on a Spiderman face mask before being substituted.Manuel Neuer, one of Germany's three World Cup winners to start for Bayern, turned away shots from Sebastian Kehl and Jonas Hofmann late in the first half to prevent his team from falling behind by an even bigger margin.Neuer also had to race back to clear from the line when a back pass from Martinez nearly took him by surprise earlier in the match.Lewandowski had his only chance at the start of the second half but Langerak, usually a backup for Roman Weidenfeller, stood his ground and saved with his chest.Langerak also turned away a free kick by Alaba, the only other time Bayern came close to scoring despite bringing on Mario Goetze, who scored the only goal in Germany's 1-0 win over Argentina in the World Cup final in Brazil. Neuer had to race far out of his area to foil a last-gasp Dortmund attempt.

Mo Farah wins 10,000 at Euros in British 1-2

Posted:

ZURICH (AP) - Mo Farah looked a picture of perfect health on Wednesday and made the image even better by adding another gold medal, a new Mobot dance and a hug from his friend Usain Bolt. After being airlifted to a hospital with a stomach ailment barely a month ago, the Olympic and world champion won the 10,000 metres at the European Championships on Wednesday, setting him up for yet another long-distance double with the 5,000 still to come.Farah led a British one-two as Andy Vernon swept past Turkey's Ali Kaya in the final metres to claim silver inches. After skipping the Commonwealth Games because of the four-day hospital stay and momentary heart worries, Farah looked composed from the opening gun, performing with maximum efficiency and minimum sweat to win his fourth straight European Championship event.I didn't want to let people down after missing the Commonwealth Games, he said.He already won the Euro long-distance double in 2010 and the 5,000 in 2012, his only race two years ago as he was preparing for his Olympic double. In cold and blustery weather on Wednesday, Farah finished in a slow 28 minutes, 8.11 seconds, 0.55 seconds ahead of Vernon who beat Kaya by 0.01 seconds.Farah's victory would normally have been a given at the Euros, but had looked doubtful earlier this summer when after a training run, he collapsed on his bathroom floor in Park City, Utah, and had to be airlifted to a hospital. They thought something was wrong with my heart. It was scary at times, Farah said.Once that worry proved ill-founded, further tests on his stomach also failed to come up with a clear diagnosis. So, he was given the all-clear to compete. After Wednesday's race, Farah went up in the VIP stands to seek out Bolt, where the sprint and long-distance greats embraced. He is someone who has been there and done it and he is a friend of mine, Farah said.On top of that, he showed off a new version of his signature Mobot move where he brings his hands on top of his head in the shape of a heart. On Wednesday, he did a little dance on top.Boring seeing the same picture, so I said I'd give them something, Farah said.Farah was also proven right when, moments ahead of the men's 100 final, he predicted that Dasaolu will win.Sure enough, James Dasaolu came through to take gold in 10.06 seconds ahead of double defending champion Christophe Lemaitre of France and fellow Briton Harry Aikines-Aryeetey.And making it triple gold for Britain on Wednesday night, Tiffany Porter won the women's 100 hurdles ahead of France's Cindy Billaud. In the women's 100, heptathlete turned sprinter Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands claimed the first of what she hopes will be three golds, turning on the turbo late to win the final in 11.12 seconds into a strong headwind. She bead Myriam Soumare of France by 0.04 seconds, while Britain's Ashleigh Nelson took bronze in 11.22. Defending champion Ivet Lalova of Bulgaria came fifth.Schippers is also favored to win the 200 later in the week and will compete with the Dutch sprint relay team over the weekend. This is giving me a shot of energy, she said of her gold-medal run. Now, I have to recover as quickly as possible because tomorrow morning I have my 200 heat.In the men's discus Germamy's Robert Harting was as dominating as ever, adding the second European title to three world championships and one Olympic gold. He beat his longtime rival Gerd Kanter of Estonia and Poland's Robert Urbanek. All day, rain, wind and cold temperatures hit Zurich but the men's race walkers still managed to create a thrilling finish as Miguel Angel Lopez of Spain pulled away from two Russians to win the 20-kilometre event. Aleksandr Ivanov took silver and Denis Strelkov took bronze. In the decathlon, Andrei Krauchanka of Belarus took gold ahead of France's Kevin Mayer and Ilya Shkurenyov of Russia. In the women's long jump, Eloyse Lesueur of France won ahead of Ivana Spanovic of Serbia and Darya Klishina of Russia.

Pakistan, Sri Lanka second Test starts today

Posted:

COLOMBO (AP) – The match will start at 9:30am (PST). Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq said they will try to spoil Jayawardene's farewell. Our plan is simple, it is to get him out early in tomorrow's final test match, Misbah said.Misbah said the official scrutiny on the bowling action of his ace off-spinner Saeed Ajmal will not be a distraction to his team. That is not a point of worry for us, he has been through this process before and cleared, Misbah said.I hope he will be fine, and we are just concentrating on this game. Looking forward to playing good cricket and try and win this, and level the series.Ajmal was reported for a suspect action after the first test in Galle, where Sri Lanka won by seven wickets on Sunday. His action was cleared in 2009, and his doosra, a delivery that spins away from right-handed batsmen, was also okayed two years ago.Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews says they will be able to set aside their emotions in the second cricket test against Pakistan in order to win and give an ideal sendoff for the retiring Mahela Jayawardene. On Thursday, Jayawardene will be playing his 149th and final test on his home ground at Sinhalese Sports Club. It's going to be an emotional game for us, Mathews said on Wednesday. When we walk into a game we want to win all the time, regardless of what happens around you. The best thing we could do is to try and win the game and give him the best farewell that we could possibly give him.Seam bowler Shaminda Eranga was doubtful for the game with a hip injury, while batsman Kithruwan Vithanage also nurses a finger injury. Mathews said if they don't play their replacements would be picked from Lahiru Thirimanne, opening batsman Dimuth Karunaratne and Binura Fernando, a 19-year-old uncapped seam bowler.

England need win at the Oval to cement rebound

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - England is on the verge of putting to bed one of the most trying chapters in its test cricket history.India could still extend it, however, in the fifth and final test at the Oval starting on Friday.A summer for England that began with a first ever test series defeat on home soil to Sri Lanka worsened when India won the second test at Lords to lead this series 1-0. With his captaincy and position on the line, and at risk of losing his main bowler, Alastair Cook led his sides fightback at the Rose Bowl and Old Trafford to be in front 2-1.Humiliated by an innings and 54-run defeat at Old Trafford, India can still save face by winning the final test and tying the series. Here are five things to know ahead of the match:ALI HAS INDIA IN A SPIN: Moeen Ali, again, was the second-innings star for England in the Old Trafford test, taking 4-39 as India was bowled out for 161. His performance followed match-winning, second-innings figures of 6-67 at the Rose Bowl. The lack of an obvious replacement for the retired Graeme Swann led England at the start of the series to go for an unbalanced all-pace attack and pick Ali as a batsman who could spin a bit. But his offspin has emerged as a major weapon, an unexpected bonus for England, and covered up for his batting weakness against pace bowling. His 19 wickets in the series are second only to Ray Illingworths 20 in 1967 by an England spinner at home against India.INDIA TOP ORDER YET TO FIRE: Despite half of day two being lost to rain, the fourth test was won by England in three days, as it bowled India out for 152 and 161. India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was furious with his sides effort, and hinted he had been unhappy with his vaunted batsmen throughout the series. To some extent, the performance of No. 8, 9, 10 and 11 so far in the series has camouflaged the question of the top order not performing, Dhoni said. The biggest disappointment has been No. 4 Virat Kohli, who has a career average of 40 but a series average of 14. His shortcomings have been a big factor in Indias inability to create scoreboard pressure.ANDERSON TARGETS BOTHAM RECORD: James Anderson is eight wickets away from overtaking Ian Bothams record haul of 383 and becoming Englands leading wicket-taker in tests. Anderson managed five dismissals in the fourth test to be on 376, and will back himself at the Oval. It has been a troubled series for Anderson, who at one point was facing a four-test ban from a charge of pushing and abusing Ravindra Jadeja. He admitted it was a distraction during the second and third tests, yet still has a series-leading 21 wickets.WILL INDIA STICK OR TWIST? India made three changes ahead of the third test, with opening batsman Gautam Gambhir in for Shikhar Dhawan, Ravichandran Ashwin replacing Rohit Sharma to provide a spin option, and Varun Aaron coming in for Mohammed Shami in the bowling attack. Aaron was the most successful, taking 3-97. Ashwin bowled economically, conceding 29 runs from 14 overs but was ultimately wicketless. Gambhir made only 22 runs in his two innings opening the batting, and will undoubtedly be concerned that Dhawan, averaging 20, may regain his position. India will also be praying fast bowler Ishant Sharma is ready to return from a leg injury that saw him miss the two tests after the victory at Lords, where Sharma took test-best figures of 7-74.BROAD HAS BROKEN NOSE: Stuart Broad is expected to start for England, despite missing training on Tuesday after breaking his nose when a bouncer from Aaron crashed through his helmet and into his face during Englands batting innings. Broad, who was unable to collect his man-of-the-match award for his first-innings bowling figures of 6-25, tweeted that he watched his teammates seal victory from hospital, and he would have to wear a mask at the Oval. He did not specify whether it would just be for batting.
