Tennis: Tsonga downs Murray to reach Toronto semi-finals

Posted:

TORONTO (AFP) - Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Andy Murray for the first time in six years on Friday with a 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 6-4 win which took him into the Toronto Masters semi-finals.The victory, in just over two and a quarter hours, marked another disappointment for Murray, who has not won a title since his historic success at Wimbledon 13 months ago.The 27-year-old's highlights this season have been limited to a pair of semi-finals, at Acapulco and Roland Garros.Murray, who led 3-0 in the deciding set, had not played this week since the second round after receiving a walkover when Richard Gasquet withdrew from their scheduled third round clash with an abdominal strain. It's just disappointing because it's important to play matches, said Murray, still trying to lift his form after back surgery 10 months ago and playing his first event since Wimbledon a month ago.If you've had a break for a while, ideally you want to try and play as many matches as you can.Tennis and sport really can change a lot from one day to the next. Jo is a top player. He's a fantastic athlete. When his game is on, he's very tough to beat.It was the second upset of a top 10 player in as many days for Tsonga, who knocked out world number one Novak Djokovic in the third round.Tsonga, seeded 13th, stood 1-9 in his career head-to-head series with world number nine Murray, whose ranking is at its lowest since 2008.Tsonga's only previous win over the Scot came in the Australian Open first round in 2008, the year the Frenchman burst into prominence as a finalist at Melbourne Park. The Frenchman will next play the winner from seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov and South African Kevin Anderson.Tsonga ended with 17 aces, 42 winners and 35 unforced errors in his typical big-hitting style. Murray had 20 winners and 26 unforced errors.Murray levelled at a set each, saving a pair of break points to hold for 5-4 before breaking Tsonga to love for a 6-4 scoreline in the second. The Briton, coached by former women's champion Amelie Mauresmo, then began the third set with a break, only to lose the edge in the fifth game as Tsonga retrieved the break. The French player grabbed the lead 4-3 off another break of the fragile eighth seed but had to work to wrap up victory three games later with Murray saving three match points before netting a backhand and then falling victim to a Tsonga return winner.Murray won the Canadian event in 2009 and 2010 and stands 21-6 overall at the tournament.Tsonga has now reached the semi-finals in three of four Canadian editions.

US strikes IS targets in Iraq with drones and jets

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US forces launched a second wave of air strikes against Islamic extremists near Arbil in northern Iraq on Friday, destroying a militant convoy and killing a mortar team, the Pentagon said.Shortly after 1400 GMT, US drones destroyed a mortar position and killed a group of militants. Just over an hour later four F/A-18 jets hit a seven-vehicle Islamic State convoy with eight laser-guided bombs. The US military continued to attack ISIL targets near Arbil today conducting two additional air strikes to help defend the city where US personnel are assisting the government of Iraq, Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said.President Barack Obama announced Thursday that he had authorized US air strikes to prevent fighters from the so-called Islamic State from attacking the capital of the Iraqi Kurdish region. The strikes are also designed to break the siege of Mount Sinjar, where IS forces have cornered and reportedly threatened to kill thousands of civilian refugees from the Yazidi religious minority.Overnight, a first strike saw an F/A-18 hit an IS artillery position with a 500lb bomb. Shortly beforehand US military planes had dropped food and water to the beleaguered Yazidis.Friday's second wave saw unmanned drones brought into action.Remotely piloted aircraft struck a terrorist mortar position. When ISIL fighters returned to the site moments later, the terrorists were attacked again and successfully eliminated, Kirby said.At approximately 11:20 a.m. EDT, four F/A-18 aircraft successfully struck a stationary ISIL convoy of seven vehicles and a mortar position near Arbil, his statement continued. The aircraft executed two planned passes. On both runs, each aircraft dropped one laser guided bomb making a total of eight bombs dropped on target neutralizing the mortar and convoy.

Golf: Palmer matches McIlroy for lead at rain-hit PGA

Posted:

LOUISVILLE (AFP) - Top-ranked Rory McIlroy clung to a share of the second-round lead Friday at the rain-hit PGA Championship with Ryan Palmer, who birdied the last two holes to pull level.Palmer, who began in the opening group during a heavy downpour, sank a 12-foot birdie putt at 17 and two-putted for birdie from 24 feet at the par-5 18th to fire a one-under 70 and reach the clubhouse on seven-under 135.McIlroy, seeking his second major title in a row after winning the British Open three weeks ago at Royal Liverpool, had struggled early with a bogey at 12, but answered with a 12-foot birdie putt at 13 and a 16-foot birdie putt at 15.The 25-year-old Northern Ireland star seized a two-stroke lead with an eagle at the par-5 18th, putting his approach short of the green but holing out from 32 feet to reach eight-under.McIlroy found the rough and a greenside bunker at the second and missed a 12-foot par putt to fall back.Britain's Lee Westwood and American Kevin Chappell, both on six-under after 65s on Thursday, were set for afternoon starts.A pack two strokes off the pace included Canada's Graham DeLaet, Americans Steve Stricker and Jim Furyk, Sweden's Henrik Stenson and Italy's Edoardo Molinari.Former world number one Tiger Woods was set for an afternoon start as well, hoping to improve on an opening 74 as he fights to make the cut.

Japan creating fuel-cell powered underwater vehicle

Posted:

TOKYO (AFP) - Japan's defence ministry on Friday said it was developing a fuel-cell powered unmanned underwater vehicle but disputed a report that it was working with Washington on a submarine using the environmentally-friendly technology. The report in the top-selling Yomiuri Shimbun, citing unnamed ministry officials, said the unmanned, 10-metre (33-feet) long sub could run for a month under the sea on a single charge before returning to home base. However, the defence ministry later told AFP that it had not agreed to joint development plans with Washington, but confirmed that it was working independently on what it called an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV).It supplied an artist's rendering of a yellow, submarine-shaped vehicle cruising the ocean depths.A ministry official said the department had earmarked 2.6 billion yen ($25 million) over five years to develop a fuel-cell system for the vehicle, adding that it would not be equipped with torpedoes or other weaponry. The UUV is purely for patrolling -- it's not a military weapon, the official added.Japan is a leader in fuel cells which generate emissions-free energy through a chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, and are most commonly associated with environmentally friendly vehicles.

China court jails British, US investigators hired by GSK

Posted:

SHANGHAI (AFP) - A British investigator once hired by scandal-hit pharmaceutical giant GSK in China was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in jail for breaching privacy laws, a Shanghai court said Friday.Peter Humphrey and his American wife Yu Yingzeng were hired to investigate the source of a lurid sex tape of the China boss of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), shortly before the British firm became embroiled in bribery allegations.Defendant Peter William Humphrey who had committed the crime of illegally obtaining citizens personal information was sentenced by the court to two years and six months in jail, with a fine of 200,000 yuan ($32,000) and will be expelled from the country, a court official said, adding that his wife Yu would also be jailed. Both Humphrey and Yu Yingzeng said they regretted their actions and expressed their apologies when making their final statements, court spokeswoman Tang Liming added.GSK is the most high-profile target of wide-ranging Chinese inquiries into foreign pharmaceutical firms, as Beijing also mounts probes into overseas companies in sectors ranging from cars to baby milk. But at no point did prosecutors mention the British firm when questioning Humphrey or Yu on Friday, according to transcripts posted online by the court. The couples son, Harvey Humphrey, told AFP that he was very sad about the verdict.I did not expect the sentence to be that long. I thought they would be jailed but I did not expect it would be for that long, he said.He also said that he hoped the authorities will take into account my parents poor health conditions, without giving details.- Information resold to clients -Chinese prosecutors accused the couple of illegally obtaining more than 200 pieces of information on Chinese individuals, which they resold to clients.Generally speaking... I dont dispute (the prosecutors indictment), Humphrey told the Number One Peoples Intermediate Court in Shanghai, it said on a verified microblog account. It posted a picture of Humphrey facing a judge wearing a dark suit while Yu wore a smart red jacket, each of them with an arm gripped by a uniformed officer.Foreign media were not allowed into the courtroom. The sentence was announced late in the evening after a trial which lasted almost 12 hours. Yus jail term was two years and she was fined 150,000 yuan. The spokeswoman also said that the two did not appeal in court. We sold consulting services, which sometimes included personal information, Humphrey said according to the court, adding that he was unclear about the relevant laws and details of particular cases. We asked other companies to help us to obtain peoples household registration information, and we would pay a fee for the service, he said.He denied an accusation that he had tailed clients, but said he may have sent staff to stand outside an office to monitor it.The services we supplied aim at reducing risks, especially risks in regard to fraud and corruption, he added.Yu said she had no dispute with the evidence provided by the prosecution, but denied that she had sold personal data to other firms. We gathered information not so we could sell it, but so we could write reports, she said, adding that household registration data was obtained to check on corruption.- Near-perfect conviction rate -The case has raised concerns amongst foreign investors in China, who often hire independent investigators to conduct due-diligence investigations into Chinese companies.Chinese courts have a near-perfect conviction rate in criminal cases -- 99.93 percent last year.Chinese authorities are investigating several foreign pharmaceutical firms over pricing and other issues.GSK has been accused of systemic corruption, and in May its former China boss Mark Reilly was charged with ordering employees to bribe hospitals, doctors and health institutions to gain billions of dollars in revenue.Chinas healthcare sector is widely considered to be riddled with graft, partly the result of an opaque tendering system for drugs and doctors low salaries.Humphrey, a former journalist and longtime China resident who founded an investigative firm, ChinaWhys, was reportedly hired by GSK to look into the origin of a covertly filmed video of Reilly and a girlfriend.Humphreys wife worked as ChinaWhys general manager. The duo have been paraded in prison suits by state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV), which earlier aired a televised confession by an unshaven Humphrey.China originally said the couples trial would be held in secret, but the Shanghai court said last month it would hold open proceedings. In practice that has meant the delayed transcripts of the trial being posted on the microblog account, which was being shown on a screen to reporters in a separate room in the court building.

Lebanon's Hariri back as army enters restive border town

Posted:

BEIRUT (AFP) - Lebanons leading Sunni politician Saad Hariri returned from self-imposed exile Friday on a trip to bolster the countrys army after clashes with jihadists in the latest spillover from Syrias war.Hariris visit, his first since 2011, comes after open conflict between the army and jihadists on the border with Syria that has killed 17 troops and left 19 kidnapped.Hours after his arrival, a military source said troops had begun entering the restive town of Arsal for the first time since the fighting erupted a week ago.Hariri has said Saudi Arabia, one of his chief allies, had pledged $1 billion to shore up the army and security forces against jihadists. His return to Lebanon also underscores the seriousness of the clashes in the Arsal region in eastern Lebanon on the Syrian border.Fighting that began there on August 1 has eased, and a military source said Friday night that the army has started to enter Arsal, setting up a checkpoint and advancing slowly. But earlier, residents who tried to return to their homes were fired on by snipers and it remained unclear whether gunmen had withdrawn from the town.Sunni clerics have mediated a truce under which the militants agreed to return to Syria and talks are continuing over the release of 17 policemen and 19 soldiers being held hostage. The violence in Arsal is the worst in the border region since the Syrian war began in March 2011, and has raised further concerns about the effects of the conflict on Lebanon.Despite Beiruts effort to insulate itself from the war next door, the fighting has spilled over and stoked existing political and sectarian tensions in Lebanon.- Army a red line -Much of Lebanons Sunni community, including Hariri, supports the Sunni-dominated uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.But many Lebanese Shiites support Assad, and the powerful Shiite Hezbollah movement has sent fighters to bolster his troops against the uprising.Hariri, 44, has voiced unconditional support for Lebanons army in the fight against jihadists in Arsal, calling it a red line. But some of his constituents accuse the army of allowing Hezbollah free rein to fight in Syria and failing to protect Sunnis. The fighting in Arsal erupted last Saturday afternoon, when gunmen attacked soldiers after the arrest of a Syrian man accused of belonging to Al-Qaedas Syrian affiliate Al-Nusra Front. At least 17 soldiers have been killed, and 19 remain kidnapped along with 17 policemen.Dozens of militants have been killed, and field hospitals have reported at least 47 deaths, with more than 250 wounded.- Riyadh pledges $1 billion -The fighting prompted army chief General Jean Kahwaji to urge France to speed up delivery of weapons being bought under a $3 billion deal financed by Saudi Arabia. And Hariri announced on Wednesday that the kingdom had pledged $1 billion in funds to bolster the Lebanese security forces. On Friday, Hariri said his stay in Lebanon would be long, and that the visit came after the Saudi donation, which we must examine how to implement and translate in support of the army.Analysts said he would seek to rally the Sunni community around the army and bolster his standing in Lebanon, which he left in 2011 after his government collapsed when ministers from Hezbollah, his chief political rival, resigned.Hariris return can be seen as an attempt at unifying the Sunni community both around Lebanese state institutions, particularly the army, as well as around Saudi Arabia, which is now championing itself as a major counter-terrorism force in the region, said Lina Khatib, director of the Carnegie Middle East Centre.Such a rallying of Sunnis would have a stabilising effect on the country and detach the Sunni community from being attracted to the extremism presented by groups such as the Islamic State, she said.Khatib added that Hariri was also striving to regain a central political standing in Lebanon as the country looks forward to holding parliamentary and presidential elections.Hariris father, former prime minister Rafiq Hariri, was assassinated in a 2005 Beirut attack that his supporters blame on the Syrian regime and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah.

US planes start airstrikes on Iraq militants

Posted:

ARBIL (AFP) - US jets struck jihadist positions in northern Iraq on Friday, a potential turning point in a two-month crisis Washington said was threatening to result in genocide and to expose US assets.President Barack Obamas order for the first air strikes on Iraq since he put an end to US occupation in 2011 came after Islamic State (IS) militants made massive gains on the ground, seizing a dam and forcing a mass exodus of religious minorities.Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said on Twitter that US forces bombed the jihadists after artillery fire against Kurdish regional government forces defending their capital Arbil. Two US jets hit a mobile artillery piece, he said. A Kurdish official said the strikes targeted the towns of Gwer and Makhmur, southeast of the autonomous Kurdish region. The US operation began with air drops of food and water for thousands of people hiding from the Sunni extremist militants in a barren northern mountain range. Many people who have been cowering in the Sinjar mountains for five days in searing heat and with no supplies are Yazidis, a minority that follows a 4,000-year-old faith.Obama accused the IS, which calls Yazidis devil-worshippers, of attempting the systematic destruction of the entire people, which would constitute genocide. The UN said it was urgently preparing a humanitarian corridor.Panic had begun to grip Arbil after IS thrust into the Nineveh plains separating the city from the main jihadist of Mosul and Obamas decision was welcomed there. We were very nervous these past few days. Daash (Islamic State) is powerful and well-equipped, said Karwan Ahmed, 27, a taxi driver. This is good news. The Kurdish peshmerga, short of ammunition and stretched thin along a huge front, have been forced to retreat in the face of brazen assaults by the jihadists.- Captured dam -Their withdrawal from Iraqs Christian heartland on Wednesday and Thursday sparked a mass exodus and spurred Western powers into action.Obamas announcement came after an emergency UN Security Council meeting called by France, which also offered to support forces battling the jihadists and contribute to the relief effort.Chaldean Patriarch Louis Sako said Iraqs largest Christian town of Qaraqosh was emptied of its population on Thursday and estimated the number of Christians forced from their homes at 100,000.The capture of Mosul dam was another setback for the peshmerga who had been defending it and gave jihadists a power of life and death over a huge swathe of land.A Kurdish and a local official said jihadists took it over on Thursday and warned that any unscientific manipulation could have disastrous consequences.A 2007 letter to the Iraqi government based on a US assessment had warned that catastrophic failure of Mosul dam would result in flooding along the Tigris river all the way to Baghdad. While IS has weaponised dams before, Mosul dam provides water and electricity to its main stronghold and is crucial to its own state-building efforts. In Mosul, the countrys second city, identical sermons were delivered in all mosques Friday, residents said, with worshippers asked to swear obedience to the caliph, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.- Stranded Yazidis -Obama said the strikes would be limited and it remained unclear how much of a game-changer they would be on the ground.Iraqs military chief of staff told AFP he expected to see his forces and the peshmerga reclaim large tracts of land in the coming hours. He said he thought the US air strikes would extend to other towns controlled by IS but he did not say which ones. The jihadists control towns west, south and north of Baghdad. There has been daily fighting on several fronts for two months and as the conflict escalated, the US banned its civilian airliners from overflying Iraq, Britain asked its nationals in parts of Kurdistan to leave and global stock markets were unsettled.Obama came to office determined to end US military involvement in Iraq, and in his first term oversaw the withdrawal of the huge ground force deployed there since the 2003 American-led invasion. But the capture of huge swathes of land by jihadists, who in late June proclaimed a caliphate straddling Syria and Iraq, has brought a country already rife with sectarian tension closer to collapse. Many people in Baghdad were sceptical of Obamas motives. He did nothing for three years but something happened to the Kurds and the Christians and he started talking about terrorism, said Rashaad Khodhr Abbas, a retired civil servant.Where were you all this time, Obama?IS has enjoyed a spectacular run of military successes in Iraq, but the group also scored a key victory in Syria, with the capture overnight of a key army base in Raqa province.Observers say one of the main obstacles to coordinated action by all of ISs Iraqi foes is Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, accused by many of having institutionalised sectarianism in recent years. The United States, the Shiite religious leadership, powerful neighbour Iran and even much of his own party have all pulled their support but Maliki has dug his heels in.
