CGames: 'Best ever' Commonwealth Games end in Glasgow

GLASGOW (AFP) - The Glasgow Commonwealth Games were hailed as the best ever on Sunday as the 11-day showpiece came to an emotional conclusion inside a chilly Hampden Park.An event long written-off as a dusty anachronism in the modern, profit-driven era of international sport ended with England on top of the medals table for the first time since 1986 and with rich plaudits ringing in its ears. The Games have made us all very proud and truly brought our family together, said Prince Imran, president of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), during a closing ceremony which fused the pop of Kylie Minogue and poetry of Rabbie Burns.Scotland, and Glasgow, you really have delivered in every aspect the best Games ever.Prince Imran's warm endorsement echoed similar praise earlier in the day from Mike Hooper, chief executive of the CGF, who described the event as the stand-out Games in the history of the movement. With more than 4,700 athletes having competed for 261 gold medals on offer, the Commonwealth Games flag was then entrusted to officials of the 2018 Games to be hosted by Australia's Gold Coast.England started the day already assured of top spot in the medals table for the first time since 1986, dethroning Australia.By the end of Sunday's action, with just 11 more titles to be decided, England had captured 174 medals of which 58 were gold. Australia finished on a total of 137 with 49 gold.On a rain-hit final day in Glasgow, Lizzie Armitstead struck further gold for England in the women's cycling road race going one better than four years ago in New Dehli.Fellow English rider Emma Pooley finished 25 seconds behind to finish second and add to the silver she won in the time trial.I can call myself a champion finally. It's special and something I've always dreamed about, Armitstead said.I just feel like I deserve this. I've trained so hard and I'm always on the podium but I don't win too many races.Welsh rider Geraint Thomas then won gold in the gruelling men's 168km road race.Thomas, who won bronze in the time trial, survived suffering a puncture with just 6km to go to finish in a time of four hours 13 minutes and five seconds.A sprint finish saw New Zealand's Jack Bauer claim silver while Scott Thwaites took bronze for England.I'm a massive diesel engine at the moment, said Thomas, whose day got even better when it was revealed he would carry the Welsh flag in the closing ceremony later Sunday.Australia won gold in the men's hockey with a 4-0 thumping of India for a fifth consecutive Commonwealth title, and in the netball with a 58-40 revenge win over New Zealand, who beat them at the same stage four years ago.Scottish hopes of a 20th gold medal were dashed when Kirsty Gilmour lost 21-14, 21-7 to Canada's Michelle Li in the badminton women's singles final.India's Kashyap Parupalli was a popular winner in the men's singles title as he beat Derek Wong of Singapore in a three-game classic to win gold.I'm so happy, said the 27-year-old Indian. This championship means such a lot to me. These Games come every four years and that's what drove me on.English husband and wife pairing Chris and Gabrielle Adcock comfortably won the mixed doubles, Khe Wei Won equalled the Malaysian badminton gold medal record as she went level on four with Eei Hun Chun after she won the women's doubles with partner Vivian Kah Mun Hoo. Malaysia also won the men's doubles through Tan Wee Kiong and Goh Wei Shem.Australia won the two remaining titles in the squash tournament.David Palmer, 38, had come out of retirement in a bid to finally add a winning squash gold medal to his Commonwealth Games collection and he ended with two on Sunday.First Palmer teamed with Rachael Grinham to beat England's Alison Waters and Peter Barker 11-8, 11-10 in the mixed final. He then joined Cameron Pilley to deny singles champion Nick Matthew and his teammate Adrian Grant in the men's doubles, winning 11-7, 11-9.I almost ran out of gas, admitted Palmer after the Games' concluding gold medal event.

Tennis: Raonic rips Pospisil in first all-Canada final

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Wimbledon semi-finalist Milos Raonic captured his sixth ATP title Sunday at the Washington Open, defeating Vasek Pospisil 6-1, 6-4 in the tours first all-Canadian final. In his first event since producing his best Grand Slam showing, Raonic took the top prize of $316,400 (235,635 euros) from the $1.9 million (1.4m euros) hardcourt event, a warm-up for the US Open starting later this month.I couldnt have asked for a better way to lead into my most important part of the year, Raonic said. Im fortunate to have played so well at the starting stages. Its tough after a few weeks away.Raonic, who said he was far ahead of where he hoped to be in US Open preparations, had not won an ATP crown since last September at Bangkok and had not reached a final since losing to Juan Martin del Potro last October in Tokyo.Pospisil, coming off a Wimbledon mens doubles title alongside American Jack sock, played in his first ATP final after upsetting Czech top seed Tomas Berdych in the third round and playing four sets Saturday after completing a rain-halted quarter-final and beating Richard Gasquet in the semi-finals.He came out strong. He caught me off guard. He played so strong, Pospisil said. I wasnt 100 percent but it wouldnt have made much difference. In only the second ATP final between players born in the 1990s, 23-year-old Raonic ripped through the first set against 24-year-old Pospisil in just 29 minutes, breaking three times and dropping only four points on his serve.I would never imagine starting off that well and I was fortunate enough to do so, Raonic said.Raonic took the lone break of the second set in the final game, swatting a crosscourt backhand winner past his countryman to end matters after 67 minutes.I didnt think I played bad. Milos played well, Pospisil said. I didnt get much sleep last night either.Raonic, who won his only prior match with Pospisil in last years Montreal semi-finals, will match his career high of sixth in next weeks world rankings.Pospisil could have jumped past his career-high ranking of 25th with a win, but will still rise from 36th into the top 30 as both head for home soil in the ATP Toronto event. Were both very excited to go there and play in front of the home crowd, Pospisil said.Asked about their time as pre-teen rivals, Raonic said, Vasek won every time and Pospisil knew his winning score of their first meeting, 7-6, 6-4.I always knew Milos would get there when I was 15, the way he was serving and the potential he had, Pospisil said. He had his breakthrough and I was able to get mine too.In the later WTA final, 29-year-old Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, a two-time Grand Slam champion, seeks her first WTA title since 2010 at San Diego against Japans Karumi Nara.Kuznetsova, the 2004 US Open and 2009 French Open winner, had not reached a final since 2011 until earlier this year in Oerias while Nara, 22, won her first WTA title earlier this year at Rio de Janeiro and is set to surpass her career high of 38th in the rankings.

AKRON (AFP) - British Open champion Rory McIlroy outdueled Sergio Garcia to win the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday and regain the world number one ranking. In his first start since claiming his third major title at Royal Liverpool, McIlroy erased a three-shot overnight deficit, firing a final round of four-under par 66 for a 15-under total of 265 and a two-shot win over Garcia. The 25-year-old from Northern Ireland will overtake Australian Adam Scott atop the world rankings, regaining the number one spot he last held in March of 2013.Garcia closed with a one-over par 71 on the rain-softened Firestone Country Club Course for a 13-under par total of 267.His three-stroke lead was gone in the blink of an eye as McIlroy birdied the first three holes and Garcia bogeyed the third to fall one adrift.McIlroy finished with five birdies and one bogey.Garcia would pull level going into the back nine, but McIlroy took the lead for good with a birdie at 11.The Spaniard, who birdied eight of the back nine holes in a 61 on Friday, had his only birdie of the day at the ninth against two bogeys. Before the drama of the final group played out, defending champion Tiger Woods was the focus of attention as he withdrew after eight holes with back pain that puts his appearance in next week's PGA Championship in doubt. The 14-time major champion, who had back surgery in March, said he began suffering from back spasms after landing hard in a bunker after a shot at the second hole. He withdrew after eight holes to bring his third start since his surgery to an abrupt end.

Banned Aamer hopes for earlier return to game

KARACHI (AFP) - Disgraced Pakistan paceman Mohammad Aamer Sunday said he hoped to return to the game before a five-year ban ends next year if the world cricket body amends its anti-corruption code.Aamer's spot-fixing ban ends in September 2015, but Pakistani cricket officials have applied for it to be relaxed, with the matter likely to be finalised in October. It's a frustratingly lengthy wait and I am counting every day with my fingers crossed, 22-year-old Aamer told AFP.He was found guilty of spot-fixing during a Test at Lord's in 2010 with two team-mates, spent three months in a British jail and was banned in 2011 from the game by the International Cricket Council (ICC).I can't say anything before October, whether I am able to return to international cricket or be able to play in domestic matches, its all up to the ICC, said Aamer.Aamer said the Pakistan Cricket Board's taking up his case with the ICC had raised his spirits.I am thankful to the PCB for taking up my case with the ICC and that has raised my spirits, said Aamer.Whether I am able to play the World Cup (2015) or not it's not in my hands but even without me Pakistan is a strong team and have the prayers and good wishes of all the fans in the country, said Aamer. The cricket board last year requested the ICC relax some of the conditions of Aamer's ban to allow him to take part in domestic matches. That prompted the ICC to form a committee to look into the matter as it agreed to review its anti-corruption code which carries a minimum five-year ban for offenders.I have never lost hope, that's always with me, Aamer said. I train hard and will resume training in the next few days after the Ramadan break, so from my side I will be ready whenever the go-ahead comes. The left-armed paceman became the youngest player ever to take 50 Test wickets and guided Pakistan to a 1-1 series draw against Australia when the two teams played in England in June 2010.

England call up Finn to replace Plunkett

LONDON (AFP) - England on Sunday called Steven Finn into the squad for the fourth Test against India to replace injured paceman Liam Plunkett. After suffering particularly badly on Englands disastrous Ashes tour of Australia, Finn has been in good form for Middlesex this season.Yorkshires Plunkett dropped out to rest an injured ankle that will not be recovered in time for the fourth Test starting at Old Trafford on Thursday, with the five-match series level at 1-1.Liam Plunkett experienced some left ankle discomfort at the end of the second Investec Test and will miss the fourth Test as this continues to settle, the England and Wales Cricket Board said in a short statement.England hope that rest will get Plunkett ready for the fifth Test starting on August 15.Finns form in Australia was so bad that he was the only member of Englands squad not to get a match in any of the five Tests, all won by the host nation. The 6 feet 7 inch (two metre) tall Finn, 25, made his Test debut for England against Bangladesh in 2010 and has since taken 90 wickets in 23 internationals. He has taken 44 wickets so far in the county championship this summer at an average of 29.72.

Ban Ki-moon calls attack on Gaza school as 'criminal act'

Posted:

NEW YORK: (Reuters/Dunya News) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned an attack that killed 10 people at a U.N. school in the Gaza Strip on Sunday as a moral outrage and a criminal act.In his most strongly worded statement yet on an attack against a U.N. facility in Gaza, Ban called it yet another gross violation of international humanitarian law, which clearly requires protection by both parties of Palestinian civilians, U.N. staff and U.N. premises, among other civilian facilities. This attack, along with other breaches of international law, must be swiftly investigated and those responsible held accountable. It is a moral outrage and a criminal act, Ban said.A Gaza health official said at least 10 people were killed and 35 wounded after the strike near the boys' school in Rafah. Several bodies, among them children, were strewn inside the U.N. school's compound. At least one U.N. staffer was killed, said Robert Turner, the director of operations for the U.N. Palestinian refugee agency in Gaza.Turner said preliminary findings indicated the blast was an Israeli airstrike near the school. At least six U.N. facilities have been struck by Israeli fire since the conflict between Israel and Hamas began. After an attack that killed at least 16 people at a U.N. school last week, Ban said nothing is more shameful than attacking sleeping children. In Sunday's statement, Ban reiterated that Israel's military has been repeatedly informed of the location of these sites. The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the strike, which came as Israel signaled a possible scaling back in the ongoing war.The U.N. chief also expressed his frustration with the unraveling of the 72-hour ceasefire last weekend, which he had helped broker along with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.Ban spent six days in the Middle East last month and countless hours on the phone with Israeli, Palestinian and other leaders trying to broker an end to the fighting. He called on both sides to resume negotiations for a ceasefire and negotiations in Cairo to address the underlying issues.
