Tennis: Andy Murray battles into US Open second round

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - A hurting Andy Murray held on for a four-set victory over Robin Haase on Monday to reach the second round of the US Open.In steamy 30-degree heat on the Louis Armstrong Stadium, Murray defeated the 70th-ranked Dutchman 6-3, 7-6 (8/6), 1-6, 7-5.The Scot, who hasn't reached a final since lifting the Wimbledon trophy in 2013, looked to be in trouble as he staggered through the third set, and twice rallied from a break down in the fourth to finally close it out after just over three hours. The 27-year-old, who won the US Open in 2012, said he arrived at Flushing Meadows fitter than he has been for any Grand Slam of the year. But the match against Haase offered more drama than Murray would have wished for, and he was at a loss to explain his physical struggles. These Slams are physically challenging, but I need to work out why it happened, Murray told an on court interviewer. It shouldn't have happened, regardless of the temperature. In the end, however, he was safely through, gaining the decisive break in the 11th game of the fourth set then saving three break points in the following game before holding for the match. With two-time defending champion Serena Williams and five-time champion Roger Federer waiting in the wings, reigning Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic and French Open winner Maria Sharapova headlined the opening night.Top-seeded Djokovic, recently married and soon to be a father for the first time, is gunning for a fifth straight US Open finals appearance and a second title to add to the one he won in 2011.He was set for a first career meeting with Diego Schwartzman, a 22-year-old from Argentina who is playing in his second career Grand Slam and the first tour-level hardcourt tournament of his career. He definitely has nothing to lose, Djokovic said. I'm going to try to use my experience playing many matches on the center court and get a win.Sharapova, who won her fifth career Grand Slam title at Roland Garros this year, returns to Flushing Meadows after missing last year's US Open with a shoulder injury. She'll face fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko, a former top-10 player now languishing at 113th after a spate of injuries.Australian Open winner Stan Wawrinka, seeded third, was also in action, taking on Czech Jiri Vesely.Second-seeded Simona Halep, runner-up to Sharapova at Roland Garros, shook off first-match jitters to defeat unranked US wildcard Danielle Collins 6-7 (2/7), 6-1, 6-2.Fourth-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska powered past Canadian Sharon Fichman 6-1, 6-0, and sixth-seeded German Angelique Kerber defeated Russian qualifier Ksenia Pervak 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.Despite the quick work, Radwanska was pleased to have her first match out of the way.First match is always tricky, said Radwanska, who allowed her 112th-ranked opponent just three points in the second set.Radwanska has been to the quarter-finals of every Grand Slam but this one at least once, and she's determined to break through to the last eight this year.I will do everything to do that, she said. I hope (to go) even deeper, but let's focus on that first and then we will see.Halep, an eight-time winner on the WTA tour, admitted it was a bit intimidating to find herself first up for the tournament on the massive Arthur Ashe Stadium court. It's not easy to manage the situation, but I think after first set did I very well, the 22-year-old said. I played better than first set. I started a little bit nervous, but it's normal.Nick Kyrgios, who stunned Rafael Nadal in the fourth round at Wimbledon, ousted 21st-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny 7-5, 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 7-6 (7/1).The fiery young Australian found himself in hot water on the way to victory however, and was one warning away from being kicked out over unsportsmanlike outbursts.

Football: Jovetic at double as Man City sink Liverpool

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Stevan Jovetic scored twice as champions Manchester City beat last season's runners-up Liverpool 3-1 on Monday in the first major showdown of the new Premier League campaign.Mario Balotelli was in the stands to watch new employers Liverpool take on former club City after completing his 16 million pounds ($26.5 million, 20.1 million euros) move to Anfield from AC Milan, but it was another 24-year-old who took centre stage at the Etihad Stadium.Jovetic's debut campaign at City was spoilt by injury, but the Montenegro striker scored either side of half-time to send Manuel Pellegrini's side towards victory over the team they pipped to last season's title. The only point of concern for Pellegrini was an injury to striker Edin Dzeko, who hobbled off mid-way through the second period, but his replacement, Sergio Aguero, needed only 23 seconds to score City's third. When you play against a strong team you have to concentrate and our concentration and intensity was good, said Pellegrini. It's so important to get six points from our first two games as it was a very difficult start for us.Pellegrini added that Dzeko's injury appeared to be nothing important. It was a first away loss of 2014 for Brendan Rodgers's Liverpool, who replied through a Pablo Zabaleta own goal, and left City one of only four teams to have won their first two fixtures, alongside Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Swansea City.Up until they scored, we were the better side, said Rodgers. We switched off just before half-time and we gave away two poor goals, really. They worked the ball well for the second one, but the third was poor from our point of view.It is very early for this squad. As the season goes on, we will get better and better. The events of last season's run-in were clearly fresh in the minds of City's fans, who goaded visiting captain Steven Gerrard over his costly slip in Liverpool's loss to Chelsea in April by chanting: He's gonna slip in a minuteThe home supporters saw their side make the more positive start beneath steady rain at the Etihad, with Dzeko shooting wide, Zabaleta volleying over, and Yaya Toure working Simon Mignolet from 20 yards. But Liverpool withstood the pressure, and after Gerrard had seen a long-range effort deflected wide, Joe Hart had to beat away a crisp strike from England team-mate Daniel Sturridge at his near post.Left-back Alberto Moreno was enjoying his Liverpool debut following his move from Sevilla, but four minutes before half-time, his error allowed City to go ahead.David Silva was unable to make anything of a throw-in from the City right, but just as Moreno looked set to clear, Jovetic darted in, nicked the ball off his toes, and drilled a low shot past Mignolet.Sturridge had a goal ruled out for offside early in the second period, but after Moreno had alertly thwarted Dzeko and Jovetic had headed over, the hosts made it 2-0 in the 55th minute with a fine goal.Jovetic was both creator and finisher, freeing Samir Nasri with a delicate back-heel flick and then haring into the box to meet the Frenchman's low centre with an unerring left-foot finish.Rodgers reacted by introducing Serbian winger Lazar Markovic for his first appearance since a 20 million pounds switch from Benfica, but there was more woe in store for the away team.Moments after Dzeko had limped off following a fall, Aguero scampered onto an incisive 40-yard pass from fellow substitute Jesus Navas before calmly beating Mignolet at his near post.Zabaleta inadvertently kneed the ball into his own net in the 83rd minute after Hart had parried a header from Liverpool substitute Rickie Lambert, but by then the damage had been done.An injury to Glen Johnson meant that Liverpool finished the game with 10 men. Aguero threatened to add to their misery in stoppage time, but his shot hit the side-netting.

Football: Benzema, Ronaldo get Madrid off to winning start

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid got their La Liga campaign off to an unconvincing start as they beat newly promoted Cordoba 2-0 at home on Monday thanks to goals from Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo.Without the Manchester United bound Angel di Maria, Real missed the Argentine's energy in midfield but went ahead 15 minutes before half-time when Benzema rose highest to head home Toni Kroos' corner.Cordoba had their chances to equalise after the break as Iker Casillas denied Ryder Matos and Fidel, but Ronaldo sealed the game in stoppage time with a characteristic thumping finish into the bottom corner from 30 yards.La Liga champions Atletico Madrid also get the defence of their title underway later on Monday when they travel to Rayo Vallecano.Real boss Carlo Ancelotti explained his side's below par performance was down to fatigue. There was a bit of tiredness because since the 12th we have played every three days and it is not an easy time of the season to do so, Ancelotti said.We suffered a little bit, but we controlled the game. We tried to mix possession with playing a bit more direct and I think we were well-balanced.Cordoba were playing in their first top flight game for 43 years and nearly had a dream start against Real's galacticos when Mike Havenaar pulled his shor just wide from the edge of the area. The European champions slowly began to impose themselves on the visitors as the first-half wore on and Juan Carlos had to be alert to parry powerful efforts from Ronaldo and Kroos.Madrid did go in front on the half hour mark as Benzema ended his four-month goal drought at club level with a thumping header to power Kroos' corner in off the post. However, Cordoba were nearly level from a corner of their own just before half-time when Havenaar got between Casillas and the Real defence but saw his header fly just off target.Cordoba appeared to take heart from that opportunity, though, as they were the better team after the break against disjointed Madrid.Casillas was forced into his first serious save as he pounced on Matos' shot after an error from Alvaro Arbeloa.James Rodriguez struggled to recreate his stellar World Cup form on hs home league debut after a 75 million euro ($99 million, 60 million pounds) move from Monaco, but the Colombian did nearly make the game safe for Los Blancos with a fierce strike that Carlos did exceptionally well to parry to safety.Madrid were served a warning 20 minutes from time when Casillas could only parry Fidel's effort into Xisco's path, but the former Newcastle United forward's finish was rightly ruled out for offside. And despite failing to shine, Real did eventually ensure they started with a win as Ronaldo picked up the ball midway inside the Cordoba half and strode forward before unleashing a fine shot low past Carlos.

Boxing: Klitschko pulls out of title defence with injury

VIENNA (AFP) - IBF world heavyweight champion Vladimir Klitschko has pulled out of his title bout against Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev on September 6 in Hamburg with a torn bicep muscle, the Ukrainian revealed on Monday. I am really very disappointed that the fight will not go ahead as planned, said the 38-year-old, who has a record of 62 wins against just three defeats. A new date for the fight, against the 33-year-old Pulev who is undefeated in 20 bouts with 11 knockouts, has not been announced. Obviously I am disappointed for my fans, but also my opponent who has prepared as intensively as me for this fight, continued Klitschko.Medical tests revealed the tear which will prevent him from training for at least four weeks. Klitschko, who also holds the WBO and IBO belts, was hoping to pave the way for a crack at the WBC world title, relinquished by his older brother Vitali, who has opted to concentrate on his political career in Ukraine. He needed a mandatory defence of his IBF title in order to try and unify the four world championships, by potentially beating first Pulev and then Canadian Bermane Stiverne who inherited the WBC belt in May.

Badminton: Chong Wei's world title bid begins with a bang

Posted:

COPENHAGEN (AFP) - Lee Chong Wei began what is almost certainly his best chance of winning the world title with a routine win over Korean opponent Lee Dong Keun in Copenhagen on Monday. The world number one from Malaysia's 21-11, 21-12 first round win over Lee contained a higher ratio of fast airborne attacks than usual in his superbly well varied game.It is two months since Chong Wei last competed - a loss to Japan's Kenichi Tago in Indonesia - but there was no lack of match sharpness and no obvious evidence either of his persistent groin injury.Despite all this the 31-year-old legend declined to agree that this is the best chance of winning the world title that has somehow eluded him.I'll try my best, that's all, he said.I can still feel the injury, but today I was very aggressive and I was happy with my performance. The spell in which Chong-Wei surged from 3-4 down to 11-4 in the first game was a sequence of the most spectacular and penetrating attack, six of the seven points coming from smashes and the other from a piercing mid-court kill.It set the tone of the match and made his supporters dream of what might happen this week. With titleholder Lin Dan absent, and both Tago and Simon Santoso of Indonesia, withdrawing, Chong-Wei may never have a better chance. He was next due to play the winner of Kashyap Parupalli, the former Commonwealth bronze medallist from India, and Dieter Domke, a top 50 German. Good as he may feel, Chong-Wei won't look beyond that.He may be wise for two other seeds in his half also played well. Wang Zhengming, the sixth-seeded Chinese player accounted for Michal Rogalski of Poland 21-15,21-12 and could meet Chong-wei in the quarters.Later Jan Jorgensen, the dangerously improving world number three who should be at his best on home soil, outplayed Maxime Moreels of Belgium 21-15, 21-11.Two months ago the Dane won his first Super Series title and shortly before that beat Lin Dan, who has six more days as world champion. Jorgensen should meet Chong-Wei in the semisEarlier Kento Momota, the 20-year-old Japanese player who helped make badminton history at Delhi in May, suffered a dramatic reversal of fortunes when he became the first seeded player to be beaten.Momota had been a winner in his country's stunning capture of the Thomas Cup world team title, but was unable to capitalise on a lead of a game and 15-11 against Wei Nan, the Hong Kong player he had beaten in Delhi, losing 18-21, 21-18, 21-12.

Oil prices trade mixed

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for October fell 30 cents to close at $93.35 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London trade, Brent crude for October closed at $102.70, up 41 cents from Friday. The market is really indecisive today, said Robert Yawger of Mizuho Securities USA, noting relative weakness in the WTI while Brent was stronger. The rise in the dollar against other major currencies also put pressure on crude prices, Yawger said. The firming makes dollar-priced crude more expensive for buyers using weaker currencies.Tim Evans at Citi Futures said that reports of rising June oil inventories in China, the world's second-largest oil consumer after the United States, could reinforce the market's sense of oversupply.Monday's trade showed the same tolerance for geopolitical risk that has become the established norm, Evans said.Neither further conflict along the Ukrainian border, an ISIS military victory in northeastern Syria, nor escalating conflict in Libya have sparked much buying.

Euro sinks again as Germany insists on austerity

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro fell again against major currencies Monday as Germany reiterated its insistence on austerity and reform in trying to revive the eurozone economy. The euro sank below $1.32 against the dollar, falling to its lowest level since early September 2013. As recently as May it was above $1.39.The euro also dropped against the British pound and Japanese yen, as German Chancellor Angela Merkel praised Madrid's austerity drive during a visit to Spain and gave her powerful backing to the country's economy minister in his bid to lead the Eurogroup forum of eurozone finance ministers.Meanwhile France's cabinet was reshuffled amid a fight between pro-stimulus and pro-austerity politicians that had weakened the government under President Francois Hollande. Also weighing on the common currency were the comments Friday by European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi, who strongly suggested that the ECB would take more measures to fight deflation and strengthen growth.

Record-breaking Ramdin, Bravo take Windies to 338-7

Posted:

BASSETERRE (AFP) - Denesh Ramdin and Darren Bravo wrote their names in the record books with hundreds in pacing the West Indies to 338 for seven against Bangladesh in the third and final one-day international on Monday.Seeking a clean sweep of the series following victory in the first two matches in Grenada, Ramdin's blistering 169 in a 258-run third-wicket partnership with Bravo (124) dominated the home side's effort after they were put in to bat and lost both openers with just 12 runs on the board.Their stand was the highest for any wicket in ODIs for the West Indies while Ramdin's effort, highlighted by 11 sixes and eight fours off 121 balls, equalled batting legend Brian Lara for the third-highest individual innings by a West Indian in one-dayers. Only Vivian Richards, arguably the greatest of the many batting masters from the Caribbean, has higher individual scores -- 189 not out against England in Manchester in 1984 and 181 against Sri Lanka at the 1987 World Cup in Karachi.Bravo may have been overshadowed by the wicketkeeper-batsman's big hitting, but he eventually unfurled his most fluent and powerful shots, hammering eight sixes and seven fours off 127 deliveries before a tired swing at off-spinner Mahmudullah brought about his demise to a catch at backward-point.Yet Bangladesh were left to rue what could have been for their captain, Mushfiqur Rahim, missed a straightforward stumping chance off Abdur Razzak when Bravo was just on ten. Razzak himself was subsequently at fault in the field as he moved lethargically at mid-on towards a miscued swing by Ramdin, then on 35, off Mashrafe Mortaza. As in the first two ODIs in Grenada, Al-Amin Hossain impressed with the ball. He removed the dangerous but out-of-form Chris Gayle to a catch at the wicket early on and then returned to add the key wicket of Darren Sammy in the 48th over.He was even more impressive in the final over, conceding just two runs and dismissing Ramdin and Jason Holder off successive deliveries to finish with the deserved figures of four for 49, lifting his tally of wickets in the series to ten. Mahmudullah was the most economical however, delivering his ten overs at a cost of 48 runs.

Rain puts Hales's debut on hold

Posted:

BRISTOL (AFP) - Bad weather put England batsman Alex Haless one-day international debut on hold as rain washed out the series opener with India at Bristol on Monday without a ball being bowled.Hosts England were due to play world champions India in the first of a five-match series at the south-west ground but persistent overnight and early morning rain prevented play starting as scheduled at 10:30am local time (0930GMT).The latest a 20 overs per side match -- the minimum length required to declare a result -- could have started was 3:47pm (1447GMT) but with the rain showing no sign of stopping, the umpires announced the match had ended in a no-result washout ay 1:30pm (1230GMT).Hard-hitting Nottinghamshire opener Hales has appeared in 32 Twenty20s for England and scored his countrys first century in crickets shortest format against when he made 116 not out from 64 balls against Sri Lanka at the World Twenty20 in March. The 25-year, due to partner England captain Alastair Cook at the top of the order, has been tipped as the man to revive the teams often staid approach with the bat in the opening overs of a one-day game.India, the 50-over world champions, were looking to bounce back following their 3-1 defeat in the preceding Test series, a campaign that ended with England winning the final two matches by an innings.Last year, India beat England in the final of the 50-over Champions Trophy at Edgbaston, although rain reduced that match to a 20 overs per side contest. This years five-match contest marks the start of both teams lead-in to next years one-day World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.India have now put former all-rounder Ravi Shastri put in overall charge of the side, with coach Duncan Fletcher, the former England boss, retaining his position despite being criticised following the Test series defeat. The series continues with Wednesdays second one-day international in Cardiff.

US military prepares military optionsto pressurize Syria

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States ispreparing military options to pressure the Islamic State inSyria, the U.S. military said on Monday, but officials cautionedthat no decision had been made to expand U.S. action beyond thelimited air strikes underway in Iraq.President Barack Obama has so far sought a limited militarycampaign in Iraq focused on protecting American diplomats andcivilians under direct threat. Still, officials have not ruledout escalating military action against the Islamic State, whichhas increased its overt threats against the United States.General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs ofStaff, said last week that the Islamic State would need toeventually be addressed on both sides of what is essentially atthis point a non-existent border between Syria and Iraq.Dempsey's spokesman confirmed on Monday that options againstIslamic State were under review and stressed the need to form acoalition of capable regional and European partners. With Central Command, (Dempsey) is preparing options toaddress ISIS both in Iraq and Syria with a variety of militarytools including airstrikes, Colonel Ed Thomas said. The bottom line is that our forces are well postured topartner with regional allies against ISIS.Two other U.S. officials also acknowledged the preparationof strike options against the Islamic State in Syria, with onesaying planning had been underway for weeks.Still, neither official suggested U.S. military action therewas imminent. We're just not there yet, said a senior U.S. defenseofficial, speaking on condition of the anonymity.Republicans on Sunday called for more aggressive U.S. actionto defeat Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq, accusingPresident Barack Obama of policies that have failed to thwartpotential new threats on U.S. soil.Dempsey, Thomas said, believed that the Islamic State neededto be pressured in Iraq and Syria and that defeating the groupwould require a sustained effort over an extended period of timeand much more than military action.Although the U.S. air campaign launched this month hascaused some setbacks for Islamic State, they do not address thedeeper problem of sectarian warfare which the group has fueledwith its attacks on Shi'ites. In retaliation for the airstrikes, Islamic State released avideo showing one of its black-clad fighters beheading U.S.journalist James Foley.

We will not let PM become political martyr: Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan said that we will not ‎let Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif die the death of a political martyr, and he is mistaken if he thinks ‎the army will take over, he is badly mistaken.‎Khan said with assurance that Afzal Khan’s disclosure on live television has made everything crystal ‎clear, and now PM does not have any moral justification to stay in power. He added that Afzal Khan ‎divulged this information of United Nations Development Pakistan’s (UNDP) computer being turned ‎off, and that is when the actual rigging plan began.‎While addressing the participants of ‘Azadi March’, Khan stressed that workers had risen in support ‎from all corners of Pakistan including women who were bound to become liberators, as Qauid-e-Azam ‎Muhammad Ali Jinnah would have wanted it to be.‎Imran Khan remarked he had heard about these retaliatory rallies by Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N), ‎adding that these rallies were baseless because Pakistan’s predicaments were still present.‎At the same time, Khan branded former chief justice Pakistan (CJP) as a traitor for betraying the nation ‎during the elections, and said that the former CJP would be found guilty after impartial investigation.‎During the address, singer Abrarul Haq’s car’s windows were smashed in an attack by unknown ‎assailants.‎
