Three Palestinians killed in Israel attack on Gaza: medics

Posted:

GAZA CITY (AFP) - Three Palestinians were killed by an Israeli air strike on central Gaza, medical officials said Saturday, as the bloody conflict between Hamas and Israel entered its 47th day.Emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said the three were killed in a house in the Nusseirat camp, with five others wounded in the same attack.Hostilities in the six-week war between Israel and Islamist rulers of Gaza Hamas resumed on Tuesday as Egyptian-brokered truce talks collapsed. The Gaza emergency services say 79 people have died in the Palestinian enclave since then. One Israeli child was killed by a Gaza mortar on Friday with seven others wounded the same day by other rocket attacks, one of them critically. At least 2,095 Palestinians have been killed since July 8, of whom the United Nations has identified 70 percent as civilians, and 68 people have died on the Israeli side, all but four of them soldiers.

Shiite militiamen kill 70 at Iraq Sunni mosque

Posted:

BAQUBA (AFP) - Shiite militiamen gunned down 70 people in an apparent revenge attack at an Iraqi Sunni mosque Friday, as Washington declared the beheading of an American journalist a terrorist attack. The shooting in Diyala province will increase already significant anger among Iraqs Sunni Arab minority with the Shiite-led government, undermining an anti-militant drive that requires Sunni cooperation to succeed. And the White House statement on the beheading of journalist James Foley raises the stakes in its confrontation with Islamic State (IS) jihadist group, which it is targeting with air strikes in Iraq.Army and police officers said the attack on the Musab bin Omair Mosque came after Shiite militiamen were killed in clashes, while other sources said it followed a roadside bomb near one of their patrols.Doctors and the officers put the toll from the attack, in which worshippers were sprayed with machinegun fire, at 70 dead and 20 wounded. Two officers had earlier blamed IS for the attack, but the preponderance of accounts point to Shiite militiamen. The government turned to militiamen to bolster its flagging forces during the IS offensive, sparking a resurgence of groups involved in brutal sectarian killings in past years that will be difficult to dislodge.Ibrahim Aziz Ali, whose 25-year-old nephew was among those killed, told AFP he and other residents heard gunfire and rushed to the mosque, where they were fired on by snipers.Five vehicles with images of revered Shiite Imam Hussein were parked at the mosque, Ali said, adding that residents clashed with the militiamen who withdrew when the Iraqi army arrived. We found a massacre at the mosque, he said.Ali said he hoped for justice from the courts, but if it is not forthcoming, we will take our right by our hands.Iraqi premier designate Haidar al-Abadi issued a statement calling for unity and condemning the killings, which may complicate the already-contentious process of forming the countrys next government. In Washington, Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes said the beheading of Foley, which was carried out by IS and shown in a video posted online, represents a terrorist attack against our country.Rhodes also said that paying ransoms to free hostages is not the right policy, confirming Washingtons long-standing position amid claims from IS that other countries had paid to have their nationals freed. The United States began an air campaign against IS in Iraq on April 8, and has since conducted said 93 air strikes, including three against militants in the area of Mosul dam, the countrys largest, on Friday.Pentagon chiefs warned of the dangers of IS and said operations against it in Syria may be needed, as the West reeled from Foleys grisly killing. They marry ideology and a sophistication of strategic and tactical military prowess, US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel said of the barbaric militants. They are tremendously well funded. This is beyond anything we have seen.General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the group has an apocalyptic end of days strategic vision that will eventually have to be defeated. Can they be defeated without addressing that part of the organisation that resides in Syria? The answer is no, he said, when asked if the campaign against the group could go beyond Iraq.He spoke of a very long contest that could not be won by US military prowess alone, but only with regional support and that of the 20 million disenfranchised Sunnis that happen to reside between Damascus and Baghdad. He was referring to the alienation of many Sunni Arab Muslims from Iraqs government and the Alawite-dominated regime in Syria.Foleys killing has stoked Western fears that territory seized by the militants in Syria and Iraq could become a launchpad for a new round of global terror attacks. The US State Department estimates that about 12,000 foreign fighters from at least 50 countries are in Syria.

Syria war toll tops 191,000, says UN

Posted:

DAMASCUS (AFP) - The death toll from the war in Syria has topped 191,000, UN rights chief Navi Pillay said Friday, criticising international paralysis on the conflict where jihadists have established a foothold.Pillay said the 191,369 deaths recorded between March 2011 when the war broke out and April this year, was nearly double that given a year ago, and was likely an underestimate. Among the dead were 9,000 children, she said, with her spokesman stressing that up to 6,000 people were dying in Syria every month.Pillay's comments came as a monitoring group reported that at least 70 Islamic State jihadist fighters had been killed in 48 hours of clashes with Syrian army troops in the northern province of Raqa.IS military gains in Raqa and Aleppo provinces have prompted the Syrian government for the first time to launch intensive air strikes against the jihadists who have seized large swathes of territory straddling Syria and Iraq.Pillay, who Thursday chided the UN Security Council for what she called a lack of resolve in ending crises, said in a statement the dwindling global interest in Syria was scandalous.I deeply regret that, given the onset of so many other armed conflicts in this period of global destabilisation, the fighting in Syria and its dreadful impact on millions of civilians has dropped off the international radar, she said. The killers, destroyers and torturers in Syria have been empowered and emboldened by the international paralysis, added the outgoing head of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.Jihadists of the Islamic State control large swathes of territory in northern and eastern Syria, where they sow terror and carry out executions like the beheading of US journalist James Foley. The conflict erupted when security forces cracked down on protesters, sparking an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's regime that escalated into full blown civil war. Pillay said there had been serious allegations that war crimes and crimes against humanity have been committed time and time again with total impunity and complained that the deadlocked Security Council had failed to refer the case of Syria to the International Criminal Court where it clearly belongs. The United Nations last gave a death toll on the conflict in July 2013 when Secretary General Ban Ki-moon put the number killed at more than 100,000.It had stopped providing tolls because of concerns over the accuracy of the numbers supplied by a range of sources, Pillay's spokesman Rupert Colville told reporters. But after working closely with several of the groups, the rights agency again felt it was safe to report the numbers, he said, adding that between 5,000 and 6,000 people were dying in Syria every month.Nearly 9,000 children, including more than 2,000 under the age of 10, were among the dead, it added, but cautioned that victims' ages had not been recorded in over 80 percent of cases. The report did not apportion blame for the killings.

Football: Atletico Madrid win Spanish Super Cup

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Atletico Madrid gained some measure of revenge for their Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid by beating their city rivals 1-0 at the Vicente Calderon on Friday to win the Spanish Super Cup 2-1 on aggregate. The hosts made the best possible start as Mario Mandzukic volleyed home the winner from Antoine Griezmann's pass after just 90 seconds.Real boss Carlo Ancelotti had named Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench due to the effects of a hamstring injury that had seen him withdrawn from the first leg. However, even the Portuguese couldn't break down Atletico's typically well-organised defence as they held on to end Real's hopes of claiming six trophies this season. As well as leaving Ronaldo on the bench, Ancelotti also fuelled speculation over Angel di Maria's future by excluding the Argentine from his squad entirely.Real were caught out by a flying start from Atletico as Raphael Varane's misjudged header allowed his French international teammate Griezmann to feed Mandzukic to score his first goal since signing from Bayern Munich. The visitors slowly grew into the game, though, and Luka Modric was inches away from a spectacular equaliser when he volleyed just over from outside the area.James Rodriguez then began to dictate the pace of the game and he was only denied a leveller by a spectacular save from Miguel Angel Moya before the Colombian also directed a header just wide of the target.Atletico boss Diego Simeone was sent-off for protesting that right-back Juanfran hadn't been allowed back onto the field quickly enough after receiving treatment for a facial injury. And the Argentine could be in for a severe ban as he confronted the assistant referee and sarcastically applauded the decision.Rodriguez then fed Gareth Bale inside the area, but the Welshman pulled his shot disappointingly wide. However, it was Atletico who had the clearest chance to double their advantage before half-time as Raul Garcia inexplicably headed over Koke's corner from point-blank range.Ronaldo made his entrance at the break as he replaced the ineffective Toni Kroos.Garcia was inches away again at the start of the second period as this time he turned a Koke free-kick onto the underside of the bar and Iker Casillas reacted well to prevent Mandzukic forcing the ball home from close range. And Garcia was desperately unlucky again moments later as this time he fired just wide with Casillas beaten.Ronaldo made his first real impression with a thunderous effort that was well held by Moya, but Atletico were creating the greater threat and went close twice more through Koke and Griezmann.Real's miserable evening was rounded off in stoppage time as Modric was sent off for a second bookable offence when he upended Cristian Rodriguez.

Formula One: Hamilton edges Rosberg in Belgian practice

Posted:

SPA (AFP) - A relaxed Lewis Hamilton topped the times ahead of his Mercedes team-mate and championship leader Nico Rosberg in second free practice for Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix.Hamilton, who trails Rosberg by 11 points in the title race after 11 of this year's 18 races, wound up six-tenths of a second clear of the German and admitted he had enjoyed returning to the cockpit after a month away on holiday, mostly in the United States.Yes, that was fun, for sure, he said. I always love racing here and that was good. I'm sure I'm going to feel something tonight or tomorrow, but it's definitely good to get back into the car.It didn't feel so good in the morning, but it was better in the afternoon. But I feel there is some work to do for tomorrow (Saturday qualifying).Hamilton was almost a tenth of a second slower than Rosberg in opening free practice in the morning, but changes made in the set-up to his car pleased him and led to him surging to the top in the afternoon, notably on soft tyres. As so often this season, the two Mercedes men turned the session into a private affair as they continued their scrap for the world title.Earlier, Mercedes executive director Toto Wolff gave an insight into how the team had rebuilt rapport after their discord in Budapest. He said the situation, after Hamilton had ignored team requests to allow Rosberg to pass him, had needed a little bit of mediating, management, caressing, hard words...And, he added: You cannot expect it to run super-smoothly. You don't expect when your team-mate has one more stop to do that you make his life difficult. On the other hand you cannot ruin one's race by expecting him to lose a couple of hundred metres. It was a matter of the words used not the principle. We probably shouldn't have said to Nico that Lewis was going to let him through, we should have said he won't make your life difficult.Friday's session, run in mostly dry conditions at the majestic Spa circuit set in the forests of the Belgian Ardennes, was twice interrupted by red flags for accidents, but nobody was hurt. For Hamilton, 29, Sunday's 44-lap race represents a perfect opportunity to reduce or overhaul Rosberg's advantage particularly as the 29-year-old German has never qualified in the top three in seven attempts at the Belgian race.He has also never finished on the podium, while Hamilton won in 2010 and has always relished the challenge of the circuit. For both of the two duelling title contenders, there is some consolation in knowing that Mercedes have a great reliability record in Belgium where they have finished every race since 1955.Rosberg was second ahead of two-time champion Fernando Alonso of Ferrari, Felipe Massa and Jenson Button of McLaren on a rare mostly dry day at the track.Valtteri Bottas was sixth for Williams ahead of Russian rookie Daniil Kvyat of Toro Rosso, Australian Daniel Ricciardo for Red Bull, Danish rookie Jan Magnussen in the second McLaren and German Nico Hulkenberg for Force India. The session began under a heavy black cloud and produced two major 'red flag' accidents, but without anyone being injured. The first came when Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado lost control of his Lotus in the approach to Pouhon and hit the barriers heavily. He was quickly in communication with the team via radio to say he was unhurt, but his car was seriously damaged and he was out for the rest of the session.Lotus later confirmed that Maldonado was taken to the medical centre for precautionary checks and that he was OK.The second red flag came when Mexican Esteban Gutierrez spun off at Blanchimont in his Sauber.

Swimming: Peaty sets new 50m breaststroke world record

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - Great Britain's Adam Peaty set a new world record of 26.62sec in the 50m breaststroke at the European Championships before revealing he hated swimming when he was a child. The 19-year-old took 0.05sec off Cameron van der Burgh's world record from the 2009 World Championships when the performance-enhancing supersuits era was at its peak.It is a far cry from the little boy who was so scared of water he would not go in the bath or the shower. As for swimming, he admitted: I hated the pool.He overcame his fears and the last weeks have been a fairytale -- although a well-deserved one -- for the Englishman who claimed two golds and one silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. His coach Mel Marshall -- winner of world, European and Commonwealth medals -- gave him four days off after his exertions in Scotland. But Peaty texted her asking if he could return to training early in order to prepare for the Europeans. He came to Berlin where he won the 100m breaststroke and was part of the Great Britain mixed medley relay squad that set a new world record on the same evening on Friday. His world record came in the second semi-final prompting a look of disbelief from the teenager who sat on the lane rope blinking as he absorbed the information on the scoreboard. However, he knows he still has hard work to do on Saturday with the final to come.He said: I feel absolutely amazing. I had to look at that scoreboard about five times before I knew I had broken it.I haven't got any words for it. I haven't broken a world record before so I don't know how it feels.Peaty's record overshadowed the rest of the night which had provided some quality racing.Florent Manaudou became the first European this year to dip under the 48-second mark as he won the 100m freestyle, his third title of the meet.Manaudou led home a French one-two with Marseille team-mate Fabien Gilot with Italian Luca Leonardi in third. The Frenchman was fastest into the final and he led from start to finish to touch in 47.98, only the third man under the 48-second mark in 2014, with Gilot finishing in 48.36, 0.02sec ahead of Leonardi.Only world champion James Magnussen and Commonwealth silver medallist Cameron McEvoy -- both Australian -- had dipped under 48 seconds this year before Friday.Jeanette Ottesen upset Sarah Sjostrom's hopes of a third individual title when she held off the Swede in the 100m butterfly.Sjostrom had already won the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle as well as relay silver and gold. The Dane, however, was too strong, stamping herself on the race from the first stroke and she was in no mood to let go, staving off Sjostrom in a championship record of 56.51.Rikke Moeller Pedersen completed the breaststroke double by adding the 200m to the 100m title she won on Wednesday. The Dane was the clear favourite going into the final and she was 0.06sec under world record pace at the final turn before tiring in the last metres, her time of 2min 19.84sec a championship record and 0.73sec off her own mark from the world Championships last year.Great Britain's Molly Renshaw destroyed the British record for second in 2min 23.82sec with Jessica Vall Montero.Gregorio Paltrinieri confirmed his place in the elite of distance swimming after claiming his second title of the week with victory in the 800m freestyle.Paltrinieri had propelled himself into the upper echelons with victory in the 1500m freestyle on Wednesday. On Friday, he won the 800m in a championship record 7min 44.98sec, 3.51sec ahead of Pal Joensen of the Faroes Island with fellow Italian Gabriele Detti picking up his second bronze medal of the week.Italy won the mixed 4x100 freestyle relay in a European record of 3:25.02 in an event which was only introduced in 2013.

Ebola death toll rises to 1,427: WHO

Posted:

GENEVA (AFP) - The death toll from the Ebola outbreak sweeping through west African countries has risen to 1,427 out of more than 2,600 cases, the World Health Organization said Friday. The latest tally, which counts the number of victims from March when the deadly disease first reared its head to August 20, found that 77 people had succumbed to the virus on Tuesday and Wednesday. The previous death toll was 1,350.Liberia remains the worst-affected country with 624 deaths. Guinea has seen 406 people die while in Sierra Leone, 392 have succumbed to the haemorrhagic fever.Nigeria, meanwhile, had seen five people pass away by August 20.The latest outbreak of the disease, first identified in 1976 in what was then Zaire but is now DR Congo, is the worst-ever and countries affected are struggling to contain the spread.Neighbours in the region and countries further afield are growing increasingly concerned over the mounting death toll, and many have stopped flights to the Ebola zone and closed land borders.

Oil prices head lower on oversupply worries

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices retreated Friday as investors focused on the prospect of having too much oil supply amid weakening demand in the global market.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for October delivery finished trade at $93.65 a barrel, down 31 cents from Thursday's close.Brent North Sea crude for October, Europe's main futures contract, dropped 34 cents to settle at $102.29 a barrel in London trade. The market is fixating its view on the possibility of having too much oil, and demand has been adjusted down by the IEA, said Bart Melek of TD Securities. This is what has been driving the market the whole week, including today. The International Energy Agency, in its latest oil market report, lowered its forecast for crude demand in 2014 and 2015, citing slower global economic growth. The IEA cited a surprisingly steep decline in oil demand in developed economies and described the market as generally flush with supply.Commerzbank highlighted Friday the impact on the oil market of growing oil production in the United States, the world's largest crude consumer, where data is suggesting growth is modestly picking up.US oil production last month achieved its highest July level in 28 years, meaning that oil imports declined to their lowest July level in 19 years despite the increased demand, the German bank said in a research note.US oil product imports plunged to a 33-year low despite distillate demand achieving a seven-year high, illustrating the impact of increasing shale-oil production on the US market, Commerzbank said.In addition, there are also noticeable effects on the international market, however, as the oil that is no longer being imported into the US is flooding the world market instead and generating pressure on prices there.JP Morgan Securities noted that Brent was due for price pressure from refineries' seasonal maintenance cycle. With autumn refinery maintenance fast approaching, North Sea crude markets may now face an extended period of unsupportive factors that are likely to weigh on price, the US bank said in a research note. Brent is unlikely to gather speed until early October. European refineries are not aggressively buying North Sea grades; refinery maintenance is about to increase; and Libyan supplies are running ahead of expectations.

West Indies thrashes Bangladesh in 2nd ODI

Posted:

ST. GEORGE'S (AFP) - An abject batting display by Bangladesh, who were bowled out for just 70, paved the way for a crushing 177-run victory by the West Indies in the second one-day international on Friday.Replying to the home side's total of 247 for seven in a match they had to win to keep the series alive following a three-wicket defeat in the opening fixture at the same venue two days earlier, the tourists showed little resistance in being routed for 70 off 24.4 overs. The third and final match will be played next Monday in St Kitts. In capitulating to their third lowest ODI total, Bangladesh lost their last seven wickets for 13 runs in the space of eight overs.Sunil Narine and Kemar Roach combined to decimate a clearly dispirited Bangladesh side in which only opening batsman Tamim Iqbal offered any meaningful resistance in getting to 37. His was the last of three wickets to fall with the score on 57, popping up a simple catch to midwicket off Roach after Narine had effectively ended any chance the tourists had of an upset set win when he removed Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah off successive deliveries in the 16th over.Narine snared three for 13 to take the man of the match award while Roach played his part with figures of three for 19.It wasn't much different from the first match, I just tried to keep it simple and it went my way today, said the spinner.Half-centuries by Chris Gayle and Darren Bravo anchored a solid if unspectacular West Indies batting effort after they took first strike in overcast, bowler-friendly conditions.Gayle's 58 at the top of the order, which included five sixes and three fours, together with Bravo's comparatively serene 53 ensured there was to be no repetition of the embarrassing collapse in the first ODI when the West Indies crashed to 34 for five before Kieron Pollard and Denesh Ramdin successfully resurrected the effort in pursuit of a target of 218.Mashrafe Mortaza's experience proved critical for the Bangladeshis in limiting the West Indies progress when they appeared on course for a much more imposing total. The former captain bowled an immaculate line and length throughout his ten-over spell, finishing on a high when he delivered a maiden over and claimed two wickets off two balls in the 49th over to return the excellent figures of three for 39.Our bowlers did a good job again, but the batting really let us down, said a despondent Mushfiqur. Hopefully we can put up a better effort in the last match.Al-Amin Hossain, who stole the spotlight with the ball for the visitors in the first match when he claimed four wickets, enjoyed early success again with the scalp of Kirk Edwards. He returned later in the innings to add Ramdin (34) to his haul although he proved more expensive in this effort, conceding 60 runs, which included sixes by Narine and Jason Holder in the last over of the innings.Notwithstanding the competitive total, West Indies were on course for a score closer to the 300-run mark but lost momentum after the dismissal of Bravo, who fell leg-before to off-spinner Sohag Gazi in the 32nd over. Lendl Simmons struggled to get going in partnership with Ramdin, and it was only when the wicketkeeper-batsman fell that the arrival of Pollard triggered a late spike in the run-rate.Pollard smashed a six and two fours in 26 off 20 balls before playing on to Mashrafe. Simmons got to 40 but occupied 61 deliveries in doing so, his painstaking progress keeping the final total at a level which Bangladesh will feel may be within their reach depending on how well they start their reply. There were a few harsh words in the dressing room after the first match and I think the players were really up for it today, said skipper Dwayne Bravo.
