Football: Hapless Celtic bow out of Champions League

Posted:

EDINBURGH (AFP) - Legia Warsaw handed Celtic a humbling 2-0 defeat in the second leg of their Champions League third round qualifier at Murrayfield to complete a resounding 6-1 aggregate win on Wednesday. The Scottish giants, who trailed 4-1 from the first leg in Poland, had started the match hoping for a repeat of last season's feat when they secured the 3-0 home victory over Shakhter Karagandy they needed to qualify for the group stages of Europe's elite competition. However, the Hoops, who were aiming for a third successive season in the Champions League group stages, never looked like turning the tie around and saw their hopes crushed in the 36th minute when MichalZyro raced in on goal to fire Legia in front.Michael Kucharczyk then took advantage of some slack Celtic defending to add to the Parkhead club's misery in the 61st minute and send his side into the Champions League play-off stage while Celtic drop into the play-off round for the Europa League.Celtic manager Ronny Delia, in only his fourth competitive match in charge, said his side lacked the quality to qualify for the Champions League group stage.Today we lost to the better team. We started okay and tried to put them under pressure but didn't create anything, he said. Then we conceded an easy goal so then it was always going to be hard.I think the players were giving everything they could but we didn't have the quality to break them down and win the game. I have to except that's the level we're at right now and I have a big job to do.Legia boss Henning Berg, who played for Celtic's bitter rivals Rangers, said he was proud of his players performances.I am so pleased for the players that they were able to play at this level and show their qualities in a such a big game as this, said the 44-year-old Norwegian, who is enjoying a happier time as coach than a short spell he had in charge of Blackburn Rovers in 2012.I think we showed we are a good side with good potential and this is a big step forward for us as a team and a club.Delia made three changes to his side with Nir Biton, a bit-part player under predecessor Neil Lennon, handed a place in midfield and Anthony Stokes preferred to Teemu Pukki as Celtic chased the three goals they needed to progress. With such a healthy advantage from the first leg the Legia Warsaw players were content to allow Celtic plenty of possession in the opening 10 minutes until they were presented with the first real opportunity of the match.A poor defensive clearance only went as far as Ivica Vrdoljak but the midfielder, who missed two penalties in the first leg, sent his effort straight at Forster.Any lingering hopes Celtic had of pulling off a shock comeback in the tie were brutally ended by Zyro's clinical goal.A simple ball over the top caused panic in the Celtic defence and Zyro, who had tormented the Scottish champions in the first leg, brushed past Izaguirre to drill a shot in to the bottom left-hand corner.Delia replaced defender Mikel Lustig with Scottish striker Leigh Griffiths shortly after the break as he desperately sought a way back into the match. However, things were to get worse for Celtic on the hour mark when some slack defending allowed Kucharczyk to double Legia's advantage. The Polish player waltzed through the Celtic defence before rounding Forster and firing the ball into the net, much to the dismay of the home support.

Golf: Tiger practices without problems on eve of PGA

Posted:

LOUISVILLE (AFP) - Tiger Woods played a nine-hole practice round Wednesday on the eve of the PGA Championship, showing no signs of back spasms that had cast doubt on his being able to compete in the final major of the year.At the same Valhalla venue where Woods claimed the 2000 PGA Championship, he played the front nine alongside Davis Love, Harris English and Steve Stricker.I felt pretty good about how I played and the shots I hit, Woods said. My range of motion was good. My firing sequence was back to normal. If my sequencing is good then it's all good.Woods, who drew a huge crowd with every move after his playing status had been in doubt for the past two days, showed no trouble with driving distance after what looked like a typical practice session, saying he was pain free despite only putting on the back nine.I'm not in any pain. That is the good part, Woods said.I need to get more feel for how this golf course is playing. It's a totally different course than what I played in 2000. These greens are all different. There are some new things that we have to learn.Woods, whose most recent of 14 major wins came at the 2008 US Open, is scheduled to start off the 10th tee at 8:35 Thursday morning (1235 GMT) alongside two other past PGA Championship winners, fellow American Phil Mickelson and Ireland's Padraig Harrington.Just play well. That's the only thing I can control, Woods said of his goals. Try to go out there and win this event. That's all I'm focused on.Woods pulled out of Sunday's final round of the World Golf Championships event in Akron, Ohio, with a back injury. He jarred his back on the second hole at Firestone Country Club and withdrew after wincing in pain following a tee shot at the ninth hole.Woods, who underwent back surgery on March 31 to relieve a pinched nerve, said his problems Sunday were unrelated to the operation. It's not the site of the surgery. This is something totally different, Woods said.Basically, when I landed on the bunker, my sacrum went out, so pinched the nerve and hence the spasm. My physio put it back in and we've just been treating it.I still need to build strength, continue to get stronger. Just going to take more time. After going home to Florida for treatment and examination by doctors, Woods decided Tuesday afternoon to play and arrived at the course Wednesday afternoon -- his latest debut ever for a major -- showing no signs of problems bending during practice swings at the driving range or hrough his round.Woods missed the Masters and US Open while recovering from the surgery and played his first event since the operation in late June at the PGA event owned by his charity foundation, missing the cut at Congressional Country Club but expressing happiness at being able to play again, a joy the tour felt as well given the dip in US television ratings in Woods' absence. We all know how much the viewing figures fluctuate depending on whether Tiger plays or not, European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley said.Last month, Woods finished joint 69th at the British Open, marking the worst 72-hole major finish of his pro career.Woods, 38, has struggled with various knee, leg and back injuries in recent years as his body breaks down under the strain of the long drives that were his trademark over a decade of golf dominance.Playing this week is critical for Woods as he tries to qualify for the US Ryder Cup team that will face holders Europe next month at Gleneagles, Scotland.Barring a win this week, Woods will need a captain's pick from Tom Watson and Woods is not qualified for the upcoming US PGA season-ending playoffs and could face a long layoff ahead of the Cup.It's speculation what's going to happen, Watson said. I can't tell you what's going to happen with Tiger. And I said right from the beginning, if he's playing well and he's in good health, I'll pick him.Woods, chasing the all-time record of 18 majors won by Jack Nicklaus, has slid to 10th in the rankings after being overtaken for the world number one spot in May.Woods, who turns 39 in December, has missed six majors in his career. Nicklaus did not miss his sixth major until the 2001 US Open at age 61.Since the Masters began in 1934, no golfer has won more than three majors after turning 39. Nicklaus won two majors at 40 and his last at the 1986 Masters at 46.

Saudi bans brides from 4 countries: newspaper

RIYADH (AFP) - Saudi men have been banned from marrying women from three Asian and one African country as the Gulf state toughens the rules restricting marriage with foreigners, a local daily said.Marrying women from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar and Chad is no longer permissible, Makkah newspaper reported. It said the total population of these communities in Saudi Arabia has exceeded 500,000 people, citing unofficial statistics, implying that this might be the reason. The paper said the new restrictions are now stipulated in the application forms that any Saudi wishing to marry a foreign woman should present to authorities. It also cited the Mecca police chief, General Assaf al-Qurashi, confirming that the four countries have been excluded. Moreover, the formalities for marrying a foreigner have been toughened, according to Makkah.A man should be older than 25 to be able to apply for a permit to marry a foreigner. If recently divorced, he has to wait six months before applying for the licence, according to the newspaper. If married, a Saudi man wishing to take a foreign woman as a second wife, he has to present proof that his first wife has cancer, is disabled or unable to have children, it said.Saudi Arabia allows men to take up to four wives, in accord with Islamic law.Foreigners in Saudi Arabia represent around 30 percent of a population exceeding 27 million.

Lack of vitamin D linked to higher dementia risk

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Older people who do not get enough vitamin D face a much higher risk of dementia or Alzheimers disease, the largest study of its kind on the topic said Wednesday.People get vitamin D from sunlight and from oily fish like salmon, tuna or mackerel, as well as milk, eggs and cheese. It is also available in supplement form.Reporting in the journal Neurology, international researchers found that people who were severely deficient in vitamin D were more than twice as likely to develop dementia and Alzheimers disease as people who got enough. The findings were based on a study of 1,658 adults aged 65 and over, who were healthy and able to walk without assistance. The participants were followed for six years. By that point, 171 participants had developed dementia and 102 had Alzheimers disease. Those who were moderately deficient in vitamin D had a 53 percent increased risk of developing dementia of any kind. Those who were severely deficient saw their risk increase to 125 percent over those with adequate levels of vitamin D.Similar numbers were noted for Alzheimers disease: those who were moderately deficient were 69 percent more likely to develop this type of dementia, and the severely deficient were 122 percent more likely to get Alzheimers. We expected to find an association between low vitamin D levels and the risk of dementia and Alzheimers disease, but the results were surprising -- we actually found that the association was twice as strong as we anticipated, said lead author David Llewellyn at the University of Exeter Medical School.Clinical trials are now needed to establish whether eating foods such as oily fish or taking vitamin D supplements can delay or even prevent the onset of Alzheimers disease and dementia. He added that the study stops short of showing whether or not vitamin D deficiency causes dementia, only that it shows there is a link that deserves further research. Some 44 million people worldwide have dementia, a number that is expected to triple by 2050.About one billion around the globe are thought to have low vitamin D levels. The elderly can be particularly vulnerable to such a deficiency because their skin is less adept at converting sunlight into vitamin D.

Oil at six-month low despite drop in gasoline supplies

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices in New York fell again Wednesday on worries about lower demand, even after an inventory report showed a surprising drop in US gasoline supplies.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for September delivery dropped 46 cents to $96.92 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the lowest closing price since February 3.European benchmark Brent oil for September delivery dipped two cents to $104.59 a barrel in London.Analysts said they were surprised WTI finished lower after the US Energy Information Administration's weekly inventory report showed lower oil and petroleum product inventories. The report showed a 4.4 million barrel drop in gasoline stocks and a 1.8 million barrel decline in diesel inventories. Both products had been expected to show increases.Andy Lebow, a senior vice president at Jefferies Bache, said the gasoline figure in particular was bullish. But traders continued to be preoccupied by concerns about lower gasoline use once the summer driving season ends in a few weeks, he said. US oil prices have fallen six of the last seven days.Crude runs are going to continue to decline, Lebow said. Part of it is seasonal.Lebow noted the report showed a decline in demand in crude supplies to oil refineries from 16.6 million barrels a day to 16.4 million. The data also showed lower refinery utilization, another sign the oil business is beginning to shift operations in anticipation of lower gasoline use.

Dollar mixed ahead of central bank meetings

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar Wednesday dropped against the yen and the euro, but gained on the British pound ahead of central bank meetings in Britain, Japan and Europe later this week. The euro, which had dropped to its lowest level in eight months Tuesday, rallied slightly against the dollar Wednesday. While no new ECB stimulus measures are expected this time, some analysts say Thursday's European Central Bank meeting could spark more euro selling if ECB chief Mario Draghi and others hint at the need for further action. But the euro could also be primed to advance, said Joe Manimbo, senior market analyst Western Union Business Solutions. With so many in the market betting on further euro weakness, the slightest trigger, like a less dovish sounding ECB, could see the euro catch a bounce, Manimbo said.Investors will also be looking for signals from the Bank of England at Thursday's meeting. No new major policies are expected out of London either, but the tone will be important. There's a growing belief that certain members of the monetary policy committee will push and possibly even vote for earlier tightening of interest rates, said Kathy Lien, managing director at BK Asset Management.Of the three currency trades, the dollar's move Wednesday was biggest against the yen ahead of a two-day Bank of Japan meeting that kicks off Thursday. Analyst David Song of DailyFX wrote in a note last week that the commentary in Tokyo could be supportive of the yen because of growing confidence Japan will achieve its two percent inflation target. It seems as though the BoJ will once again refrain from further expanding its asset-purchase program as Governor Haruhiko Kuroda remains upbeat on the Japanese economy, Song said.

'Unselectable' Finn eyes England return

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Whether Steven Finn plays in the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford on Thursday remains to be seen, but the fact he is back in an England squad represents a minor triumph for the Middlesex fast bowler. The 6ft 7in quick has taken 90 wickets in 23 Tests at an average of under 30 but hasn't played in the five-day format since last year's Ashes opener against Australia at Trent Bridge.Although included in England's squad for the subsequent Ashes tour of Australia, Finn didn't play a single international match and was sent home early after being deemed unselectable by then one-day coach Ashley Giles after 'losing' his action. But remedial work under the guidance of Middlesex boss Angus Fraser, the former England seamer who has since joined the national selection panel, has revived Finn's career to the extent the 25-year-old has now taken 44 first-class wickets at 29.72 so far this season. An injury to Liam Plunkett led to Finn being called into England's squad for the fourth Test, with the five-match series all square at 1-1.Now there is a chance Finn will make the final XI even though that would mean England changing a winning side after their 266-run series-levelling success in Southampton -- their first victory in 11 Tests. It's just great for English cricket that Finny is getting back to his best, England captain Alastair Cook said Wednesday. He's very different to what we have got: he's a tall bowler who when he gets it right bowls at near 90mph. It's obviously been a very tough six months for him personally, so to fight through it I think he'll be a stronger bloke for it and it will bode well for his cricket.Someone whose position in the England team is certain is James Anderson.Judicial commissioner Gordon Lewis last week cleared the England paceman of breaching the International Cricket Council's code of conduct after he clashed with Ravindra Jadeja during the drawn first Test at Trent Bridge amid allegations he had pushed and abused the India all-rounder.The ICC confirmed Wednesday it would be taking no further action, leaving Anderson free to play at Old Trafford -- his Lancashire home ground. While Cook and India counterpart Mahendra Singh Dhoni had wildly differing views on Anderson's fondness for verbal abuse, the two captains were united in their admiration for the skill that has left him just 12 shy of equalling Ian Botham's England record of 383 Test wickets. He is the best English bowler I have seen by quite a considerable margin, said Cook. He's not blessed with absolutely express pace so to be able to control that ball and find a method like in Australia in 2010 where it didn't swing that much but he took his wickets under 30, using that wobble ball...he has been outstanding.Dhoni added: When we (India) came here in 2007 he didn't have much control over his inswinger. But now he is a different bowler and uses the inswinger as his strength. So overall he is a terrific bowler.

About 25,000 join Europe class action lawsuit against Facebook

Posted:

VIENNA (AFP) - An Austrian waging a battle against Facebooks privacy policies said Wednesday that 25,000 users of the social networking giant have signed on to his class action lawsuit. The suit, filed by lawyer Max Schrems, claims a symbolic 500 euros ($660) per plaintiff from Facebook for several out of a long list of alleged violations of the law, his advocacy group Europe-v-Facebook said. These include its privacy policy, Facebooks alleged participation in the US National Security Agencys PRISM snooping programme, and tracking users visits to other websites with for example the Like function.Media-savvy Schrems, who first took on Facebook several years ago as a student, filed the legal action in Vienna last week. He had to limit numbers signing on to it to 25,000 after some 7,000 signed up every day. With this number of participants we have a really excellent basis not just to complain about Facebook in Europe but actually to do something, Schrems said in a statement on his website www.europe-v-facebook.org.The suit is directed against Facebooks Ireland-based subsidiary, the US firms headquarters for its overseas operations, and was not open to users from the United States and Canada. The subsidiary has to abide by EU data protection laws, which are more stringent than those in North America. The majority of those who signed up were from Europe, with the biggest numbers from Germany, Austria and the Netherlands. Facebook had 829 million active users worldwide on average in June, according to its website.
