LAHORE (Dunya News) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in a late night press conference on Sunday accepted their defeat in the intensely contested NA-122 by-election but expressed their reservations over irregularities in voter lists claiming Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) had used government machinery for their own advantage. The PTI leaders, however, remained optimistic that their party was sure to win in the next coming elections. The press conference was conducted by PTI leaders Jehangir Tareen, Chaudhary Sarwar and PTI’s main candidate Aleem Khan.Tareen accepting PTI’s defeat during the press conference stated that PTI had pointed out the irregularities in the voter lists at each stage. He stated that his party will announce its strategy for the upcoming times after complete investigation into this matter. Tareen also stated that the reduction in the number of overall votes for PML-N was a victory for PTI and was an indication that it was sure to win the next elections.Speaking on this occasion, PTI’s candidate for the NA-122 by-election Aleem Khan stated that a three thousand margin would not have exited if the voter lists had not been alerted. Khan stated that in PML-N’s candidate and his main opponent Ayaz Sadiq had only won by a margin of three thousand votes and to ask themselves if the candidate had been PTI’s Chairman Imran Khan himself.PTI leader Chaudhary Sarwar accused PML-N of using government machinery for their own benefit during the election. Sarwar also stated that the by-election was not a defeat of Aleem Khan but a victory overall. Sarwar stated that they want to take the concept of democracy in Pakistan forward. He stated that his party was a believer of democracy and would like to strengthen it. Sarwar also stated that the day was not far when the seat of NA-122 will be with the PTI Chairman.PTI’s candidate Shoaib Siddiqui was able to secure his success in PP-147 by-election managing 31993 votes defeating his opponent PML-N’s Mohsin Latif. The previous elections of NA-122 constituency in the general elections of 2013 were declared void after PTI decried that a heavy rigging of the elections had been carried out. Investigating the claims, Election of Commission Pakistan (ECP) formed Election Tribunals which declared that the a partial or complete rigging had, in fact, taken place causing ECP to call for a re-polling in 5 of the 20 constituencies and declaring the previous successful candidates from these areas as ineligible.Ayaz Sadiq had emerged victorious in these void elections as well, securing 93362 votes while his main opponent in 2013 had been Imran Khan himself who managed a second position with 84417 votes.Khan took to the streets protesting the validity of the 2013 elections accusing PML-N as well as the Returning Officers (RO) of stuffing the ballots. The accusations led to protests in Islamabad spanning almost 4 months.

Turkey mourns 95 dead in twin Ankara blasts

Posted:

ANKARA (AFP) - Turkey woke in mourning Sunday after at least 95 people were killed by suspected suicide bombers at a peace rally of leftist and pro-Kurdish activists in Ankara, the deadliest such attack in the countrys recent history. The twin blasts, near Ankaras main train station, ratcheted up tensions ahead of Turkeys November 1 snap elections which were already soaring as the government wages an offensive on Kurdish militants.Bodies of slain demonstrators were seen strewn across the ground after the explosions, with the banners they had been holding for the Work, Peace and Democracy march lying next to them. The attack also left 246 wounded, 48 of whom are in intensive care, according to an updated toll announced by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglus office.Turkeys pro-Kurdish Peoples Democratic Party (HDP), one of the groups that called for the peace rally, put the death toll at 128 in a tweet from their official account, but this figure was not confirmed by the government.President Recep Tayyip Erdogan denounced what he called a heinous attack targeting our unity and our countrys peace.Declaring three days of mourning on Saturday, Davutoglu said there were strong signs the attack was carried out by two suicide bombers.International condemnation of the bloodshed was swift. German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed sadness and dismay over the attacks, while US President Barack Obama and Russias Vladimir Putin offered their condolences to Erdogan. There were scenes of chaos after the blasts, as ambulances raced to get to the wounded and police cordoned off the bloodstained area around the train station. We heard one huge blast and then one smaller explosion and then there was a great movement and panic. Then we saw corpses around the station, said Ahmet Onen, 52.A demonstration that was to promote peace has turned into a massacre, I dont understand this, he said, sobbing.Turkish police fired into the air to disperse demonstrators angered by the deaths of their fellow activists at the anti-government peace rally, an AFP correspondent at the scene reported. - Barbaric -Davutoglu said no one had claimed responsibility for the bombings but that groups including Islamic State (IS) jihadists, the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and the far-left Revolutionary Peoples Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) were capable of carrying out such an attack.Amateur footage filmed moments before the blasts and broadcast on NTV television showed smiling activists holding hands and dancing before suddenly falling to the ground as a huge explosion went off behind them.Reports said hundreds of people in Ankara rushed to hospitals to donate blood for the victims. The death toll surpassed that of the May 2013 twin bombings in Reyhanli on the Syrian border that killed over 50 people. With international concern growing over instability in the key NATO member, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini urged Turkey to stand united against terrorists.HDP leader Selahattin Demirtas, blamed a murderous state for the deaths. A barbaric attack has been committed, he said.Among those killed was HDP member Kubra Meltem Mollaoglu, who was standing for parliament in the upcoming polls. - PKK halts attacks -In Istanbul, some 10,000 people marched down the main central avenue to denounce the attacks.Thousands also took to the streets in solidarity in Paris, Strasbourg and Marseille in France, as well as in Zurich in Switzerland.Turkey has experienced an upsurge in unrest in recent months, which began after over 30 people were killed in the predominantly Kurdish town of Suruc on July 20 in an attack against pro-HDP activists that was blamed on IS.The outlawed PKK accused Ankara of collaborating with the jihadists and resumed attacks on the security forces after observing a two-year ceasefire.Over 140 members of the security forces have since been killed while Ankara claims to have killed more than 1,700 Kurdish militants in weeks of bombardments of PKK targets in southeast Turkey and northern Iraq. The PKK, which took up arms in 1984 demanding an independent state for Kurds, on Saturday announced it would suspend all offensive operations against Turkish forces ahead of the polls. The HDP performed strongly in the last election in June, winning 80 seats in parliament to deprive Erdogans ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) of an outright majority for the first time since it came to power in 2002.The AKP then failed to form a coalition in months of talks, prompting Erdogan -- who had been hoping for a large majority to push through reforms to boost his powers -- to call fresh polls on November 1.
