Oil prices fall on supply worries, profit-taking

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Global oil prices fell sharply Monday on worries about excessive supply and profit-taking after last weeks rally.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for November delivery tumbled $2.53 to $47.10 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, about a five percent decline.European benchmark Brent oil for November delivery shed $2.79 to $49.86 a barrel in London.Oil prices had gotten a lift early in the day from a report by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries that pointed to deeper cuts in non-OPEC oil output and said factors that have depressed crude prices are starting to show signs of alleviation. However, oil prices soon turned negative, a decline partly attributed to profit-taking after US crude prices jumped nine percent last week.Analysts also still see plenty of evidence the oil glut will persist.Tim Evans, analyst at Citi Futures, said OPEC oil output remains much above expected needs. The cartel pumped 31.57 million barrels per day in September, up 109,000 barrels a day from the previous month, according to the OPEC monthly report.OPEC oil ministers and speculative bulls alike can support market sentiment with happy talk of a market that seems to have bottomed, but we see the prospect of another 12 months of rising inventories as an ongoing downside risk for prices, Evans said.We still have a weak fundamental picture overhanging the market, said Gene McGillian, broker and analyst at Tradition Energy.

Dollar slips as Fed officials stay bearish; yuan higher

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The US dollar edged lower against the euro and other currencies Monday as two top Federal Reserve officials took cautious stances in comments on interest rate plans. The dollar slipped to $1.1363 against the euro and fell to 120.02 yen, while the euro also fell against the Japanese currency, to 136.38 yen.In a speech on Sunday Fed Vice Chair Stanley Fischer avoided predictions on when the Fed would begin to raise interest rates, leaving it possible that the first move would come next year.He expressed confidence in the US economy but noted a disappointing downturn in the jobs market and, pointing to the weak global economy, said, Considerable uncertainties also surround the outlook for economic activity. On Monday Fed board member Lael Brainard echoed that view, saying they should not take the continued strength of domestic demand growth for granted.Risk-management considerations counsel a stance of waiting to see, she told a meeting of economists in Washington. Also moving up against the dollar on Monday was the tightly-managed Chinese yuan, which pushed up 0.36 percent to 6.3238 yuan per dollar. The Chinese currency has nearly recovered half the amount it lost to the greenback in a shock devaluation move August 11.

First Test between Pakistan and England starts today

ABU DHABI (Agencies) – The first Test between Pakistan and England will start today at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The match will start at 11:00am (PST).The two teams last met in the format in 2012. Pakistan proved far too strong for their opponents on that occasion, securing a 3-0 series sweep. Two significant injuries have hampered Pakistans build-up for the current series. Azhar Ali, whose century in the second innings at Dubai in 2012 was instrumental in sealing the whitewash, had already been ruled out of the first Test with an infected toe. And now Yasir Shah, whose leg-spin has reaped 61 wickets in ten Tests, has succumbed to a back spasm after snagging his spikes in the nets. A decision on his fitness will be taken in the morning.Pakistan are undefeated in the seven Tests played at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi since its inauguration in November 2010. Of those they have won four and drawn three.Squads:Pakistan (possible): 1 Shan Masood, 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Shoaib Malik, 4 Younis Khan, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Asad Shafiq, 7 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 8 Wahab Riaz, 9 Yasir Shah/Imran Khan, 10 Zulfiqar Babar, 11 Rahat Ali.England (possible): 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Moeen Ali, 3 Ian Bell, 4 Joe Root, 5 Jonny Bairstow, 6 Ben Stokes, 7 Jos Buttler (wk), 8 Adil Rashid, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Mark Wood, 11 James Anderson.

Malik ready for first Test in five years

Posted:

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik said he was well geared up to stage a comeback in the first Test against England in Abu Dhabi starting on Tuesday -- his first match in the longer format for five years.Malik played the last of his 32 Tests in 2010, also against England, before losing his place to youngsters Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq.Malik was only added to the Pakistan squad last week as the 16th member following his excellent performances in the one-day and Twenty20 cricket, and then a door opened for him with a foot injury to Ali.Malik said he would do his best to succeed.I will try my best to maintain the performances I have given in T20s and one-day matches but Tests are different and more challenging, he told reporters. He accepted that batting at number three would be demanding.Of course, it would be challenging but that is the requirement of the team and you need to give it your best shot. Azhar has done well at number three so I will try to maintain what he has done, said Malik.Malik said he was tuned up to playing the longer format despite mostly playing in the shorter form of the game.Of course, it is challenging to play the longer forms but I have not missed any first class season and being a professional I know how to cut down that pressure, said Malik.Malik, who made his international debut in 1999, was made skipper after Pakistans disastrous World Cup campaign in 2007.But in the next two years his career nosedived and he lost his place in lineup for Test matches.Malik said that since he was dropped the Test team had been doing well and it had been tough to regain his spot. He is now determined to try and resurrect his career.Look, you cannot say that it (his revival) is complete, but I have confidence and I am hopeful that it will be like that, he said.

I fixed games for Cairns, says former team-mate

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Former New Zealand cricketer Lou Vincent told a London courtroom on Monday that he had helped to fix matches under direct orders from his captain, Chris Cairns.Speaking at Cairns perjury trial, Vincent, 36, said that Cairns persuaded him to take part in match-fixing while they were playing for the Chandigarh Lions in the Indian Cricket League in 2008.I was under direct orders from Chris Cairns to get involved in fixing, said Vincent, who claimed Cairns promised him $50,000 per game to under-perform.Former New Zealand captain Cairns, who is also accused of perverting the course of justice, denies the charges facing him.The charges relate to a libel case that Cairns, 45, brought against Lalit Modi, the founder of the Indian Premier League (IPL), in March 2012.Cairns successfully sued Modi for 1.4 million pound ($2.14 million) after being accused of match-fixing on Twitter in January 2010, but now faces allegations that he lied during the case.Vincent, now retired, said he had rejected a request from Cairns to support his civil case against Modi because to do so would have been a complete lie.Vincent said that after arriving in India he had turned down an approach to get involved in match-fixing from an Indian man who had offered him cash and the use of a prostitute. But he claimed that when he told Cairns, captain of the Chandigarh Lions, about the approach, he was told: Youre working for me now.Immediately I went to Chris Cairns and told him what had happened, Vincent said. The deal, the room, the woman and being offered the money and how I went to report what had just happened.Chris was obviously interested, then there was a pause for a short period of time. And then he turned to me, looked at me and said You did the right thing and Thats good cover. Right, youre working for me now.Vincent told the jury at Southwark Crown Court that he deliberately under-performed in four games in 2008.He said that he had been suffering from mental health problems and depression at the time and felt good to be part of a gang.According to Vincent, that gang also included former New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Tuffey and former India batsman Dinesh Mongia.Vincent said that he was not paid the money he had been promised but did not confront Cairns because he felt too intimidated. He also alleged that Cairns threatened him with a cricket bat after he messed up a proposed fix.Vincent said that he continued to fix matches after leaving the Chandigarh Lions, before confessing to the cricket authorities in 2012.A big-hitting all-rounder, Cairns played in 62 Tests for New Zealand and is one of the few players to have achieved the double of 200 wickets and 3,000 runs.He was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 2000.

Russia's Gazprom resumes gas supplies to Ukraine

Posted:

MOSCOW (AFP) - Gazprom on Monday resumed gas supplies to Ukraine after receiving prepayment of $234 million (206 million euros) from Kiev, assuaging European fears about a new energy crisis ahead of the winter heating season. The resumption of gas supplies comes as fighting in the east has largely died down, fuelling hopes that the conflict that has claimed more than 8,000 lives can be resolved.Gazprom began supplying gas to Ukraine at 10:00 am (0700 GMT) today, Gazprom chief Alexei Miller said in a statement.Moscow received $234 million of the $500 million expected from Kiev, Miller said, adding that Ukraine had requested the delivery of 114 million cubic meters per day, the maximum volume of gas that could be delivered by Gazprom.Ukraines energy ministry confirmed the resumption of natural gas supplies, adding that the $500 million put aside by state energy firm Naftogaz should be enough to purchase 2.2 billion cubic metres of gas.Moscow late last month agreed to resume gas supplies to Ukraine after offering Kiev a rebate, capping months of talks overshadowed by the crisis in eastern Ukraine and fears for Europes energy security.Russian energy minister had said that the price offered was competitive with those for the gas supplied to countries neighbouring Ukraine. In June, Ukraine had announced it was suspending all purchases of natural gas from Russia after EU-mediated talks aimed at resolving a price dispute broke down.Russia supplies around a third of Europes gas, with roughly half of it flowing via Ukraine.- God forbid severe cold - This is a resumption of cooperation, Yury Korolchuk, an analyst with the Institute of Energy Strategies in Kiev, told AFP.He said that 16 billion cubic metres of gas Ukraine currently had in its underground storage facilities were not enough to safely get through the winter.God forbid that severe cold hits us in January-February and Europe takes more (gas). This is a huge risk, he added. We need at least 19 billion cubic metres to pump into our storage facilities to ensure gas transit. The resumption of deliveries could help Kiev accumulate 17 billion cubic meters of natural gas by October 21, the absolute minimum for the security of gas transit to Europe, said analysts from VTB Capital bank. But these reserves could not be enough if the winter is harsh, they warned.End-of-year haggling over energy prices had been a familiar problem between Russia and Ukraine but ties collapsed altogether after a popular uprising in Kiev ousted Kremlin-backed leader Viktor Yanukovych last year.Kiev has been seeking to diversify its supply base away from Russia after Moscow cut gas supplies to Ukraine in 2006 and 2009, interrupting transit to Europe.Moscow hiked the price it charges Ukraine following the ouster of Yanukovych -- an event that unleashed a pro-Russian insurgency in the east of the ex-Soviet country. With Russia slipping into recession on the back of lower oil prices and Western sanctions over the insurgency in eastern Ukraine, the economy ministry said Gazprom could produce 414 billion cubic metres of gas this year, an all-time low due to weak demand, among other reasons.Last week Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said a real truce had begun in eastern Ukraine but that a long-lasting peace with pro-Kremlin insurgents would still take some time.
