Oil prices revive after battering

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices slightly rebounded Thursday as traders hunted for bargains lurking in the prior days steep fall.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in December rose 18 cents to $45.38 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Brent North Sea crude for December delivery, the global benchmark, finished at $48.08 a barrel in London, up 23 cents from Wednesdays settlement. The market posted sharp losses of about two percent Wednesday as official data showed US crude stockpiles increased much more than expected last week, adding to worries about a global glut that has depressed prices for more than a year.Offsetting that bearish news a bit were declines in US gasoline and distillate inventories. At least in the near term, the market is testing the argument that the decline in product inventories for last week was more critical than the build in crude oil, although we think much of the recovery is more technical in nature, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures. However, Evans said, rising stocks continue to confirm an ongoing physical oversupply. The market also felt pressure from a slowdown in China, which reported this week that gross domestic product grew in the third quarter at its slowest pace in more than six years.Worries about the health of the Chinese economy continue to batter commodities prices. In the US, crude stockpiles surged... and supply glut remains a concern, said Sanjeev Gupta, who heads the Asia-Pacific oil and gas practice at professional services firm EY.Gupta said a meeting between OPEC and non-OPEC oil producers on Wednesday did not produce any meaningful results as no potential production cuts were addressed. He said the market would be looking at a December 4 policy-setting meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries which is expected to provide vital clues about price development in the medium term.OPEC, which includes Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, has maintained high production levels despite the price decline, as cartel members try to hold onto market share.

Euro drops as ECB whets hopes for more stimulus

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro slumped Thursday after the European Central Bank signaled it could wield additional stimulus to fight persistent ultra-low inflation and weak growth in the eurozone. After a two-day meeting in Malta, the ECB held its key interest rate steady at a record low 0.05 percent, as expected, and took no immediate new measures. But the ECB president, Mario Draghi, said in a post-meeting news conference that the bank would review its monetary policy stance in December, raising expectations of more economic stimulus. While the European Central Bank left monetary policy unchanged today investors sold euros aggressively after the central bank sent a strong message to the market that they are not only ready and willing to increase stimulus but actively exploring ways to do so, said Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management. The euro tumbled more than two cents against the dollar, trading at $1.111 around 2100 GMT, its lowest level in more than two months.Draghi suggested the stimulus boost could include a further reduction in the banks key interest rates, already at all-time lows.Coming into this meeting, it was widely anticipated that the ECB was firm on its rate policy and would only look to ease further via extraordinary measures such as its ongoing bond-purchase program, said Christopher Vecchio, currency analyst at DailyFX.Instead, Mr. Draghi & Co. are flirting with the notion that zero interest rate policies (ZIRP) can easily become negative interest rate policies (NIRP), he said in a market note.

Waqar praises ageless centurion Misbah

Posted:

DUBAI (AFP) - Pakistans head coach Waqar Younis praised Misbah-ul-Haq who struck a brilliant hundred in the second Test against England in Dubai on Thursday, saying age is no barrier for him.The 41-year-old Pakistan Test captain smashed 102 not out to lift his team to 282-4 at the close on the opening day to build a strong platform after winning the toss and opting to bat.Misbah became the 13th oldest batsman to score a hundred over the age of 40 and the oldestof the players currently playing at international level.Asked was Misbah growing in stature with age, Waqar replied: Thats what we have been saying for the last three years now. I guess its his determination, he wants to carry on playing and I dont think age is a barrier so if you are fit and still manage the modern ways of cricket, then why not?Waqar, who played alongside Misbah between 2001 and 2004, praised the hundred as special. I think the knock he played today was a very good knock and it was a captains knock and whenever wickets fell he was the most responsible, said Waqar.Misbah anchored the innings with a 93-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Younis Khan (56) and had another unbroken fifth wicket stand of 104 with Asad Shafiq who was still at the crease on 46. On 87, Misbah smashed two consecutive sixes off spinner Moeen Ali and then reverse-swept him for two to complete his ninth Test hundred -- a style which Waqar said was not new. I think Misbah has done a few times, said Waqar of Misbahs last minute aggression. I dont really know but that is the way he plays. I think he believes in that that when you are nearer to an interval or close to end of the game people bring the fielders in and he is comfortable hitting over the top.Waqar said Misbah wants to go out on a high note.He has said before this series, said Waqar of Misbah hinting retirement at the end of this series. You never know that, this might be his last series so he wants to make the most of it, we dont know what he wants to do but, of course, the way he is batting Pakistan need him.He added: I think we had a good day although we had hiccups early on but it was good the way Misbah handeld things. He accelerated the innings when needed and when it was needed to control he did that. The first match of the three-Test series ended in a draw in Abu Dhabi last week.

West Indies spinner Warrican strikes to halt Sri Lanka

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - West Indies debutant Jomel Warrican took four wickets to bundle Sri Lanka out for 200 on day one of the second Test Thursday, raising hopes of a series-saving victory for the visitors. The 23-year-old spinner, who received his Test cap from the legendary Sir Garfield Sobers, grabbed 4 for 67 off 20 overs after Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat at the P Sara Stadium in Colombo.Warrican said he could not have asked for a better start to his Test career. He was inspired by Sobers, the 79-year-old regarded by many as the games best-ever all-rounder, who told him: You have many games to come. The newcomer was modest about his own efforts. I thought the performance was average. It could have been better, but four-for (67) is a very good start for me.Sri Lankas top scorer Milinda Siriwardana (68) said he was disappointed with the teams performance, but hoped they could dismiss the visitors for under 200 on Friday. Our spinners Rangana and Dilruwan, I am sure will bowl the West Indies out below our total, Siriwardana said.Bad light stopped play when the visitors were 17-1 off 5.2 overs in their quest for the first West Indian Test win on Sri Lankan soil. They lost Shai Hope lbw to Dhammika Prasad in the first over for just four. With Kraigg Brathwaite (four not out) was nightwatchman Devendra Bishoo on five.Warrican took the scalps of Siriwardana and tailenders Dhammika Prasad and Nuwan Pradeep, as the hosts slid from 145 for 6 at tea to be all out in just 66 overs. He also dismissed Kusal Perera for 16.Siriwardana, playing only his second Test, was caught deep on the boundary trying to hit Warrican for his third six. He struck six fours in his maiden Test 50.Rangana Herath, who was 26 not out, was the next-highest scorer. Sri Lanka won the first Test in Galle by an innings. But the hosts suffered an early collapse on Thursday, losing four wickets before lunch and another two before tea. The visitors savoured early success when Jerome Taylor had opener Kaushal Silva caught behind off the fourth ball for a duck.Umpire Rod Tucker was forced to reverse his initial decision of not out after the West Indies captain Jason Holder called for a review.Opener Dimuth Karunaratne, who scored 184 in the first Test, looked shaky from the start and was next to fall, followed by series debutant Kusal Mendis. After a fourth review, captain Angelo Mathews was also given out, caught by Kraigg Brathwaite at second slip off Holder for 14.In the afternoon session Dinesh Chandimal, whose century had helped Sri Lanka to victory in the first Test, was clean-bowled by Taylor for 25. Kusal Perera was caught and bowled by Warrican for 16.The West Indies have not found Sri Lanka a happy hunting ground since they played their first official Test on the island in 1993.Now they are next to bottom -- above only Bangladesh -- in the league table of regular Test-playing nations while Sri Lanka are one notch above them in seventh place.Sri Lanka are going through a rebuilding phase after the recent retirements of star batsmen Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. But they were still far too strong for the visitors in Galle.

McCullum looks for sportsmanship not sledging against Aussies

Posted:

CANBERRA (AFP) - New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum said Thursday he expects good spirit to prevail over spiteful sledging in next months Test series against Steve Smiths rebuilt Australian team. The Kiwi skipper has been regarded as a poster boy for good sportsmanship in the game and last month collected a spirit of cricket award for his leadership on New Zealands tour to England. His stance on on-field spite has not always been matched by an Australian team brought up on what former captain Steve Waugh called mental disintegration.Things became heated the last time the two nations met in the World Cup final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March, with wicketkeeper Brad Haddin criticised for repeated sledging.Haddin later said he did it because he felt uncomfortable with how nice the Black Caps had been for their earlier pool match in Auckland.Asked whether he thought things might change now that Haddin and some other senior Australian players had moved on, McCullum said only time would tell. Were certainly not spending any energy on it or worried about it, he said ahead of New Zealands first tour match against the Prime Ministers XI in Canberra on Friday. With Steve Smith and Darren Lehmann as coach, I think the two teams will get on well.Itll be healthy competition on the field but I think it should be played in good spirits. Our focus will be very much on our skills rather than anything.Under McCullums leadership, the Black Caps have earned praise for their fearless but fair-minded style of play in 2015 -- including their run to the final of the World Cup and a drawn Test series with England. Its better than not being the nice guys, McCullum smiled. We just go play cricket and we have a good time while were at it.Weve got a great bunch of guys that were playing with. Were out there representing our country and thats where our focus is rather than the other stuff.Following Fridays day-nighter, New Zealand will play a two-day red-ball match against a Cricket Australia XI over the weekend, before playing them again in Sydney over four days next week.New Zealand are aiming to win their first Test series in Australia since 1985, beginning in Brisbane on November 5.

Kohli trumps de Villiers as India level series

Posted:

CHENNAI (AFP) - Indias bowlers backed up a long-awaited century from Virat Kohli as the hosts defeated South Africa by 35 runs on Thursday to level the five-match one-day series 2-2.Kohli smashed 138 off 140 balls to lift India to 299-8 after Mahendra Singh Dhoni elected to bat in the must-win international at the Chidambaram stadium in Chennai. The tourists managed only 264-9 in reply despite a heroic 112 off 107 balls by skipper AB de Villiers even as the other batsmen folded in the stifling heat and humidity.Seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar claimed three wickets and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh took two to set the stage for the decisive final match at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.Dhoni said teamwork was pivotal in the crucial series-levelling game.As a team we did well, we bowled well and batted well, he said. Virat batted exceedingly well, especially the runs he got after the 35-over mark.Everyone has scored runs in the series now so thats good as we go into the last match.Kohli, who was named man of the match, lavished praise on de Villiers for fighting it out in the hot weather. It was pretty difficult out there because there wasnt much of a breeze during the day when it was so hot, said Kohli. If AB (de Villiers) starts cramping then you know how hard it is because he is one of the fittest people around.A century in a winning cause is always special, but the knock by de Villiers too was very special. I told him in the dressing room that my heart was in my mouth when he was batting. He plays unbelievable shots. Credit goes to him, he fought it out.The South African captain refused to blame the loss of the toss for the defeat. The toss did not decide our fate, he said. It was a hard-fought game on a pretty tough wicket. And I loved the way the boys fought till the end. We had a great opportunity to clinch the series, but hopefully we will take some positives to Mumbai.South Africa missed all-rounder JP Duminy and fast bowler Morne Morkel who were ruled out of the key game due to injuries.Kohli struck six boundaries and five sixes in his 23rd one-day century, the first after a gap of 13 innings since scoring the match-winning 107 against Pakistan in the World Cup match in Adelaide in February.Left-hander Suresh Raina overcame his poor run of 3, 0, 0 in the previous three matches to score 53 off 52 balls and share a fourth-wicket stand of 127 with Kohli.South Africa restricted Indias total by claiming five wickets for 33 runs after the hosts were cruising at 266-3 in the 45th over.De Villiers reached 97 with a six off Harbhajan and brought up his 22nd one-day century -- the fifth against India -- with a straight six off Amit Mishra. But he fell in the 45th over, caught behind off Kumar, with his team still needing 67 runs off the last 33 balls. De Villiers hit 10 boundaries and two sixes. The match was officiated by Indian umpires at both ends after the International Cricket Council withdrew Aleem Dar of Pakistan for the last two games in Chennai and Mumbai due to security concerns. The right-wing Shiv Sena party, known for its anti-Pakistan stand, had threatened to stop Dar from umpiring in the Mumbai match.
