Tennis: Djokovic beats Nadal in Thai exhibition match

Posted:

BANGKOK (AFP) - World number one Novak Djokovic comfortably beat his out-of-form rival Rafael Nadal on Friday at an exhibition match in the Thai capital designed to boost tourism in the junta-ruled nation. The Serb, 28, cruised through the best-of-three-set contest at Hua Mark Indoor Stadium in eastern Bangkok, winning 6-4, 6-2, in the sponsored event also broadcast live on local television. There were few long rallies in the service-dominated match, lasting just over an hour, with the Spaniard opening serve before being broken in the seventh game.Djokovic dominated, successfully serving for the first set and securing an early break in the opening game of the second.Nadal -- who ended the season without a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2004 -- failed to challenge his longstanding rival and was broken for a second time in the final set before the Serb sealed his win.The leading tennis stars spent longer in official engagements than on the court Friday, earlier meeting Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha, who seized power from an elected government as then-army chief in a military coup last May.Dressed in traditional Thai silk shirts they also signed a book of well wishing for the hospitalised Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, 87, the worlds longest-serving monarch, at the Grand Palace in Bangkoks historic quarter.Their Thai tour also included a visit to the Erawan shrine, the downtown site of the deadly August bomb attack that launched a fresh blow to the kingdoms reputation as a tourism haven after last years coup and the anti-government protests which preceded it.On Friday the Tourism Authority of Thailand released a statement saying the pair had helped to promote Thailands tourist credentials, drawing on their star power to show its business as usual in the country.Djokovic has had a stellar tennis season this year, entering the double-digits with his 10th Grand Slam title at the US Open in September, now standing just seven behind the world record of Roger Federer. While the Serb was lauded at Flushing Meadows, Nadal faced questions over his future after the 14-time major winner crashed to his earliest exit in New York in 10 years. His poor form followed earlier quarter-final exits at the Australian and French Opens and a second-round loss at Wimbledon.

I have won both my matches in straight games and I must maintain this consistency, said Ferrer.Tomorrow will be another tough game, but I will rest well and be prepared, he added. Second seed Feliciano Lopez recovered from a first game setback to overcome Canadian Vasek Pospisil 6-7 (2/7), 6-3, 6-2. Fitness and mental strength is very important in tennis, and I am thankful to be going strong at 34, said the Spaniard. I knew he (Pospisil) was tiring at the end and I was happy to win. Football: Sponsor threats must herald end for Blatter says FA chief Dyke

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Football Association chairman Greg Dyke believes Sepp Blatter will be forced to step down immediately after leading FIFA sponsors called for the resignation of the controversial world football chief. In the latest blow to scandal-hit Blatters hopes of clinging to his post, Coca-Cola, Visa and McDonalds all issued statements saying he should resign after criminal proceedings were opened against him in Switzerland this week.Blatters response was to insist that he is staying in office until February, but the action of the high-profile sponsors will crank up the pressure on him to finally walk away.Dyke, a long-time critic of Blatter, is convinced this will prove to be the end of the road for the 79-year-old.I think this is a game changer. It doesnt matter what Mr Blatter says now -- if the people who pay for FIFA want a change they will get a change, Dyke said. What is important is that it isnt just about Mr Blatter standing down -- its about making sure there is a comprehensive and effective reform programme. So for those of us who want fundamental change, this is good news.Swiss prosecutors say Blatter is the target of a probe into criminal mismanagement at FIFA, focusing on a 2005 television rights sale to the Caribbean Football Union and a payment of two million Swiss francs ($2 million, 1.8 million euros) made in 2011 to European football chief Michel Platini, the frontrunner to succeed him. Both Blatter and Platini have strongly denied any wrongdoing.News that criminal proceedings had been opened against Blatter last week sent fresh shocks through the football world, deepening the crisis that erupted in May, when the US Justice Department indicted 14 people over bribery in football deals worth more than $150 million dating back to 1991.

Golf: Rookie Mullen continues charge in Scotland

ST ANDREWS (AFP) - Jimmy Mullen continued his remarkable professional debut as the Walker Cup star retained a share of the lead on Friday at the halfway stage of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.Englishman Mullen, who won all four of his matches for Great Britain and Ireland in a record Walker Cup win over the United States at Royal Lytham last month, carded five birdies and two bogeys in a second round 69 at St Andrews.I was just out there trying to enjoy it and learn, and to be at the top of the leaderboard is, I cant really explain, said Mullen, in quotes published on the European Tour website.I know Ive played the easier of the courses. Im playing Carnoustie tomorrow (Saturday) so I knew I had to do two good rounds in the first two days to take a bit of the pressure off myself, he added. The 21-year-old was joined at the top of the leaderboard on 11-under par by compatriot Anthony Wall, who reeled off five birdies over the back nine for an eight-under round of 64.Irishman Paul Dunne, who like Mullen has also just joined the paid ranks, was part of a group of four golfers lying one stroke off the lead.Dunne, who shared the lead after 54 holes of the British Open on the Old Course in July, sank three birdies with just one dropped shot in a round of 70 that left him tied with Jamie Donaldson, Chris Stroud and Thorbjorn Olesen -- all of whom made hay on the Kingsbarns course.South Africas Garth Mulroy was one shot further back with last years US Open champion Martin Kaymer the leading name in a five-strong group three strokes off the overall pace.

RugbyU: All Blacks tested by battling Georgia

Posted:

CARDIFF (AFP) - A hat-trick of tries for Julian Savea were not enough to spare the blushes of an unimpressive All Blacks who struggled to down minnows Georgia 43-10.Although the win confirmed the All Blacks quarter-final berth with one pool game against Tonga remaining, alarm bells would be ringing in the defending champions camp.In the bruising Pool C match at Millennium Stadium they outscored Georgia seven tries to one. However, the lop-sided scoreline did a disservice to Georgia who physically matched the world champions, forcing them into elementary errors. Georgias tough tackling hero Mamuka Gorgodze got the biggest cheer of the night in the Millennium Stadium when he was named man-of-the match.Lost lineouts and scrums, passes fired into empty spaces and penalties not finding touch, showed the All Blacks were well out of tune with only one game left before the knockout stages.Captain Richie McCaw said he saw no immediate reason to worry however.I actually think we were trying a bit too hard at times rather than taking another tackle and playing through another phase. It is something we have to work on, said McCaw who came off in the second half but said the leg injury suffered was not serious. We created a lot of opportunities and were only a pass away. We dont need to panic too much, he added.Starting their top available side against a Georgia team resting many of their top players, the All Blacks were expected to win comfortably but instead only led 22-10 at half-time before adding three further tries in the second half. They were rattled by a Georgia team that had little in their armoury but bone-jarring tackles and a powerful forward pack and they used both to good advantage. Their tireless figurehead Mamuka Gorgodza caused constant trouble. McCaw, who limped off in the second half with a calf injury, had called for a big step up after rust showed against Argentinan and Namibia.Instead, he led a side beset by handling errors and wayward passes, and a pack beaten in close-quarter play. With his first touch of the ball in his comeback game after a leg fracture in his maiden Test three months ago, Waisake Naholos speed wrong-footed the Georgian defence and he raced 55 metres to score. Waisake Naholo set the game alight with a 55-metre run for the line with his first touch of the ball. But it was not a flawless performance for the try-scoring specialist in his comeback game after suffering a leg fracture in his maiden Test three months ago.Any thoughts of a stunning, runaway win were soon erased when Naholo lost the ball with his second touch and Georgia cashed in on their turnover luck.Fullback Tsuklauri toed ahead and won the race for the ball to score under the posts.Lasha Malaguradze levelled the scores with the conversion and landed a 49-metre penalty to keep Georgia in touch at 12-10 after Savea had scored the All Blacks second try. The early pace of the game appeared to be telling on Georgia and the defence cover was no where to be seen when Savea scored his second in a standard backline move from a scrum. Dane Coles secured the bonus point fourth try in the 22nd minute dotting down wide out just as Savea had done twice before him with Carter missing all three sideline conversion attempts. As the errors kept mounting, and Naholo was twice forced out in the corner, the New Zealanders went 30 minutes before they scored again. From a long build up they eventually cracked the Georgian defence with Brodie Retallick crashing over and Carter added the extras. As the Georgians faded in he closing minutes Savea and Malakai Fekitoa added two further tries with Carter landing the extras.

Rallying: Evans leads as Ogier hopes over in Corsica

Posted:

AJACCIO (AFP) - Welshman Elfyn Evans took the early lead after the rain-hampered first day of the Rally of France in Corsica on Friday as world champion Sebastien Ogiers hopes disappeared.Ford Fiesta driver Evans won the third special of the day to lead Dutchman Kevin Abbring, in a Hyundai, by 18.8sec, and Finlands Jari Matti Latvala by 22.9sec in the 11th of the 13-round world championship series.World championship leader Ogier had gotten off to a flying start in the first special -- a challenging 30km climb from Liamone beach on the west of the Mediterranean island up to Carcopino -- but the French driver suffered a puncture on the third special from Francardo to Sermano, to sit 1min 13.2sec adrift in 10th.But worse was to follow on the 74km transfer to the days overnight halt in Bastia, Ogier suffered a gear shift problem that put an end to his hopes. He failed to fix the problem and had to retire his car for the day, incurring a 10-minute penalty that dropped him to 55th overall and almost certainly out of the running for victory.Fridays second special between Casamozza and Ponte Leccia, in the north, was cancelled because of landslides caused by heavy rain which caused flooding. When I finished I didnt think I had had such a good time, admitted Evans.Im a bit surprised but we were consistent, we made no mistake, the Welshman continued. The first stage was difficult but not due to the conditions as it had dried a lot. In the last stage I had a good rhythm but when theres that much water, gravel and dirt you concentrate on staying on the road rather than attacking.Pole Robert Kubica, who had shared the first stage lead with Ogier, also slumped to fifth at 40sec as the Ford Fiesta driver admitted lacking confidence negotiating the tricky roads covered with potholes and puddles. Before his gear shift problem, Ogier explained how a sharp stone had slashed a back tyre, causing the earlier puncture.Im disappointed -- this puncture has cost us victory. It looks like it will be difficult to make up the difference. On Saturday, the competitors will cover 130km and three specials from Bastia in the north east to Porto Vecchio in the south.

Oil prices rebound after drop in US rig count

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices reversed losses Friday after a tumble in US drilling raised hopes of lower production to ease the global oversupply, outweighing a badly disappointing US jobs report.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in November delivery rose 80 cents to $45.54 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Brent North Sea crude for November, the global benchmark, closed at $48.13 a barrel in London, up 44 cents from Thursdays settlement.Oil prices had not benefited earlier from the drop in the dollar after an unexpectedly bleak US September jobs report. Typically, a weaker US currency makes dollar-priced crude oil more attractive to buyers, boosting demand. But the jobs data suggested the US economy was being impacted by the China-driven global slowdown and market volatility, adding to worries about softer oil demand growth amid the long-running glut. The market, which had been trading lower after the jobs data, reversed losses on news that explorers in the US had sharply cut back on drilling. The closely watched Baker Hughes US oil rig count fell by 26 to 614 rigs this week.We saw the oil market turn around on that news, said Andy Lipow of Lipow Oil Associates, calling it a significant decline in the production indicator. The market expects that oil production will continue to decline and as a result demand will eventually catch up with the oversupply situation. But for the months ahead, the outlook was bearish. Were going to remain under pressure for quite some time, particularly in the next six months as refiners are entering maintenance season and demand declines, Lipow said. The disappointing US jobs report only added to the uncertainty hanging over the market.Fawad Razaqzada, analyst at trading group Gain Capital, said that investors are clearly now worried about weakening economic growth. With China already struggling and growth remaining lackluster in Europe, future demand for oil may not be as strong as had been previously anticipated, he told AFP.

Dollar weathers weak US jobs report

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar initially sank Friday after an unexpectedly dismal US jobs report suggested the Federal Reserve may wait to raise interest rates until next year, but clawed back losses. The Labor Departments September report showed stalling job growth in the past two months, stagnating wages, and the participation rate falling to a 38-year low, dealing a blow to market hopes for the central banks Federal Open Market Committee to lift rates in October.Nearly all the indicators that Chair (Janet) Yellen and other FOMC participants have recently cited as important in assessing labor market conditions showed some degree of deterioration, said Bob Eisenbeis, chief monetary economist at Cumberland Advisors.Markets are now likely to downgrade any likelihood of a policy move in 2015.The euro rose above $1.13 after the report but fell to $1.1219 in late-afternoon trade.By the end of the North American session, the greenback clawed back its losses on the premise that, of the large number of Federal Reserve officials scheduled to speak next week, many will continue to throw their support behind 2015 tightening, said Kathy Lien, head of foreign exchange strategy at BK Asset Management. She noted the price action was all due to investors appetite for US dollars because eurozone wholesale inflation data had come in worse than expected.Lien said that if there were no revisions in next months job report, and if job growth remains below 200,000 in October and November, the Feds plan to lift its near-zero federal funds rate by years end would be out of the question in December.Rate hike expectations have collapsed with Fed funds futures now pricing in only 30 percent chance of tightening before the end of the year compared to a 45 percent chance before the report.

Second ODI between Pakistan and Zimbabwe today

Posted:

HARARE (Agencies) – Pakistan will take on hosts Zimbabwe in the second one-day international (ODI) at the Harare Sports Club today (Saturday). Pakistan are 1-0 up in the three-match series after beating the hosts in the first ODI by 131 runs at the same venue.Pakistan will be hoping for a better and more convincing batting performance, as their top order batsmen failed to deliver on the tour so far. Scores of 29 for 3 and 34 for 2 in the T20s, and 35 for 3 up front in the opening ODI, suggest a persistent problem. However, Pakistans bowlers have taken 26 wickets in 77 overs during their trip to Zimbabwe. In the first ODI their spinners took all 10 - just the sixth time in history that slow bowlers have managed the feat.Heading into Saturdays second ODI, Zimbabwe will be determined to avoid another blowout, but with the way Pakistan are taking advantage of the conditions in the country, its difficult to see how the hosts will come away with the win.

Pakistan's Misbah mulls retirement after England series

Posted:

LAHORE (AFP) - Pakistan Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq said on Friday he was mulling retirement after the upcoming Pakistan-England series, saying he hoped to leave the game on a high. The 41-year-old said the series against England could be my last.I havent taken a final decision, Misbah told media on the sidelines of a training camp in Lahore, adding that he was considering his options.Misbah retired from Twenty20 cricket in 2012 and left the one-day international game after Pakistans quarter-final finish in the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in March. He said he wanted to leave Test cricket with good memories.People remember your final performance, he said. The unassuming middle-order batsman will be remembered for his admirable leadership of Pakistan in the aftermath of the 2010 spot-fixing scandal which resulted in five-year bans for Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir.Last month Misbah had announced he will retire after an upcoming series against India, but the December-January contest is in serious doubt due to tensions between the arch-rivals.Pakistan take on the Ashes-winning England team in a three-Test series in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) starting in Abu Dhabi from October 13.Misbah warned the conditions in the UAE will be challenging for England. This English team has done well in the Ashes, he said. But they do not have experience of UAE conditions and that will be a big challenge for them.He refused to be drawn on the prospect of another 3-0 rout of the Lions, such as the one in the UAE under his captaincy three years ago. We have to take it match by match, session by session and once you win sessions you go towards the bigger goals. We are not thinking of 3-0, England is a top team and we have to play well and think how to tackle them. When asked if Pakistan would miss Saeed Ajmal -- one of the architects of the 2012 rout with 24 wickets -- Misbah said Pakistan have replacements in leg-spinner Yasir Shah and left-armer Zulfiqar Babar.Shah and Babar are doing extraordinarily well and thats a big plus, so they havent made us feel anyones absence, said Misbah.Ajmal was not selected for the series after he struggled with a remodelled bowling action required to overcome suspension. He was suspended for illegal action by the International Cricket Council last year.

Inzamam appointed Afghanistan coach

Posted:

KARACHI (AFP) - Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq was Friday appointed temporary Afghanistan cricket coach for their upcoming Zimbabwe tour, saying he was thrilled to be taking on a team whose rise has been the games Cinderella story.Inzamam accepted a 25-day role to coach Afghanistan on their tour of Zimbabwe, where they play five one-day internationals and two Twenty20s starting from October 16.I have accepted the role of Afghanistan team coach only for the tour of Zimbabwe, Inzamam told AFP. It will be exciting and I would love to put their enormous passion on the right track. Most of the Afghan players learned the game in refugee camps on the Pakistan border after Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979. They burst on to the cricket world stage in 2009, graduating from Division Five to Division One in the International Cricket Council programme.Since then they have featured in three World Twenty20 tournaments, and earlier this year made their maiden appearance in the 50-over World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand. They also won a silver medal in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. However they hit a speedbump in August this year, when the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) decided not to extend their English coach Andy Moles one-year tenure, admitting communication between Moles and the team had been a challenge. Most Afghan players speak Urdu, however, and before Inzamam, former Pakistan players Kabir Khan and Rashid Latif also had stints as Afghanistan coach.Inzamam said the ACB had been pursuing him for two years. They offered me the role of head coach and had been after me for the last two years, and now they have asked me to help them for the Zimbabwe series, which I have agreed, said Inzamam, whose batting expertise should boost the wayward Afghan team. They are aggressive and passionate which could be both good and bad, if it is not controlled, so I will try to teach them that control and how to use their passion in the right manner.

England's Cook, Bayliss ready for Pakistan challenge

Posted:

DUBAI (AFP) - England captain Alastair Cook and coach Trevor Bayliss were confident Friday that their squad, fresh from their Ashes triumph, was ready to face Pakistan in a three-match Test series starting later this month.Cooks men face not only an unabated charge from rival spinners, but also searing temperatures and unfamiliar conditions in the United Arab Emirates -- a boost for the Pakistan team, who have been playing their home matches in the UAE since 2009 due to security concerns at home.Cook said his maturing team was ready for the challenge just two months after beating Australia to regain the Ashes 3-2 -- albeit in familiar conditions. We have got a young and exciting side and we are very clear in our mind how hard it is going to be and what a challenge it is, said Cook after the teams first training session. He said his players will have to adapt to the conditions quickly. It is warm, something we have to get accustomed to, so the first two training sessions tend to be hard work. Thats part of the conditions weve got to face. Pakistan are probably a bit more used to it than we are, but well be fine. Just a bit of sweat, blood and tears for the first bit.Cook said grabbing the opportunities will be the key to success.Last series we probably should have won it, he said of Englands 3-0 rout by Pakistan in 2012. We had opportunities to win that series but Pakistan hung in and really won the critical moments. That can be the way in sub-continent conditions or UAE conditions, the game can turn very quickly and you have to make sure you grab those opportunities, said Cook, one of five survivors of the 2012 squad. Then England were outdone by off-spinner Saeed Ajmal and left-armer Abdul Rehman. Neither were selected this time.Ajmal was suspended last year over an illegal bowling action. He was cleared in February this year after remodelling his action but has since lost bite. The duo was replaced by leg-spinner Yasir Shah and left-armer Zulfiqar Babar, both who helped Pakistan to a 2-0 win over Australia in UAE last year and 2-1 over Sri Lanka this year. Cook admitted Pakistan are still a force to be reckoned with.Shah had an outstanding start to his Test career, Cook said of the leggie who took a record 24 wickets in Sri Lanka.Obviously Saeed was a great bowler as well, he said, but added he did not think his loss weakens or strengthens them anyway.Bayliss, who took over as England coach before the Ashes, sees the Pakistan series as a bigger challenge, but said even his inexperienced players are up to it. We have got some young inexperienced players but they are players with a lot of ability and lot of skill, said the former Australian assistant and Sri Lankan head coach.I can see some useful enthusiasm and they are born with some skills so there is no reason why we cant play some good cricket and if we play some good cricket we will be hard to beat. The second Test will be in Dubai (October 22-26) and the third in Sharjah (November 1-5). The Tests will be followed by four one-day and three Twenty20 internationals.

Relieved Amir shows form with seven-for

Posted:

KARACHI (AFP) - Returning paceman Mohammad Amir took seven wickets in an innings of a domestic match in Multan on Friday, saying he is overjoyed with his progress after being relieved of a spot-fixing ban.The 23-year left-arm paceman is playing domestic matches as part of his rehabilitation under the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after a five-year ban ended earlier this month.Along with Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif he was banned in a 2010 spot-fixing scandal which rocked the cricket world. The trio were charged for orchestrating deliberate no-balls in return for money in the Lords Test against England. They were also jailed by a UK court.Playing for Sui Southern Gas Corporation in the qualifying round (a non first class match), Amir finished with 7-61 to complete a ten-wicket haul in the match against State Bank of Pakistan. That took his tally to 17 wickets in two matches after he finished with seven in the first game.I am enjoying my bowling and am satisfied with my progress, Amir told AFP from Multan by phone. I am feeling better day by day.Amir said he was very much focused on domestic matches and was not thinking of returning to international game soon.My focus is on domestic matches and I want my team to qualify for the main rounds, said Amir, whose team will qualify for the main rounds of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy -- Pakistans premier first-class tournament -- if they win the next game starting in two days.International cricket is not on my mind yet and once I attain that full rhythm then only I will make my future plans, said Amir.Amir was regarded as the hottest property in the game at the time of his ban by none other than the legendary Pakistan paceman Imran Khan.PCB earlier this month said all three players have to complete a comprehensive rehabilitation programme before getting closer to selection in the national team. The programme includes social and charity work and lectures to young players on how to avoid the pitfalls of corruption in cricket.Amir will visit a SOS village in Multan and will play cricket with young children on Saturday.
