Football: Dortmund trim Bayern's lead with win at Bremen

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - Second-placed Borussia Dortmund cut the gap behind German league leaders Bayern Munich to five points on Saturday as Marco Reus netted twice in their 3-1 win at Werder Bremen.Reus fired in the opening and third goals, but Borussia should have won by more as Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang squandered three clear chances.Right winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan capped a superb display with Dortmunds second having provided the final pass for both of Reus goals. As the second-placed team, you always look at what the top side is doing, but Bayern are still a long way ahead and were just worrying about ourselves, said Reus.We didnt have the right tempo in the first-half. In the end things turned out well, but it was harder than it looked. After Bayern were held to a goalless draw at Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday, Dortmund took the chance to trim the Bavarian giants lead. They have now scored 18 goals in their last four games and a staggering 64 in 20 games this season under new coach Thomas Tuchel.Dortmund opened the scoring after nine minutes when Mkhitaryan fired in a cross, Aubameyang let the ball roll to Reus, who fired home at the far post.Bremen levelled when Nigeria striker Anthony Ujah tapped home on 32 minutes after Matthias Ginter cleared off the line.A superb cross off the offside of the boot from Mats Hummels found Mkhitaryan at the far post just before the break to head home on 44 minutes.Reus added a third after Mkhitaryans final pass split the defence as the defeat left Bremen 14th in the table.Wolfsburg climbed to third with a 2-1 win at home to fellow Champions League side Bayer Leverkusen with goals by Nikolas Bendtner and Julian Draxler.Ex-Manchester United striker Javi Hernandez equalised for Leverkusen, but the game was marred by two poor refereeing decisions from Manuel Grafe. The FIFA-listed ref missed a clear offside for Bendtners goal, then failed to award a penalty when Wolfsburgs Daniel Caligiuri was clearly fouled by Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno in the second half.Borussia Moenchengladbach earned their sixth straight victory to go fifth with a 4-1 win at Hertha Berlin having been bottom in September with five defeats.Gladbach blitzed Hertha with two goals in as many first-half minutes at Berlins Olympic Stadium from left-back Oscar Wendt, plus a solo effort from Brazil striker Raffael.Gladbach grabbed a third when Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka drilled home a penalty on 55 minutes after Ivory Coast winger Ibrahima Traore was fouled in the area.Alexander Baumjohann converted a late penalty for Hertha after being fouled before Havard Nordtveit grabbed Gladbachs fourth in added time. The result boosts Gladbach ahead of Tuesdays Champions League match at home to 2015 finalists Juventus while Hertha drop to sixth.Gladbach are now just two points behind Schalke, who needed a late Leroy Sane equaliser in their 1-1 draw at home to Ingolstadt after the Bavarian visitors took a shock first-half lead.Bochum-born Cameroon internationals Joel and Marvin Matip faced each other for the first time with Joel at centre-back for Schalke while Marvin captained Ingolstadt.Huub Stevens picked up a point in his first game as coach of Hoffenheim in their goalless draw at Cologne.Caretaker coach Stevens has been tasked with keeping second-from-bottom Hoffenheim in order for 28-year-old Julian Nagelsmann to make history next season as the Bundesligas youngest head coach.Japan striker Yoshinori Muto claimed a hat-trick to rescue a dramatic point for mid-table Mainz in their 3-3 draw at bottom side Augsburg.Having given Mainz a 2-0 lead before Augsburg roared back with three unanswered goals, Muto saved his best for last with a 93rd-minute strike.

Football: Suarez, Neymar keep Barca on track, Madrid ease past Las Palmas

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelona kept pace with Real Madrid at the top of La Liga as Luis Suarez and Neymar once again compensated for the absence of Lionel Messi with a goal apiece in a 2-0 win at Getafe.Madrid were comfortable 3-1 winners over Las Palmas earlier on Saturday thanks to goals from Isco, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jese Rodriguez.Neymar and Suarez have now combined for Barcas last 14 league goals since Messi went down with knee ligament damage over a month ago. However, it was Sergi Roberto who shone brightest for Barca as his stunning backheel assist freed Suarez for the opener before also crossing for Neymar to volley home the second to cap off a rapid counter-attack.Barca should have been in front inside the two minutes, but Munir El Haddadis year-long wait for a goal continued as his overhead kick from point blank range somehow flew wide of the target after good work by Neymar.On-loan Celtic striker Stefan Scepovic had Getafes best opportunity of the game 10 minutes later, but he scuffed his shot wide with just Claudio Bravo to beat and with that went Getafes chance of causing an upset.Barcas dominance in possession was rewarded with a brilliantly crafted opening goal as Roberto flicked Neymars cross perfectly into Suarezs path and the Uruguayan kept his cool to register his 300th career goal for club and country.Roberto was at the heart of the second goal just before the hour mark too as Bravo collected a corner and bowled the ball out for the midfielder, who carried it forward before picking out Neymar and the Brazilian fired a volley in at the near post.Madrid also enjoyed an easy afternoon despite missing a host of star names against La Liga newcomers Las Palmas.Real were without Keylor Navas, Sergio Ramos, James Rodriguez, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema through injury as coach Rafael Benitez preferred not to risk any of his stars ahead of Paris Saint-Germains visit in the Champions League on Tuesday. However, they suffered another injury scare as Luka Modric was replaced at half-time with a hip problem putting his participation in midweek in doubt. The Canary Islanders were making their first visit to the Santiago Bernabeu in 13 years, but couldnt have gotten off to a worst start as Isco and Cristiano Ronaldo put Madrid 2-0 up inside 15 minutes.Hernans header briefly gave the visitors hope seven minutes before half-time, yet Madrid restored their two-goal advantage just five minutes later through Jese Rodriguezs fine finish. We played very well again in the first-half. We started the game sensationally well and then maybe with the advantage our tempo dropped in the second-half, said Madrid boss Rafael Benitez. But we controlled the game in the second-half thanks to our good play in the first.Elsewhere, Villarreal leapfrogged Celta Vigo into fourth with their first win in four league games as goals either side of half-time from Mario Gaspar and Cedric Bakambu saw of Sevilla 2-1.Fernando Llorente reduced the arrears 14 minutes from time, but defeat sees Sevilla slip eight points off the top four ahead of their clash with Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday.Valencia moved up to sixth as three second-half goals handed them bragging rights against local rivals Levante.Paco Alcacer opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Sofiane Feghouli and Zakaria Bakkali sealed the three points.

Palestinians clash with Israel soldiers at Hebron funerals

Posted:

HEBRON (AFP) - Violence broke out Saturday in the flashpoint West Bank city of Hebron as Palestinians buried five teenagers killed in a wave of attacks and clashes with Israeli forces. The funerals came as Israeli border guards shot dead a Palestinian at a checkpoint between the West Bank and Israel after he allegedly tried to stab one of them, police said. The surge of unrest since early October has triggered fears of a third Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation by a generation gripped by despair and anger over stalled peace efforts.Nine Israelis, 66 Palestinians and an Arab Israeli have been killed since the violence erupted in Jerusalem a month ago.The violence has spread to the West Bank, with daily protests and attacks on Israeli soldiers, and to the Gaza Strip, where there have been clashes with Israeli forces along the enclaves borders.Thousands of Palestinian mourners attended the funerals of the teenagers, two of whom were girls, in the southern West Bank city of Hebron, a powder-keg in the decades-old Palestinian-Israeli conflict. They waved Palestinian flags and chanted we will die but Palestine will live on.Clashes broke out between stone throwers and Israeli soldiers as the funerals began, and Palestinian medical sources said Israeli fire wounded 12 Palestinians. One Palestinian was buried separately in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem.Israel has been withholding the bodies of suspected assailants as part of measures to dissuade attacks on Jews. On Friday, it said it had released seven bodies, apparently to ease tensions.Families of young people killed in the violence have clamoured for their bodies to be released and accuse authorities of collective punishment.Ziad Natsheh, who buried his son Tareq, 17, said as he received condolences Saturday that he was relieved to give him a dignified burial.Hotbed for unrestLiving in a country where there is nothing else but war, everyone expects to know death, injury or lose a child, said Natsheh. Many attackers who have targeted Israeli forces come from Hebron, a stronghold of the Islamist movement Hamas.Hebron, home to a shrine known to Jews as Cave of the Patriarchs and to Muslims as the Ibrahimi Mosque, has 200,000 Palestinian residents. But the presence of 500 Israeli settlers near the city centre, living behind barbed wire and watchtowers, with an army-patrolled buffer zone, has kept tensions high.On Friday, dozens of protesters outside the shrine condemned restrictions on access imposed by Israel, which has divided it into a mosque and a synagogue.Media reported that more army checkpoints were being set up in Hebron at access points to Jewish areas, with Palestinians aged 15 to 25 not allowed to pass.Amnesty International has urged Israeli authorities to protect Palestinians in Hebron from attacks by Israeli settlers, which the rights group says have escalated in less than a month.Clinton at Rabin rallyHundreds of Palestinians also attended the funeral of another victim of the West Bank violence, eight-month-old Ramadan Thawabteh.Palestinian officials said he was asphyxiated by tear gas fired by Israeli soldiers near his Bethlehem home Friday.Israel denied any link, with the army saying tear gas was used dozens of metres (yards) away from the Thawabteh residence, and no riot dispersal means were directed at it.Simmering tensions boiled over in September regarding the status of the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem, holy to both Muslims and Jews, before escalating from October 1.Palestinians accuse Israel of seeking to change the rules governing the compound, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted he will not alter a status quo that forbids Jews from praying there. On Friday, the Palestinians also urged the International Criminal Court to accelerate its probe into accusations of Israeli war crimes, handing over a 52-page dossier alleging summary killings and collective punishment.Later Saturday, former US president Bill Clinton addressed a rally attended by tens of thousands in Tel Aviv in memory of Yitzhak Rabin, the Israeli premier assassinated 20 years ago by a right-wing Jewish extremist. He urged Israelis to decide that Yitzhak Rabin was right, that you have to share your future with your neighbours, that you have to stand for peace, that the risks of peace are not so severe as the risks of not making peace.

Shock, denial at Russia airport after plane crashes in Egypt

Posted:

SAINT PETERSBURG (AFP) - Irina Semyonova said her friend Natasha last called her from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to say shed bought her a present of perfume from the airports duty-free shop. She was vacationing there with a friend, Semyonova said blankly, showing a picture on her phone of a smiling swimsuit-clad young woman, her blonde hair in a long plait.Semyonova was one of a crowd of people gathered in Pulkovo airport in Saint Petersburg, Russias second-largest city, who were left reeling after news broke that the plane they had been waiting for had crashed shortly after takeoff in Egypts Sinai Peninsula.Like many Russians, Semyonovas friend had gone on holiday to one of Egypts Red Sea resorts which are especially popular during the winter when people try and escape the long months of cold and dark in search of warmer climes. Many of those who came to pick up friends or relatives were in denial as reports trickled in about the fate of the 224 people on board the Airbus 321 operated by the Russian carrier Kogalymavia.Airport officials tried to keep things calm with a tannoy announcement asking all those waiting to meet those on board the ill-fated Sharm el-Sheikh flight to come to the information stand. They were then ushered onto buses and taken to a hotel where psychologists and doctors were waiting at an impromptu crisis centre which has already asked family members to provide DNA samples for identifying remains. My wife was on that plane, said Nail, a grief-stricken 60-year-old with tears in his eyes. She was on vacation with our children but thank God, the children had come back two days earlier.I had a bad dream today, she was in it, he said. At 6:00 am she sent me a text message that she was going to the airport, and that was it.Ill keep hopingConfusion and fear also gripped passengers who had been due to fly out to Egypt on holiday as their plane, operated by Kogalymavia but chartered by a Moscow-based tour operator Brisco, failed to show up.Nobody came out to talk to us yet, we dont know what plane well be on, a passenger called Anzhelika told the Rossiya-24 channel. If its Kogalymavia, we dont want to fly, she said. After not answering its phones for much of the day, Metrojet broke its silence with a statement offering condolences to the families of the victims. It named the pilot as Nemov Valery and said he had more than 12,000 hours of flight experience, including 3,860 hours with Airbus A321.Metrojet said it had opened a phone line to answer the relatives questions. We will all need great courage to overcome these losses, it added.Russian investigators searched the companys offices and those of the tour operator and took samples of the kerosene used by the airline, the countrys powerful Investigative Committee said. But Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov said it was too early to speak of safety violations.Russia has a dismal air safety record, with charter flights often under pressure to book to capacity on ageing jets in a bid to cut costs. Kogalymavia is a small regional carrier which flies mostly international charter services.Regional airlines in Russia are especially notorious and the crash is likely to raise renewed concerns about the safety of air travel in a country where experts have long sounded the alarm over the nations ageing fleet of passenger jets. Two years ago, Russian lawmakers called for a ban on planes built more than 20 years ago after a 23-year-old Boeing 737 operated by a regional airline crashed, killing all 50 people on board.Russia has already announced a probe into possible safety violations in Saturdays crash and a high-level delegation of rescue workers and investigators, including two ministers, was set to travel to the crash site. The Kremlin declared a day of national mourning for Sunday.I am meeting my parents, said 25-year-old Ella Smirnova, a tall young woman with a shock-induced smile on her face, waiting by Pulkovos information stand.I spoke to them last on the phone when they were already on the plane, and then I heard the news.I will keep hoping until the end that they are alive, but perhaps I will never see them again, she told AFP.Shortly afterwards, the Russian embassy in Egypt issued a statement saying there were no survivors.
