Tennis: Djokovic, Murray make quick starts in Shanghai

Posted:

SHANGHAI (AFP) - World number one Novak Djokovic extended his hot streak in China as he blazed past Martin Klizan at the Shanghai Masters on Wednesday with Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka snapping at his heels. The two-time champion brushed Klizan aside 6-2, 6-1 to set up a clash with Feliciano Lopez or Dominic Thiem as he seeks to add to this years haul of eight titles, including three of the four Grand Slams. The Serb lifted the China Open trophy for the sixth time on Sunday and he said a surge of confidence after what he calls his best season yet made him very tough to beat.Considering the fact that Ive won so many matches this year and tournaments, probably the best season of my life definitely, anywhere I go Im confident, said Djokovic, after raising his win-loss record to 69-5 this year.Especially towards the end of the season, knowing that back in the previous years Ive played consistently well and was very successful in the last couple months of the season. That encourages me, gives me incentive to go out on the court and play the best that I can. As I said, many matches won on this court as well helps me to be more comfortable starting the match and playing in it, as well.Murray, another two-time winner at Shanghais Qi Zhong Stadium, also zipped past Steve Johnson 6-2, 6-4 and French Open champion Wawrinka beat Viktor Troicki 7-6 (7/3), 6-3.After Roger Federers shock loss to 70th-ranked Albert Ramos-Vinolas late on Tuesday, there were no banana-skins for Djokovic, Wawrinka or Murray, who was returning to action following a four-week break.Outspoken Australian Nick Kyrgios flirted with a 28-day ban after he was slapped with his second code violation in as many matches during his 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 loss to Japans Kei Nishikori. But Australian number one Bernard Tomic reached the third round when he beat David Ferrer 6-4, 6-2 -- denting the Spaniards hopes of reaching the World Tour Finals in London.Federer complained that he found it tough to adapt to the Shanghai conditions after the defending champion went out to Ramos-Vinolas, but Murray said he had arrived early enough to acclimatise.I think its not so much that the conditions are really tricky here, its that theyre quite different to Beijing and Tokyo. All of the players say that, said the 2010 and 2011 champion. It does take a bit of time to get used to the conditions here. But for me, that was a big positive in getting here early this year, that Ive had five days to get used to it.Kyrgios was again at the centre of controversy when he received a code violation for smacking away a loose ball and nearly hitting a line judge -- a day after he was fined $1,500 for an audible obscenity. If the 20-year-old totals $5,000 in fines by February 24 he will trigger the 28-day suspended ban he received in August for making a sexual comment about Stan Wawrinkas girlfriend. But Kyrgios, who sparred with umpire Mohamed Lahyani in yet another combustible display, insisted he wasnt concerned about a potential ban, even with the Australian Open looming in January. Not concerned at all. If it happens, it happens, shrugged the world number 32, adding: I probably shouldnt have done it. But I didnt think it was too bad. I dont know, cant really change it now.

Tennis: Nadal wins thriller as Karlovic ace machine jams

SHANGHAI (AFP) - Rafael Nadal needed all his trademark grit and determination on Wednesday when he was taken to a third-set tie-break by towering ace king Ivo Karlovic in a dramatic opening match at the Shanghai Masters. After Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray safely went through, Nadal was in danger of following Roger Federer to the exit when the 6ft 11ins (2.11m) Croatian zipped 24 aces past the 14-time Grand Slam winner. But Karlovic, who has fired more aces than any other player in tennis history, fatally double-faulted at 4-4 in the tense final-set tie-breaker, giving Nadal a shot at victory which he did not miss.Nadals excited reaction to the breathless 7-5, 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/4) win, when he leapt in the air and pumped his fists, and then stood with his arms aloft, left no doubt about how much the victory meant. The Spaniard had earlier whalloped three return winners in a row, from Karlovics giant serve, at 4-5 down in the first set to break the Croatian and ultimately take a one-set lead. That game was so important -- probably one of the best games return in my career, said Nadal. Yeah, almost a miracle. Three winners from his first serve. That was really amazing.Defending champion Federer tamely succumbed to 70th-ranked Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Tuesday but Nadals win means the other big names march on at Shanghais Qi Zhong Stadium.Top-ranked Djokovic, fresh from his sixth China Open victory in Beijing, breezed past Martin Klizan 6-2, 6-1 as he seeks his ninth title of a year in which he won three of the four Grand Slams.Considering the fact that Ive won so many matches this year and tournaments, probably the best season of my life definitely, anywhere I go Im confident, said the Serb, who moves to 69-5 this season.Murray, another two-time winner in Shanghai, zipped past Steve Johnson 6-2, 6-4, and French Open champion Stan Wawrinka beat Viktor Troicki 7-6 (7/3), 6-3.Federer complained that he found it tough to adapt to the Shanghai conditions after he went out to Ramos-Vinolas, but Murray said he had arrived early enough to acclimatise. It does take a bit of time to get used to the conditions here. Boxing: Ireland's Conlan makes history winning gold

Posted:

DOHA (AFP) - Michael Conlan survived a last minute knockdown to create boxing history on Wednesday night, becoming the first Irishman to win an AIBA World Boxing Championship title.Conlan, 23, said it was the first time he had ever been knocked down in his life but he still clung on to claim the bantamweight title (56kg) at the championships in Doha. The Belfast boxer, already the European and Commonwealth champion, won a brawling encounter against Uzbekistans Murodjon Akhmadaliev. The pair went toe-to-toe but Conlan had moved narrowly ahead on points by the time they entered the final round. In desperation, the Uzbek threw a big right hook in the final minute which connected with Conlans chin to send the Irishman sprawling.Clearly shaken, Conlan held on for the final few seconds to win his countrys first ever gold. Bizarrely, the judges gave Conlan the final round, which was harsh on Akhmadaliev.Im a world champion Theres not much more I can say to be honest. Im a bit speechless, he said afterwards.I have never been put down in my life, head shot or body shot. But sweet on the chin and I was down, but its a testament to my fitness, you know, he said.Conan, cheered on by a large number of Irish fans in the packed Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiyah Arena in the Qatari capital, also became a father for the first time this year and said he was desperate to get home to see his baby daughter. He prepared for the fight by watching the Sylvester Stallone boxing classic, Rocky II on Tuesday and joked afterwards that he identified with the films star, who says in the movie that winning a boxing title was the best day of his life after his baby being born. Also on Wednesday, a new star of Cuban boxing was born when the baby-faced Joahnys Argilagos took gold, aged just 18.The stylish teenager danced, bobbed and weaved his way to the title in the light-flyweight division (46-49kg), and, like Conlan, even overcame being knocked down in the final round.Argilagos said afterwards that he had prepared well for the tournament and wanted more medals. Now I am the world champion, I want to win gold in Rio, he said about next years Olympics.Argilagos, nicknamed the small giant, did just enough in the first two rounds to take the title, the first gold medal of the tournament. He outsmarted Russias Vasili Egorov and was cruising to the title before near disaster struck in the third, when he was floored by a right and received a count of eight. But the judges decided the title was still his.It was one of two gold medals Cuba took on Wednesday night with Arlen Lopez winning in the Middleweight (75kg) division. But Erislandy Savon missed out at heavyweight (91kg), losing somewhat surprisingly to Russias Evgeny Tishchenko.Russia also won gold at light-welterweight (64kg) with Vitaly Dunaytsev beating Uzbekistans Fazliddin Gaibnazarov. The remaining five finals will be fought on Thursday.

Oil prices edge lower amid poor China, US economic data

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices edged lower Wednesday, extending losses a third day, with markets still concerned about signs of global economic weakness.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in November finished off two cents at $46.64 per barrel.Brent North Sea crude for November dipped nine cents to $49.15 in London.Weak Chinese trade data for September combined with a negative turn for wholesale prices and poor consumer spending data in the US added to the picture of a slowing global economy overall, analysts said.We continue to struggle with the economic data, this morning it was fairly negative, said John Kilduff of Again Capital.Underpinning the bearish sentiment was the International Energy Agency forecast Tuesday, which expected much slower demand growth next year.A projected marked slowdown in demand growth next year and the anticipated arrival of additional Iranian barrels -- should international sanctions be eased -- are likely to keep the market oversupplied through 2016, the Paris-based IEA said.Meanwhile US crude inventories are expected to rise in Thursdays report.A Bloomberg News survey showed stockpiles are expected to have increased by 2.58 million barrels in the week to October 9. A rise suggests weaker demand in the United States, the worlds top oil-consuming nation. For now the glut on the ground, in terms of fuels, refined products and crude oil, is a bit much for the market to be able to support, said Kilduff.

Poor US retail sales hammer dollar

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Unexpectedly poor US retail sales data hammered the dollar Wednesday as traders viewed prospects weakening for a Federal Reserve interest rate increase this year. The Commerce Department reported retail sales rose a mere 0.1 percent in September, half the increase expected by analysts, and revised down Augusts reading to zero percent from a 0.2 percent rise previously reported.Stripping out sales of autos and gasoline, there was no growth in retail sales last month.Investors sold US dollars aggressively after this mornings abysmal US retail sales report, said Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management. The dollar was broadly lower against other major currencies. The greenback fell to 118.88 yen from 119.72 late Tuesday, while the euro rose to $1.1469 from $1.1381.Adding to the weak data was the Labor Departments inflation report that showed producer prices fell 0.5 percent in September, the sharpest drop since January. With inflation falling and consumer spending stagnating, it will be very difficult for the Federal Reserve to pull the trigger this year, Lien said of any rate increase. The Fed has held its benchmark federal funds rate near zero since late 2008 to help support the economys recovery from the worst recession since the 1930s.Lien said the economy could regain momentum in November or December but it would have to be a significant step-up to alter market expectations of a hike. The decline in the dollar reflects the growing belief that the first rate hike will be in 2016 and not 2015. Fed fund futures are now pricing in 29 percent chance of a rate rise in December versus 35 percent before the retail sales report, she said.

Karunaratne makes West Indies toil in first Test

Posted:

GALLE (AFP) - Opener Dimuth Karunaratne scored his third Test century and made the West Indies bowlers toil in sweltering conditions as Sri Lanka finished on 250 for two at stumps on the opening day of the first Test Wednesday.Karunaratne was unbeaten on 135 along with Dinesh Chandimal who has so far made 72 in an unbroken stand of 149 at the Galle International Stadium on Sri Lankas south coast.Playing in his 22nd Test match, Karunaratne laid the foundations for a formidable first innings score for the hosts on a pitch which is expected to favour spin in the latter stages of the game.He said his determination to stay at the crease paid off and his sessions with new coach Jerome Jayaratne had helped him to get his runs.Usually I would have got out before a century, but this time I addressed those issues with the new coach (Jayaratne), Karunaratne said. I put in a lot of effort and it paid off.I hope my score will help us to put on a big total and mount pressure on the Windies.Karunaratne was steady throughout the day although he began to play more expansively in the closing session. He reached his century in spectacular style by lofting Devendra Bishoo over mid-wicket for his only six of the day.He has also hit 10 fours after facing a total of 288 balls. After Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews won the toss and chose to bat, Karunaratne vindicated that decision by putting on 56 for the first wicket with Kaushal Silva while frustrating the West Indies fast bowlers for 17 overs.Silva, who was tested by some probing fast bowling from Jerome Taylor and Kemar Roach in the first hour, fell before lunch when he edged to Denesh Ramdin off Roach for 17.Vice captain Lahiru Thirmanne was next to go when he mistimed a lofted shot over mid wicket to be snapped up by the substitute fielder Rajendra Chandrika off Bishoo. His dismissal continued a run poor form and he never looked comfortable during his 62-ball innings, hitting just one boundary in his score of 16.Windies coach Eldine Baptist said his bowlers had performed brilliantly, but were let down by poor fielding. They put their hard work in. They bowled brilliantly... there were a few catches we would have like to have caught. That would have made a big difference, Baptiste said.He said Sri Lanka would have been 225 for 5 if not for the dropped catches. So we got to just go recover, come back tomorrow and get the ball in the same area and hopefully make sure we take all catches. As the cliche goes, catches win matches. We have to bounce back, he said.No one is meant to drop a catch. It was hard going for the West Indies bowlers who frequently teased the batsman outside off stump.Jerome Taylor was particularly unlucky to go wicketless and the visitors fielding wilted under pressure as the humid day progressed.Thirimanne and Chandimal were both dropped, the latter when he was only on 11 as Taylor failed to hang on while backpedaling near the boundary.West Indies used seven bowlers with the spinners Marlon Samuels and Bishoo bowling 40 overs between the two of them.

Stokes backs Rashid after record Test battering

Posted:

ABU DHABI (AFP) - England seamer Ben Stokes Wednesday threw his support behind team-mate Adil Rashid who recorded the worst innings figures on debut in all Test cricket, insisting the leg-spinner will come good next time.Rashid went for 163 runs in his 34 wicket-less overs as Pakistan piled up 523-8 declared on the second day of the first Test in Abu Dhabi. At close, England had made 56-0, trailing by 467 runs. For Pakistan, Shoaib Malik hit a career-best 245 while Asad Shafiq made 107 as Englands bowlers toiled under hot conditions.Stokes, who claimed 4-57 to spark a mini-collapse in the post-tea session, sympathised with Rashid who was selected for the tour with spin tracks in mind.It hasnt gone the way he would have wanted it to, said Stokes of Rashid whose figures were worse than Australian leg-spinner Bryce McGains 0-149 in his debut Test against South Africa at Cape Town in 2009.Weve been here for two weeks and know how well Rashids been bowling in practice. Next time he has the ball in hand hopefully he can deliver something big, said Stokes. He doesnt seem to get down too much, or get too high. Ive played a bit of one-day cricket with him and when hes done well he hasnt got outside of his box or celebrated over the top. I think hes a pretty level-headed cricketer, and I think hell be able to put this behind him.Besides Rashid, off-spinner Moeen Ali also failed to claim a wicket in his 30 overs, conceding 121 runs.I think its just to do with how good subcontinent players are against spin. We arent looking into that deeply at all. It could have been the other way around, they could have got the eight wickets instead of the seamers, said Stokes. It was very tough day and a half. Thats the longest I have ever spent in the field, 40 degrees doesnt help either but all the bowlers stuck at their task very, very well without getting much from the pitch or in the air.So we just had to plug away and not get bored. But credit to Pakistan, they played very well.Stokes said skipper Alastair Cook (39 not out) and Ali (15 not out) did well to negotiate 21 overs before close. The two batsmen gave themselves time to get in. They didnt really look to change gears, they just knew they needed to go big because they know the pitch will deteriorate and that the first innings will be big. Cooky and Mo have set the tone for the next two days of batting, so to come off after what could have been a dodgy 25 overs, none down, is a great effort.

Dhoni inspires India to series-levelling win

Posted:

INDORE (AFP) - Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni led from the front as the hosts fought back to stun South Africa by 22 runs in the second one-day international in Indore on Wednesday.India, restricted to 247-9 after electing to take first strike in good batting conditions, hit back to bowl South Africa out for 225 and level the five-match series 1-1.A relentless display of pace and spin bowling by the tourists had reduced India to 124-6 before Dhoni smashed an unbeaten 92 off 86 balls to help the hosts recover to a more respectable total.Dhoni added 41 for the seventh wicket with Bhuvneshwar Kumar (14) and 56 for the eighth with Harbhajan Singh (22).The skipper finished with four sixes, including one off the final delivery from young paceman Kagiso Rabada, and seven boundaries.Dhoni then marshalled his limited resources astutely as left-arm spinner Axar Patel and seamer Kumar grabbed three wickets each and Virat Kohli took three good catches to fashion the unexpected win.Having lost the opening encounter in Kanpur by five runs, India go into Sundays third international in Rajkot on level terms and looking increasingly confident.Dhoni, who was named man of the match, took a swipe at critics who had demanded that he be sacked as captain after recent losses in limited-overs cricket. It was not an easy game to play, he said. A lot of people wait with open swords and want you to make mistakes.Overall, it was not a very convincing win. We can play a lot better than this. Were not playing to our potential, not even 80 percent, either in batting or in bowling. We should have got more runs on the board, but our spinners did well upfront and the seamers too joined the action.South Africas captain AB de Villiers complimented India for the victory, but said his team had batted poorly.Credit to India, they pulled it off across the line, he said. The target was manageable, but it was a poor batting performance from us. We had a good start but could not keep that going. You have to stay positive whatever the total you are chasing. We could not execute the chase well.Faf du Plessis was the lone batsman to shine for the tourists with 51 as the rest of the batting succumbed under the pressure applied by Dhonis men under lights. The Proteas were sailing along at a comfortable 134-2, following a 82-run stand between du Plessis and JP Duminy, when India bounced back with three wickets in the space of 15 deliveries.Patel trapped Duminy leg-before for 36 and had du Plessis offering a catch to Kohli in the covers, before Kumar forced David Miller to edge his first delivery to Dhoni behind the stumps.Kohli then dived to his left in the covers to pick up a superb catch that removed danger man de Villiers for 19 and made South Africa 167-6 in the 33rd over.Farhaan Behardien (18) and Rabada (19 not out) attempted to pull South Africa out of trouble, but India held their nerves in front of a sell-out crowd of 27,000 home fans.Earlier, fiery pace spearhead Dale Steyn claimed 3-49 and fellow fast bowler Morne Morkel and leg-spinner Imran Tahir chipped in with two wickets each to restrict the Indian batsmen.Ajinkya Rahane was the only other batsman besides Dhoni to shine with 51.South Africa had won the preceding Twenty20 series 2-0. The one-dayers will be followed by four Test matches.

PM Nawaz Sharif recorded statement to FIA in Asghar Khan Case: Ch Nisar

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday recorded his statement to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in Asghar Khan Case informed Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar. According to the statement, Sharif says he has never met former Mehran Bank President Younis Habib and that the allegations of receiving any financial aid are completely baseless as no evidence was found. Sharif strongly denied the accusations that he had taken money from the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to prevent Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) from winning the polls of the general elections in 1990.The Federal Minister for Interior informed of the development during a press conference in Islamabad.Nisar stated that the investigation into the case was moving forward. He stated that the complete details of the case will be brought before the court. Nisar also stated that the statements of other people involved in the case are being recorded as well.A case was filed by the Retired Air Marshal alleging that countrys intelligence agency had provided Rs. 140 million to the politicians in the 1990s to form the Islami Jamhoori Itehad (IJT) in order to prevent PPP from winning the polls of the 1990 general elections. The case has been shrouded in complexities as many former army officers including former ISI Chief General (Retd) Aslam Baig and PM Nawaz Sharif were involved.Hearing of the case was started in 1996 by the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan. A detalied judgement was reached in November 2012 by 3 member bench of SC comprising then Cheif Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary, Justice Jawad S Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain. The decision stated that action should be taken against those involved. The detailed order also stated that the late president Ghulam Ishaq Khan, former army chief General (r) Aslam Beg, and ISI ex-DG General (r) Asad Durrani, acted in violation of the Constitution by helping politicians to secure their success against their opponents in the elections of 1990 for which they received funds from Younis Habib. In light of this decision, a team of FIA had investigated the case under the supervision of then FIA Additional Director General Galib Ali Bandesha, but the inquiry was never completed as the PPP regime during that time lost interest as FIAs development of the case remained slow.Investigation into the case again picked up in April 2015 with FIA Director General Akbar Khan Hoti forming a joint investigation team (JIT) under the supervision of FIA Additional Director General Khalid Qureshi including FIA Punjab Director Dr Usman Anwer and some other senior directors of FIA as members of the team. The JIT was formed on the orders of Nisar calling the team to finalize the case and speed up the process of the caseDuring earlier investigation, FIA had also recorded the statements of Air Marshal (Retd) Asghar Khan, former ISI DG Lt-Gen (Retd) Asad Durrani, former banker Younis Habib and former Zonal Chief of HBL Younus Memon.

The project’s termination and financial irregularities were highlighted by Dunya News after which Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif handed over the commercial audit of the project to the international audit firm Ferguson. The report is still to be submitted; however the Minister for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali ordered the removal of Mehmood and issued the notification of Bhatti as the new MD.Mehmood while talking to Dunya News stated that the removal from designation before the investigation was complete is an unconstitutional move and he was given no prior notification of such an act. Mehmood also stated that he was being pressurized to hand in his resignation.Captain (Retd) Muhammad Mehmood, a grade 19 officer of Pakistan Horticulture Authority (PHA) was appointed as the MD of the project earlier. The project, however, halted after the second day of completion. The government only rose from its slumber after the issue of Nandipur Project was highlighted by Dunya News and the truth exposed during the show “Dunya Kamran Khan Kay Sath” revealing how a Rs. 22 billion project started during the government of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was completed at a cost of Rs. 84 billion during the time of the present Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) government.Work began on the Nandipur Power Project, a 425 MW combined cycle thermal plant, back in 2008 when the Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) signed a contract with the Chinese Dong Fang Electric Corporation. However the project suffered due to mismanagement and work was halted in September 2012. The project was restarted by the current government in 2013 with an escalated price tag on the project blamed on the shortcomings of the previous government. PM Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the first turbine of the plant on 31st May 2014 however work came to a grinding halt again as the project was once again plagued by mismanagement and suffered technical negligence such as use of inappropriate fuel. The project was once again started in July 2015 but financial mismanagement, technical difficulties, negligence and lack of any checks and balance system have been its constant companion causing the project to take a heavy toll on finances.
