Pavlyuchenkova beats Friedsam in Linz final for 8th title

LINZ (AP) — Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova clinched her first title of the season by defeating Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany 6-4, 6-3 in the final of the Generali Ladies on Sunday. It was the eighth WTA title overall for the 29th-ranked Russian, who improved to 8-4 in career finals. She had lost her only other final this year — in Washington in August.Pavlyuchenkova, who stretched her unbeaten streak in indoor hardcourt events to 15 matches after winning in Paris and Moscow last year, overcame thigh problems to take the title. My legs were not so great today, said the former 13th-ranked Russian, who had her left upper leg taped before the match started and needed treatment on her other leg between sets. But its a final so you try not to think about it.Playing in her maiden final, the 118th-ranked Friedsam dropped her serve in the opening game. The seventh-seeded Pavlyuchenkova — the only seeded player to make it beyond the second round — avoided break points to take the first set.The Russian went 2-0 down in the second set before winning four straight games. She closed out the win by breaking Friedsams serve for a fourth time.I have to thank my coach Sascha (Mueller) who has managed to improve my game step by step, especially after my injury, said the German, who was ranked a career-high 73rd in July when she sprained her ankle at the clay-court event in Bad Gastein and was out for six weeks.Friedsam failed to win another match until reaching the quarterfinals in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, two weeks ago.

Football: Four-goal Wijnaldum gives Newcastle first win

Posted:

NEWCASTLE (AFP) - Georginio Wijnaldum plundered four goals as Newcastle United thrashed Norwich City 6-2 at St James Park on Sunday to belatedly claim their first win of the Premier League season.Wijnaldum was a member of the Holland team that failed to qualify for Euro 2016 earlier in the week, but he shrugged off the disappointment with a brilliant quadruple that eased some of the pressure on Newcastle manager Steve McClaren.Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic also found the net, while Moussa Sissoko played his part with four assists, as Newcastle secured a league victory at the ninth attempt ahead of next weekends trip to northeast derby rivals Sunderland, who replaced them at the foot of the table.Norwich were 3-2 down at half-time, having scored through Dieumerci Mbokani -- making his full league debut -- and Nathan Redmond, who also hit the post in the second half. But despite a strong start to the second period they ended up well beaten, leaving Alex Neils side just three points above the relegation zone in 16th place.Newcastle showed four changes to the team thrashed 6-1 by Manchester City on their previous outing -- in which Sergio Aguero had scored five goals -- with Rob Elliot notably replacing Tim Krul in goal after the Dutchman ruptured knee ligaments on international duty. The hosts went ahead in the 14th minute when Sissoko picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box and threaded a pass through to Wijnaldum, a close-season signing from PSV Eindhoven, who steered a low shot into the bottom-left corner.Robbie Brady sounded the Norwich revolt, cracking a shot against the post from 30 yards, and the visitors equalised in the 20th minute when Martin Olssons delicious left-wing cross was stabbed home by Mbokani.Wijnaldum restored Newcastles lead six minutes later with a downward header from Sissokos clipped cross and Perez made it 3-1 when he found the bottom-left corner at the second attempt following a block by Olsson. But Newcastles defensive frailties were exposed again just 48 seconds later when Olssons deep cross from the left was adroitly side-footed home on the volley by Redmond.McClaren sent Vurnon Anita on for Cheick Tiote at half-time and he had reason to thank Wijnaldum for a third time when the Holland international cleared a header from Newcastle old boy Sebastien Bassong off the line.Bassongs chance arrived amid a spell of sustained Norwich pressure that spread jitters throughout the home ranks and visiting manager Neil added further attacking guile to his team by sending on Wes Hoolahan for Alexander Tettey. But it was Newcastle who struck next with a goal of exceptional quality.Sissoko led a break from Newcastles right-hand corner flag that culminated in him flighting a pass to Mitrovic, who chested the ball down, let it bounce, and lashed it past John Ruddy with his left foot. Two minutes later it was 5-2 as Daryl Janmaat crossed from the right for Wijnaldum to head home his hat-trick goal.Redmond then cracked a low shot against the post, but Wijnaldum had saved the best for last, cutting in from the left and smashing a 25-yard shot inside the right-hand post.

Football: Inter, Juve share spoils in record-setting 'Derby d'Italia'

Posted:

MILAN (AFP) - Inter Milan spurned the chance to take command of Italys top flight after a pulsating scoreless draw with Juventus that set a new Serie A record gate receipt record at a sold out San Siro on Sunday. The Derby dItalia is one of the most popular fixtures in Italy and a total of 79,154 spectators turned out to watch the 165th edition at Inters shared ground, producing a new all-time gate receipt of 3,740,051 euros.Roberto Mancinis highflyers hosted the four-time consecutive Serie A champions looking for their first home win in the derby since 2010, when Jose Mourinho led the Nerazzuri to an unprecedented treble of league, Cup and Champions League.A home win would also have pushed Juve 11 points adrift of Inter and even further away from successfully defending their title. In the end, the hosts were forced to settle for a share of the spoils, leaving Fiorentina, despite their 2-1 defeat to Napoli earlier Sunday, top of the pile with a one-point cushion on Roma.Mancini admitted: It was a tough game, difficult for both sides. It wasnt easy to create chances and there werent so many in the end.It was an important game because winning would have reinforced what weve achieved so far this season and pushed Juve further out of the equation. But we have to settle for a draw. It was the fair result.Inter remain third, on 17 points, with Napoli, Sassuolo and Lazio all two points adrift.Juventus, eight points behind Inter overnight amid what has been a terrible start to the season, now have nine points from eight games and sit 10 points adrift of Fiorentina.Three days before hosting Borussia Moenchengladbach, looking to claim their third consecutive win in the group stages of the Champions League, Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri was buoyed with a performance that he believes has reminded Juves rivals they are not finished yet.I dont know if we will win the league title this season but well be in the mix, Allegri said.Right now, we cant pay too much attention to results but by Christmas I want us to halve our deficit and by March want us to be close to the top of the league. To do that we need consistency, and to start scoring more goals. A team that doesnt score wont win the league title.Juventus were quickly out the blocks and on-loan Chelsea forward Juan Cuadrado was denied by Samir Handanovic after just three minutes. But Inter bossed the opening half and Marcelo Brozovic came close to a spectacular winner when he fired a curling drive after a corner that Gianluigi Buffon tipped onto his bar and back out into play.Juventus survived a first half onslaught to settle into their game in a far more open second half, but when their best chance came Sami Khedira could only fire off the base of the post after being set up by Alvaro Morata. It was Juves best chance of the game and left them hoping to convert a dwindling number of half-chances in the closing minutes.Mandzukic had replaced Morata on 71 minutes and he failed to connect cleanly with a cross from the right, and then Cuadrados cut-back from the right byline found no takers.

Football: Higuain on target as Napoli edge Fiorentina

Posted:

MILAN (AFP) - Gonazalo Higuains fifth league goal of the season helped Napoli to a precious 2-1 win over Fiorentina on Sunday as Mauricio Sarris men moved up to fourth place in Serie A.Napoli welcomed Fiorentina to the San Paolo looking to maintain a recent purple patch that has seen Sarris side remain unbeaten in their last six outings. Fiorentina were tough customers, but after Nikola Kalinic had levelled Lorenzo Insignes superb opener for the hosts, Higuain struck in the 75th minute to secure Napolis fourth win of the campaign.Fiorentina, conceding just their second defeat, remain top but now have just a one-point lead on Roma and two on Inter Milan, who could go top of the league if they beat Juventus in the Derby dItalia later Sunday.Elsewhere, Sampdorias promising start came to a shuddering halt with a 2-0 defeat at Frosinone, while Lazio were stunned 2-1 away to Sassuolo.Atalanta, meanwhile, romped to 3-0 win in Bergamo that came complete with a stunning corner kick goal from Alejandro Gomez.Mauricio Pinilla gave the hosts a welcome eighth-minute opener after meeting Maxi Moralezs curling delivery from the right to head past Carpi keeper Vid Belec at his near post.Belec was beaten again on the stroke of half-time in more spectacular fashion, Gomez hitting a superb corner that sneaked over the entire Carpi defence and into the far top corner.Atalanta wrapped up the points when Luca Cigarini fired past Belec from the penalty spot on 63 minutes after Pinilla was fouled by Igor Bubnjic.Paulo Sousas Fiorentina have been rightly described as one of the most stylish teams in the league and were unlucky not to snatch a share of the points at the San Paolo. On the quarter hour Jakub Blaszczykowski brought a great one-handed save from Napoli keeper Peper Reina after turning on the edge of the area to unleash a left-footed drive. When Higuain was impeded by Milan Badelj when just about to pull the trigger minutes later, he earned a free kick that Insigne curled into the waiting arms of Ciprian Tatarusanu. Napolis players surrounded the referee on the stroke of half-time to demand the expulsion of Davide Astori after the Italian defender tugged at Allans shirt to stop him launching an offensive down the right flank. From the free kick, Napoli almost found the opening, Higuain heading wide of the target from Insignes chipped cross from the left of the area. The deadlock was finally broken two minutes after the restart when Insigne beat Tatarusanu at his far post after running on to Marek Hamsiks superb defence-splitting pass down the left.Minutes later Higuain spurned the chance to double Napolis lead when he bundled just over from close range.Napoli appeared to be on their way to a share of the spoils after Croatia international Kalinic, who hit a hat-trick in the 4-1 ormp over Inter, ran on to Josip Ilicics delivery to slot the ball past Reina down low.But minutes later the stadium erupted when Higuain dispossessed Ilicic deep in Fiorentina territory, played a one-two with Dries Mertens and held off his marker to beat Tatarusanu down low.

Golf: Sullivan wins by nine shots in Portugal

Posted:

VILAMOURA (AFP) - Andy Sullivan won his third European Tour title of the season at Vilamoura on Sunday, dominating the Portugal Masters throughout for a commanding nine-shot victory. The 29-year-old Englishman, who won twice in South Africa earlier in the year, was already leading by five at the start of the day and he never looked like relinquishing that lead as he carded a superb 66 to finish a massive 23 under par.Another Englishman, Chris Wood, took second place on 14 under after a final round of 68, with Anthony Wall, Trevor Fisher and Eduardo de la Riva another shot back in joint third.Sullivan opened with three pars before holing from 25 feet for a birdie on the fourth and two-putting for another on the par-five fifth to reach 20 under par.He was furious with himself for three-putting the 12th for par after finding the green in two, but the former Walker Cup made certain of victory with a birdie on the 14th.He then picked up further shots on the 17th and 18th to put the seal on a brilliant wire-to-wire success. The win moves Sullivan into the top 50 of the world rankings and means he has three wins in 23 events after not claiming a victory in his first 84 on the European Tour. Those two wins in South Africa were unbelievable, but to show your peers that you can do it in Europe as well is unbelievable and to do it in front of so many people from my home golf club, Sullivan said.I didnt really feel like I took that many risks until the end there and I just thought Id play within myself and let them try and catch me.Im not going to make any mistakes, and I didnt today. Bogey free is unbelievable, its just what I wanted to do and its just incredible.

RugbyU: Foley breaks Scots' hearts as Wallabies win thriller

Posted:

TWICKENHAM (AFP) - Bernard Foleys penalty a minute from time saw Australia break Scotland hearts as they won a thrilling World Cup quarter-final 35-34 at Twickenham on Sunday.Fly-half Foley, who missed his first three goal-kicks, held his nerve amidst raucous boos from Scotland fans unhappy with an offside call by South African referee Craig Joubert.I dont know if Ive got ice-cool nerves. Id rather not be kicking them right at the death, Foley told the BBC.There is a lot of character in this side. Even when we were behind with five minutes to go, we knew we had a chance. But credit goes to Scotland. The penalty came from a botched Scottish line-out, with a knocked forward ball ending up in the hands of Scotland forward Jon Welsh, who was then offside. However, replays suggested a touch in between by Australias Nick Phipps, which could have led to a scrum rather than a penalty. They got the TMO (television match official) for everything else, its such a big decision -- why would you not get the TMO for that?, frustrated Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw told ITV.However, a World Rugby spokesman later told AFP that Joubert was unable to call upon the TMO as the incident had not taken place in the lead-up to a try and did not involve foul play.It had seemed Mark Bennetts intercept try seven minutes from time, when he grabbed a loose pass from James Slipper, had set up a huge World Cup upset by Scotland, who lost all five of their matches in this years Six Nations. But Australia, the 1991 and 1999 world champions will now face Argentina, who beat Ireland 43-20 earlier in Cardiff, next Sunday again at Twickenham.Scotlands defeat meant that for the first time the last four in a World Cup would be an entirely southern hemisphere affair.Australia had a measure of control at 25-19 heading into the final quarter. But Finn Russells charge-down of Foleys kick led to a try for wing Tommy Seymour.Laidlaw, who kicked 19 points in total, missed the difficult conversion, but Australias lead had been cut to a point at 25-24. Australia appeared to have wrapped up the match in the 63rd minute. They won a Scotland line-out off a Scotland throw and and centre Tevita Kuridrani, bursting through the cover, scored a converted try. That gave Australia a 32-24 lead. But scrum-half Laidlaws fifth penalty cut the Wallabies advantage heading into the last 10 minutes as rain started to lash down upon Twickenham. Australia were missing two injured stars in full-back Israel Folau and No 8 David Pocock, but captain Stephen Moore and centre and man of the match Matt Giteau both won their 100th Test caps.Scotland made two late changes, recalling hooker Ross Ford and lock Jonny Gray after the pair won their appeals against three-week bans imposed for a dangerous tackle against Samoa.Australia had their first try in the ninth minute when Kuridrani, missed by Seymour, released right wing Adam Ashley-Cooper.Laidlaw got Scotland on the board with a 12th-minute penalty and five minutes later they scored a remarkably simple converted try when centre Peter Horne picked up off a ruck and caught a static Wallaby defence unawares before going in under the posts. Laidlaws penalty then made it 13-5.But Australia crossed again when, after a powerful forward effort, wing Drew Mitchell went in on the left. Foley again missed the conversion before another Laidlaw penalty made it 16-10.But on the stroke of half-time Australia had a third try.Giteau booted a kickable penalty into touch for a line-out and, from the ensuing driving maul, back-row Michael Hooper scored.Foley, however missed his third successive goal-kick and Scotland were still 16-15 in front.Scotland wing Sean Maitland was yellow carded early in the second half for a deliberate knock-on in what seemed a hardsh call by Joubert.Jouberts decision led to Australias fourth try, with Mitchell -- off another line-out move -- going into the space vacated by Maitland. This time, Foley converted to put Australia 22-16 up only for Laidlaws fourth penalty to peg Australia back.Foley replied in kind and then came the dramatic finale.

RugbyU: Argentina relish 'dream come true' win over Ireland

Posted:

CARDIFF (AFP) - Argentina were left basking in a dream come true after their sensational 43-20 victory over Six Nations champions Ireland in the World Cup quarter-final on Sunday.Los Pumas scored four tries through Matias Moroni, Juan Imhoff (2) and Joaquin Tucqulet, fly-half Nicolas Sanchez missing one penalty but on target with five others and all four conversions for a personal tally of 23 points.A scintillating opening quarter in which they raced out to a 17-0 lead proved to be the bedrock of their victory despite a spirited Irish comeback to within three points at 23-20.The Argentinians then turned the screw in the last quarter, curtailing a sudden propensity for ill-discipline that had left Ireland a way back in to regroup and score a further 17 unanswered points. We have played in the Rugby Championship for the last four years and this has given us the pace to be used to play at this level on a regular basis, coach Daniel Hourcade said of the tournament that also comprises Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.Im very happy obviously. Weve met our second objective, which was to play seven matches at the World Cup.We really want to develop. Sometimes its not about playing the whole 80 minutes, but the beginning and the end of the match, so were very happy.Hourcade, whose team play the winners of the fourth and final quarter-final clash between Australia and Scotland, hailed the impact of fresh blood off the bench, notably backrow forward Facundo Isa, centre Jeronimo de la Fuente and scrum-half Tomas Cubelli, and also the never-say-die attitude which denied the pressing Irish a score of their own.I feel very proud about the way we played and the way we won. And also the way we played at the end because we did everything we could to avoid conceding a try, Hourcade said.Sanchez, the coach said, deserved the plaudits not only for his unerring boot but also the way he steered the Pumas game.He was chosen for the man-of-the-match award, he carried out the gameplan very well. With Juan Martin Hernandez next to him, hes very effective, Hourcade said.Nicolas is a great player. Sometimes you think of him as a defence-driven player, but he really showed his all-round skills today.Hourcade said the future for Argentinian rugby was fantastic because of their involvement in the Rugby Championship and also the fact they will have a side joining the southern hemispheres Super Rugby set-up from next season. For us growth has been enormous since 2012, said the 57-year-old, who took over in October 2013 from Santiago Phelan. We started changing, building, its not something that has just started, it goes back. You need time to work on it. Since the moment we joined the championship, it has proved very important.Playing on a regular basis you need precison and this kind of game becomes normal. We trained to play for 80 minutes and were used to the end of the game being more intense than the beginning.Being part of the Rugby Championship and Super rugby next year means the future for Argentina is fantastic. This match was really hard, we now have seven days to recover. Weve been doing that for a while and Im sure well be in good condition against any team we face.Captain Agustin Creevy warned, however, that Argentina were not at the same level as the All Blacks, who smashed France 62-13 in the quarter-final on Saturday.Yesterday I was watching the All Blacks wondering when can we win by scoring 40 points and we did that today, the hooker beamed. But I dont think were at their level yet, were really improving our game but not at their level. Were a long way from being like them, weve a long way to go.

Waqar hopes Pakistan will bounce back

Posted:

DUBAI (AFP) - Head coach Waqar Younis vowed that Pakistan will bounce back from almost losing the first Test, saying on Sunday it was unacceptable to allow underdogs England to threaten a win.Pakistan were lucky not to go 1-0 down in the three-match series in Abu Dhabi on Saturday after they succumbed for just 173 runs in their second innings.Debutant leg-spinner Adil Rasheed triggered the collapse with 5-64 while paceman James Anderson and spinner Moeen Ali grabbed two wickets each. That gave England a challenging 99-run target in a possible maximum of 19 overs. They fell short by 25 runs after umpires called the match off eight overs early due to bad light. The second Test starts in Dubai from Thursday with Waqar defiant.Yes, its a big relief not being 0-1 down and I am confident that my side will bounce back, said Waqar. Before the series started it was their (England) own verdict that they were underdogs but now we are the side which have to stage a comeback.Pakistan put up a mammoth 523-8 declared on a flat Sheikh Zayed Stadium pitch with Shoaib Malik hitting an epic 245 in his first Test in five years while Asad Shafiq scored 107 and Mohammad Hafeez chipped in with 98.But Alastair Cook played the third longest innings in history to hit 263 in 836 minutes and helped England score 598-9 declared, taking a first innings lead of 75 runs.Waqar said Pakistan missed leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who was ruled out of the first match with a back spasm but has since regained full fitness.Waqar believes England will be buoyant, though.Yes, England will have their tails up. Fair enough we will get Yasir back but after their near-shocking performance they will be thinking that they can compete. Credit to England, the way they set the field and put pressure on our batsmen on the last day. Thats the right tactic as they surpassed our total in the first innings and their leg-spinner bowled well and our batsmen committed some silly mistakes.Waqar admitted he was relieved yet disappointed. If you look at the overall picture then yes its a relief. But thats not the way to finish a Test match. I have always been proud of my Test team. We have played well as a Test team for some time now and have always put up a good fight in a constructive way.Pakistan beat Australia 2-0, drew 1-1 against New Zealand, beat Bangladesh 1-0 and won 2-1 in Sri Lanka in their last four series. In the last three years we have been performing well in the Tests but unfortunately that was missing in our game. They shouldnt have come that close, said Waqar, who blamed poor shot selection for the batting failure. Its unacceptable to bat like we did in the second innings. It should have been a straightforward draw but we allowed them to threaten us and (almost) beat us.Now we would be going as the team which needed more work. The way they (England) played we have to really pull our socks (up) in the second Test. What happened was not on and we have to really improve on that if we want to win the series.Waqar admitted the Abu Dhabi pitch was slow, but said both sides missed chances. Yes, in a way it (the pitch) left us disappointed but I dont want to criticise the pitch. If you consider the chances which both the sides got, the dropped catches from both the sides, and had those been grabbed it could have been a different Test match.

De Kock, Morkel help South Africa down India

Posted:

RAJKOT (AFP) - Quinton de Kock hit 103 and Morne Morkel claimed four for 39 as South Africa brushed aside India by 18 runs in the third one-day international in Rajkot on Sunday.De Kock, the 22-year-old left-handed opener, took advantage of a flat pitch to notch up his seventh one-day century -- the fourth against India -- that lifted the Proteas to 270-7.India were restricted to 252-6 in reply, despite half-centuries from Rohit Sharma (65) and Virat Kohli, who returned to form with 77, his first substantial knock after 12 barren one-dayers.The win handed the tourists a 2-1 lead in the five-match series with the last two games to be played in Chennai (October 22) and Mumbai (October 25).South Africa had won the opening game in Kanpur by five runs and India drew level at Indore with a 22-run victory.Morkel was supported by spirited fielding by his team-mates in hot and humid weather which tied down the free-stroking Indian batsmen.Sharma, who hit 150 in a losing cause in the first match in Kanpur, shared a 72-run stand for the second wicket with Kohli after Shikhar Dhawan had fallen for 13.Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni then put on 80 for the third wicket with Kohli before he was removed by Morkel for 47 with his team still needing 78 off 49 deliveries.Morkel sealed Indias fate by dismissing Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane off successive deliveries in the 46th over, both batsmen being caught at deep mid-wicket by David Miller.Suresh Raina fell for a second successive zero, holing out in the deep against leg-spinner Imran Tahir. - Special batting performance -South African captain AB de Villiers lauded his batsmen, especially de Kock, for the teams victory. It was a very special batting performance, he said. Quinton answered a lot of questions on how valuable he is to the side.We were looking at 250 to be a par score, but we managed more than that. And the way we fought back with the ball was special.Dhoni said the target of 270 was gettable even on a pitch that became two-paced as the match went on.South Africa batted when the wicket was at its best, he said. When our turn came, the wicket kept getting lower and slower and it became difficult to play the big shots. Also there was not much dew in the evening, which made it easier for the South African bowlers.
