Football: Fear of European failure haunts peerless Bayern

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - Their Bundesliga rivals are waving the white flag for the fourth season in a row, but fear of more Champions League failure is driving Bayern Munich on in Germany. The Bavarian giants opened a seven-point lead in the Bundesliga table on Sunday with a 5-1 thrashing of Borussia Dortmund in Munich and it seems only a huge effort from a rival club could deny Bayern the title.Last seasons runners-up Wolfsburg were hammered by the same scoreline a fortnight ago. With eighth straight league wins for Pep Guardiolas side and 28 goals scored to just four conceded, it is the best start to a season in the leagues history at this stage. It seems foolish to suggest the title race could be over with October barely begun, but the lead has an ominous air with Bayern having won the Bundesliga by 10, 19 and 25 points respectively in the last three seasons. The Bavarians are chasing an unprecedented fourth consecutive title and Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel gave a clear answer when asked if Bayern have serious rivals in Germany: No, of course not.Dortmund were the last team to deny Bayern the Bundesliga in 2012 and Tuchel explained in detail why the Munich giants are peerless.Greed and attitudeIts in everything: from the quality of the atmosphere they have created here, to the level Pep Guardiola has reached with the attitude, the greed and the decisive sharpness they showed against us.They are always focused, always modest and always put in a top performance. But Guardiola dismissed any premature talk as he targets a repeat of the 2013 treble of Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup in the third, and possibly final, year of his contract.Well be German champions if we manage it, said the Spaniard, who has given no clue as to his future plans. We have a lot of matches ahead of us and were only in October. And any of his star-studded squad dreaming of the title faces a rude awakening.Anyone who thinks its over will have big problems with the coach, said Guardiola.Everyone has to give their all, if they dont, there is someone who will be waiting to take their place.Veteran wingers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery are a case in point. Both are currently sidelined by injuries, but in their absence Brazil winger Douglas Costa and France Under-21 talent Kingsley Coman are now shoo-ins on Bayerns flanks. Both were signed as Bayern were found wanting for pace out wide in the Champions League semi-finals last season when Robben and Ribery again picked up injuries.Bayern were humbled 3-0 at Barcelona, then beat the Spaniards 3-2 in Munich before exiting at the semi-final stage for the second time under Guardiola, having bowed out to Real Madrid in 2013/14.In both of the previous seasons, Bayern only started dropping league points after winning the title early and the lack of sharpness showed when it came to the business end of the Champions League.Bayern are currently top of Group F after thumping wins at Olympiakos (3-0) and at home to Dinamo Zagreb (5-0) before they face bottom side Arsenal away in a fortnight.Fear of failingIt doesnt matter how many points ahead we are, we need to keep working hard, insisted Bayerns record-setting goal-scorer Robert Lewandowski, who has scored 12 times in seven league games. We cant make the same mistakes we made last year.We werent in good form at important times at the end of the season. While pundits are bemoaning the lack of excitement in the Bundesliga, Thomas Mueller said those complaints fall on deaf-ears in the Bayern dressing room. When we lose, no one is going to tap us on the shoulder and say its great that you are making the league so exciting, quipped the Germany forward. Therefore, were trying to win everything and make the league as unexciting as possible.

US and Cuba discussing joint marine reserve: Kerry

Posted:

VINA DEL MAR (AFP) - The United States and its former Cold War foe Cuba are discussing a joint maritime reserve in waters between their countries, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday.Kerry was in Chile for the Our Ocean conference, where several countries and foundations announced new efforts to preserve the marine environment and fisheries. The United States had already unveiled two new marine reserves on its own territory at the conference, and Kerry revealed that another may be the fruit of the US rapprochement with Cuba.We are also working to finalize a new sister marine protected area arrangement with Cuba to connect protected sides in our two countries, so we can better collaborate on scientific research, education, and sound management, he said.Kerry did not give details on where the reserve would be, but there are barely 90 miles (145 kilometers) of shallow tropical waters between Cubas northern shore and the US state of Florida.Talks on the reserve will form part of the ongoing process of renewing Cuban and US ties, which were cut off five decades ago at the height of the Cold War and only restored in July.Kerry said he hoped to visit Cuba in late January to pursue the dialogue.

US protests Baghdad opening Green Zone to traffic

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States protested Monday the opening of Baghdads Green Zone to the public, after 12 years of closure of the heavily fortified area home to top Iraqi political institutions and embassies. The four-square-mile (10-square-kilometer) International Zone of Baghdad was already the seat of government power under former president Saddam Hussein and became known as the Green Zone after the 2003 US-led invasion. We have repeated voiced our concerns over the easing of these restrictions, State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters. Were obviously monitoring the security conditions very closely as this easing takes place, these actions take place, and are going to continue to adjust our security posture as needed. The Iraqi measure, announced Sunday, still keeps many restrictions. It offers limited access to the vast area, with most streets still requiring a special badge, but it is likely to be popular nonetheless and ease traffic congestion.Toner said the Iraqi authorities had kept the US government informed throughout the process as they prepared to reopen the Green Zone.US troops withdrew from Baghdad in late 2011, but the US Embassy and travel by US officials are still under heavy security provided by American armed forces.

Tennis: Uncle Toni opens door to 'super-coach' for Nadal

Posted:

BEIJING (AFP) - Rafael Nadals lifelong mentor, his uncle Toni, has opened the door to hiring a super-coach if the 14-time Grand Slam-winner fails to recapture his spark next season.Toni Nadal said the 29-year-old should consider following Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and others by bringing in a superstar mentor if the turnaround does not come soon.Calls for Nadal to abandon Toni blew up after he flopped at both the French Open, a tournament he has won nine times, and Wimbledon during a dismal run this year.I think you need to ask Rafael, he said at the China Open in Beijing, when asked by AFP if Nadal should consider a new mentor. But we have a group and Im the coach of Rafael for ever, since Rafael was three years old... and things were always good for us.Its true that this year hes going a little down but I am sure the comeback of Rafael is coming soon.Maybe if next year Rafael is playing not too good, then I think he can think about some changes in his game or in his team.Top-ranked Djokovic has flourished since adding Boris Becker to his team, winning three Grand Slam titles this year, while Roger Federer, 34, is enjoying an Indian summer under Stefan Edberg.Britains Andy Murray pioneered the trend when he hired Ivan Lendl as his coach, in what was a surprise move at the time but helped him win two Grand Slam titles and Olympic singles gold. But Nadals set-up has always been unusual and Toni, despite his lack of credentials when they started out, has forged a career which has made him one of the most successful coaches in tennis history. After John McEnroe sparked the debate over Nadals team, Djokovic was one player who leapt to uncle Tonis defence.I dont see a big reason for this to happen. I think hes (Nadal) going to answer better. But from what Ive seen, hes saying its not necessary, the Serb said at Wimbledon. He has won 14 Grand Slam titles. Hes one of the best players in the game with his uncle Toni who has been with him for his entire career.Nadal himself insists he can get back to the top, and is using the end-of-year swing starting in Beijing as practice for next season.I think I am working well. I am very motivated to go for that challenge that brings me the chance to overcome a tough situation for me, he said on Sunday.I love that feeling, and I am going to fight to make that happen.Toni Nadal was speaking while promoting the Rafa Nadal Academy, which will open in his home town of Manacor in Mallorca next May.

Tennis: Nishikori quashes Croatian rebellion in Tokyo

Posted:

TOKYO (AFP) - Defending champion Kei Nishikori survived a courageous ambush attempt from Croatian teenager Borna Coric to reach the second round of the Japan Open on Monday.Playing his first match since helping Japan preserve their place in the Davis Cup world group with victory over Colombia last month, second seed Nishikori had to work extremely hard for his 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win in Tokyo.Coric, who stunned Andy Murray in Dubai earlier this year, threatened to spring another upset after exploding from the blocks to take the first set, sealing it with a vicious kick serve which forced Nishikori into a wild return. But Nishikori, who currently features in a Japanese television commercial for instant noodles dressed as a samurai and smashing a hapless blond-haired opponent with a sword instead of a racquet, awoke from his slumber just in time.He came roaring back to take the second set before finishing the job in brutal fashion -- an ace to give him match point and a huge serve to the body, flooring the 18-year-old Coric. He made it hard for me at the start, said the world number six, who has owned the Tokyo centre court in recent years, winning two of the last three Japan Open crowns.I knew what I was doing wrong and it was a question of cutting down on the errors, added Nishikori, chasing a fourth title of the year and the 11th of his career. I had to forget about the first set and once I did that I produced some decent stuff, he added.Nishikori, who has won titles in Memphis, Barcelona and Washington this year, will take on big-serving American Sam Querrey in the last 16 after he beat Ukraines Alexandr Dolgopolov 7-6, 6-4 in an absorbing first-round match. It will be another tough match and I know I will need to be careful with his serve, said Nishikori. But Im happy to get past the first hurdle and hopefully I can get on a roll and play better as we get closer to the weekend.Switzerlands French Open champion Stan Wawrinka, who heads a quality field in Tokyo, opens his bid against Czech Radek Stepanek on Tuesday.Wawrinka will not be relishing his second-round match if he deals with Stepanek, however, as the world number four would play Japans Tatsuma Ito, the player who dumped him out of the tournament in the first round last year. Ito beat countryman Yoshihito Nishioka 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 on Monday.

Tennis: Tearful Bouchard, dizzy Tsonga exit in Beijing

Posted:

BEIJING (AFP) - Eugenie Bouchard retired in tears and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga suffered dizzy spells before crashing to his worst defeat of the year in an incident-packed China Open first round on Monday.Bouchard has not played since she was concussed in a locker-room fall at the US Open, and she lasted just 10 games against Andrea Petkovic before having her blood pressure checked and exiting in Beijing. The Canadian sobbed into her towel and was comforted by Petkovic before she rose and walked out, waving grimly to the crowd, with the scoreline standing 6-2, 1-1 to her opponent.Earlier Tsonga refused to blame Beijings notorious air pollution as he was hit by dizzy spells before falling at the first hurdle 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 to little-known Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer.Tsonga was down in the second set when he staggered on court and took a time-out, in which he had his heartbeat checked with a stethoscope and was given medication. It was not long before the out-of-sorts Tsonga limply succumbed to Haider-Maurer, who at world number 64 becomes the lowest ranked player to beat the Frenchman this season. The Chinese capitals air pollution was in the very unhealthy range on Monday but eighth seed Tsonga said he did not know if that was what caused his problem.I dont know. You know, nothing in me can calculate if its enough oxygen for me or not. I just play tennis. Today I had an opponent, he was just better than me today, he shrugged.Tsonga added: I was like, dizzy. It came just like this, on one run. After one run, I went back to play a return and I feel a little bit dizzy. But I hope its nothing important. The departures of Tsonga and Bouchard come after womens top seeds Simona Halep and Petra Kvitova, troubled by injury and illness, both exited on Sunday. The tail-end of the season has seen a series of retirements and withdrawals, including Serena Williams decision to rest until next year. Maria Sharapova is also sidelined from Beijing with injury.World number one Novak Djokovic, unbeaten in five appearances, heads the mens draw while third seed Flavia Pennetta, the US Open champion, is now the on-paper favourite for the womens title.

Pistorius to stay in jail as parole decision delayed

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Oscar Pistorius will stay in jail after a decision to grant him parole was again delayed Monday, his lawyer told AFP, in a long battle over whether he should be released early from a prison sentence for killing his girlfriend.South Africas parole review board -- the final recourse for parole disputes -- met on Monday to determine if the Paralympic star, 28, should be allowed out on house arrest.Theyre going to refer the matter back to the (original) parole board, Brian Webber, a lawyer representing Pistorius, told AFP after the review board meeting. The double-amputee sprinter was sentenced last year to five years in prison for killing model and law graduate Reeva Steenkamp on Valentines Day 2013, the culmination of a trial that attracted global headlines. He was found guilty of culpable homicide -- a charge equivalent to manslaughter -- after saying during the trial that he shot his girlfriend through a locked bathroom door because he mistook her for an intruder.Pistorius was due to leave prison in August until Justice Minister Michael Masutha made a last-minute intervention blocking his release.Masutha said the parole board had made a mistake when they approved Pistorius for early release, but his intervention has been widely criticised by legal experts. This process is becoming a little bit unfair because of political interference... it just makes our administrative systems in South Africa look very poor, criminal lawyer Martin Hood told AFP.If a person has good behaviour and has served one sixth of their sentence, then theres no reason not to grant them parole, its a tick-the-box exercise. What theyre doing is passing the buck. The latest delay means Pistorius could still be in jail next month when a court hears an appeal by prosecutors that could keep him behind bars for a minimum of 15 years. The prosecutors are pursuing a murder conviction and a longer sentence, arguing that Pistorius deliberately killed Steenkamp after an argument. That hearing has been set for November 3.Reeva Steenkamps parents, who are convinced Pistorius murdered their daughter in a rage, have strongly opposed the athletes possible release, telling an Australian television channel in August he had ruined their lives. He killed her. He admits he killed her. Shes dead. Why didnt he just let her walk away? Why? Reevas mother June Steenkamp said in the interview.A champion Paralympian and once a poster boy for sport, Pistorius, known as the Blade Runner for the prosthetic legs he wore on the track, shot to fame when he raced against able-bodied competitors in the 2012 London Olympics.

US boy, 11, kills girl, eight, over puppy

CHICAGO (AFP) - A simple childish fight over a puppy led an 11-year-old boy to shoot and kill his eight-year-old neighbor in the US state of Tennessee, the girls grieving mother said.Latasha Dyer said her daughter was playing outside when the boy asked to see her puppy. Little McKayla said no and shortly after was shot in the chest. When we first moved to White Pine, the little boy was bullying McKayla, Latasha Dyer told WATE 6 news in a video posted on the stations website Sunday. He was making fun of her, calling her names, just being mean to her. I had to go the principal about him and he quit for a while and then all of a sudden yesterday he shot her.Dyer was overcome with emotion as she spoke to the local television station from the front steps of her mobile home in White Pine, Tennessee.I want her back in my arms, this is not fair, hold and kiss youre babies every night because youre never promised the next day with them, she said. I hope the little boy learned his lesson because he took my babys life -- and I cant get her back. She described her daughter as a precious little girl, she was a mommys girl, no matter how bad of a mood you were in she could always make you smile.Jefferson County Sheriff G.W.
