Football: Misfiring Lacazette leads Lyon past Reims

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette atoned for another missed penalty by scoring the games only goal on Saturday in a 1-0 victory at home to Reims in Ligue 1.Lazacette blasted a first-half spot-kick against the woodwork before netting just his second goal of the season shortly after as Lyon avoided a Champions League hangover on a particularly damp afternoon at the Stade Gerland. It was just a second win in seven games in all competitions for OL, who pulled to within five points of Paris Saint-Germain, after they had suffered a damaging 1-0 home defeat against Valencia in Europe four days earlier. We put in a good first-half display but it wasnt as good in the second half when we began to retreat a bit, said Lazacette. The most important thing though is the three points though.Lyon coach Hubert Fournier added: Were not going through our best period in terms of confidence. We need to boost it and its through winning matches that we can achieve that.Meanwhile it was just a second reverse of the season for surprise package Reims as their five-match unbeaten run was brought to an end.Lyon, soundly beaten at Bordeaux last weekend, were forced into an early reshuffle on Saturday when Milan Bisevac hobbled off after just six minutes and was replaced by Jordan Ferri.Johny Placide, whose injury-time own goal handed Lyon a 2-1 win in the same fixture last season, made a smart low stop to turn behind a deflected strike from Lacazette midway through the first half.Nicolas de Preville then tested Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes at the other end with a low drive that the Portuguese international pushed away at his near post. The hosts were awarded a penalty on 41 minutes when Jaba Kankava handled inside the area but Reims were handed a reprieve as Lacazette smashed his spot-kick against the crossbar. It was the second time Lacazette has failed to convert from the penalty spot this season following a costly miss in a 1-1 draw at nine-man Gent in the Champions League last month.Last years Ligue 1 Player of the Year redeemed himself, however, on the stroke of half-time as Lacazette exchanged passes with Claudio Beauvue before firing across Placide to put Lyon in front. The frame of the goal came to Reims rescue for a second time on 56 minutes with Beauvue sending a thumping header against the bar following a Mathieu Valbuena corner.Placide then made a fine stop to tip over a stinging long-range effort from Lacazette with substitute Grejohn Kyei squandering a glorious chance to level for Reims on 75 minutes after a wonderful ball in from Diego on the left.Prince Oniangue nearly snatched a point for the visitors at the death but Lopes threw himself to his right to palm away the Congo midfielders scissor kick.Later, in-form Nice will look for a fourth consecutive win when they host Nantes, while promoted Angers are at home to Bastia.Troyes and bottom side Gazelec Ajaccio, who face Guingamp and Toulouse respectively, will bid to belatedly register their first victory this term. All eyes will be on the Parc des Princes on Sunday when league leaders PSG take on bitter rivals Marseille in Le Classique.Second-placed Saint-Etienne visit Caen with third-placed Rennes at Monaco and Bordeaux making the trip to Lorient. On Friday, Lille got a much-needed boost with Sofiane Boufal and Djibril Sidibe lifting the northerners to a 2-0 win over fellow strugglers Montpellier.

Investigators piece together motive of Oregon shooter

Posted:

ROSEBURG (AFP) - Investigators on Saturday tried to piece together evidence on why a 26-year-old gunman went on a shooting rampage at a school in Oregon, killing nine people.Officials said the gunman, identified as Chris Harper Mercer, was enrolled in the English writing class at Umpqua Community College, where the shooting broke out.He died following a shootout with police. Some unconfirmed reports said Mercer was shot and wounded by police but managed to run away and then shot himself. The Los Angeles Times, quoting local police, said Mercer entered the class around 10:30 am, after it had started, and began firing.Investigators said 13 weapons belonging to the gunman had been recovered, including six at the school. A flak jacket and five rounds of ammunition were also recovered at the school. The shooting, the latest in a string of similar attacks in recent years at colleges and schools in the United States, has revived a fierce debate on gun control.Officials say Mercer had struggled with mental health problems for some time and left behind a typed statement several pages long in which he indicated he felt lonely and was inspired by previous mass killings. He didnt have a girlfriend and he was upset about that, The New York Times quoted an unnamed senior law enforcement official as saying. He comes across thinking of himself as a loser, the official told the paper. He did not like his lot in life, and it seemed like nothing was going right for him.Another official said the shooter, who lived with his mother, was obsessed with guns and religion and had leanings toward white supremacy. It was unclear how long he had been a student at Umpqua, a small college of about 3,000 students located in Roseburg, a close-knit rural community. The rampage took place on the fourth day of the new school year.Several students said Mercer had also signed up for a theatre class that had not yet started.Witnesses said he asked his victims their religion before shooting them execution-style.- Passionate about guns -Investigators said they were poring through online postings made by the gunman and examining his computer to try and piece together what set off the rampage.Mercer moved from Los Angeles to Oregon with his mother in 2013, neighbors said, describing him as withdrawn and quiet but passionate when it came to guns. When we talked about guns and hunting, he was real open about it, Louie Flores, 32, a neighbor from California, told the Times. But anything about what was going on in his life, he really didnt say too much at all.In online postings linked to Mercers email address, investigators reportedly found one entry in which he expressed sympathy for a dismissed television reporter who killed two former colleagues during a live broadcast in Virginia in August. In Roseburg, residents tried to come to terms with the tragedy and the sad reality that their town would now be remembered as the site of a mass killing. The bodies of the nine victims -- five women and four men aged between 18 and 67 -- were handed back to their families on Friday.Nine other people were injured in the rampage, including one woman who was shot in the head, officials said.Chris Mintz, 30, an army veteran, had tried to stop the bloodshed by charging Mercer but was shot seven times while pleading that it was his sons sixth birthday. He survived. The mass shooting reflects a grim reality of American life, with similar incidents happening on a regular basis. The last mass shooting at a US school took place in 2012 when 20 elementary school students and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.According to data compiled by the group Everytown for Gun Safety, there have been 142 school shootings in the United States since the Sandy Hook massacre.

Football: Mane and slick Southampton deepen Chelsea gloom

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Chelseas disastrous season continued with a 3-1 home defeat by Southampton on Saturday that left Jose Mourinhos Premier League champions 10 points off the pace in 16th place.Having taken an early lead through Willian, Mourinhos side collapsed alarmingly, with Steven Davis levelling for Ronald Koemans team before second-half goals from Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle wrapped up the win.Mourinho had suffered just one home league defeat in over four seasons at Chelsea coming into the season, but has now already seen his side beaten twice at Stamford Bridge during the current campaign, following an earlier defeat by Crystal Palace in August. There were few signs Chelsea are ready to return to the form that saw them cruise to last seasons title and the growing discontent around the club was apparent when home supporters greeted the final whistle with a chorus of boos.By his own admission, this is the worst spell of Mourinhos career and the manager this week found himself in the unfamiliar position of being forced to defend his methods following reports of discontent within his squad. The failure to beat struggling Newcastle United seven days previously had summed up Chelseas problems, with Mourinho describing the first-half display at St James Park as being on a scale of one to 10, minus one. That was followed by defeat at Porto in the Champions League and the Portuguese reacted by making four changes.Skipper John Terry returned to make only his second start in six games, while Radamel Falcao was handed his first league start of the season in place of the suspended Diego Costa. After the recent turmoil, Chelsea needed an early break to settle any nerves and it came after just 10 minutes when Willian punished the visitors after Oriol Romeu had fouled Eden Hazard.- Cahill, Terry at fault -Curling the free-kick in from the left-hand side of the box, the Brazilian directed the set-piece beyond goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg and into the top-right corner.Had Oscar managed to beat Stekelenburg with a curling shot midway through the half, the home side might have gone on to dominate.Instead, though, they allowed Southampton to come back into the game with Koemans side growing in confidence and fuelled by a sense of injustice when a strong appeal for a penalty was turned down after Mane appeared to have been tripped by Ramires.Mane was becoming increasingly influential and his threaded pass presented Ryan Bertrand with the chance to mark his return to Stamford Bridge with a goal, only for the left-back to be denied by Asmir Begovic. The equaliser came two minutes before the interval when Pelle held off Gary Cahill and chested Jose Fontes long ball into the path of Davis, who struck the ball on the full past Begovic from 20 yards.Chelseas belief appeared to have disappeared when the game resumed after the break and it took another excellent Begovic save and a block by Gary Cahill to repel efforts from Mane. Both Cahill and Terry appeared vulnerable to the pace of Mane and both defenders were at fault when the Senegal forward put the visitors ahead in the 60th minute.First, Cahill lost possession deep inside his own half, then Terry was easily turned by Mane as the forward collected Pelles pass and shot beneath Begovic.Worse was to come for Chelsea when Hazards misplaced pass was intercepted near halfway by Pelle, allowing Mane to break towards the home penalty area before returning the ball to Pelle, who shot inside the far post.

Football: 'World class' Aguero scores five in one game

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Sergio Aguero insisted firing Manchester City to an important victory was more important than individual accolades after the Argentina striker bagged a remarkable five-goal haul in Saturdays 6-1 thrashing of Newcastle. The 27-year-old cancelled out Aleksandar Mitrovics opener in the 42nd minute at the Etihad Stadium and netted again in the 49th, 50th, 60th and 62nd minutes, with Kevin De Bruyne also finding the target. He became the fifth player to score five goals in an English top-flight game since the launch of the Premier League in 1992, after Andrew Cole, Alan Shearer, Jermain Defoe and Dimitar Berbatov.Agueros 20-minute goal spree also recalled the recent exploits of Robert Lewandowski, who scored five goals in nine minutes in Bayern Munichs 5-1 defeat of Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. His exploits drew praise from across the football world, but Aguero was just happy to help City back to the top of the Premier League and end his own barren run in top-flight matches.I think it was four games without scoring any goals in the Premier League so I am really pleased about my performance today, he said.Ive just realised here in the dressing room that I equalled this record but the most important thing is that we won this game and got the three points.Five goals is good and I am happy. I hope to continue in the same way. I am happy to score all these goals because it was useful to win.Aguero, who was taken off after 66 minutes, also revealed he had demolished Newcastle despite being less than fully fit.I had a problem with my hamstring in the last game in the Champions League against Borussia (Monchengladbach) but now I am feeling good, he said.It was a good decision from the manager to change me because it means no risk.City captain Vincent Kompany, who missed the game through injury, wrote on Twitter that Agueros display had been world class.De Bruyne, who also set up two of Agueros goals, said: Sergio Aguero can score goals out of nothing. It is great to have him in the team, obviously.Aguero, who famously netted the 94th-minute goal against Queens Park Rangers in 2012 that earned City the title, has now scored seven goals in four games, but he had not netted in the league since August.Im happy for Kun, he deserves it, said City manager Manuel Pellegrini, using Agueros nickname. He makes the difference. In the last game he missed chances, but he was calm and that was key.To see him play at the level he played at today... not only he must be happy, but all the fans.Explaining his decision to withdraw Aguero, Pellegrini added: He was not upset about going off. He was having treatment at half-time and it was a risk for him to finish the whole game.Aguero joined City from Atletico Madrid in 2011 for a reported fee of 35 million ($53.1 million, 47.4 million euros). He has won two league titles and the League Cup during his time at the club, making 175 appearances and scoring 115 goals.

Lahore's voters won't be impressed by PTI's banner exhibition: Saad

LAHORE: (Dunya News) – Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique has on Saturday said that Lahore’s voters won’t be impressed by the banner exhibition put on display by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI). “It occurs to me from Chairman PTI Imran Khan’s statements that he will only accept the NA-122 by-election results if his candidate wins the election”, he said, reported Dunya News.Holding a press conference at Lahore Press Club, Saad Rafique said that Pakistan won’t be able to sustain another ‘road show’. “Imran Khan should introspect. He should see if he is helping someone else’s agenda with his agenda”, said Saad Rafique.Talking about the NA-122 by-election, Saad Rafique said that Imran Khan’s statements make him think that the PTI leader will only be accepting the results of the election if his candidate wins it. He said that in the light of Lahore High Court’s decision, all ministers of the PML-N, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, can be part of the campaign. He said that the ministers have been forbidden to use government incentives during the campaign and no stone will be left unturned to keep the election-day peaceful.Saad said that the people of Lahore prefer serious politics over the exhibition of banners and the voters of NA-122 will prove this on October 11.

Joaquin upgraded to Category 4 hurricane: US forecasters

MIAMI (AFP) - Hurricane Joaquin strengthened to a Category Four storm Saturday as it moved away from the Bahamas, where it destroyed homes, caused flooding and left hundreds without power.Joaquin is a strong Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in a statement, adding that a gradual weakening is still anticipated during the next couple of days.Joaquin was packing 155 mile-per-hour (250-kilometer-per-hour) winds and had become severe the NHC said, as it announced the hurricanes ascent on the five-point Saffir-Simpson scale. The eye of Joaquin will continue to move away from the Bahamas today, and pass west of Bermuda on Sunday, the NHC said.Gusty winds will continue to affect portions of the central and southeastern Bahamas, it said, adding that Joaquin was expected to produce up to 25 inches (64 centimeters) of rain in parts of that area.Joaquin was located 595 miles southwest of Bermuda, traveling northeast at 16 miles per hour.

RugbyU: Another win and Japan will be team of World Cup: Jones

Posted:

MILTON KEYNES (AFP) - A Japan win over United States next week will entitle them to be team of the tournament even if they miss out on a historic place in the World Cup quarter-finals, said coach Eddie Jones. The 55-year-old Australian heralded his side after their impressive 26-5 win over Samoa, their second of the pool having opened with the greatest upset in World Cup history a 34-32 victory over South Africa. If we win three games we will end up team of the tournament, Jones said.Saturdays win put the Japanese back in contention for a place in the last eight -- a perfect boost for the domestic game ahead of their hosting of the tournament in 2019. They trail Scotland by just two points going into the final round of Pool B games.Japan will next be looking to beat the United States to keep pressure on the pool leaders South Africa and Scotland. We play against the USA; lets hope Scotland do the right thing to Samoa next week, said Jones. We dont control those things. We always said we came to this tournament with two targets. One, to be the team of the tournament and, secondly, to make the quarter-finals.Three wins would make them team of the tournament, he said.Jones, who steps down after the campaign ends to take over South African Super Rugby franchise Western Stormers, said the impact their exploits had had back home had been phenomenal. If you look at the history of Japanese rugby, we have won one World Cup game in 24 years, said Jones, who is half Japanese. We have just doubled that. We have changed the history of rugby in Japan.Twenty million people watched the game against Scotland, they even opened the ground for the fans to watch back home.Five years ago there would be 4,000 people in there and now they are opening the stadium when we are not even there. Thats a pretty considerable change.Jones, who guided Australia to a heartbreaking defeat by England in the 2003 final in Sydney and was an adviser to the 2007 Springboks when they won the World Cup, poured praised on his forwards coach former England captain Steve Borthwick. Our forwards were fantastic today. We shut Samoa out of the game with some set-piece dominance and our work in defence round the ruck was first class, said Jones.England need to call him into their ranks, especially after tonight when we (Australia) pump (beat) England. His attention to detail is incredible. He has got the guys to believe that height is not a major factor in lineout. Our tallest lock is 6ft 4in, we are a very small team but we beat teams with our speed and movement, and Borthwick has been a driving force in that.Jones said that try-scorer Akihito Yamada would need to pass a head test to see if he would be fit for the final pool game.He looks all right, mate. He might be in line for an academy award, he said laughing. He got knocked out, but hes recovered well so we will do the appropriate concussion protocol and he should be available for our next game. His inspirational captain Michael Leitch explained why he had opted to be conservative in the second-half and chose to kick for goal instead of going for a bonus point which could decide their fate ultimately.Samoa kept attacking and our legs were getting tired, said the New Zealand-born flanker, who turns 27 on Wednesday. For 12 minutes they were going for a try. We just wanted to stay consistent.

A source at the nearby Kadhimiyah hospital and an interior ministry official confirmed the casualty toll.Adan Square has been repeatedly hit by attacks. More than 20 people died in a suicide bomb blast there in February. The Islamic State jihadist group, which has controlled swathes of Iraq since last year, claims responsibility for most such attacks but there was no immediate claim for Saturdays twin blasts.According to figures released by the United Nations Mission in Iraq on Thursday, a total of 717 Iraqis were killed and another 1,216 were injured in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in September 2015.The Baghdad governorate alone accounted for 257 of the total deaths. The UN says its figures only account for the casualties that can be verified and are likely far below reality.
