Misbah, Younis steady Pakistan, lead extended to 358 for 3

DUBAI: (Dunya News, Web Desk, AFP) – As skipper Misbah ul-Haq and Younis Khan steadied a struggling Pakistan on Day-3, the team piled on 222 for the loss of 3 wickets in the 2nd innings and extended their lead to 358 runs. Misbah is still not out with 87 runs while Younis Khan is batting on 71, reported Dunya News.Early in the innings, Shan Masood was taken out by James Anderson yet again on a ball leaving the left-handed batsman who edged it to the keeper and was gone for 1. Hafeez was then joined by Shoaib Malik who seemed to be in some kind of haste during his brief stay at the wicket. Going hard at the bowlers, Shoaib Malik survived only 13 balls on the crease. Missing out on a tempting delivery on the first ball of Wood’s over, Malik struck one over his shoulder for the boundary over the point on the next. However, on the fourth ball of the over, Malik went hard on the ball again and played it on.With Malik and Shan gone, Hafeez and Younis took it upon them to steady the innings. Hafeez did well for his 51 but was gone on the very first ball after scoring his fifty, edging one to the first slip where Joe Root made no mistake. When the skipper joined Younis in the middle, Pakistan were 83 for 3 and a collapse was very much on the cards if these two didn’t fire. But since they hardly ever miss, Younis Khan went on to score a typical Younis Khan innings, making 71* and reaching 9000 overall Test runs in the course. He became the first Pakistani to score 9000 Test runs and only the 14th cricketer worldwide to achieve the milestone. Misbah was rock solid, as usual, on the other side of the pitch. He batted brilliantly for his 87 and is still at the crease. The lead has now been extended to a comfortable 358 for 3 and with 2 days still left in the match, the game is poised for a result; most probably in Pakistan’s favor.Earlier:Riaz, Shah spark England collapse in second Pakistan TestRiaz, who had a morning spell of nine overs for 3-15, finished with 4-66 and Shah grabbed 4-93 as England were bowled out for 242 after resuming the day on a well-placed 182-3.Pakistan had made 378 in their first innings.Riaz initiated the collapse in which England lost their seven remaining wickets for 60 runs as he bowled with venom and guile to dismiss a dangerous looking Joe Root (88), Ben Stokes (four) and Jos Butler (nought) in an incisive spell.Shah dismissed Adil Rashid (nought) and Jonny Bairstow in one over and Mark Wood (one) while fast bowler Imran Khan had James Anderson (four) to finish with 2-33.England had hoped their batting would rally around the fast-rising Root who added two boundaries off Shah in the fourth over of the day to his overnight score of 76.But Riaz found the edge of Root s bat with a sharp outswinger to give Pakistan the much-needed breakthrough. Root smashed 12 boundaries during his 141-ball knock.Bairstow survived some close calls and was surprisingly given not out by television umpire Chris Gaffaney of New Zealand when replays showed Younis Khan had taken the edge off Shah in the first slip.Bairstow, then on 40, managed six more before Shah trapped him in front of the wicket, leaving England reeling at 223-8.In between, Riaz had Stokes and Butler caught behind in successive overs. The first of three Tests ended in a draw in Abu Dhabi last week.

China central bank sees 'very normal' growth of 6-7 percent in next few years

Posted:

BEIJING (Reuters) China will be able to keep economic growth at around 6-7 percent annually over the next three to five years, a top Peoples Bank of China policymaker said on Saturday, a day after the bank cut interest rates for the sixth time in less than a year. The comments from Yi Gang, vice governor of the Peoples Bank of China, appeared to be aimed at reassuring investors this level of growth - the slowest pace in two decades but still faster than other major economies - is the Chinese economys new normal.Chinas future economic growth will still be relatively quick. Around seven, six-point-something - these will all be very normal, he told a conference in Beijing. As well as cutting interest rates on Friday, the PBOC lowered the amount of cash that banks must hold as reserves. Both moves were bids to jumpstart growth in Chinas slowing economy, a drag on global growth that has been of major concern in emerging markets and other leading economies.Monetary policy easing in the worlds second-largest economy is at its most aggressive since the 2008/09 financial crisis, as growth looks set to slip to a 25-year-low this year of under 7 percent.China will lower the reserve requirement ratio - the amount of cash that major banks need to keep on hand - in the future at a normal pace, Yi said. The vice governor said the PBOC planned to keep interest rates at a reasonable level to reduce the corporate debt burden, and noted that interest rate liberalization does not mean that the central bank would reduce regulation of rates.China will also continue to set benchmark lending and deposit rates for some time, he said, but these rates would not restrict market pricing.Data released on Monday showed Chinas economy grew 6.9 percent between July and September from a year earlier, dipping below 7 percent for the first time since the global financial crisis.Yi also noted that Chinas stock market, which has fallen sharply since June, had completed most of its adjustments and that the yuan, which was buffetted in the wake of a surprise devaluation in early August, has stabilized. The PBOC was looking into leverage levels in the debt market, he noted.Yi also commented on Chinas debt levels. He said that China did not have exceptionally high debt levels, and while the bank is not overly anxious about cutting the level of leverage in the economy, the overall strategy is to stabilize leverage levels.

Sri Lanka leads West Indies by 202 at lunch

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Milinda Siriwardana and captain Angelo Mathews steadied Sri Lanka with the first 50 plus partnership to take lunch at 165-6 on day three of the second Test in Colombo Saturday.Sri Lanka were 202 runs ahead of the West Indies after scoring 200 in the first innings and getting the tourists bowled out for 163 on Friday. The West Indies struck a double blow to Sri Lanka by dismissing the overnight batsmen Kaushal Silva and Dinesh Chandimal with the score at 84, after play resumed Saturday at 77-2.Silva was well caught low down at first slip by Jermaine Blackwood off Jomel Warrican for 32.Chandimal was held by wicket keeper Denesh Ramdin leaping to his left off Jerome Taylors delivery which nipped back in from outside off stump for 12.With two wickets in three balls and just 121 in the lead, the West Indies seemed to take control.Siriwardana had other ideas by carrying the attack to the bowlers. He lifted both Warrican and the other spinner Devendra Bishoo down the ground for sixes as he was gaining confidence. He surprisingly fell to an occasional off spin by Kraigg Brathwaite by edging a perfect leg cutter to Blackwood at slip for 42. The fifth wicket stand with Mathews yielded 67 runs.At the stroke of lunch, Kusal Janith Perera became Brathwaites second wicket, edging an attempted cut off a short ball behind to Ramdin for 5.Brathwaite had the best bowling figures of 2 for 6 while Taylor had 2 for 26 and Warrican 2 for 57.West Indies need to win the second Test if they are to level the two-match series after Sri Lanka won the first game at Galle by an innings. West Indies are playing their 11th Test in Sri Lanka, but are yet to win a single.
