Football: Misfiring Germany seek Georgia win to seal Euro berth

Posted:

LEIPZIG, Germany (AFP) - Under-fire Germany want to finish their qualifying campaign with a win over Georgia on Sunday to secure qualification to Euro 2016 and bounce back from their shock defeat to Ireland. The world champions remain top of Group D despite suffering a 1-0 defeat to the Irish on Dublin, which kept Martin ONeills side in contention to qualify directly.Germany need only a draw at home to minnows Georgia to ensure their ticket to France next year and even if they lost, only a draw between Poland and Ireland in Warsaw would condemn them to a play-off spot.A draw in Dublin would have been enough for Joachim Loews side but substitute Shane Long made sure Irish eyes were smiling with the winning second-half goal after outpacing Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng before beating Manuel Neuer in the Germany goal on Thursday. The top two sides go through from the group, but Germany, on 19 points are just one ahead of Poland and Ireland.Finishing third in the group could put Germany in the unthinkable position of needing to win a two-legged play-off to reach Euro 2016.But Loew is more concerned with simply bouncing back from a rare and surprising defeat by returning to winning ways. The situation is clear, but we have things in our own hands and we want to win against Georgia to qualify directly, said LoewGoetze outLoew will also have to do without a couple of key components from his World Cup winning team as forward Mario Goetze is definitely out with a hamstring tear while captain Bastian Schweinsteiger is doubtful after injuring a hamstring in the warm-up in Dublin.Mario will not be there for sure. Well have to wait to see how Schweinsteiger is, but his chances are very small, said Loew.Georgia are second from bottom with just three wins in their nine matches and Germany have won all four meetings between the teams.Germany have not lost in 21 home qualifiers since a 3-0 defeat by the Czech Republic in October 2007, including 17 wins and four draws. In contrast, Georgia have won just one of their last 23 competitive away matches and their single victory was a 3-0 win against minnows Gibraltar.Georgia, coached by former Eintracht Frankfurt player Kakhaber Tskhadadze, will be without injured playmaker Giorgi Chanturia, who plays for Duisburg in Germanys second division, but the visitors will be looking to follow Irelands example.Dream fixtureThere is no bigger stage for our boys than a game against the world champions, said former Hertha Berlin defender Levan Kobiashvili, who is now president of the Georgian FA.This is a dream. But a third defeat in their Euro qualifying campaign would be a nightmare for Germany, having already lost to Poland and now the Irish, on their rocky road to the European championships in France.Loew described the Dublin defeat as unexpected and unnecessary. We were superior, we were dominant, but we didnt do anything with it. It was one of the most unnecessary defeats we have suffered in recent years, he said. This is not the first time Germany have failed to hit the target in front of goal since winning the World Cup and Loew says they will fix that against Georgia. The final passes were not arriving in the penalty area against Ireland and that is something which we must improve, said Loew.We lacked some decent finishing, then we made one mistake, opened the door for them and Ireland took their chance. But in terms of fighting spirit, I cant fault my team.

Football: Klinsmann confident of US support for Mexico clash

Posted:

PASADENA (AFP) - Jurgen Klinsmann believes the United States will have the benefit of a sizeable home support for his teams showdown with Mexico, four years after a Gold Cup clash at the same venue turned into a virtual away game.Klinsmann said the strides made by American soccer in the past four years would mean there was no repeat of the 2011 Gold Cup final, when Mexican fans vastly outnumbered US supporters at the iconic 93,000 Pasadena Rose Bowl. Its going to be interesting to see how many fans will cheer for the US and how big will be the presence for the Mexican fans, Klinsmann admitted. But I think definitely youll see a shift. You cant compare it to the Gold Cup four years ago when the Mexican fans outnumbered the Americans by I think 90 to 10.I think we will have a huge, huge support tomorrow night.Klinsmann said he hoped the success of the USA team in recent years may even persuade US-born fans of Mexican descent to switch allegiances.Hopefully theyll be a few fans who come to the game in the green shirts of Mexico and maybe by the end theyll be cheering for the red white and blue, he joked. It depends on how the game goes. You have to win your fans over. You have to play well and excite them. Once you get that feeling across to the crowd, special things can happen and vice versa. But there are fans coming from all over the country. The support we had in Brazil at the World Cup last year was incredible. The team cant wait to get out on the field. The winner of Saturdays clash will qualify for the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.

Nobel prize a tribute to 'courage' of Tunisian people: Obama

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President Barack Obama congratulated Tunisian civil society groups who helped secure a democratic transition on their Nobel Peace Prize win Friday, calling it a tribute to the nations courage.Todays award is therefore also a tribute to the perseverance and courage of the Tunisian people who, in the face of political assassinations and terrorist attacks, have come together in a spirit of unity, compromise and tolerance, Obama said in a statement.Obama, who hosted Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi at the White House in May, stressed that in a region gripped by so much tumult and violence, Tunisia points the way to a better future -- one in which stability is pursued through peaceful dialogue, not violence and division.Tunisias National Dialogue Quartet hailed the award as both a surprise and a testament to the countrys transition to democracy after the 2011 revolution. The Quartet includes the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (UTICA), the Tunisian Human Rights League and the Tunisian Order of LawyersJust as the world must support the Tunisian people, we must stand with civil society groups around the world who advocate, often at great risk to themselves, for the human rights and inherent dignity of every human being, Obama said.In this never-ending work for justice and peace, these fearless men and women have a steadfast partner in the United States of America.Secretary of State John Kerry also hailed the Quartet. As assassinations and street protests roiled domestic politics in 2013, the National Dialogue Quartet played an invaluable role in keeping Tunisias transition on track, he said.Their inspiring achievement is a shining example for all societies that are working towards an inclusive transition from dictatorship to democracy.

US, Russia to hold new Syria air safety talks: Pentagon

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Russia and the United States are set to renew talks to avoid accidents in Syrian air space as the two countries conduct separate bombing campaigns, a US official said Friday. The Pentagon expressed alarm this week after Russia failed to quickly answer proposals made during initial talks, even as it launched cruise missiles from the Caspian Sea and repeatedly violated Turkish air space. But on Friday, Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said Moscow had filed an appropriate response. The Department of Defense has received a formal response from the Russian ministry of defense regarding DoDs proposal to ensure safe air operations over Syria, Cook said.Department leaders are reviewing the Russian response and talks are likely to take place as soon as this weekend.US officials were furious after Russia only gave them a vague, verbal heads-up about an hour before Moscow launched its bombing campaign on September 30.The two countries had deconfliction talks the next day via videoconference, aimed at ensuring Russian warplanes didnt cross paths with drones and US-led coalition jets.Talks center around basic safety measures including which language air crews should communicate in and how much space planes should leave each other.Russian planes have flown near a US drone, officials say, and the US military has had to reroute some flights to avoid any close calls. The Pentagon for weeks watched Russia build up its military presence in northwestern Syria, but the launch of Moscows campaign seemed to catch officials off guard. The United States has since last year led a 60-plus member coalition of nations bombing Islamic State jihadists in Iraq and Syria. Also Friday, the Obama administration announced plans to overhaul the Pentagons much-criticized program to train and equip moderate Syrian rebels to fight IS in Syria.Instead of training units of troops to fight, the program is being refocused to arm selected rebel leaders whose groups have been battling IS in Syria. These groups, boosted by US-supplied weapons, will supposedly push into IS territory in Syria.

Unrest spreads to Gaza as Israeli troops kill six Palestinians

Posted:

GAZA CITY (AFP) - A week of violence between Israelis and Palestinians spread to the Gaza Strip Saturday, with Israeli troops killing six in clashes on the border and Hamas calling for more unrest.A fresh wave of stabbings also hit Israel and the West Bank, including a revenge attack by a Jewish suspect that wounded two Palestinians and two Arab Israelis. The Gaza Strip had been mainly calm as unrest has shaken annexed east Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank in recent days. But a rocket fired from the Palestinian enclave hit southern Israel early Saturday, causing no damages or injuries, just hours after clashes broke out east of Gaza City and Khan Yunis along the border with the Jewish state. The Israeli army said there had been on Friday multiple violent attempts to storm the border fence and a thousand rioters infiltrated the buffer zone, throwing a grenade, rocks and rolled burning tyres at the soldiers. After firing warning shots, forces on site responded with fire towards main instigators in order to prevent their advance and disperse the riot, a statement from the army read.Six Palestinians were killed, including a 15-year-old, and 80 wounded, according to medics. It was the deadliest clash in Gaza since the summer 2014 war with Israel.Palestine Liberation Organisation secretary general Saeb Erakat accused Netanyahu and his government of committing a new massacre of Palestinians in Gaza. The clashes came as Hamass chief in Gaza called the spreading violence an intifada, or uprising, and urged further unrest. In a sermon for weekly Muslim prayers at a mosque in Gaza City, Ismail Haniya said we are calling for the strengthening and increasing of the intifada.Gaza ready for confrontationIt is the only path that will lead to liberation, he said. Gaza will fulfil its role in the Jerusalem intifada and it is more than ready for confrontation. In a number of Arab towns in Israels north, masked youths blocked roads with burning tyres and hurled fire bombs and stones at police, who arrested eight suspects altogether.Stabbing attacks in the West Bank, Jerusalem and Israel itself along with rioting have raised fears of a third Palestinian intifada, following a first that began in 1987 and a second in 2000.Those two conflicts cost the lives of some 5,000 Palestinians and around 1,100 Israelis.Hamas rules Gaza, squeezed between Egypt and Israel and separated from the West Bank. It remains deeply divided from Palestinian president Mahmud Abbass Fatah party. The enclave has been hit by three wars with Israel since 2008. A 50-day conflict between Palestinian militants in Gaza and Israel in the summer of 2014 left more than 2,200 people in the territory dead and 100,000 homeless.Fridays stabbings included one by a 17-year-old Jew in the southern Israeli city of Dimona that lightly or moderately wounded two Palestinians and two Arab Israelis. This was the first such incident against Palestinians after multiple stabbings that have targeted Jews since Saturday, killing two.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu quickly condemned the attack by the Jewish youth, a sign of concerns that it could trigger further violence.Acts of terrorAttacks also continued against Israelis and Jews, with a Palestinian stabbing and lightly wounding a policeman near a West Bank settlement before being shot dead by the victim.A Jewish 16-year-old was slightly hurt in a stabbing in Jerusalem by an 18-year-old Palestinian suspect, who was arrested. And an Arab Israeli woman was shot and wounded when she tried to stab a security guard at a bus station in the northern Israeli town of Afula, police said. There have been 13 stabbings since Saturday, including the revenge assault. Five of the alleged attackers have been killed.Fridays escalation came as Israeli security forces sought to prevent the further spread of Palestinian unrest.Abbas has spoken out against violence and in favour of peaceful, popular resistance, but many youths are frustrated with his leadership as well as Israels government. In Washington, the US State Department said it regards the stabbings and shootings of Israelis by Palestinians as acts of terror, though spokesman John Kirby would not be drawn on whether the attack by the Jewish teenager was also terrorism.Fresh clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces broke out Friday in various parts of east Jerusalem and the West Bank, including near Ramallah after the funeral of Mohannad Halabi, a 19-year-old killed after allegedly stabbing two Jews to death in Jerusalems Old City on Saturday.During clashes in the Shuafat refugee camp near Jerusalem a Palestinian was seriously wounded by police gunfire, after shooting at forces, police said in a statement. He was taken to a nearby hospital. Were currently in a spiral that appears to be heading toward escalation, said Ido Zelkovitz, an expert on Palestinian history at Haifa University. The current clashes are being led by a young generation with no collective memory of the second intifada, which created very strong deterrence among the Palestinian leadership.
