USA mourns on the 15th anniversary of 9/11

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - America commemorated the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks Sunday with emotional services of remembrance in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania to honor those who perished in the worlds deadliest terror strikes. On September 11, 2001, 19 Al-Qaeda operatives crashed four passenger jets into the Twin Towers in Manhattan, the Pentagon and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania -- killing nearly 3,000 people and changing the world forever. This years anniversary comes with the United States locked in a bruising White House election battle between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, who both attended the New York service, although Clinton left early after feeling unwell.Even 15 years later, the long shadow cast by the attacks lives on in wars being fought today in Iraq and Afghanistan, and conflict tearing apart countries from Libya to Syria, allowing Al-Qaeda affiliates and the Islamic State (IS) terror group to breed and prosper.President Barack Obama said no words or deeds could ever truly erase the pain of loss, but urged Americans to stand true to the nations ideals and not allow groups like Al-Qaeda and IS to divide the country. It is so important today that we reaffirm our character as a nation, he told a remembrance service at the Pentagon. Our diversity, our patchwork heritage, is not a weakness. It is still and always will be one of our greatest strengths.- Emotion at Ground Zero -==========================In New York, relatives fought back tears, clasped onto each other and bowed their heads at the September 11 Memorial on the site of the destroyed World Trade Center, which was closed to the general public. The emotional service -- in the shadow of the newly built Freedom Tower -- observed six moments of silence to honor the four attacks and the moments each of the Twin Towers collapsed. Each year, family members spend hours reading out the names of all the dead at the memorial, an increasing number of them young adults who never or barely knew lost parents, uncles, aunts and grandparents.Mourners sobbed and laid flowers in the grooves of their loved ones names, carved into the walls of two reflecting pools in the footprint of the towers overlooked by the Freedom Tower, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. And New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced plans for a new monument in the Big Apple to honor the first responders and survivors.- Lone-wolf threat -====================The US government says the country is now better protected against a 9/11-style terror attack, but the new threat is the lone-wolf assailant. Our government has become pretty good at detecting something hatched from overseas, Homeland Secretary Jeh Johnson told Fox News.Where were challenged, however, is with the lone-wolf style attack, the self-radicalized actor. Terrorist organizations have the ability to (get) into our homeland through the internet and recruit and inspire. The United States, but more increasingly Europe, have been hit by such attacks, including the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and the 2015 San Bernardino killings in California.CIA chief John Brennan said the terror threat is diminished compared to 2001, including from the IS group, which he said is on the wane.It is now a failing organization, Brennan said speaking to CBS televisions Face the Nation program.- Clinton, Trump on 9/11 -==========================Well never forget the horror of September 11, 2001. Today, lets honor the lives and tremendous spirit of the victims and responders, tweeted Clinton, who was a US senator from New York at the time of the attacks. The former first lady left the ceremony at Ground Zero after becoming faint from the heat, according to her aides, as video footage showed her being helped, knees buckling, into her van by secret service agents. She was taken to her daughters Manhattan apartment to recover and emerged a couple of hours later feeling much better, according to her campaignTrump, meanwhile, called the anniversary a day of sadness and remembrance but also a day of resolve. It was the countrys solemn duty, he said in a statement, to work together as one nation to keep all of our people safe from an enemy that seeks nothing less than to destroy our way of life.George W. Bush, who was president at the time of the attacks, spent the morning at church in Dallas, Texas, his home state. He was due to attend the Dallas Cowboys home opener against the New York Giants, where he will take part in the ceremonial coin toss with NYPD officers who were at Ground Zero on 9/11.Sunday marks the start of the NFL season in the United States, and those attending the American football games and watching on television will watch video messages from both Obama and Bush. Some players in the predominately African American NFL joined US first responders and military personnel in pre-game tributes. But a protest over racial inequality and police brutality launched a few weeks ago by San Francisco 49ers player Colin Kaepernick has spread to other teams, including the Seattle Seahawks, with several players planning to link arms during the national anthem in a game that starts later Sunday.Players on the Kansas City Chiefs also linked arms in unity, including one who raised a clenched fist Sunday during The Star-Spangled Banner.

SEOUL (AFP) - North Korea has completed preparations for another nuclear test in a previously unused tunnel at its Punggye-ri site, South Koreas Yonhap news agency reported Tuesday. The North on Friday conducted its fifth and most powerful atomic test, just eight months after its previous one.We have detected signs that North Korea has finished preparations to conduct a nuclear test at any time in the third tunnel at its Punggye-ri test site, Yonhap quoted an unidentified Seoul government official as saying.Intelligence authorities in Seoul and Washington are keeping close tabs. The South Korean defence ministry could not immediately confirm the report.Yonhap did not indicate what activities had been detected at the test site in the northeast of the country, the venue for all five nuclear tests. In a statement hailing the success of its test on Friday, the North vowed to take further measures to increase its nuclear strike force in quality and in quantity. The yield from Fridays test was estimated at 10 kilotons, almost twice as much as the one Pyongyang conducted only eight months ago.The North also boasted that the test was of a nuclear warhead that could be mounted on a missile. The UN Security Council agreed Friday to start work on new measures -- even though five sets of UN sanctions since the first nuclear test in 2006 have failed to halt the Norths nuclear drive.

Morgan, Hales not available for Bangladesh tour due to security fears

Posted:

LONDON, Sept 11, 2016 (AFP) - England limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan and batsman Alex Hales have both made themselves unavailable for next months tour of Bangladesh, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on Sunday. The tour, which begins on September 30 and will include two Tests and three ODIs, had been called into question after an attack in July on a cafe in Dhaka in which 20 hostages were killed, including 18 foreigners.Morgan had already spelled out the reasons for his personal concerns about travelling following his previous experience of security alerts in both India and Bangladesh. And the ECB confirmed late Sunday that both Morgan, 30, and Hales, 27, had let England cricket chief Andrew Strauss know their decision this weekend.Whilst we understand and respect Eoin and Alexs decision, we are disappointed that they have made themselves unavailable for selection for the Bangladesh tour, Strauss said.We have had open and honest conversations with all the players about the security arrangements in Bangladesh and at this stage we are not expecting any other individuals to withdraw from the tour.Final selection for the Bangladesh tour, will now take place on Friday.Strauss added: As with all England overseas tours, the safety and security of players and staff is of the utmost importance to ECB.We will continue to monitor the situation in Bangladesh, take advice and consider the appropriate steps up to and throughout the five weeks we are on tour.Lancashire wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler will captain the one-day side in Morgans absence, the ECB said.Buttler, the vice-captain, has led England only once before in a Twenty20 international against Pakistan last winter.Following the July attacks the ECB sent an inspection team to Bangladesh led by their long-serving security chief Reg Dickason. After he reported back, the board confirmed last month that the tour, which is scheduled to run until November 1, would go ahead as planned.A thorough and detailed risk assessment was approved and accepted by the ECB Board and the England players and management have been fully briefed on all aspects of the safety and security arrangements, the ECB statement added.- Past scares impact Morgan -=============================Morgan explained last week his thinking had been influenced by a bomb exploding at a 2010 Indian Premier League match and the violent background to a brief spell in the 2013/14 Dhaka Premier Division. In 2010 we played an IPL game in Bangalore and a bomb went off in the ground. We immediately left for the airport. So that was an instance. Another one was (in) Bangladesh playing domestic cricket during political elections when things were incredibly violent. The Irishman added: I think ultimately, as Ive said before, as an individual you need to be comfortable within yourself to focus on cricket.Ive been to places before where things have become a distraction and its only been once or twice when securitys been a distraction and Ive told myself Id never put myself in that situation again.Test captain Alastair Cook is understood to have given a private assurance he will be on the tour, while coach Trevor Bayliss, who was on the Sri Lanka bus that came under armed attack in Lahore in 2009, has stated publicly he will travel to Bangladesh.

Stan Wawrinka wins 2016 US Open after beating struggling Djokovic

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Stan Wawrinka became the oldest US Open mens champion in 46 years when he defeated world number one Novak Djokovic to claim a third Grand Slam title on Sunday.Wawrinka, the 31-year-old third seed, triumphed 6-7 (1/7), 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 after almost four hours of high intensity tennis. He even held his nerve when the final threatened to erupt into controversy after Djokovic twice called medical timeouts in the fourth set.Wawrinka is the oldest winner of the mens tournament since 35-year-old Ken Rosewall in 1970 and the first over 30 to take the title since Pete Sampras in 2002.It was the Swiss players first New York title, following his breakthrough 2014 Australian Open triumph and 2015 Roland Garros crown. On both those occasions, Djokovic had been the fall-guy, losing in Melbourne in the quarter-finals and ending as runner-up in Paris.Djokovic, the 2011 and 2015 champion, had been seeking a third Slam of the year and 13th major of his career. But the 29-year-old Serb finished runner-up in New York for the fourth time after paying a heavy price for converting just three of 17 break points.Wawrinka, who had to save a match point to beat unheralded Dan Evans in the third round, committed 51 unforced errors but crucially smashed 46 winners past his opponent. The final started against a sombre but defiant background with Broadway star Norm Lewis delivering a stirring rendition of The Star Spangled Banner, a poignant performance on the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.Djokovic, playing in his 21st Grand Slam final and seventh in New York, was quickest out of the blocks. He broke for 2-0 having won the first point of the game with two extreme, against-the-odds retrievals.Trailing 2-5, Wawrinka, who had spent the best part of nine hours more than Djokovic getting to the final, saved two set points. The Serb was made to pay for his wastefulness as the Swiss suddenly found his range, breaking back in the ninth game off a Djokovic double fault. But Djokovic glided untroubled through the tie-break as Wawrinkas serve fell apart.- Wawrinka rallies -====================Wawrinka is used to chasing lost causes against Djokovic, coming back from losing the first set to win their 2014 Australian Open quarter-final and again at Roland Garros last year.Calling on that expertise, he broke for 3-1 in the second set, recovered from handing the advantage back in the seventh to level the final when Djokovic unleashed a wild forehand on set point in the 10th.Frustrated, Djokovic demolished his racquet, collecting a code violation from umpire Ali Nili.Wawrinka saved three break points in the opening game of the third set, which featured a 28-shot exchange, broke in the second and saved another break point in the next for a 3-0 lead. But at the sixth time of asking in the set, Djokovic clawed his way back with a break for 2-3.Wawrinka, however, kept up the attack and on set point in the 12th game slotted a backhand deep and into the corner which Djokovic could only push wide. The world number one looked spent. He appeared to start cramping in the fourth set as he quickly slipped 0-3 down.Much to Wawrinkas irritation, at 1-3 Djokovic called the trainer and took a medical timeout for treatment for blisters.Djokovic apologised, claiming he needed attention as he couldnt stand. At 2-5, the trainer reappeared but Wawrinka saw the job through leaving Djokovic to finish a Slam runner-up for the ninth time.

Clinton diagnosed with pneumonia, was dehydrated at 9/11 event: doctor

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is suffering from pneumonia and was overheated and dehydrated when she quickly left a 9/11 memorial ceremony in New York on Sunday, her doctor said. The incident at Ground Zero, in which the 68-year-old Clinton seemed to lose her footing as she was helped into her vehicle, sparked new questions about her health -- and offered Donald Trump a new opening to attack his White House rival.Clinton had been seeking to bounce back from a campaign blunder Friday, when she told donors that half of Trumps supporters belonged in a basket of deplorables -- so Sundays episode was certainly ill-timed.The former secretary of state spent 90 minutes at the high-profile ceremony in lower Manhattan, greeting some family members of those killed in the deadly terror strikes 15 years ago, her campaign said in a statement.During the ceremony, she felt overheated so departed to go to her daughters apartment, and is feeling much better, it added.Later, the campaign released a fresh statement from her personal doctor, Lisa Bardack, who revealed that Clinton had been diagnosed with pneumonia and was suffering from dehydration.Secretary Clinton has been experiencing a cough related to allergies. On Friday, during follow-up evaluation of her prolonged cough, she was diagnosed with pneumonia, Bardack said. She was put on antibiotics, and advised to rest and modify her schedule. While at this mornings event, she became overheated and dehydrated. I have just examined her and she is now re-hydrated and recovering nicely.A campaign aide said Clinton had been examined at her home in Chappaqua, New York, after she was forced to leave Ground Zero.- Stumble -===========A video posted on Twitter showed Clinton seeming unsteady as she waited to get into a black van to leave the emotional 9/11 service. She appeared to stumble as she was helped into the vehicle, and had to be held up on either side by members of her entourage. It was a humid day in New York, with temperatures around 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 Celsius).I didnt see anything unusual. What I can tell you is that many of us (had) a sigh of relief when a gust of wind would come by because it was incredibly stifling, Democratic Congressman Joe Crowley, who stood near Clinton for about an hour at the ceremony, told MSNBC.Clinton appeared better as she walked out of her daughter Chelseas home a few hours later, smiling for the media and posing for pictures with a young girl before departing for Chappaqua.Im feeling great, its a beautiful day in New York, Clinton said. But a senior campaign aide said a planned fundraising trip to California on Monday was currently in discussion.- Health issues? -==================Trump -- who also attended the 9/11 ceremony -- was uncharacteristically silent on Twitter about Clintons illness, as both candidates took a break from formal campaigning to mark the somber day of remembrance. But the businessman, his spokespeople and surrogates have promoted the idea in recent weeks that Clinton has serious health problems. The internet is awash with claims that she may have a brain tumor, Parkinsons or dementia.Trump, 70, has said Clinton is not strong enough to be president and that she lacks the mental and physical stamina to take on ISIS.The root of the claims lies in 2012, when Clinton was nearing the end of her stint as secretary of state. A stomach virus and dehydration prompted her to faint, causing what her doctor said was a concussion. They said they found a blood clot on the brain and Clinton temporarily suffered from double vision. She was later given the all-clear.The former first lady has dismissed conspiracy theories about her health and pointed to a letter from her doctor declaring her fit to serve as president.- Vitality and viability -============================Clintons illness is unlikely to be a turning point in the White House race, said Jennifer Lawless, a professor of government at American University in Washington. What the Clinton campaign needs to do over the course of the next several days is demonstrate her vitality and viability. She has to be at tons of events and seem very energetic, Lawless told AFP.Larry Sabato, a veteran political scientist at the University of Virginia, said Clintons team needs to release a full health record to put the story to rest.We really havent gotten very much, essentially a letter from her doctor, he told CNN, but added that Trump should be held to the same requirement.Clintons illness struck after she told a crowd at a fundraiser late Friday that to be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trumps supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic -- you name it.Trump and his supporters slammed the remarks. Clinton said she regretted saying half, but then listed a number of deplorable things about Trump.I wont stop calling out bigotry and racist rhetoric in this campaign, she said.A Washington Post-ABC News poll out Sunday -- conducted in the days before she made the remark -- shows Clinton leading Trump 46 percent to 41 percent among likely voters, with a 4.5 percentage-point margin of error.

Chelsea remain unbeaten after drawing with Swansea

Posted:

SWANSEA, United Kingdom (AFP) - Diego Costa scored twice, including an 81st-minute equaliser, as Antonio Conte maintained his unbeaten start to life as Chelsea manager in a 2-2 draw at Swansea City on Sunday. The irrepressible Costa levelled with a deflected but spectacular overhead bicycle kick after Branislav Ivanovics shot had been sent spinning in his direction. The goal, Costas fourth in as many games, spared Conte from his first loss in English football after two controversial Swansea goals in three second-half minutes had cancelled out Costas opener. Its a bit difficult to talk about the game because we lost two points, Conte told Sky Sports. Its a pity because when you have the possibility to kill the game, you must kill the game.Swansea manager Francesco Guidolin said: It is a good result against a very strong Chelsea team.Swanseas comeback marked an incredible turnaround for the Welsh side, who had been second-best against a Chelsea team seeking a win to join Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table. The visitors were made to pay for their string of misses in the 59th minute when a rare Swansea attack saw Modou Barrow cross for Gylfi Sigurdsson, who was tripped by Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.Courtois was booked and Sigurdsson converted the ensuing penalty himself.Just three minutes later, Gary Cahill was caught in possession by Leroy Fer 25 yards from the Chelsea goal.Television replays suggested the defender had been fouled, but Fer was allowed to advance before rolling the ball beneath Courtois. The Belgian goalkeeper scrambled back, but could not prevent the ball crossing the line.Costa first struck 18 minutes into a half of almost relentless Chelsea pressure after Swanseas defensive frailties were exposed.Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski elected not to collect a cross and Federico Fernandezs two poor headers failed to clear the danger.Oscar pounced on the loose ball and neatly teed up Costa to unleash an impressive curling finish from just inside the Swansea area.- Flying Fabianski -====================By that stage, Chelsea had already wasted at least two very good chances, Willians terrific shot stinging Fabianskis hands and the goalkeeper saving well from the Brazilians cross-shot.After taking the lead, the visitors remained equally impressive, with Fabianski saving well from Eden Hazard, who surged into a shooting position from just inside the Swansea half. Not until the 40th minute did Swansea have a real sight of goal when Fers drive through the middle saw the ball break to Sigurdsson, whose curling shot flew just beyond the left-hand post.Chelsea responded instantly and should have doubled their lead, with Costa missing a far easier opening than the one he had converted earlier, shooting wide of an open goal from a Willian corner.By that stage, Swansea manager Francesco Guidolin had already abandoned his game-plan of playing with three defenders, changing to a back four and hooking the unfortunate Neil Taylor.I chose to change something and I am sorry with Neil Taylor, said Guidolin. He is a good guy. He understood. At that moment my team needed a reaction and I had to change something. The new formation brought no immediate change in fortune, with Jordi Amat joining fellow centre-back Fernandez in earning a yellow card for a foul on Costa.Amats feud with the Spain international striker might have seen him dismissed in the minutes that followed. The two Swansea goals followed in quick succession. As Chelsea pushed for a response, Hazard inexplicably pulled out of a challenge with Fabianski on the edge of the Swansea area, when he looked capable of equalising.Moments later, Oscars 20-yard shot was superbly saved by the flying Fabianski.Kyle Naughton denied Costa a far-post header from Hazards chipped cross, while Oscars low drive narrowly missed the target. After Chelseas second goal, only a brilliant Fabianski save denied Costa a hat-trick and the visitors all three points.
