SAINT PETERSBURG (AFP) - US Open champion Stan Wawrinka and Czech Tomas Berdych both cruised into the Saint Petersburg Open semi-finals on Friday.Top seed Wawrinka beat Serb Viktor Troicki 7-5, 6-2 to set up a meeting with Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut for a place in the final.Third seed Berdych, currently ninth in the race to the London ATP Finals -- which features the years top eight players -- also advanced past Italian veteran Paolo Lorenzi 6-4, 6-3.Wawrinka, the world number three, recorded his sixth win over seventh seed Troicki in as many meetings, breaking in the 12th game for a one-set lead. Wawrinka, 31, underlined his supremacy on the hardcourt surface in the second with two more breaks to close out in 64 minutes.Earlier Bautista Agut, 28, rallied from a set down to see off Portuguese eighth-seed Joao Sousa 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.Hes a great player, a great fighter, said Wawrinka of his next opponent who won the last of his four ATP titles on hardcourt in Sofia last February. He likes this kind of surface and Im looking forward to an interesting match, the Swiss added.Berdych, who has won 12 ATP titles most recently in Stockholm and Shenzhen last year, took the opening set in 35 minutes with a break in the 10th game, breaking early in the second. My game is improving day by day, warned Berdych, who next plays German teenager Alexander Zverev, who whipped home favourite Mikhail Youzhny, the 2004 champion, 6-2, 6-2.The match was much harder than the scoreline shows, Zverev, 19, insisted.I played really tough matches with Berdych earlier this year. But if I play like I did today I think Ive a good chance tomorrow (Saturday).

Golf: Johnson leads Tour Championship as injured Day withdraws

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Dustin Johnson edged closer to the USPGA Tours $10 million FedEx Cup playoff prize Friday, firing a three-under par 67 to seize a one-stroke lead in the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta, Georgia.US Open champion Johnson, who arrived at East Lake Golf Club atop the playoff standings after his win at the BMW Championship two weeks ago, fired five birdies with two bogeys for a seven-under total of 133.He was one shot in front of fellow American Kevin Chappell, who started the day in a three-way tie for the lead with Johnson and Hideki Matsuyama and signed for a second-round 68 for 134.It was three shots back to Matsuyama, who shot a one-over par 71, and Kevin Kisner (70) on 137.World number one Jason Days season ended in disappointing fashion as the Australian walked off before completing the eighth hole with back pain. Its the same injury that forced Day out of the final round of the BMW Championship, although he had voiced cautious optimism that his back would allow him to challenge for the win this week.A statement from Days management team described the injury as a strained ligament in his lower right back with a muscle spasm and his withdrawal as a precautionary measure. The top five players in the playoff standings coming into the $8.5 million season finale can each claim the bonus with a victory.Anyone lower in the standings must win and count on those top players finishing down the leaderboard -- something that was looking less and less likely in Johnsons case.Johnson, already the front-runner for player of the year honors, is seeking his fourth title of 2016.I felt like I played really, really solid today and just didnt really get a lot out of it, Johnson said. I had some close looks that I didnt make.Still, obviously three-under is a great score around here. Im never going to be upset with that.Johnson had back-to-back birdies at the fifth and sixth and again at 10 and 11 before is first bogey of the day at the 12th. He nabbed the first birdie of the day at the par-four 16th, hitting his approach from 147 yards to 12 feet and draining the putt. After giving a shot back at 17, Johnson saved par from six feet at the last, where Chappell missed a chance to pull level.Chappell, seeking his first PGA Tour title, had three birdies in a row from the sixth through eighth. He bogeyed the 11th, but stayed steady coming in to keep himself in contention.Englands Paul Casey, Northern Irelands Rory McIlroy and American Ryan Moore were tied for fifth on 138.Scotlands Russell Knox carded the low round of the day of 66 to join South Koreas Kim Si-Woo and American Justin Thomas on 139, while defending champion Jordan Spieth was in a group on 140 that also included Australian Adam Scott.World number seven Bubba Watson, angling for the final captains pick spot on the US Ryder Cup team, posted an unimpressive 73 that left him tied for 25th.

Football: Rampant Dortmund win again

BERLIN (AFP) - Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored for the fifth time in five Bundesliga games this season as Borussia Dortmund beat Freiburg 3-1 on Friday to move level on points with league leaders Bayern Munich.Aubameyang tapped in after fine work by livewire Ousmane Dembele to give Thomas Tuchels side the lead on the stroke of half-time at the Signal Iduna Park.Polish international right-back Lukasz Piszczek doubled Dortmunds advantage early in the second half after Caglar Soyuncu had turned a Gonzalo Castro cutback into his path.Maximilian Philipp got one back for the visitors with a good finish on the hour mark but Raphael Guerreiro, a second-half substitute for Mario Goetze, secured the points in stoppage time at the end of a fine move.Dortmund, 5-1 winners at Wolfsburg in midweek, have won their last four matches in all competitions and scored 20 goals in the process since a 1-0 loss to RB Leipzig a fortnight ago. They trail Bayern on goal difference before Carlo Ancelottis side visit winless Hamburg on Saturday bidding to maintain their perfect start to the season.Cologne can also climb back up above Dortmund if they can inflict a first defeat on newly-promoted Leipzig on Sunday.

Boxing: Fury 'medically unfit' to defend title: management

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Britains controversial world heavyweight champion Tyson Furys title rematch with Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko has been called off for a second time as the titleholder is medically unfit to fight, his camp said. The 28-year-old champion -- who sensationally took the title off long-time holder Klitschko last year -- had already postponed the fight once this year because of an ankle injury. It is with the deepest regret that we have to announce that the world heavyweight championship rematch between Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko, scheduled to take place on the 29th October 2016 at the Manchester Arena, will not be going ahead, a statement read.Tyson has, this week, been declared medically unfit to fight. The statement did not elaborate on his medical problem, only saying that he would need to undergo medical treatment before resuming training.Medical specialists have advised that the condition is too severe to allow him to participate in the rematch and that he will require treatment before going back into the ring, the statement went on.Tyson will now immediately undergo the treatment he needs to make a full recovery.Tyson is understandably devastated by the development. The title fight seemed to have been cursed from the outset with the ankle problem, then it was revealed Fury had failed a dope test and would have a hearing in front of the United Kingdom Anti-Doping (UKAD) panel -- although Englands High Court ruled that it should be delayed until November so the bout could go ahead. The two fighters didnt even get to meet at the press conference earlier this month as Furys car apparently had broken down.Fury claimed a shock win over Klitschko to take the World Boxing Association, World Boxing Organization and International Boxing Federation belts in a points decision in Duesseldorf last November. The Englishman agreed to face Klitschko again, which meant he was stripped of the IBF title for failing to face its mandatory challenger. After the original July bout was called off, it emerged that UKAD had charged Fury over a urine sample taken in February 2015, and his cousin Hughie with a doping offence. It was alleged the sample -- taken nine months before his defeat of Klitschko -- contained traces of the banned substance nandrolone.Fury was provisionally suspended, but that ban has since been lifted.

Spanish court reopens Neymar fraud case

Posted:

Madrid (AFP) - Barcelona superstar Neymars troubles with the Spanish authorities continued when a fraud case against the player and his father was reopened on Friday following a successful appeal by Spanish prosecutors, a court filing showed. In July a judge ruled that irregularities in the Brazilians 2013 transfer to Barcelona were detected, but said it was an issue for a civil court, not a criminal court to settle. However, prosecutors successfully argued the player and his father were aware of potentially fraudulent dealings between Barcelona and his former club Santos to the detriment of DIS, a Brazilian investment company who owned 40 percent of the players sporting rights at the time of the transfer.Spains National Court fully overturned Judge Jose de la Matas decision two months ago, allowing the case to proceed. The decision is another blow to the image of the Spanish champions and Neymar, who had hoped to bring an end to the murky affair when the club agreed to pay a 5.5-million-euro ($6.2 million) fine in a deal with prosecutors in June to settle a separate case and ensure the club avoided trial on tax-evasion charges over the transfer.FC Barcelona expresses its disagreement with the reasoning included in this decision, the club said in a statement. The investigating judge, who initially had agreed to dismiss the case against all those investigated, must now reopen the case and end up holding a trial. In the trial FC Barcelona will maintain the version of events it has always defended throughout the process and prove the innocence of all those investigated.Neymar, 24, his father (also Neymar), Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu and his predecessor Sandro Rosell were all called to testify in the case in February.Barcelona originally published the fee in the transfer as 57.1 million euros, with 40 million euros of that given to the players family. But Spanish authorities believe the true transfer figure was at least 83 million euros because of a series of extra agreements tied to the transfer between the two clubs.Santos received just 17.1 million, 6.8 million euros of which went to DIS.DIS has claimed it was cheated of its real share firstly because part of the transfer fee was concealed by Barcelona and Santos. Moreover, DIS also believes a pre-contract agreement between Neymar and Barca impeded other clubs from making offers for the player, affecting the value of the transfer fee.- Accustomed to upheavalNeymar is far from the only Barca star to find himself embroiled in problems with the Spanish authorities.Five-time World Player of the Year Lionel Messi and his father were given 21-month jail sentences in July for tax fraud relating to the players image rights.Messi is appealing the verdict, but the prison sentences are likely to be suspended as is common in Spain for first offences for non-violent crimes carrying a sentence of less than two years. If there is one player used to dealing with different situations and one team used to dealing with different situations, it is Barcelona, said Barca coach Luis Enrique on Friday. All the players and their coach are used to dealing with things that have nothing to do with football.Barcas Argentine defender Javier Mascherano also agreed a one-year suspended sentence with authorities for tax fraud earlier this year. The off-field upheaval hasnt affected Barca or Neymar with the signing an undoubted sporting success as he has formed one of the most fearsome strike partnerships of all-time with Messi and Luis Suarez.Barca have won back-to-back Spanish league and Cup doubles with the trio and the Champions League in 2015.Neymar signed a bumper new deal with the club to extend his contract until 2021 in July despite admitting last week he held talks with Paris Saint-Germain amidst interest from a host of top European clubs in luring him away. And he also handled the pressure of being Brazils poster boy for the Rio Olympics by delivering the hosts first ever football gold medal with a goal and winning penalty in the final against Germany last month.

NFL holds no appeal for Man United super-fan Bolt

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - The bruising NFL isnt on Usain Bolts post-athletics agenda, but Jamaicas sprint superstar says hed answer a call from his beloved Manchester United in a heartbeat.Bolt, who capped his glittering Olympic career with a third straight sprint treble in Rio last month, is on a media blitz in the United States, and spoke Friday to Outside the Lines.Bolt said hes seen enough of the NFL to know he isnt interested in pursuing the gridiron game after he hangs up his sprint spikes after next years World Championships.Im not really a contact sports kind of guy, Bolt said. While Bolts speed and height have prompted speculation as to what kind of wide receiver he might make, he said his preference would be to run the long passing route and just keep going rather than be a target of the punishing hits of the NFL.Too much pain, Ive seen it, he said.Bolt does harbor one non-athletics sporting dream, however, and if Premier League powerhouse Manchester United called he would be on his way.If they called me right now to say we need you right now Im on the next plane to England, he said.

France turns to Germany for contract in assault rifles

PARIS (AFP) - The French military is to buy German assault rifles to replace its venerable French-made service weapon, the FAMAS, the governments military procurement agency announced on Friday.Heckler und Koch will provide French troops with its HK 416 F model from 2017 under a 10-year supply contract, the DGA said.Press reports put the value of the deal at around 300 million euros ($337 million). The contract contributes to the further strengthening of the solid ties between Germany and France in defence and in the armaments industry in particular, the DGA said. The HK 416 F won against four other proposals after bidding was opened across Europe, it said. The contract provides for the supply of 100,000 weapons, accessories and ammunition, as well as training.Heckler und Koch have already manufactured 60,000 of the weapons, mainly for the Norwegian armed forces. The model, which has a rate of fire of up to 900 rounds per minute and an effective firing range of 300 metres (1,000 feet), is already in use with the French air force and special forces. The FAMAS -- the acronym for Fusil dAssaut de la Manufacture dArmes de Saint-Etienne -- was designed more than four decades ago.The four other assault rifles competing with the HK 416 F were the ARX160, made by Beretta of Italy; the MCX, manufactured by the German-Swiss firm Sig Sauer; the VHS2, made by the Croatian firm HS Produkt; and the SCAR, manufactured by Belgiums FN Herstal.

Rooney's place not sacrosanct, says Mourinho

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United captain Wayne Rooneys place in the starting line-up is not a cast iron certainty, said club manager Jose Mourinho on Friday. The 31-year-old England skipper -- who on Thursday had said he didnt pay any attention to outside criticism of his form -- has failed to sparkle and was anonymous in the two Premier League defeats United suffered last week.Mourinho, who himself has been subjected to criticism after United slumped to three successive defeats last week -- his worst run since 2002 -- would not, unlike his predecessor Louis van Gaal, guarantee Rooney a starting place.Wayne is the captain of the club, the manager and the players -- he is trusted by the players, he is trusted by myself and he represents the club in a fantastic way as a player and person and what is now socially, said Mourinho.Football is a different story.Football everyone is the same and if he has to go on the bench, he goes on the bench. If he has to stay at home, he stays at home, but that doesnt mean that you dont trust him or you have a problem (with him). Not at all.We have no problems. He is our captain but, of course, no privilege, he is like anyone else.Mourinho, though, believes that Rooneys form or certainly morale has dipped since he was heavily slammed for his performance in the 2018 World Cup qualifier with Slovakia earlier this month which England won 1-0 with a late goal.Honestly, I think there was a Wayne before the Slovakia-England and a Wayne after the Slovakia-England, said Mourinho. And I am not blaming Sam (Allardyce, the England manager), not at all.I am blaming the people that after the England-Slovakia was, in my opinion, too strong with somebody that is a very important player in the history of English football, is the captain of England, is the record of goals, is almost the record of matches.I think it was too much but I still think, that a big boy like he is, he has to face it in a strong way.Mourinho, who righted the ship slightly with a League Cup win over third-tier Northampton Town on Wednesday, said Rooney had faced down his critics before.Thats what he tries every time. When he is on the pitch, he gives 100 percent. Always, always, remarked Mourinho.

President Barack Obama gives advice to candidate Hillary Clinton

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President Barack Obama had a bit of advice Friday for Hillary Clinton, his Democratic Partys White House nominee, who soon faces Republican rival Donald Trump in the first presidential debate.Asked what suggestions he might offer Clinton ahead of the debate Monday, the president told ABC News: Be yourself and explain what motivates you.He added that Clinton is motivated by a deep desire to make things better for people. The nationally televised debate Monday, pitting the two major-party presidential candidates in a tight race just six weeks ahead of the November 8 election, is expected to smash audience records. Each word, gesture and look will be parsed minutely. In the ABC interview, Obama praised Clinton, a veteran politician who has so far failed to inspire much voter enthusiasm.Ive gotten to know Hillary and seen her work and seen her in tough times and in good times, he said of his former secretary of state. She is in this for the right reasons. No woman has ever been elected US president, Obama noted, so she is having to break down some barriers. There is a level of mistrust and a caricature of her, he added, that doesnt jibe with who I know, this person that cares deeply about kids.

Guardiola thinks he's 'God', snipes Toure's agent

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Four-time African Player of the Year Yaya Toures chances of ever playing for Manchester City again diminished further Friday after his fiery agent launched another withering attack on club manager Pep Guardiola.Guardiola had said earlier this week Toure would not play for the club until his agent Dimitri Seluk apologised for accusing the Spaniard of humiliating the 33-year-old Ivorian midfielder after omitting him from the Champions League squad.Rather than back down Seluk -- who is regarded as a father figure by Toure and by his elder brother Celtic defender Kolo Toure -- launched into Guardiola on the BBCs World Football Podcast.Pep Guardiola -- he thinks only about himself. He thinks he is already God, said the Ukrainian. He won with Barcelona many titles but Yaya also won the same titles with Barcelona (Toure was in fact sold in 2010 and Guardiola stayed till 2012 accruing more silverware).Pep thinks now he has won everything and he can do what he wants.Seluk, who numbers on his client roster largely eastern European or African players plying their trade in eastern Europe, said Guardiola had treated long serving City players with total disrespect. For me, very strange things (have happened) in Manchester City because Yaya played with them many years, (Joe) Hart played with them many years, I dont know, (Vincent) Kompany played many years, and (in) comes a new coach and says, Okay, these players out like dogs, said Seluk.Toure, who announced his retirement from international duty moments before Guardiola revealed he was out in the cold, has not figured in a single City match-day squad since Seluk made his initial remarks. The day after that, his agent spoke and in that moment, Yaya is out, Guardiola told a press conference on Tuesday.Unless Mr Dimitri Seluk comes back to the press or to his friends in the media -- because he hasnt the courage to call me, he goes to the media -- and apologises to Manchester City first of all, then his team-mates and afterwards the trainer. When that happens, Yaya will be part of the group and he will have the chance to play.Toure, who is in the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium, has featured just once for City since Guardiolas arrival. He played the full 90 minutes of their Champions League play-off second-leg victory over Steaua Bucharest in August.

Ted Cruz, once a bitter rival, endorses Donald Trump

Posted:

WASHINGTON, Sept 23, 2016 (AFP) - Two months after his refusal to endorse Donald Trumps presidential candidacy prompted outrage at the Republican National Convention, Senator Ted Cruz said Friday that he would vote for his former bitter primary rival. After many months of careful consideration, of prayer and searching my own conscience, I have decided that on Election Day, I will vote for the Republican nominee, Donald Trump, the Texas senator wrote in a statement posted on Facebook.A year ago, I pledged to endorse the Republican nominee, and I am honoring that commitment, he added. And if you dont want to see a Hillary Clinton presidency, I encourage you to vote for him.Cruzs move represents a dramatic turnaround after a primary campaign during which the two candidates traded increasingly personal insults.Dismissing Cruzs early overtures, Trump had attacked the Texas senator, dubbing him Lyin Ted and suggesting he wasnt eligible to be president because he was born in Canada (most experts say that he was eligible since his mother was American).Trump also speculated that Cruzs father had some connection to Lee Harvey Oswald, the man who killed former president John F. Kennedy, and insinuated that Cruzs wife Heidi was involved in corruption. At the nadir of their confrontation, Trump tweeted an unflattering picture of Heidi Cruz next to a photo of his own former model wife Melania, along with the text, The images are worth a thousand words.Positioning himself as the true conservative alternative to Trump, Cruz responded by calling the real estate billionaire utterly amoral, and a narcissist at a level I dont think this countrys ever seen.He dropped out of the primary race in May.During the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, when many expected Cruz to endorse Trump, he told delegates instead to stand and speak and vote your conscience amid boos from the convention floor.Cruzs backing now could help Trump shore up support from Republicans who have long suspected the candidates conservative credentials, including the evangelical voters who form the core of Cruzs electorate.Trump responded to Cruzs endorsement -- three days before Trumps crucial first debate with Democratic nominee Clinton -- saying he was greatly honored. We have fought the battle and he was a tough and brilliant opponent, the Republican nominee said in a statement. I look forward to working with him for many years to come in order to make America great again.Cruzs backing comes after the two camps showed some signs of reconciliation. Trumps running mate Mike Pence spoke with Cruz several times in recent weeks and Trump has hired several Cruz allies, including Kellyanne Conway to be his campaign manager. The endorsement may also be calculated to help Cruzs chances for reelection in 2018. He faces a possible Senate primary challenge from Texas Representative Michael McCaul, the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. The move might also backfire. Steve Deace, an influential conservative radio host, tweeted that Cruzs endorsement of Trump is the worst political miscalculation of my lifetime. I hope I am wrong. The people will decide that.
