Oil prices up ahead of US stockpiles data, Fed meeting

Posted:

SINGAPORE (AFP) - Oil prices rose in Asia Wednesday as traders awaited the release of US energy stockpiles data and a US central bank decision on interest rates. The first crude shipment from Libya in two years had no immediate impact on prices a week before OPEC producers and Russia meet in Algeria to discuss ways to stabilise prices. At around 0240 GMT, the US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for November delivery, a new contract, was 77 cents higher at $44.82 and Brent for November was up 59 cents at $46.47.An oil tanker left the Libyan port of Ras Lanouf for Italy on Tuesday, in the first shipment since late 2014 when fighting erupted over control of the oil crescent, an official said in Tripoli. The amount of oil coming out of Libya is fairly limited so it wont have a material impact on crude prices today, Singapore-based OANDA senior market analyst Jeffrey Halley told AFP.He said the shipment was meant to have gone out last week but was delayed because of fighting at the port. This is indicative of the unpredictability of Libyan oil production because the fighting means that we dont know how sustained their output can be, he added. He said the two factors being closely watched this week are the Federal Reserves decision on interest rates and stockpile numbers to be released by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).A move by the Feds policy-setting committee to raise interest rates will likely boost the dollar and make oil more expensive for holders of other currencies, denting demand and prices. Most analysts, however, expect officials to keep borrowing costs at current levels. We expect the (policy board) to keep rates unchanged this meeting, Singapores United Overseas Bank said in a note. But it said details of the meeting and a news conference by Fed chair Janet Yellen will be closely scrutinised for hints of the next rate move.Analysts also expect the weekly US commercial crude inventories to be released by the EIA later Wednesday to show an increase, which would further add to oversupply concerns. The OPEC producers group and Russia will meet in Algeria next week to discuss ways to stabilise prices, which may include a deal to freeze or cut output, although there are conflicting signals such an agreement can be reached.

Football: Fabregas downs Leicester, Everton crash out

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Cesc Fabregas made an emphatic point to Chelsea manager Antonio Conte as his double sealed a 4-2 win at Leicester, while Everton and Bournemouth suffered shock third-round exits from the English Football League Cup on Tuesday.Fabregas has been limited to three substitute appearances in the Premier League since Conte took charge over the summer, but the Spain midfielder proved he can still be a game-changer with an influential display capped by the decisive two goals in extra-time.I was happy to play from the start Hopefully this will shut up a few journalists talking rubbish all the time, said Fabregas, who has been linked with a move away from Chelsea.Elsewhere, second-tier Norwich spoiled Evertons impressive start to the season and inflicted Ronald Koemans first defeat as Toffees boss with a 2-0 win at Goodison Park.Bournemouth were the other top-flight casualties as second-tier Preston won 3-2 thanks to a hat-trick from Denmark striker Simon Makienok. At the King Power Stadium, Shinji Okazaki put Premier League champions Leicester ahead in the 17th minute when the Japan striker punished terrible Chelsea defending to head home from close range.Okazaki followed his first goal since March with a second in the 34th minute.Gary Cahill reduced the deficit on the stroke of half-time, the defender heading home after being left unmarked at the far post from a Fabregas corner. The Blues equalised four minutes after the interval through Cesar Azpilicuetas blistering long-range effort.Leicester had to play extra-time with 10 men after Marcin Wasilewskis 89th minute dismissal for elbowing Diego Costa and Fabregas made them pay, finishing a flowing move in the 92nd minute and drilling home again two minutes later.Everton are second in the Premier League but Koeman made six changes and his stand-ins were brushed aside by promotion-chasing Norwich. The Canaries went ahead when former Everton striker Steven Naismith slipped as he went to shoot and inadvertently lobbed the ball into the net.Josh Murphys superb strike from the edge of the area in the 74th minute completed the upset.I cant criticise the players. We played well but werent clinical enough. The difference was Norwich were clinical with their two chances, Koeman said.At Dean Court, Makienok, who hadnt scored in his previous 19 appearances, gave Preston the lead in the 10th minute before Bournemouth equalised through Lewis Grabbans 53rd minute penalty.Dan Gosling put the hosts ahead from close range in the 76th minute, only for Makienok to force extra-time in the 85th minute and then win it for Simon Graysons men in the 111th minute.Lucas Perezs first goals for Arsenal inspired a 4-0 rout of second-tier Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who has never won the League Cup, made 11 changes from the team that thrashed Hull on Saturday and the understudies went ahead in the 23rd minute through a long-range effort from Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka.Spanish striker Perez, who arrived from Deportivo La Coruna on transfer-deadline day, opened his Arsenal account in his third appearance with a 60th-minute penalty after a foul on Chuba Akpom.Perez got his second in the 71st minute and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain got Arsenals fourth in stoppage time.It was a motivated team against us and we had a complete performance. The speed and movement of our play was fantastic, Wenger purred.Liverpool, last years beaten finalists, remain on course for a return to Wembley after a 3-0 win against Championship side Derby at the iPro Stadium.Estonia centre-back Ragnar Klavan took advantage of poor Derby defending to fire home in the 24th minute.Philippe Coutinho doubled Liverpools lead in the 50th minute and Divock Origi put the result beyond doubt four minutes later.Newcastle defeated Championship rivals Wolves 2-0, Leeds beat fellow second-tier side Blackburn 1-0, while Reading won 2-1 in another all-Championship clash at Brighton.

Football: Dortmund rout Wolfsburg to go top in Germany

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck twice on Tuesday as Borussia Dortmund romped to another big win with a 5-1 victory at VfL Wolfsburg to provisionally top the German Bundesliga.Having hammered both Legia Warsaw and Darmstadt 6-0 in their previous matches, Thomas Tuchels Dortmund handed out another drubbing with Gonzalo Castro setting up two of their goals.Despite going 2-0 up early on, we were still made to suffer, but we got a grip and took our chances, said Tuchel. Its an unbelievable result, which we worked hard for, and were very happy. The thrashing left Dortmund top on goals scored, with nine points from a possible 12, but they will lose the lead on Wednesday when Bayern Munich host Hertha Berlin. The only teams still with 100% records meet at Munichs Allianz Arena as Hertha chase their first league win in Bavaria since 1977. It was another bad night for Wolfsburg, who have won only once in four games so far, and new signing Mario Gomez. The Germany striker has yet to score since joining from Fiorentina and was repeatedly denied by Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki. Our conversion of chances wasnt good enough, we had five top chances in the first-half, Gomez told Sky.Im here to score goals and the fact that it didnt work out again makes me sorry for the fans.Dortmund needed just four minutes to take the lead at the Volkswagen Arena when centre-back Marc Bartra threaded the ball through the Wolfsburg defence.Portugal midfielder Raphael Guerreiro sprinted onto the perfect pass and drilled his shot inside the near post.Dortmund doubled their lead on 17 minutes when Aubameyang looped his shot over Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels. But Wolfsburg dragged their way back into the match.Burki blocked left-back Ricardo Rodriguezs powerfully struck free-kick with half-time approaching and then Wolfsburg deservedly pulled a goal back just after the break.Moments after Gomez was again denied by Burkis point-blank save, Daniel Didavi met Paul Seguins superb cross and drilled his shot just inside the near post on 53 minutes. But Dortmund hit their third five minutes later when Castro pulled two defenders out of position to allow winger Ousmane Dembele a simple tap-in.Castro then sprinted into the area and squared to Aubameyang, who slid his shot inside the far post on 62 minutes, before Lukasz Piszczek added Dortmunds fifth with a powerful header. There were nervous moments before kick-off in Wolfsburg due to an announcement telling fans and players to urgently leave the stadium, but it was a false alarm.Eintracht Frankfurt moved up to fourth with their third win from four games as defender David Abraham and Bastian Oczipka netted in their 2-0 victory at Ingolstadt.Newly promoted Freiburg inflicted a third straight defeat on Hamburg, who are third from bottom, as ex-Bayern Munich striker Nils Petersen scored the only goal of the game.Hoffenheim picked up a fourth draw after their Croatia striker Andrej Kramarics opener was cancelled out by Darmstadts Denys Oliinyk in the 92nd minute. On Wednesday, unbeaten RB Leipzig host Champions League side Borussia Moenchengladbach.Schalke 04 are desperate for points at home to Cologne after three straight defeats have left them second from bottom.Bottom side Werder Bremen host Mainz having sacked coach Viktor Skripnik on Sunday after three straight defeats.

Israel can't permanently occupy Palestinian land: Obama

Posted:

NEW YORK (Agencies) - Both sides would benefit if Israel recognized it cannot permanently occupy Palestinian land and if Palestinians rejected incitement and recognized Israels legitimacy, US President Barack Obama told the United Nations on Tuesday.Obamas efforts to bring about an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement have failed over the nearly eight years he has been in the White House, with the latest push by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry collapsing in 2014.U.S. officials have held out the possibility Obama could lay out the rough outlines of a deal - parameters in diplomatic parlance - after the Nov. 8 presidential election and before he leaves office in January, but many analysts doubt this would have much effect.Surely Israelis and Palestinians will be better off if Palestinians reject incitement and recognize the legitimacy of Israel ...(and if) Israel recognizes that it cannot permanently occupy and settle Palestinian land, Obama said.Speaking at the General Assembly annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations for the last time as president, Obama also said Russia was trying to recover lost glory through force. He warned Russia that if it continues to interfere in the affairs of its neighbors, it may be popular at home, it may fuel nationalist fervor for a time, but over time it is also going to diminish its stature and make its borders less secure.Russia annexed Ukraines Crimean peninsula in 2014 after months of protests in Kiev ousted pro-Moscow Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich. On the international dispute over the South China Sea, Obama said: A peaceful resolution of disputes offered by law will mean far greater stability then the militarization of a few rocks and reefs.China claims almost all of the South China Sea, through which ships carrying about $5 trillion in trade pass every year. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims in the sea, which is also believed to be rich in energy resources and fish stocks. In July, an arbitration court in The Hague said Chinas claims to the waterway were invalid, in a case was brought by the Philippines. Beijing has refused to recognize the ruling.

Ban Ki-moon accuses Syrian government of killing civilians

Posted:

NEW YORK (Agencies) - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has accused the Syrian government of killing the most civilians during the countrys five-year war and said powerful patrons that keep feeding the war machine also have blood on their hands. In his final address to an annual gathering of world leaders at the UN on Tuesday, Ban said the Syrian government continues to barrel bomb neighbourhoods and systematically torture thousands of detainees.Speaking after the Syrian government declared the US-Russian ceasefire over and resumed air strikes, Ban denounced the bombing of a humanitarian aid convoy headed for Aleppo in strong terms, his voice tense with anger.Just when we think it cannot get any worse, the bar of depravity sinks lower, Ban said in his last speech as leader of the organisation after a decade in the job, much of it preoccupied with Syria. The humanitarians delivering lifesaving aid were heroes, he added. Those who bombed them were cowards. The air strike hit a 31-truck convoy late on Monday, killing as many as 12 people. The UN suspended all further aid convoy movements as an immediate security measure.David Swanson, a spokesman from the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Aid, said the airstrike was a devastating blow for the Syrian people. In a statement, Syrias Foreign Ministry snapped back, condemning Bans address and saying he has deviated from its role in finding just solutions for international problems. It said the Syrian people possessed the right to self-determination and do not need Bans advice. It added that the international body had failed to resolve any conflicts during Bans era.In his speech, Ban also expressed regret for sexual abuse by UN peacekeepers in Central African Republic and an outbreak of cholera in Haiti. He said these two matters had tarnished the reputation of the United Nations and, far worse, traumatised many people we serve. The United Nations currently has 106,000 troops and police serving in 16 peacekeeping missions. It assumed authority from African Union troops in September 2014.Protectors must never become predators, he said.

UN suspends Syria aid convoys after deadly strike

Posted:

ALEPPO (AFP) - The United Nations suspended all humanitarian convoys in Syria on Tuesday following a deadly air strike on aid trucks, as fighting intensified after the regime declared an end to a week-long truce. Both Syria and Russia denied they were behind the raid on the convoy near northern city Aleppo, which the Red Cross said killed around 20 civilians including an employee of the Syrian Red Crescent.Air raids and shelling meanwhile pounded key battlefronts across the country -- dimming hopes that the fraught ceasefire brokered by Moscow and Washington could be revived.Key players including the United States and Russia were meeting in New York Tuesday in an effort to salvage the peace process, which US Secretary of State John Kerry had warned could be the last chance to end Syrias civil war.Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov opened a meeting of the 23-nation International Syria Support Group (ISSG) in New York, where world leaders have gathered for the UN General Assembly.UN chief Ban Ki-moon opened the assembly debate with a call to end the fighting in Syria.I appeal to all those with influence to end the fighting and get talks started, Ban said.Mondays strike on the aid convoy provoked outrage from UN officials, with aid chief Stephen OBrien warning that if deliberate it would amount to a war crime. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said Monday nights raid destroyed at least 18 of 31 vehicles, as well as a Red Crescent warehouse in Orum al-Kubra in Syrias Aleppo province.Much of the aid was destroyed, the IFRC said in a statement, stressing that the attack deprives thousands of civilians of much-needed food and medical assistance.Omar Barakat, who headed the local Red Crescent branch, was wounded in the strike and later died, IFRC spokesman Benoit Carpentier told reporters in Geneva.UN humanitarian agency OCHA said that the movements of all aid convoys in Syria had been suspended as an immediate security measure after the raid. The attack marked a very, very dark day for humanitarians in Syria and indeed across the world, OCHA spokesman Jens Laerke said, adding that it was paramount that we are able to establish the facts through an independent investigation.A Syrian military source denied any regime involvement, telling state media: There is no truth to media reports that the Syrian army targeted a convoy of humanitarian aid in Aleppo province. The Russian defence ministry also said that both its forces and the Syrian air force did not conduct any strikes against the UN aid convoy. The strike came just a few hours after the Syrian army announced the end of the truce on Monday night, accusing rebels of failing to commit to a single element of the US-Russia deal.Heavy fighting almost immediately resumed, with activists and AFP correspondents on the ground in Syria reporting bombardments overnight and on Tuesday in several areas. In the battleground city of Aleppo, air raids and artillery fire hit rebel-held districts until approximately 2:00 am (2300 GMT Monday), an AFP correspondent said.Residents spent the night huddled in their apartments sharing news about the collapsing truce via text messages and heard loud intermittent booms on Tuesday morning. At least 39 civilians were killed in overnight bombardment of Aleppo and the surrounding province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said, and fresh clashes erupted on the citys southern edges. In the week after the truce was declared on September 12, only 27 civilians were killed as fighting dropped significantly across the country. In the northwestern province of Idlib Tuesday, activist Nayef Mustafa said planes circled over the opposition-held town of Salqin. Its calm now, but there was machinegun fire by military aircraft overnight, Mustafa told AFP. The ceasefire has collapsed and people are getting ready to be hit by barrel bombs. At least four air strikes hit the central rebel-held town of Talbisseh on Tuesday morning after artillery fire throughout the night, activist Hassaan Abu Nuh said. Kerry and Lavrov had negotiated the truce deal earlier this month, hoping to put an end to more than five years of conflict in which more than 300,000 people have been killed.Aid to desperate civilians was a key element of the deal, but deliveries were minimal during the truce and cross-border assistance never entered Syrian territory. The ceasefire was already under massive strain after a US-led coalition strike on Saturday hit a Syrian army post near the eastern city of Deir Ezzor, where government forces are battling the Islamic State jihadist group.

Oil steady with producers' meeting, US data on horizon

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices stabilized Tuesday in the run-up to a producers meeting next week, while traders were also awaiting the release of US stockpiles data.In New York trade, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for October rose 14 cents to $43.44 a barrel. In London, Brent North Sea crude for delivery in November lost 13 cents to $45.88 a barrel.Prices were lower in early trade but rebounded later in the day.Weve had Russia saying they would support a production freeze so we saw a quick reverse on prices which rallied until the closing, said Matt Smith of Clipperdata. He also said that swings in the market related to the looming close of the October contract for WTI.Youve got a lot of volatility on the last day because people need to square their books, he said.Russias comments bolstered hopes that the producer talks by the 14-nation OPEC cartel and Russia in Algeria from September 26-28 could reach a deal that would at least put a floor on crude prices. But some analysts said that in the absence of any firm agreement, prices will continue to swing. The credibility of bullish production freeze rhetoric from Venezuela is understandably being questioned in the run-up to next weeks Algiers meeting, while worries about additional supply (Nigeria, Libya) worsening the global glut add to the mix, noted analysts at traders Accendo Markets.Meanwhile, the US energy department is due to release the stockpiles figures on Wednesday. Many analysts predict a significant increase in US inventories of over two million barrels, which would indicate ongoing global oversupplies, said analyst Bill Hodder at broker Love Energy.

Cautious forex market awaits Fed, BoJ decisions

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar rose modestly against the euro but dipped against the yen Tuesday ahead of key central bank meetings in the US and Japan.Foreign exchange pairings avoided big swings on the eve of policy decisions by the Bank of Japan and Federal Reserve.Markets are girding for potentially dramatic moves by the Bank of Japan, which has seen stimulus efforts partly countered by strengthening of the yen. That has raised the odds of a policy surprise from the BOJ on Wednesday, analysts said. But BK Asset Management analyst Kathy Lien said hopes that the BOJ will take measures to weaken the Japanese currency could fall flat.Bolder more aggressive action is needed to put a top in the yen and a bottom in USD/JPY, but the chance of that happening is slim and we believe that at the end of the BOJ meeting, investors will be disappointed, Lien said. She added that the Fed was unlikely to hike rates on Wednesday, but the dollar could still rally if more than one member of the Feds monetary policy board dissents or if Yellen strikes a hawkish tone in a news conference.
