Mourinho offers hope to Rooney after dropping him Posted: MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Jose Mourinho says Wayne Rooney remains a key figure at Manchester United despite dropping his captain for the 4-1 thrashing of Leicester.Mourinho left United and England captain Rooney on the substitutes bench at Old Trafford on Saturday and was rewarded with a ruthless display against the Premier League champions. But the United manager insisted Rooney remains his leader and chose to focus on the performances of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard instead of the omission of the striker following a poor spell of form.My captain is my captain, said Mourinho. If he is on the pitch or if he is at home he is my captain.Thats not a problem but we thought against a team like Leicester with the way they defend and the profile of their defenders that the best solution for us was to play with the two fast kids and with (Juan) Mata in a position where he can interact with the young kids.So it ended well for us. If I dont play Rashford you ask me why. If I dont play Lingard you ask me why and you prefer always to ask why somebody is not playing.Sometimes when I read I feel I know nothing about football but there is one thing I know: the rules of the game.I can only start 11 and until somebody tells me there is a change in that I can only start with 11.United relieved some pressure with a classy display after they recorded three successive defeats before beating third-tier minnows Northampton in the League Cup in midweek. But Mourinho claimed his side are still developing from last seasons struggles under his predecessor Louis van Gaal, although the current manager insisted he had no regrets about setting their targets high.- Contradiction -=================I was the one with the aggressive approach in terms of my words, he said.I told you that I wanted to play for the title because this is the approach that Manchester United demands. It was not because I thought it was going to be an easy task.I could have been much more defensive in my words but I decided to go in another way and I dont regret that because this is the way we have to think. But of course there is a process. For them what really is more difficult is the fact that myself and Mr van Gaal think about football in a different way so it is normal that in their football brains there are still moments of contradiction between what they were used to do and what I want them to do.It is also a factor that in the recent past they were not successful and they know the responsibility to play for this club and the expectations when things are not going well.Leicester suffered a third defeat of the season -- the same number they recorded throughout last season when claiming the Premier League title. They were 4-0 down at half-time and so well beaten that manager Claudio Ranieri withdrew key duo Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez with Tuesdays Champions League clash with Porto in mind. Its very strange because the first 20 minutes we started well, moved the ball quickly and put them under pressure, Ranieri said.Suddenly then we conceded a goal with a corner and thats strange because were strong on the corner.Today we conceded three goals from corners. Its strange too because we switched off. We lost our confidence and strength. We started to try to do something but alone, not as a team. Now I want to speak with the players to understand what happened. We changed system and the shape. I wanted to preserve Vardy and Mahrez for the next match. |
Guardiola hopes to make Sergio Aguero even better player Posted: SWANSEA, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has vowed to make Sergio Aguero an even better player. The Argentine striker scored two goals on his return to City colours as the visitors made it 10 straight wins in league and cup football this season with a 3-1 victory away to Swansea on Saturday.Having missed the previous three games due to suspension, Aguero took only eight minutes to give City the lead.Fernando Llorente levelled five minutes later, but Agueros penalty, in the 65th minute, and a third from Raheem Sterling, 13 minutes from time, made the game safe. Its now six straight Premier League wins for Guardiola. The Spaniard was happy with the win, but still wants more from his players, including Aguero, who has now scored 11 times in six games so far this season.Guardiola said: I want to congratulate him on his performance, especially for the first goal.I am so happy for him. But I think he can play better and I will try to tell him.He has great ability and in the box, there is nothing I can do to help him.But maybe I can help him develop, like keeping the ball and helping the rest of the team.Swansea, beaten by Guardiolas men in the League Cup in midweek, certainly gave City a tougher test than their lowly league position suggested was possible.Guardiola added: I was not surprised by Swansea. It is not easy to play twice a week with the same team, so both teams changed. But they have good players and the goal they scored was very good, the Spaniard added. But I thought we did well with the ball.We were able to attack behind the midfield line and that was what I wanted. We played really well in the second half and we created some good chances. I think we deserved to win.It was an important win and now we have two games before the break. The only setback for City was the sight of Kevin De Bruyne limping off in the second half.Guardiola said: Kevin is injured, I think. It is a pity. From the way he reacted, it looked like a muscle injury. We will have to wait and see when we get back to Manchester, He will be going in to see the doctor on Sunday. The pressure is certainly mounting on Swansea boss Francesco Guidolin, for whom this was a fourth league defeat of the season. The performance was good in my opinion. Manchester City is the best team in the Premier League, but I thought my team played at the same level as them, Guidolin said.I am proud of my players, but of course, I am disappointed with the result. Before the penalty we had a good chance to score and I thought we deserved to score. It had been a good game for us up until then. But then we conceded and we lost the game. However, if we play this way in the future, we will be ok.On the penalty, awarded by referee Neil Swarbrick at a crucial time of the game, Guidolin said: I am not one to judge the referee. The referee is the judge. My opinion is not important.I said thanks to the referee after the game because that is the attitude I have towards referees. It certainly doesnt get any easier for the Swans. They play Liverpool next weekend and then Arsenal on October 15, at the Emirates.Guidolin added: Our fixtures are not easy in this period and in terms of our results, we are not in a very good moment. But our performance on Wednesday and today has been great.I dont know what the chairman or the owner think. But that is not important. What is important for me, is that I work hard with the players and have a good relationship with them. |

Monaco go on top of the French League with a close win Posted: PARIS (AFP) - With Radamel Falcao out injured, Monaco came from behind to claim a scrappy 2-1 win over Angers at the Stade Louis II on Saturday and move top of the Ligue 1 table.Falcao was absent after being hospitalised with a blow to the head in the principality clubs 4-0 trouncing at local rivals Nice during the week. And Leonardo Jardims side struggled to get the better of in-form Angers, a Dickson Nwakaeme own goal proving the difference after Kamil Glik had cancelled out Famara Diedhious opener. The result allowed Monaco to go two points clear of Nice, who visit Nancy on Sunday, and Toulouse, conquerors of champions Paris Saint-Germain on Friday.Youngsters Abdou Diallo and Kevin NDoram started for Monaco with Jardim having one eye on Tuesdays Champions League encounter with Bayer Leverkusen.Angers were chasing a fourth consecutive win and they thought they had taken the lead early in the second half when Karl Toko-Ekambi had the ball in the net but the offside flag cut short the celebrations. However, the visitors did go in front in controversial circumstances in the 56th minute as leggy Cameroon forward Toko-Ekambi slid the ball across goal for Cheikh Ndoye. The Angers captain made a mess of his shot and the ball came up and struck his hand before falling for Diedhiou, who scored. The goal stood despite the appeals for a handball.Nevertheless, Poland defender Glik fired in a 66th-minute equaliser from eight yards after Angers struggled to clear and the hosts secured the points with quarter of an hour left.Mathieu Michel saved from Glik but the ball rebounded off Nigerian substitute Nwakaeme and in.Monacos eighth win in nine games in all competitions came after Lyon missed the chance to move level on points with stumbling PSG as they lost 1-0 at struggling Lorient.Jimmy Cabot scored the only goal of the game early in the second half in Brittany as Lyon lost for the third time in the league already this season.Bruno Genesios side, who visit Sevilla in the Champions League this coming midweek, had beaten Montpellier 5-1 on Wednesday but that is now their only win in five Ligue 1 games.I am not worried, said Genesio, whose side were again without injured leading scorer Alexandre Lacazette and suspended captain Maxime Gonalons, although France midfielder Mathieu Valbuena came in for his first start since April and hit the bar in the first half. There is no need to panic after this result.I often say that the result is one thing but there is also the performance, whether we win or lose.We need to keep calm. It is a shame, because it was a chance to climb the table and I think we deserved better.Champions PSG slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Toulouse on Friday with Yann Bodiger scoring a penalty and Jimmy Durmaz also netting for the hosts after Serge Aurier had been sent off for the team from the capital.PSG are fourth, three points behind Monaco and level on points with Bordeaux and Metz.Bordeaux were held to a 0-0 draw by Caen while newly-promoted Metz continued their good start to the campaign by winning 1-0 in Montpellier thanks to a Mevlut Erding penalty.Bastia defeated Guingamp 1-0 and Lois Diony scored twice as Dijon beat Rennes 3-0.Lille are bottom of the table before they go to Saint-Etienne on Sunday, with Marseille also in action at home to Nantes. |
Charlotte police to release video of black man's fatal shooting Posted: WASHINGTON (AFP) - Charlotte police will release footage of the shooting death of a black man during an encounter with officers in the state of North Carolina, Chief Kerr Putney told reporters Saturday. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg police chief said he will release both the body-worn camera footage and dash-cam footage that captured the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott, whose Tuesday death has triggered days of unrest and calls for the videos release.Police had previously refused to release the footage, which they said showed that the 43-year-old African American had posed a threat to officers. What I need is confirmation that when I release what Im going to release, there is no adverse impact on the State Bureau of Investigations investigation. And I have that assurance now, Putney said.Scott was shot and killed at a Charlotte apartment complex during an encounter with police searching for another person wanted for arrest.Police say he had a handgun. His family says he was holding a book.Scotts family has already released two minutes of smartphone footage filmed by his wife, which does not show the shooting itself and does not conclusively answer the question of whether he was armed.Putney said that officers saw marijuana and a weapon at which point they decided the situation posed a safety issue for us and the public. He added that DNA evidence would also be released.Scotts death is the latest in a string of police-involved killings of black men that have fueled outrage across America. |
Obama opens new African American Museum amid national racial strife Posted: WASHINGTON (AFP) - President Barack Obama hailed Saturday the opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, a long-awaited institution dedicated to the many threads of black suffering and triumph in the United States. The first black president of the United States cut the ribbon to inaugurate the striking 400,000-square-foot (37,000-square-meter) bronze-clad edifice before thousands of spectators gathered in the US capital to witness the historic opening, at a time of growing racial friction.Beyond the majesty of the building, what makes this occasion so special is the larger story it contains, said Obama -- just a few months before he leaves office -- at the star-studded public ceremony that included the likes of Stevie Wonder and Oprah Winfrey.African-American history is not somehow separate from our larger American story. Its not the underside of the American story, he said. It is central to the American story. The Smithsonians 19th addition to its sprawling museum and research complex is the first national museum tasked with documenting the uncomfortable truths of the countrys systematic oppression of black people, while also honoring the integral role of African-American culture.A clear-eyed view of history can make us uncomfortable, Obama said. It is precisely of that discomfort that we learn and grow and harness our collective power to make this nation more perfect. Thats the American story that this museum tells.Guests of honor on stage included four generations of a black family called the Bonners, led by 99-year-old great-grandmother Ruth, the daughter of a slave who went on to graduate from medical school. After Obama declared the museum open to the world, it was she -- stooped in stature but smiling broadly -- who tugged on a rope to ring an antique bell from an historic black church, sealing the inauguration.I feel a sense of pride and a sense of humbleness because of all the sacrifices that so many people made to make this happen, said audience member Karmello Colman, who trekked halfway across the country for the ceremony from Kansas City, Missouri.I feel honored because it is highlighting the accomplishments of my ancestors, who were probably slaves, and those of so many others.Elected in a wave of optimism in 2008, Obama pledged to unify, often repeating that he is not the president of black Americans but of all Americans. But as his presidential mandate ends polls show that the overwhelming majority of Americans see US race relations as generally bad.The recent fatal police shootings of black men in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Charlotte, North Carolina laid bare yet again the countrys racial disquiet.Obama delivered his Saturday address amid these ever-heightening tensions, as national outrage grows over the spate of deaths of black men at the hands of police, prompting mass protests. The president emphasized that a museum alone cannot solve the ills of a country still struggling to overcome a dark legacy of slavery and racial prejudice, but said it provides context for the debate of our times.Perhaps it can help a white visitor understand the pain and anger of demonstrators and places like Ferguson and Charlotte, Obama said.It can also help black visitors appreciate the fact that not only is this younger generation carrying on traditions of the past, but within the white communities, across the nation, we see the sincerity of law enforcement officers and officials who, in fits and starts, are struggling to understand. And are trying to do the right thing, he said. The dramatic building -- set in a prime location near the White House and the Washington Monument -- features three inverted-pyramid tiers sheathed in bronze-painted filigree panels that house more than 34,000 objects, nearly half of them donated.Obama noted that the building reaches 70 feet below ground -- its roots spreading far wider and deeper than any tree on this mall -- a crypt of historical galleries that wind from slavery to civil rights to Black Lives Matter, ascending into upper floors that include testaments to African-American cultural contributions.Im so happy to see that so many people of color are coming out together just to celebrate themselves and one another, said 50-year-old Derek Jones, who ventured from New York to attend Saturdays celebration that included music, poetry and dancing. Its amazing to get this opened by the end of Obamas eight years, Jones said, adding that he is proud that hes still president during the opening -- its really profound.Ringing up to $540 million -- half of which was raised from private donations -- the museum shows that this country born of change, this country born of revolution, this country of we the people, this country can get better, Obama said.It is a monument, no less than the others on this mall, to the deep and abiding love for this country and the ideals upon which it is founded. For we, too, are American. |
Ronaldo unhappy to be subbed as Real Madrid drop two points Posted: MADRID (AFP) - A substituted Cristiano Ronaldo cut a disconsolate figure as Real Madrid conceded a late equaliser to draw 2-2 at Las Palmas on Saturday.Earlier, Barcelona shrugged off the absence of the injured Lionel Messi to move to within a point of Madrid at the top of the table as Luis Suarez and Neymar were on target in a 5-0 thrashing of Sporting Gijon.Ronaldo was replaced moments after helping Madrid go 2-1 in front when Karim Benzema slotted home the rebound after the Portugueses initial effort was saved. However, he watched on as Sergio Araujo took advantage of some soft Madrid defending to level as the European champions dropped points for the second time in four days.Stung by a poor first-half performance in a 1-1 draw with Villarreal in midweek that snapped a 16-game La Liga winning streak, Madrid pressed high from the off and had 17 shots in a wide open first 45 minutes.Las Palmas keeper Javi Varas repelled Alvaro Moratas powerful header before Ronaldo fluffed his lines when presented with a glorious chance from Moratas cut-back.Eventually Real made the breakthrough just after the half-hour mark when Varas made another fine save from Nachos low effort, but Marco Asensio followed up to head into an empty net.The lead lasted just five minutes, though, as Raphael Varanes poor defensive header fell at the feet of Tana, who slotted past the helpless Kiko Casilla.More Varas heroics denied Gareth Bale either side of half-time as the Welshman saw two fierce drives beaten to safety.Varas also saved from Ronaldo midway through the second half, but substitute Benzema was on hand to turn home the loose ball.Ronaldo was then replaced by Lucas Vazquez, but didnt acknowledge coach Zinedine Zidane as he sulked off the field. And the three-time World Player of the Years mood worsened when Araujo slotted home the equaliser five minutes from time.Earlier, Barca overcame a difficult opening half hour to hit five past 10-man Sporting.Yet, Barca coach Luis Enrique was far from satisfied with his sides display, particularly early in the second half.It is a result that doesnt tell the true story of the game -- 5-0 makes it seem easy and simple and that couldnt be further from the truth, he said.We were poor at the start of the second half, we didnt kill the game off and Sporting could have got back into the game.Fortunately, that wasnt to be and after the sending-off it unbalanced the game and allowed us to score those three goals at the end.One moment of Suarez magic turned the game in Barcas favour as he raced onto Arda Turans through ball and flicked the ball past the onrushing Ivan Cuellar before slotting into an empty net.A fine team goal put the game beyond Sporting moments later as Neymar freed Sergi Roberto down the right and Rafinha met his cross with a powerful near-post header.Barca appeared to have eased up in the second half ahead of Wednesdays visit to Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Champions League as Sergio Busquets and Suarez were replaced by Denis Suarez and Paco Alcacer. However, the goals flowed after Alberto Lora dived in on Roberto to leave his side a man light.Alcacer was denied his first Barca goal when he smashed the ball off the underside of the bar, but Neymar mopped up the rebound to make it 3-0.Roberto was the provider once more for the fourth as Turan powered home his cross at the back post four minutes later.Denis Suarez then teed up Neymar to sweep home his second of the game two minutes from time.Sevilla missed the chance to go level with Madrid at the top as they suffered their first league defeat of the season, losing 3-1 at Athletic Bilbao.On-loan Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri netted his first Sevilla goal to cancel out Mikel San Joses opener for the Basques.Mikel Balenziaga put the hosts back in front and Aritz Aduriz sealed Athletics fourth straight win which puts them third in the table from the penalty spot after he was elbowed in the back by Salvatore Sirigu, the foul earning the Italian keeper a straight red card. |
