RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - An Iranian Paralympic cyclist died Saturday after an accident in the road race on the penultimate day of the Rio Games, officials said.Bahman Golbarnezhad, 48, fell during the event and died of his injuries despite an attempt to take him to the hospital for treatment, officials said.He unfortunately passed away, International Paralympic Committee (IPC) spokesman Craig Spence told AFP.Golbarnezhads accident occurred during the more than two-hour C4-5 road race for athletes with varying disabilities but still able to bicycle. He was in the first section of a mountainous descent when he fell. The athlete received treatment at the scene and was in the process of being taken to the athlete hospital when he suffered a cardiac arrest, the IPC said in a statement. The ambulance then diverted to the nearby Unimed Rio Hospital in Barra where he passed away soon after arrival.Paralympic officials said Golbarnezhads family in Iran had been informed and the Iranian team was also told the news during a meeting at the Athletes Village. The cyclist, who wore a prosthesis on his left leg, took up the sport in 2002 and competed at the London 2012 Paralympics. This is truly heart-breaking news, IPC president Philip Craven said. The Paralympic Family is united in grief at this horrendous tragedy, which casts a shadow over what have been great Paralympic Games here in Rio.Brazils top official for the Rio Olympics and Paralympics, Carlos Nuzman, called it very sad news for sport and for the Paralympic movement. Our hearts and prayers are with Bahmans family, his teammates and all the people of Iran. The Iranian flag was lowered to half-mast in the Paralympic Village, while the Paralympic flag was to be at half mast during Sundays sitting volleyball gold-medal match between Iran and Bosnia and Herzegovina.A minute of silence will be held during Sundays closing ceremony.Iranian Paralympic officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The British Paralympic team tweeted: We are devastated by the news of Bahman Golbarnezhads passing. Our thoughts are with our friends and colleagues from NPC Iran.

Del Potro may not play the decisive Davis Cup clash against Britain

Posted:

GLASGOW (AFP) - Argentinas Juan Martin del Potro could sit out a potentially make-or-break Davis Cup semi-final decider against Great Britain on Sunday after playing for an exhausting eight hours over two days. The South Americans lead the defending champions 2-1 going into Sundays reverse singles where three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray is expected to see off Guido Pella. That would set the scene for the decisive clash which is expected to feature 2009 US Open champion del Potro against Kyle Edmund. But del Potro, still feeling his way back after a series of wrist injuries pushed him to the brink of retirement, says he is concerned for his long-term health after a tiring summer which saw him make the Olympics final and the quarter-finals of the US Open.Im not thinking about tomorrow. First Guido Pella has to play against Great Britains number one and he could win and close the tie, said the 27-year-old del Potro who beat Andy Murray in five sets on Friday in a rubber lasting over five hours. It was del Potros longest ever match and he was back in action on Saturday partnering Leonardo Mayer in a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 loss to Andy and Jamie Murray in the doubles.Of course I feel something bothering me with my body but that is normal, added del Potro.I didnt expect to play eight hours in two days. That is enough for me at this moment in my comeback.Im doing great and I didnt expect to play at this level. I have already beaten the top four guys in the world in the past two months but my biggest aim for this year is to finish it healthy. If something were to happen to me in these situations I would be very sad and I want to take care of my health. I fought a lot and spent a lot of time to come back to this situation. This is just the beginning of my new career. I want to play for many more years not just a few more matches. In the absence of Del Potro Argentina could call on either Federico Delbonis or Mayer.Andy Murray says he still believes Great Britain can book a place in the final. The holders found themselves trailing 2-0 after the opening days singles rubbers with Murrays loss to del Potro followed by Edmund being beaten by Pella.Ill give it my best effort tomorrow. Whether I win or not, I dont know. But I can definitely guarantee Ill give it my best effort to win, added Murray.Hopefully I can and it makes it interesting if it goes to a fifth rubber. But Im not going to be the fresher of the players going in to the match. Ill be tired and I have to except that and deal with it and try and play the match on my terms if possible.Great Britain beat Belgium in last years final while Argentina are trying to reach a fourth final in 10 years.

Trump bashes Clinton as far too soft on immigrants

Posted:

HOUSTON (AFP) - Donald Trump took his campaign to Texas on Saturday, bashing Hillary Clintons immigration policies as too lax, in a state still up for grabs on Election Day.With polls showing a tightening race just over seven weeks before the November 8 election, the Republican candidate turned up the vitriol, saying that as president, his Democratic rival would virtually end border enforcement and place the country in grave peril.Trump was speaking a day after a much-hyped televised event in which, after years of questioning whether Barack Obama was an American citizen, he finally declared that the president was born in the United States, period. But he also made the surprising charge -- refuted by fact-checkers -- that it was Clinton who originated the birther theories about Obama. On Saturday, speaking before a sympathetic audience that included people who said their friends or family members had been killed by undocumented immigrants, Trump continued his sharp attacks on Clinton. The immigration issue has been central to Trumps campaign since he said last summer that many Mexican immigrants were drug smugglers and rapists. The candidate made it clear Saturday that he is not about to give up on the attack line, even at the risk of offending many Hispanic voters.- Continuing attacks -======================Trump asserted that Clinton would implement amnesty by executive order, violating our constitution and putting the entire nation in grave peril.Clinton has called for a softening of immigration practices, saying she would deport only violent criminals and terrorists, a position in stark contrast to Trumps vow to build a border wall and deport huge numbers of the undocumented. His suggestion that immigrants are disproportionally responsible for serious crime appears unfounded, according to several studies. However, Trump insisted on Saturday that Americans are being killed on a daily basis by the undocumented.Every day our border remains open, innocent Americans are needlessly victimized and killed, he said.Every day we fail to enforce our laws... a loving parent is at risk of losing their child. While he repeated his charge that Clinton would introduce total amnesty in the first 100 days, which means Obamacare, Social Security and Medicare for illegal immigrants, her website does not mention amnesty. It does promise to introduce comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway to full and equal citizenship within (the) first 100 days, lifting the threat of deportation in many cases.- Tightening race -===================Clinton, who returned to the campaign trail Thursday after a bout with pneumonia, has pressed the theme that her Republican rival is unfit to be president. His campaign was founded on this outrageous lie about Obamas birth, she said. There is no erasing it in history.Hes feeding into the worst impulses, the bigotry and bias that lurks in our country, she added.Democrats are increasingly worried about poll numbers during a week that Clinton lost momentum. She fell ill last week during a 9/11 memorial ceremony in New York, where she was seen stumbling limp-legged into her vehicle, an episode that raised tough questions about her overall health and her campaigns transparency.Polls show the lead she has held over Trump narrowing quickly. One survey gave her just a two-point margin, down sharply in a matter of weeks, boosting worries she is ceding the stage to Trump as time runs out on the campaign clock. Two of the Democrats liberal stars, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, were campaigning for Clinton in Ohio on Saturday to drum up support among the young people whose votes she needs on election day.Sanders ripped into Trump about the birther controversy. What they were trying to do, he said at a rally, is to de-legitimize the presidency of the first African-American president we have ever had.Employing a different line of attack on Friday, Trump again raised the threat of violence against Clinton, suggesting during a rally in Miami that Clintons Secret Service guards voluntarily disarm and see what happens to her.I think that her bodyguards should drop all weapons, the real estate billionaire told a cheering rally. Take their guns away. She doesnt want guns. Take them. Lets see what happens to her... It will be very dangerous.Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook condemned Trumps widely criticized remarks, saying they should be out of bounds for a presidential candidate.

Murray brothers keep Britain's hopes alive against Argentina

Posted:

GLASGOW (AFP) - Andy and Jamie Murray kept Great Britains hopes of retaining their Davis Cup title alive as they defeated Argentinas Juan Martin del Potro and Leonardo Mayer in four sets in the doubles rubber of their semi-final on Saturday.Leading 2-0 from Fridays singles, Argentina captain Daniel Orsanic selected Del Potro alongside Mayer instead of his usual partner Federico Delbonis as they looked to wrap up victory early. However, the tactic backfired as world number two Andy and his older brother Jamie secured a thrilling 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory in just under three hours on the hard court of the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.Yesterday was a very tough day. To come out and get the win with Jamie today was great, three-time Grand Slam winner Andy said.He played unbelievably well throughout the whole match. We are 2-1 down and it is a tough position to be in, but it is a better position that we were in at the beginning of the day and I still believe we can come back.Argentina are looking to reach their fourth final in 10 years but will have to wait until Sundays reverse singles rubbers to try and claim the point they need for a place in the final against either Croatia or France.Kyle Edmund looks likely to face Del Potro in the decisive rubber as Great Britain attempt to defend the competition they won in Ghent last year, with Andy Murray favourite to defeat Guido Pella in the first reverse singles on Sunday. We played a great match but we had to as those guys are playing really well too, said Jamie Murray.I think we should be proud of the way we played and competed from start to finish. Were back in the tie and gives us some momentum back in the tie going into tomorrows matches. With his side losing both of Fridays singles, it was no surprise to see British captain Leon Smith pick Andy alongside Jamie instead of Dan Evans as he opted for the pairing who secured victory in last years final against Belgium. However, after his five-hour and seven-minute epic win against Murray on Friday, the expectation was that Del Potro, still working his way back into the game following wrist surgery, would take the day off ahead of Sundays reverse singles. The gamble to pick the 27-year-old didnt look like paying off with the Argentine pairing initially looking like strangers on the court.I felt tired but that is normal. I think for the team it was the best option to play the doubles, Del Potro said.I think we did really well. We had some chances but we couldnt win.It was Jamie, who claimed Grand Slam glory in both the Australian and US Open doubles finals this year, and younger sibling Andy, showing no signs of fatigue, that looked more comfortable in the doubles environment as they helped the Brits race into a five-game lead without reply in the first set before claiming it 6-1 in just 26 minutes.Their good work seemed to come undone in the second game of the following set as Argentina immediately broke to take a 4-1 lead before serving out to take the set 6-3.The third set went with serve until the seventh game when Argentina moved in front with a break as Andy struggled with his first serve.Argentinas joy was short-lived, however, as Britain broke back immediately as they won three games in a row with a clever return down the line from Jamie sealing the set. There was nothing to separate the sides in the fourth set which went with serve until the tenth game where, in a repeat of the third, the Murrays broke at the crucial moment to claim victory.

Rafael Nadal helps Spain in getting promoted to World Group

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Tennis star Rafael Nadal and Marc Lopez clinched the Davis Cup World Group play-off tie for Spain with a hard-fought doubles win over India in New Delhi on Saturday.Nadal and Lopez, who won the doubles gold at the recent Rio Olympics, helped Spain take an unassailable 3-0 lead to enter the elite group after a two-year gap.World number four Nadal shrugged off early rustiness as the Spanish pair served past the Indian duo of Leander Paes and Saketh Myneni 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 in three hours and 23 minutes.Nadal missed the opening singles match on Friday following a reported stomach ache as Feliciano Lopez and David Ferrer put Spain in firm control of the tie with their respective wins. But the 14-time Grand Slam winner made his presence felt in the doubles encounter at Delhis RK Khanna Tennis Stadium. We are happy to be back in the world group and thats the most important thing. Thats where we think we need to be with a lot of our players in the top hundred, Nadal told reporters. That was our goal and we did it. The team here and all the players who are not here have made their contributions and everybody is happy.Nadals early struggle with his game saw the visitors lose the first set after being broken twice by an inspired home pair who had the raucous crowd behind them. The Spanish duo were also run in close in the second set but a crucial break in the 10th game proved to be a turning point for the visitors. The tie-break win was enough to get the best out of Nadal, who showed flashes of his brilliance to entertain the capacity crowd.Indias Paes and Myneni fought valiantly against their opponents, never allowing the Spanish pair to breathe easy in the marathon battle. The 43-year-old Paes with his neat serve and volley showed why he is known to be a dangerous doubles player. He played a great match. It was a pleasure to play him in his country. One of the biggest stars of doubles and one of the best players in the history of doubles, said Nadal.Paes returned the compliments by praising Nadal and the Spanish team.We were playing the Olympic gold medallists. They were a tough world class team. Marc and Rafa are great players. Rafa is a legend, Paes said of his opponents. The left-handed Nadal, who was guilty of committing a lot of unforced errors in the first two sets, attacked the net with great success as Spain dominated the final two.Marc Lopez, who is placed 15th in the doubles ranking, complimented Nadals attacking style with his good baseline play.Spain, who bowed out of the World Group after a first-round loss against Germany in 2014, now head into the elite round of matches. The dead reverse singles will be played on Sunday.

Arsenal, Leicester City and Manchester City register easy wins

LONDON (AFP) - Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Kelechi Iheanacho shone as Manchester City crushed Bournemouth 4-0 on Saturday to preserve their lead at the Premier League summit.League debutant Ilkay Gundogan also found the net for Pep Guardiolas City, who have made their best ever start to a season with eight consecutive wins in all competitions.Everton climbed to second by beating Middlesbrough, while Islam Slimani scored twice on his first league start as champions Leicester City downed Burnley 3-0 and Arsenal won 4-1 at Hull City. Our high pressing was not perfect today. We had problems with controlling the Bournemouth build-up, but we created a lot of counter-attacks, said City manager Guardiola, who lost Nolito to a late red card.We are so lucky that we have Kevin De Bruyne with us. It was a fantastic performance.Guardiola made four changes to the team that had outclassed Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Champions League on Wednesday, with Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy, Iheanacho and Nolito coming in.Jack Wilshere, on loan from Arsenal, made his first Bournemouth start, but it was to prove an afternoon to forget for the England international. He gave away the free-kick that led to Citys 15th-minute opener, De Bruyne cleverly stroking the set-piece beneath the jumping wall and into the bottom corner. The Belgian was involved in the hosts second goal 10 minutes later, moving Nolitos pass on to Sterling, who unselfishly teed up Iheanacho -- deputising for the suspended Sergio Aguero -- to score.Sterling added a third early in the second half, squeezing a shot over the line after Iheanacho had returned the favour, before De Bruyne set up Gundogan for Citys fourth. The only disappointment for Guardiola was the late dismissal of Spanish forward Nolito for leaning his head into Adam Smiths face.Everton remain two points back in second place after Ronald Koemans side came from behind to beat Middlesbrough 3-1 at Goodison Park.Boro took a 21st-minute lead when Everton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg palmed George Friends cross into his own net as he was challenged by Alvaro Negredo. But Gareth Barry marked his 600th Premier League appearance with an equaliser while Seamus Coleman and Romelu Lukaku completed the comeback before half-time.- Sanchez at the double -=========================Arsenal stand three points below Everton in third place after Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez scored twice and squandered a penalty in their success at Hull.Sanchez claimed Arsenals first goal when Alex Iwobis shot flicked off him and into the net, only to then see his spot-kick saved by Eldin Jakupovic after Jake Livermore had been sent off for handball. After Theo Walcott had chipped in to make it 2-0, Robert Snodgrass reduced the arrears with a 79th-minute penalty following a foul on Hull debutant Dieumerci Mbokani by visiting goalkeeper Petr Cech. But Sanchez made the game safe four minutes later by lashing home after Jakupovic had saved from Walcott and substitute Granit Xhaka added a stunning late goal from long range.I feel overall it was a positive performance after playing away in the Champions League and away again today, said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, whose side drew 1-1 at Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday. We started well, dominated and were fluent.Arsenal are level on points with Chelsea and Liverpool, who met at Stamford Bridge on Friday, the Merseyside club winning 2-1.Leicester climbed to ninth place after Slimani put paid to Burnley at the King Power Stadium. The Algeria striker was making his league debut after his 28 million pounds ($36.4 million, 32.6 million euros) transfer from Sporting Lisbon. He scored a pair of headers either side of half-time, nodding in a Christian Fuchs free-kick in first-half injury time and then heading home from strike partner Jamie Vardys flick.Ben Mees own goal from Riyad Mahrezs cross completed the scoring in the 78th minute. Its important Slimani continues to score because if he only scores in the first match, we have a problem, said Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri. In the days remaining match, West Bromwich Albion withstood a late West Ham United fightback to record an entertaining 4-2 win at The Hawthorns.New signing Nacer Chadli scored twice and helped create goals for Salomon Rondon and James McClean as the hosts raced into a 4-0 lead by the 56th minute.West Ham replied through Michail Antonios header -- his fifth goal in four games -- and a Manuel Lanzini penalty, but West Brom saw out the rest of the game in relative serenity.

Messi scores two goals as Barcelona thrash Leganes 5-1

MADRID, Sept 17, 2016 (AFP) - Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar were all on target as Barcelona got back to winning ways in La Liga with a 5-1 thrashing at newly promoted Leganes on Saturday.Antoine Griezmann and Fernando Torres struck twice as Atletico Madrid moved into third with their third win of the week in a 5-0 rout of Sporting Gijon.Barca move level with Real Madrid at the top of the table, but Madrid play their game in hand away to Espanyol without the injured Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale on Sunday.Atletico travel to face Barcelona next on Wednesday. We started very well. If we had started sluggishly, thinking we just needed to turn up to win, then we would have struggled a lot more, said Barca boss Luis Enrique.Messi, Suarez and Neymar started together for only the second time this season and, just as in a 7-0 thrashing of Celtic on Tuesday, showed no mercy as Leganess high defensive line was torn apart in the first-half.On one hand their high pressing made things uncomfortable, but on the other hand it meant we could take advantage of the space, added Enrique. After a bright start from Leganes, Suarez showed great strength to burst down the right and his low cross was easily turned home by Messi for the opener. The roles were reversed for Barcas second when Messi was gifted possession inside the Leganes half and waltzed past two defenders before teeing up Suarez for a tap-in.Suarez bagged his second assist of the half just before the break when he was released clear on goal and selflessly squared for Neymar this time to roll into an empty net.- Messi spot-on -=================All of Barcas front three were involved for the fourth 10 minutes after the break as Neymar latched onto Suarezs ball over the top and was dragged down by Unai Bustinza.Messi showed no signs of the penalty yips he suffered last season and at the Copa America in June as he fired into the top corner for his eighth goal in as many games this season. However, the two best goals of the afternoon were still to come as Rafinha cut inside onto his weaker left foot to unleash a rocket into the top corner for Barcas fifth. And Leganes got the reward their display merited 10 minutes from time when Gabriel Appelt Pires curled a sensational free-kick past the helpless Marc-Andre ter Stegen.Atletico will travel to the Catalan capital in midweek full of confidence after a mauling of Sporting registered their first home win of the season.Griezmann took just two minutes to open the scoring when he raced onto Kevin Gameiros through ball before composing himself to slot past Ivan Cuellar.Gameiro lashed home his first Atletico goal from open play following a 30 million euro ($33.6 million) move from Sevilla just three minutes later. Not to be outdone by his French international teammate, Griezmann then unleashed a stunning effort of his own from outside the box to make it 3-0 after just half an hour.Atletico boss Diego Simeone, who shortened his contract from 2020 to 2018 in midweek, replaced Griezmann with Torres early in the second-half with one eye on his sides upcoming trip the Camp Nou.For me he was the best player in Europe last season, Simeone said of Griezmann after his second double in as many La Liga games. That consistency will only serve to make him stronger.Torres made it 4-0 with a neat near-post finish from Angel Correas cross before rounding off the scoring from the penalty spot after Nicolas Gaitan had been felled inside the area.Sevilla missed the chance to go top as they surrendered a lead against nine-man Eibar to draw 1-1 at Ipurua.Luciano Vietto gave the visitors an early lead before Eibar goalkeeper Yoel Rodriguez was sent-off on the stroke of half-time.Pedro Leon levelled for the 10 men before Dani Garcia was also shown red late on as Eibar held on.

Guardiola believes De Bruyne is best after Lionel Messi

Posted:

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Kevin De Bruyne is second only to Lionel Messi, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said on Saturday after the Belgian inspired his team to a 4-0 win over Bournemouth.Bruyne put the Premier League leaders ahead with a clever 15th-minute free-kick beneath the defensive wall and also played a part in goals for Kelechi Iheanacho, Raheem Sterling and Ilkay Gundogan.Guardiola won a glut of trophies with Messi during their time together at Barcelona and in his eyes, the Argentina superstar is the only player who can put De Bruyne in the shade.Maybe Messi can sit alone at the table. But that table aside, Kevin can stay there, Guardiola told reporters at the Etihad Stadium.I think hes a special player, an outstanding player. He makes everything. Without the ball he is the first fighter and with the ball hes clear. He sees absolutely everything. He decides what you have to do at the right moment every time. Every time he makes the right decision. Thats why he is a player at another level.I am lucky and we are lucky to have him. We will take care of him and I hope he will enjoy it with us to play his amazing football.De Bruyne, 25, was the man of the match in Citys 2-1 win at derby rivals Manchester United last weekend, scoring their opening goal and helping tee up Iheanacho for what proved to be the winner. The Belgium international has now scored 18 goals and provided 16 assists for City in 48 appearances.

One dead as fighting elephants spark stampede in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO: (AFP) - Brawling elephants triggered a stampede at a temple in southern Sri Lanka which left one woman dead and a dozen wounded, police said Saturday.A mahout tried to separate the two animals by poking one with a sharp-edged hook, causing the elephant to run away in pain late Friday, a police official said. The elephant did not harm anyone, it was trying to get away from the mahout, but people panicked and started running, a local police official told AFP by phone. The Hindu temple in Ratnapura, 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of Colombo, was packed with devotees ahead of an annual pageant.A 60-year-old woman died of a heart attack following the incident, while about a dozen others were hospitalised for minor injuries suffered in the stampede, the police official said. The situation was quickly brought under control, he added.Elephants are considered sacred in Sri Lanka and domesticated animals are frequently paraded at temples during Buddhist and Hindu festivals. The countrys wild elephant population had dropped to 6,000, from some 7,379 five years ago, largely due to farmers encroaching on their natural habitat. The number of domesticated elephants has also dropped considerably as the authorities no longer grant permits for the capture of animals from the wild.
