Yahoo hack hit 500 mn users, likely 'state sponsored'

Posted:

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Yahoo said Thursday a massive attack on its network in 2014 allowed hackers to steal data from half a billion users and may have been state sponsored.Yahoo, which confirmed details of the breach months after reports of a major hack, said its investigation concluded that certain user account information was stolen and that the attack came from what it believes is a state-sponsored actor.Based on the ongoing investigation, Yahoo believes that information associated with at least 500 million user accounts was stolen, a statement from the US internet giant in what is likely the largest-ever breach from a single organization.Yahoo is working closely with law enforcement on this matter. The comments come after a report earlier this year quoting a security researcher saying some 200 million accounts may have been accessed and that hacked data was being offered for sale online.Yahoo said the stolen information may have included names, email address, birth dates, and scrambled passwords, along with encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers that could help hackers break into victims other online accounts. While there is no official record of the largest breaches, many analysts have called the Myspace hack revealed earlier this year as the largest to date, with 360 million users affected.Computer security analyst Graham Cluley said the stolen Yahoo data could be useful ammunition for any hacker attempting to break into Yahoo accounts, or interested in exploring whether users might have used the same security questions/answers to protect themselves elsewhere on the web.He noted that while Yahoo said that it believes they hack was state-sponsored, the company provided no details regarding what makes them think that is the case.If I had to break the bad news that my company had been hacked... I would feel much happier saying that the attackers were state-sponsored, rather than teen hackers, Cluley said in a blog post.It appeared that looted data did not include unprotected passwords or information associated with payments or bank accounts, the Silicon Valley company said.Yahoo is asking affected users to change passwords, and recommending anyone who hasnt done so since 2014 take the same action as a precaution.Users of Yahoo online services were urged to review accounts for suspicious activity and change passwords and security question information used to log in anywhere else if it matched that at Yahoo.Online intrusions and thefts by state-sponsored actors have become increasingly common across the technology industry, Yahoo said in a release.Yahoo and other companies have launched programs to detect and notify users when a company strongly suspects that a state-sponsored actor has targeted an account.Confirmation of the major cyber breach comes two months after Yahoo sealed a deal to sell its core internet business to telecom giant Verizon for $4.8 billion, ending a two-decade run as an independent company. It was not immediately clear if the data breach could impact the closing of the deal or the price agreed to by Verizon.Frankly, the timing couldnt be worse for Yahoo, Cluley said. The telecom firm said it was reviewing the new information.Within the last two days, we were notified of Yahoos security incident, Verizon said in a released statement. We will evaluate as the investigation continues through the lens of overall Verizon interests, including consumers, customers, shareholders and related communities.

Nasdaq hits fresh record as Fed effect boosts US stocks

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The Nasdaq surged to its second straight record Thursday as US stocks again posted strong gains following the Federal Reserves decision to keep interest rates low. Apple jumped 0.9 percent and Amazon 1.9 percent, two of the big technology equities that helped lift the Nasdaq to 5,339.52, up 0.8 percent after also hitting a new high on Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished up 0.5 percent at 18,392.46, while the broad-based S&P 500 gained 0.7 percent to 2,177.18.This is a continuation triggered by the Fed meeting, said Alan Skrainka, chief investment officer at Cornerstone Wealth Management.Investors are quite convinced that there will be, at most, one rate hike this year and most likely in December.Yahoo finished flat, missing the rally that lifted other technology companies, after disclosing that hackers, likely state-sponsored, penetrated its network in 2014, stealing data from some 500 million users.Dow member Boeing rose 1.0 percent following a World Trade Organization ruling that said the European Union had failed to end illegal subsidies for Airbus. Boeing said that under the ruling, the United States could levy retaliatory duties against the European Union of up to $10 billion a year. The EU said that it found some of the WTO findings to be unsatisfactory, and noted it had the right to appeal the ruling.Drug maker Mylan rose 1.6 percent after chief executive Heather Bresch defended the company against tough questioning in a congressional hearing on price increases of EpiPens, which are used to counter allergic reactions.Software company Red Hat jumped 3.9 percent as second-quarter net income rose 14.4 percent to $58.8 million.

Oil market gains ahead of Algiers meeting

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices climbed Thursday, building on the previous days gains, as traders looked ahead to a key meeting of major oil producers next week in Algeria.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for November delivery gained 98 cents to $46.32 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent oil for delivery in November, added 82 cents at $47.65 a barrel in London. It was the second straight day of solid gains after the US Department of Energy reported Wednesday that US commercial inventories of crude oil tumbled more than six million barrels last week. OPEC and non-OPEC members are planning talks in Algiers next week on how to reverse the supply glut that sent oil prices to near 13 year lows at the start of 2016.Analysts were giving those talks a better chance following news that oil giants Saudi Arabia, Iran and Qatar met at OPEC headquarters in Vienna. If sometime before Wednesday we hear that OPEC has scheduled a formal extraordinary OPEC meeting at the end of the conference, it will signal they have reached an agreement to put a lid on production increases, said James Williams of WTRG Economics.Previous efforts in April for a production cap fell apart after OPEC member Iran -- which had just come out from years of Western nuclear-linked sanctions -- refused to take part.Analysts also pointed to a boost from Wednesdays Federal Reserve meeting at which the US central bank kept interest rates low. That decision pushed the dollar lower against most currencies, boosting demand for oil, which is traded internationally in the US currency. The weaker dollar is definitely helping commodities across the board, said Oliver Sloup of iiTrader.com.

Dollar, yen weaker as markets weigh Fed, BoJ moves

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar and yen both sagged Thursday, one day after their backing central banks held policy rates stable amid uncertainty over inflation and economic growth. The yen gave back some its surprising gains of Wednesday when markets decided the BoJs new effort to boost inflation by setting a yield cap on long bonds and planning to overshoot its 2 percent inflation target might not do the trick. The yen pulled back to 112.94 per euro and 100.77 per dollar, still stronger than the BoJ likely hoped after its latest try at stimulating growth.Meanwhile the dollar was lower against the euro, at $1.1208, even though the Fed made clear that, while if it was not raising interest rates this week, it was likely to do so in December. That could have been expected to push the greenback higher, said Christopher Vecchio at DailyFX.But he noted that the Fed also indicated they expect a very slow pace of subsequent hikes, perhaps only two in 2017, less than markets had previously anticipated.Even as December 2016 rate hike odds rise, the Fed is lowering is expectations for the US economy and thus, reducing the estimated glide path of interest rates, he said. That points to less divergence with other key currency rates, hence the selling bias on the dollar.

Pakistan, West Indies first T20 in Dubai today

Posted:

DUBAI (Dunya News/AFP) – Pakistan are all set to face world champions West Indies in first Twenty20 of the three-match series at Dubai International Cricket Stadium today (Friday). The match will start at 9:00pm PST.According to details, green shirts will step onto the pitch under the captaincy of Sarfraz Ahmed while Carlos Brathwaite would lead West Indies team in the tournament. The West Indies will hope to forget their off-field turmoil and underline their status as World Twenty20 champions when they face buoyant Pakistan. The supremely talented but troubled side have arrived in the United Arab Emirates after sacking coach Phil Simmons and without all-rounder Andre Russell, who is facing a doping hearing. The Windies are also missing flamboyant big-hitter Chris Gayle, who complains of injury problems and makes only sporadic appearances for his country.Gayle also missed the West Indies one-run Twenty20 win over India in Florida last month, while Russell will front a hearing into claims he missed three drugs tests in a 12-month period, an offence which could trigger a two-year ban.Carlos Brathwaite stunned England when he smashed Ben Stokes for four consecutive sixes to clinch the West Indies second World T20 title in April.Brathwaite will now captain the side in UAE while towering former fast bowler Joel Big Bird Garner replaces Simmons, who repeatedly clashed with the West Indies board.Brathwaite hopes his team will show their huge talent in the humid conditions in the United Arab Emirates, where they also trained ahead of the World Twenty20 in India. It wasnt as hot early in the year, but, apparently, were smack dab in the middle of their summer, so it can get very, very hot, said Brathwaite. Its for the players to prepare well, manage themselves well off the field, rehydration-wise, get enough rest, and each and every one of us is a professional, and evidently performing well when the games come.Brathwaites uncapped players -- including wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran, all-rounder Rovman Powell and fast bowler Kesrick Williams -- will also want to fire against a dangerous Pakistan side. The West Indies will rely heavily on their T20 specialist spinners Samuel Badree and Sunil Narine, who shared five wickets to spark a 22-run win in a warm-up game on Tuesday.Pakistan are also in good form, smashing hosts England by nine wickets in the only Twenty20 game of their tour in what was Sarfraz Ahmeds first match as skipper.Ahmed, who replaced Shahid Afridi following Pakistans first-round exit in the World Twenty20, hopes his team wont be overawed by the champions. We didnt think England were World Twenty20 finalists when we beat them at Manchester, said Ahmed. We will do the same here, go out and play hard because the team which plays well on the ground wins a T20 match. He added: Even without Gayle and Russell, West Indies is strong and a T20 match is not won with big names only. Fast bowler Mohammad Amir joined the squad after his wedding on Tuesday and will spearhead a spin-cum-pace attack. Opener Mohammad Hafeez and lanky paceman Mohammad Irfan are out through injury.Middle-order batsman Umar Akmal will be in focus after being recalled following his axing on the England tour over disciplinary issues. Umar smashed a fiery century in a national Twenty20 event to force his comeback. The second match will follow at the same venue on Saturday with the third in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. The teams will also play three one-day internationals and three Tests.Squads (from):Pakistan: Sarfraz Ahmed (capt), Khalid Latif, Sharjeel Khan, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Rizwan, Babar Azam, Mohammad Nawaz, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir, Wahab Riaz, Hasan Ali, Sohail Tanvir, Rumman Raees, Umar Akmal, Saad Nasim.West Indies: Carlos Brathwaite (capt), Samuel Badree, Dwayne Bravo, Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher, Jason Holder, Evin Lewis, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell, Marlon Samuels, Jerome Taylor, Chadwick Walton, Kesrick Williams.Umpires: Ahsan Raza (PAK) and Shozab Raza (PAK).Tv umpire: Ahmed Shahab (PAK).Match referee: Andy Pycroftt (ZIM).

Santner, Boult peg NZ back in India's 500th Test

Posted:

KANPUR (AFP) - Mitchell Santner and Trent Boult helped New Zealand strike back to check Indias surge in the first Test as the hosts were left reeling at 291 for nine on the opening day in Kanpur Thursday.Left-arm spinner Santner and pace spearhead Boult took three wickets each to plot Indias downfall after the hosts looked strongly placed on 154 for one in the countrys 500th Test.Ravindra Jadeja on 16 and Umesh Yadav on eight were at the crease at close of play.India, who elected to bat first, looked set to post a commanding lead thanks to half-centuries from Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara, only to then lose the inititive.Opener Lokesh Rahul gave India a solid start before a 112-run second-wicket stand between Vijay and Pujara.Santner broke the big partnership after getting Pujara caught and bowled for 62 as India lost three wickets in the second session of play.Vijay, who top-scored with 65, continued to thwart the bowling attack as New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson kept the Indian batsmen guessing by juggling his pace and spin options. His move paid off when medium-pacer Neil Wagner claimed Indian skipper Virat Kohlis scalp, caught at long-leg for nine after pulling at a bouncer.New Zealands leg-spinner Ish Sodhi also played a key role, claiming the wicket of Vijay, who had notched up his 13th Test fifty, just before the tea break.Mark Craig joined forces with fellow spinners to get Ajinkya Rahane, who scored 18, trudging back to the pavilion early in the final session of play.Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin did put together a 52-run partnership for the sixth wicket but their departure once again saw India lose their way.Santner, who was given the second new ball along with Boult in the 81st over, struck soon to get the wicket of Rohit Sharma for 35.Sharma, who had survived a strong lbw appeal against Craig earlier in his innings, played a mistimed shot to mid-on.Ashwin scored a well-made 40 with the help of seven boundaries before falling to Boult.India, who took tea at 185 for four, lost five wickets in the final session of play after managing 106 runs in 31 overs.Earlier Rahuls 39-ball 32 entertained the raucous home crowd at Kanpurs Green Park.A host of former Indian Test captains including Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev and Mahendra Singh Dhoni are among those in the crowd to celebrate the milestone match.
