Ronaldo rescues Real Madrid against Sporting Lisbon

Posted:

MADRID, Sept 14, 2016 (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo and Alvaro Morata struck in the closing minutes to seal a stunning Real Madrid comeback to beat Sporting Lisbon 2-1 to start their Champions League defence on Wednesday.Madrid looked to be heading for their first home defeat in the competition for five years after Bruno Cesars low effort three minutes into the second-half handed Sporting a thoroughly merited lead. However, in a frantic finale, Ronaldos free-kick levelled the game in normal time before Morata met James Rodriguezs cross deep into stoppage time to complete a dramatic fightback. We started the game a little passively, Ronaldo told BeIN Sports after netting against the side where he started his career. But football is like this and Real Madrid are like this. The comebacks form part of this legendary stadium.Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane hailed Reals belief despite a sub-par display.I am happy because we have to suffer, but we never gave up, said the Frenchman.I dont know if it was a fair result or not, but we believed until the end. You have to play 90 minutes. The clash pitted two of Europes most in-form teams against one another with Madrid having won 15 La Liga games on top of claiming their 11th Champions League in May, whilst Sporting are on a 13-game winning streak in Portugal.Yet, it was the visitors who looked by far the more confident as they bossed Madrid for the opening hour, to the delight of the boisterous travelling thousands from Lisbon. The pace of Gelson Martins caused the Madrid defence no end of problems and the diminutive winger had the first effort on goal when his low shot was turned away by Kiko Casilla.Reals star front three of Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema started together for the first time this season, but all three looked rusty as a long-range effort from Ronaldo turned over by Rui Patricio was the only serious threat to the Sporting goal before half-time.- Jesus disgruntled -=====================Sporting finally got their reward just three minutes into the second-half when Luka Modric and Sergio Ramos failed to clear and the ball fell kindly for Cesar to curl into the far corner. However, Sporting boss Jorge Jesuss joy was short-lived as he was sent to the stands for protesting a dubious yellow card for William Carvalho.Real Madrid players were talking to the referee and nothing happened to them so I thought it was ok if I did the same thing, said a disgruntled Jesus.I dont know if we would have lost if I was on the bench until the end of the match.Instead it was Jesuss opposite number Zidane who turned the game in Madrids favour with three vital substitutions in the final quarter.Zidane sacrificed Bale, Benzema and Toni Kroos for Lucas Vazquez, Morata and Rodriguez as Madrid piled on the pressure in the final 20 minutes.Ronaldo looked to have missed his chance to net against his boyhood club when he smashed against the post with eight minutes remaining. However, the three-time World Player of the Year, who was given a rousing reception by the Sporting fans before kick-off, curled home a free-kick that just had too much power for his Portuguese international teammate Patricio.Ronaldo refused to celebrate his goal, but there was no shortage of joy just moments later when Morata met Rodriguezs in-swinging cross with a bullet header to deny Sporting in the cruellest of circumstances.Next up for Madrid is a mouth-watering trip to face Borussia Dortmund in a repeat of the 2013 semi-final that Dortmund won 4-3 on aggregate. The Germans got their European campaign off to a flying start with a 6-0 thrashing of Legia Warsaw in the other game in Group F Wednesday.

Uber launches groundbreaking driverless car service

Posted:

PITTSBURGH, Sept 14, 2016 (AFP) - Uber launched a groundbreaking driverless car service Wednesday, jumping ahead of Detroit auto giants and Silicon Valley rivals with technology that could revolutionize transportation. In an ambitious experiment, a fleet of cars laden with lasers, cameras and other sensors -- but with no ones hands on the wheel -- were deployed by the web-based ride service on the challenging roads of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, steering themselves to pick up regular Uber passengers used to being fetched by cars driven by humans.Four of the Ford Fusion hybrids with their ungainly rooftop load of technology were deployed to select customers on Wednesday, with the company showing at least a dozen more ready to put on the streets. And Uber is well-advanced in developing a self-drive car with Swedens Volvo, expected to become the mainstay of the program in the near future.- Solid driving, with help -==============================The cars and their backing technology have been trained on the citys complicated road grid for less than two years. But demonstration rides ahead of the launch showed them very able to handle most situations -- as able as many drivers.Still, just to be sure, the Pittsburgh Uber regulars who summon a driverless car will also get two company technicians with them to make sure everything goes right. One will sit behind the wheel, with hands at the ready to take over in sticky spots, while the other monitors the cars behavior.Uber will not give a timeline, but it aims to reduce that to one technician, still behind the wheel, to intervene and to satisfy existing state policies that require a driver in a car.The goal, Uber officials say, is to get to zero interventions, and no technician along for the ride. The move has put Uber ahead of the rest of the auto industry in getting such cars out for the general public. The major automakers all have driverless car development programs, as do tech giants Google and Apple. And many automakers already have cars on the road with advanced driver assist technology, most notably Tesla.Indeed, Uber itself was beaten to the punch at launching the first driverless call service by the Singapore startup nuTonomy, which put six cars on the road at the end of August. But the Singapore experiment is so far limited to a smallish area on the very flat, well-planned Southeast Asia island. Ubers landscape is the whole of Pittsburgh, a major US city with very steep hills, old narrow streets and multiple bridges and highways built through the middle. What allowed Uber to get to the front of the pack was not auto engineering but rather its ability to accumulate and crunch massive amounts of data on road and driving conditions collected from the billions of miles driven by Uber drivers. We have one of the strongest self-driving engineering groups in the world, as well as the experience that comes from running a ridesharing and delivery network in hundreds of cities, said Uber founder and chief executive Travis Kalanick in a blog post Wednesday.- Future for Uber drivers? -==============================The driverless cars challenge the image of what Uber has become: an app-based service of the gig economy that gave millions of car owners around the world the chance to make money ferrying passengers without taxicab licenses.Just blocks from Ubers new driverless car center in Pittsburgh, a huge billboard pitched for new Uber drivers: Start earning this week it said. But Ubers vision suggests a world of taxis on call by app with no drivers at all. That would be far away, Uber officials stress.Even when these technology issues get fixed, we believe ridesharing will be a mix -- with services provided by both drivers and self-driving Ubers, Kalanick said.Nevertheless, says Anthony Levandowski, Ubers vice president of engineering, Self-driving is core to Ubers mission.Indeed, Levandowski came to Uber when it took over his own startup Otto, which was developing self-driving technology for commercial trucks. The company now has six driverless trucks being tested on California roads.Kalanick says the main aim is to create safer roads by cutting down accidents, freeing space used by surplus private cars, and lowering congestion. As for the driverless cars own safety record, company officials say that so far in Pittsburgh they havent had any accidents. But they have trained the cars minders on how to respond when the inevitable happens.

US gives $181 million in additional relief aid to Iraq

Posted:

BAGHDAD, Sept 14, 2016 (AFP) - The United States on Wednesday announced it was providing $181 million (160 million euros) in additional humanitarian assistance to Iraq ahead of an operation to retake the jihadist hub of Mosul. The announcement was made by US Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken shortly after he arrived in Baghdad for meetings, including with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.Today I am pleased to announce that the United States is providing more than $181 million in additional life-saving assistance to help meet critical humanitarian needs of those displaced by conflict, including those who will be affected as Mosul is liberated, he told reporters.Blinken said the additional funding brought to around $1.1 billion the amount of humanitarian aid from the US to Iraq since 2014, when the Islamic State group took over parts of the country. The United Nations has warned that an upcoming military operation on Mosul -- Iraqs second city and IS last remaining major stronghold in the country -- could displace up to one million people. The new funding... will enable humanitarian workers to preposition emergency food supplies and basic relief items, Blinken said.He said it would also provide for health care and education, as well as camp management, which was identified as a major flaw during the displacement that resulted from an operation to retake the city of Fallujah in June.Blinken said Iraqi forces backed by the US-led coalition had retaken 50 percent of the territory IS held in Iraq two years ago and added that nearly a million displaced people had been able to return to their homes in liberated areas.Ultimately however, victory against Daesh (IS) on the battlefield is necessary but not sufficient to give citizens the confidence, the support and the services they need to return home, he said. The aid community has said that aid appeals remain massively under-funded, leaving the country unprepared for what the UN has warned could be Iraqs biggest humanitarian crisis yet.Abadi has promised Mosul would be retaken by the end of the year but the scope of the humanitarian needs and the difficulty of bringing all political forces together could make that deadline a hard one to meet.Around 3.4 million Iraqis have been displaced since the start of 2014.

The winner will meet either defending champions Great Britain or Argentina in Novembers final.

Oil prices drop as Libya moves to boost exports

Posted:

NEW YORK, Sept 14, 2016 (AFP) - World crude prices sank Wednesday as Libyas state oil company said it would double production within four weeks after rebels handed it control of the vital Oil Crescent ports. Also supporting prices was the weekly US oil reserves report, which showed an unexpectedly sharp increase in stockpiled refined products while crude stocks were only slightly lower.US crude benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for delivery in October fell $1.32 to $43.58 a barrel. In London, Brent North Sea crude for November delivery lost $1.25 to $45.85 a barrel. The fall came after Libyas National Oil Corporation said it would start working immediately to restore exports from the key ports that were seized from the government by rival troops on Sunday and Monday, threatening the countrys financial lifeblood. On Tuesday the rebels said they would turn the ports over to NOC.Shortly after that NOC Chairman Mustafa Sanalla said in a statement that it could raise production from the current 290,000 barrels a day to 600,000 barrels within four weeks. By the end of the year, he said, NOC could by production 950,000 barrels a day. That would add a substantial supply of crude to world markets even as the OPEC cartel and Russia are to hold talks this month on capping output.Sanalla stressed in a statement that meeting those goals depends on the Oil Crescent ports and the closed pipelines in the southwest being opened and kept open.Meanwhile the US Department of Energy reported Wednesday that commercial crude inventories fell about 600,000 barrels in the week to September 9, but that a jump in stored refined products meant the overall petroleum stocks balance jumped by 6.0 million barrels. The oil report was not as bullish as the headline number may have suggested, so concerns about oversupply remain firmly in place, City Index oil analyst Fawad Razaqzada told AFP.Not only did stocks of gasoline and distillates rise sharply, crude production was up for the first time in four weeks, too.
