Trump surrrogate warns of taco epidemic if Republicans lose

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - If the United States fails to crack down on immigration, according to the Donald Trump camp, the nation will be inundated with criminals, illicit drugs and job-stealers.And tacos. The popular Mexican dish that includes a tortilla shell filled with meat, vegetables and cheese is the latest threat facing Americans if the Republican presidential candidate loses, the co-founder of Latinos for Trump told MSNBC.My culture is a very dominant culture. It is imposing and its causing problems, Marco Gutierrez said Thursday. If you dont do something about it, youre going to have taco trucks (on) every corner. The earnest warning unleashed a flurry of social media activity, with many Americans relishing in the idea of life in a country where taco trucks rule the streets.A chicken in every pot, a car in every garage, & TacoTrucksOnEveryCorner, comedian and actor Orlando Jones tweeted, using a hashtag that quickly went viral. If this is wrong. Then I dont want to be right. ImWithHer, tweeted another user, using Clintons campaign slogan. The post included an image of breakfast tacos, a Texas morning staple that often includes eggs and chorizo sausage.Gutierrezs alert came the night after Trump delivered a fiery speech outlining his harsh immigration plan, which would include stepping up deportations, cancelling President Barack Obamas executive orders protecting millions of undocumented migrants, and blocking federal funding to so-called sanctuary cities that bar discrimination against the undocumented. His rival Hillary Clinton has expressed support for a pathway to citizenship for most of Americas undocumented. Her campaign called Trumps plan part of his campaign of hate.In his darkest speech yet, Donald Trump doubled down on his anti-immigrant rhetoric and attempted to divide communities by pitting people against each other and demonizing immigrants, it said in a statement.TacoTrucksOnEveryCorner is not the first time the internet has had a field day with taco symbolism this campaign season. On May 5 -- the Cinco de Mayo holiday that commemorates Mexican resistance -- Trump posted a photograph of himself tucking into a taco salad, a dish of American origin.Under the picture the billionaire wrote: Happy CincoDeMayo The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love HispanicsMany considered the tweet a weak attempt at wooing the important Hispanic-American voting bloc, which Trump has largely alienated. The billionaire candidate launched his campaign last year by declaring that Mexico was sending rapists and other criminals across the border.

French farmers protest EU farm talks at Loire chateau

Posted:

CHAMBORD (AFP) - Hundreds of struggling French farmers protested Friday outside a meeting of EU agriculture ministers at the giant Loire Valley chateau of Chambord. Holding a crisis meeting in the sumptuous Chambord chateau is a provocation, or at the very least tactless, Bernard Lannes, head of the farmers union Coordination Rurale, told AFP.Our agriculture is on its knees, Lannes said as some 350 farmers joined the demonstration and shared a large peoples meal under the windows of the European lords -- in the words of the Coordination Rurales call for the demonstration. They brought along a fibreglass sculpture of a cow painted in the French national colours and bearing the slogan Le Lait Equitable (equitable milk). The union is demanding a one-off payment of 500 euros ($560) per hectare (about 2.5 acres) for farmers who have endured what it says is the worst year since World War II because of adverse weather and tumbling prices for their production. The milk sector has been especially hard hit, with French and other European producers saying current retail prices scarcely cover production costs, never mind allowing for distribution costs and profit. The abolition of European Union milk quotas in April 2015 helped trigger the collapse in prices that have not recovered despite an initial aid package agreed in September 2015.Currently, its the farmers who are sacrificing while the others are profiting, Lannes said, pointing to banks, insurance companies, cooperatives, agribusiness, and large retailers. It cant go on like this. The EU ministers, meeting to discuss the future of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in the wake of Britains vote to exit the bloc, are living the life of the chateau while farmers are dying, Lannes said.Another farmers union, the Confederation Paysanne, demonstrated in the nearby city of Blois, where around 120 protesters pressed their demand for real European regulation for farmers in distress.Several hundred police provided security for the ministerial meeting at Chambord, keeping protesters out of sight.Built as a hunting lodge for King Francis I, the massive 16th-century Renaissance chateau and its grounds are ringed by a 32-kilometre (20-mile) wall. The ministers agreed Friday to maintain the CAP despite the Brexit vote. There will not be a CAP-exit, French Agriculture Minister Stephane Le Foll said, flanked by 19 counterparts who attended the Chambord meeting. The 1962 accord, which covers farm aid and accounts for about a third of EU spending is an integral part of the European project, Le Foll said.

World oil prices rise on Putin remarks

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil futures rose on Friday following remarks from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who said he believed Russia and other producing nations should freeze output to stabilize long-suffering oil prices. The statements ran counter to views attributed the day before to Russias oil minister which appeared to cast doubt on the need for any production freeze. Putin and Alexander Novak, the energy minister, were also quoted Friday as saying that Russian production would increase this year.In New York, a barrel of West Texas Intermediate for October delivery rose $1.28 to close at $44.44.North Sea Brent, also for October delivery, gained $1.38, settling at $46.83 per barrel on the Intercontinental Exchange in London. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries is scheduled to convene late this month in Algeria and oil prices have fluctuated on speculation that the cartel could agree to limit supply. In an interview with Bloomberg published Friday, Putin said he believed Russia and OPEC, which together produce half the worlds oil, should agree to freeze production and that any disagreement with Iran over the issue could be overcome.Iran has pledged to increase its production to pre-sanctions levels of 4 million barrels per day. From the viewpoint of economic sense and logic, then it would be correct to find some sort of compromise, Putin told Bloomberg. I am confident that everyone understands that.Efforts to reach a similar agreement collapsed in April when top producer Saudi Arabia balked at Irans insistence on returning to prior output levels.Jason Schenker of Prestige Economics told AFP that, after losses earlier in the week, the dollars fluctuations on currency markets had helped oil prices rise.Next week we are going to see it move lower, he said of the dollar.

Dollar gains vs euro, yen on mediocre US jobs report

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US dollar gained on the euro and yen Friday after a lackluster US jobs report that supported a Federal Reserve rate rise later this year but not necessarily this month. The US economy pumped out 151,000 net new jobs in August, below the 180,000 expected. It was a solid number, and analysts split on whether it was enough for the Fed to act at its meeting later this month.Although the data wasnt as strong as the market had expected, it was pretty much good enough that there is a possibility of a Fed hike in September, said Boris Schlossberg of BK Asset management. But Unicredits Harm Bandholz said the jobs number was not as high as the Fed is looking for, and that he expects the Fed to act in December. As the August numbers have tended to come in on the softer side in the past, we think that this mostly reflects seasonal adjustment problems rather than underlying weakness, he said in a note. The dollar hit a one-month high against the yen at 103.99 yen. It fell slightly on the pound, to $1.3294.

Tennis: Djokovic through to US Open last 16

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Defending champion Novak Djokovic reached the US Open last 16 in just 32 minutes Friday when Mikhail Youzhny retired at 2-4 down in the first set of their third round clash.Russian 34-year-old Youzhny had needed treatment on a left leg injury after five games and called it quits just a game later. The outcome completed a bizarre first week for world number one Djokovic who was also champion in New York in 2011.After labouring over four sets to beat Jerzy Janowicz on Monday, he was handed a walkover into the third round when Czech opponent Jiri Vesely withdrew from their second round clash with an arm injury.I have never had this happen before in my career, getting a walkover and the next match lasting just half an hour, said Djokovic who faces either John Isner of the United States or Britains Kyle Edmund for a quarter-final slot.I wish Mikhail a speedy recovery. He said he carried the injury into the match. The brief encounter for Djokovic had been preceded on Arthur Ashe Stadium by womens eighth seed Madison Keys pulling off an epic comeback to beat Japans Naomi Osaka.Keys won the latest-ever finishing womens match at the tournament on Monday when she completed victory over compatriot Alison Riske at 1:48am.On Friday, the 21-year-old was involved in more drama when she rallied from 1-5 down in the final set to defeat Osaka 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7/3).The 18-year-old Osaka was so traumatised by her failure to convert her dominance into victory that she broke down in tears as she twice tried and failed to serve for the victory. This is the greatest comeback of my career, hands down, said Keys who will face two-time runner-up Caroline Wozniacki for a quarter-final spot.Jack Sock, the American 26th seed, reached the fourth round for the first time by knocking out 2014 champion Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in tie where he did not face a single break point. The 23-year-old Sock, whose last two appearances at the US Open had ended in retirements, goes on to face French ninth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.Tsonga, a two-time quarter-finalist, made the last 16 with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) victory over South Africas Kevin Anderson.Wozniacki, who knocked out ninth-seeded former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the second round, clinched a seventh win in seven meetings over unorthodox Monica Niculescu of Romania. The Danes 6-3, 6-1 victory featured eight breaks of serve.Roberta Vinci, the Italian seventh seed and runner-up to compatriot Flavia Pennetta in 2015, overcame a second set blip to defeat 21-year-old Carina Witthoeft 6-0, 5-7, 6-3.The 33-year-old Vinci led 5-4, 30-0 in the second set before her 84th-ranked German opponent dug deep to take the tie into a decider. But Vinci prevailed on the back of 40 winners and will meet Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine for a quarter-final place.Tsurenko, the world 99, made the last 16 at a Slam for the first time by beating 12th seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.The 27-year-old Tsurenko committed 44 unforced errors. Fortunately for her, newly-married Cibulkova hit 54.Latvias Anastasija Sevastova backed up her shock victory over third seed and French Open champion Garbine Muguruza by making the last 16 for the first time with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Kateryna Bondarenko of the Ukraine.World number 48 Sevastova, who briefly retired in 2013, has matched her best run at a Slam and next faces British 13th seed Johanna Konta who put out Belinda Bencic 6-2, 6-1.Later Friday, Rafael Nadal, the 2010 and 2013 champion, takes a 3-0 lead over Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia into their night-time clash on Arthur Ashe Stadium.German second seed and Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber closes the night session against American 17-year-old CiCi Bellis.

Tennis: Wozniacki, Vinci into US Open fourth round

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Former runners-up Caroline Wozniacki and Roberta Vinci reached the US Open last-16 on Friday as two-time champions Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal prepared to push into the second week.Wozniacki, who knocked out ninth-seeded former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the second round, clinched a seventh win in seven meetings over unorthodox Monica Niculescu of Romania. The Danes 6-3, 6-1 victory on Arthur Ashe Stadium, which featured eight breaks of serve, was another noise-affected affair. But instead of a din caused by chattering fans or rain on the roof, this time it concerned Wozniacki complaining that her opponent was making too much noise every time she employed her bizarre forehand slice. The former world number ones complaints helped extend the crucial ninth game of the opening set to 12 minutes. Its fun but also frustrating, said 2009 and 2014 runner-up Wozniacki of her opponents unusual style. She makes you feel as if you cant play tennis. You have to grind it out; its not pretty but you get a good workout as you have to run a lot.Wozniacki, whose ranking has slipped to 74 after a long absence to fight an ankle injury, goes on to face either US eighth seed Madison Keys or Naomi Osaka of Japan for a quarter-final slot.Vinci, the Italian seventh seed and runner-up to compatriot Flavia Pennetta in 2015, overcame a second set blip to defeat 21-year-old Carina Witthoeft 6-0, 5-7, 6-3.The 33-year-old Vinci led 5-4, 30-0 in the second set before her 84th-ranked German opponent dug deep to take the tie into a decider. But Vinci prevailed on the back of 40 winners and will meet either Slovakias Dominika Cibulkova or Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine for a quarter-finl place.I got nervous when I served for the match, it was very dangerous, said the Italian who stunned Serena Williams in the semi-finals 12 months ago.But I just told myself lets start again, dont think about the second set.Latvias Anastasija Sevastova backed up her shock win over third seed and French Open champion Garbine Muguruza by making the last 16 for the first time with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Kateryna Bonaderenko of the Ukraine.World number 48 Sevastova, who briefly retired from the sport in 2013, has matched her best run at a Slam -- a fourth round spot at the Australian Open in 2011.Later Friday, Djokovic, well rested after not playing since Monday, resumes his title defence against fiery Russian Mikhail Youzhny, a two-time semi-finalist in New York.World number one Djokovic claimed a laboured win over Polands Jerzy Janowicz in his opening match in which he required treatment on his right upper arm.Fortunately for the two-time champion, he was able to rest up for the rest of the week after scheduled second round opponent Jiri Vesely handed him a walkover into the third round.Youzhny, 34, and nicknamed Colonel by his fans, made the last-four in New York in 2006 and 2010 and is ranked at 61 in the world having been as high as eight in 2008.Youzhny will start as the underdog against Djokovic, against whom he has a 3-6 losing record with his last win coming six years ago. However, he did take a set off the Serb in the US Open quarter-finals in 2013.Nadal, the 2010 and 2013 champion, takes a 3-0 lead over Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia into their night-time clash on Arthur Ashe Stadium.German second seed and Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber closes the night session against American 17-year-old CiCi Bellis, the youngest player left in the womens draw.Victory for Kerber would take her to a season-leading 50 wins for 2016.Elsewhere, the tussle for last-16 spots sees 2014 champion Marin Cilic facing Americas Jack Sock while American number one John Isner meets British outsider Kyle Edmund.

Tennis: No drama as Konta races into US Open fourth round

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Two days after collapsing in the New York heat en route to a three-set second-round victory, Britains Johanna Konta reached the US Open round of 16 with no fuss. The 13th-seeded Briton, who broke through for her first WTA title in Stanford in July, overwhelmed 24th-seeded Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic 6-2, 6-1.She fired 29 winners against Bencic, who bore little resemblance to the youngster who reached the quarter-finals in 2014.I felt I did a good job just staying focused on the things I want to execute and how I wanted to play, Konta said. I definitely made it hard for her to get into the match, I felt.At no time during her 52 minutes on court did Konta seem to feel any ill-effects from the second-round scare that saw her slump gasping to the court, her body shaking, as she served to try to force a second-set tiebreaker in what evolved into a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Tsvetana Pironkova on Wednesday.Konta, who said she was embarrassed by the drama of the incident, was pleased that she was able to move on successfully.I think Im still constantly working on recovering, she said. I think its a management process more than anything. But I feel good. I feel well enough to play. She has now matched her best US Open performance -- last years run to the round of 16 after qualifying into the main draw.Next up as she tries to improve on her best Grand Slam showing, a semi-final run at the Australian Open in January, is Anastasija Sevastova, the 48th-ranked Latvian who toppled French Open champion Garbine Muguruza before beating Kateryna Bondarenko in the third round.Im really happy with how I was able to just really focus on the match at hand and the work at hand and then put all else out of my mind.
