Former British PM David Cameron quits politics

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Britains former prime minister David Cameron resigned his seat in the House of Commons on Monday, less than three months after losing an EU referendum in which he had campaigned to stay in the bloc.Cameron stepped down as prime minister in June, hours after Britains dramatic vote to leave the European Union (EU), handing power to his successor Theresa May in July. The circumstances of my resignation as prime minister and the realities of modern politics make it very difficult to continue (in parliament)... without the risk of becoming a diversion, Cameron said in a statement.I fully support Theresa May and have every confidence that Britain will thrive under her strong leadership, the 49-year-old added. The former premier was pilloried after the shock referendum defeat.Critics accused him of recklessness in holding the vote in the first place and mismanaging the Remain campaign in the face of anti-EU populism. His decision to stage the referendum was seen in Westminster as a bid to placate eurosceptic opponents in the centre-right Conservative Party. His resignation from parliament is unusually quick -- former prime ministers have typically retained their seats for a number of years after leaving office.Cameron denied it was linked to Mays decision last week to let state-funded schools reintroduce selection by academic ability, a controversial move he opposed during his six years in office. This decision has got nothing to do with any one individual issue and that way the timing I promise is coincidental, he told broadcaster ITV in an interview.Obviously I have my own views about certain issues. People know that. Thats really the point. As a former PM its very difficult to sit as a backbencher and not be an enormous diversion and distraction from what the government is doing, he said.May wished Cameron well for the future in a brief statement on Facebook.I was proud to serve in David Camerons government -- and under his leadership we achieved great things, the former interior minister wrote.- A life outside Westminster -================================The suave Eton-educated Cameron has been MP for Witney in the rural county of Oxfordshire, northwest of London, since 2001.At the time of his resignation as premier, he insisted he was keen to continue as a constituency MP and intended to seek re-election at the next general election, due in 2020.He is not known to have taken on any other roles since stepping down. His media appearances since have been in pictures of him holidaying with his family.Obviously Im going to have to start to build a life outside Westminster, he told ITV.Im only 49 and I hope I can still contribute in terms of public service and contribute to our country, he said.Camerons decision was welcomed by allies. His former finance minister and right hand man George Osborne, who was excluded from the cabinet by May, called it a sad day on Twitter.I know how difficult this decision has been for him, Osborne said.Former foreign secretary William Hague added it was the right decision, writing: Former Prime Ministers are either accused of doing too little or being a distraction.Boris Johnson -- the current foreign secretary who played an instrumental role in the Leave campaign -- praised Cameron on Twitter: Sad to see @David_Cameron standing down:modernising Tory party - delivered sustained economic recovery - incredible record of public service.Angela Eagle, a senior lawmaker in the main opposition Labour party, told the BBC that Cameron had put his whole country at risk to settle a debate in his own party through the EU referendum. He has now walked away leaving others to clear up the mess, she added. The pro-Brexit Daily Mail newspaper reported the resignation as The Crushing of David Cameron on its front page, saying his legacy was in ruins.Despite Camerons denial he quit in response to Mays school reform, The Times said the former prime minister wants the freedom to speak out on the matter. The Daily Telegraph, popular among Conservative voters, said Cameron quit to avoid split with May.Camerons decision to resign triggers an obscure parliamentary procedure, because lawmakers are technically not able to resign. He was named as Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead and a by-election to pick his successor will be held.

Hillary Clinton sidelines by pneumonia, eyes campaign return

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Hillary Clinton sought to draw a line Monday under the health scare rocking her White House campaign, assuring supporters she will return to the fray this week as her team stated she has no medical ailments other than pneumonia.Clinton was set to get a boost Tuesday, when President Barack Obama will hit the campaign trail to support her bid to replace him.Facing intensifying scrutiny about her health, the Democrat will also make new disclosures of medical records and data, as her team acknowledged it stumbled when it failed to transparently alert the press and public about Clintons condition at the weekend.I felt dizzy and I did lose my balance for a minute, but once I got in (the van), once I could sit down, once I could cool off, once I had some water, I immediately started feeling better, Clinton told CNN, adding that she would be back on the campaign trail within the next couple of days.Clinton, 68, fell ill at a 9/11 memorial event in New York and was seen wobbling as she was helped into her vehicle, forcing her campaign to disclose she had been diagnosed with the acute respiratory infection. The incident -- captured on amateur video -- gave her Republican rival Donald Trump, 70, a new opening to question her fitness for the nations highest office as the race heats up with eight weeks until Election Day.The campaign said she felt overheated, then released a statement by her personal doctor, Lisa Bardack, revealing that Clinton had been diagnosed with pneumonia Friday and was suffering from dehydration.Theres no other undisclosed condition. The pneumonia is the extent of it, Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon told MSNBC.On CNN, Clinton initially said that she has twice gotten dehydrated and felt dizzy over the past five years, then said it had been a few times.Clinton was forced to scrap her California fundraising trip Monday and Tuesday. And the campaign acknowledged, just as Clinton was tweeting, that she will not attend her scheduled campaign event Wednesday in Nevada -- with Bill Clinton due to stump there on her behalf according to an aide to the former president. In his first public comments since Clinton abruptly left Sundays Ground Zero ceremony, an unusually restrained Trump offered her his wishes for a rapid recovery. But he also suggested the former secretary of states health issues were of longer standing than admitted.Something is going on but I just hope she gets well and gets back on the trail, and well be seeing her at the debate in two weeks, the Republican told Fox News. The unexpected turn of events has turned a conservative angle of attack into a serious line of questioning about Clintons health and why it took two days to reveal the pneumonia diagnosis.Antibiotics can take care of pneumonia. Whats the cure for an unhealthy penchant for privacy that repeatedly creates unnecessary problems? asked David Axelrod, a former White House aide to Barack Obama, on Twitter.Clinton admitted: If we werent fast enough, you know, Ive talked to my staff, we, you know, take responsibility for that. But she quickly insisted she has been far more transparent than Trump. The information is out there. You cant say the same thing about Donald Trump, she said. The American people deserve to know what hes up to and what he is hiding.- Not the first time -========================The episode has fueled fresh speculation and conspiracy theories on the internet, already awash with unsubstantiated rumors Clinton may have a brain tumor, Parkinsons or dementia. The root of persistent claims about Clintons health lies in 2012, toward the end of her tenure as secretary of state.A stomach virus and dehydration prompted her to faint, causing what her doctor said was a concussion. Doctors said they found a blood clot on the brain. Clinton later received the all-clear.On Monday, Fallon insisted that there was nothing here in terms of anything that was caused by what happened in 2012.He also said Clintons team would be releasing medical records in the next few days in order to further put to rest any lingering concerns about what you saw yesterday.Trump also promised to release medical records once test results are back. The former first lady has dismissed rumors about her health, but Trump has repeatedly raised doubts about Clintons stamina and physical strength, and he questioned her campaigns account of the current episode. They say pneumonia on Friday, but she was coughing very, very badly a week ago and even before that if you remember, and this was not the first time, he told CNBC.- Hard time keeping up -==========================Clinton spokesman Fallon said several senior Clinton collaborators at campaign headquarters in Brooklyn also fell ill in recent weeks, including campaign manager Robby Mook. But it was not known if that was the source of Clintons infection.Democrats including her running mate Tim Kaine rushed to her defense. Her energy staggers me, he told a crowd in Dayton, Ohio. I have a hard time keeping up with her.

Buttler stands by captain Morgan over tour call

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Eoin Morgan is very much still the captain of the England one-day international cricket team says the man who stepped in to replace him for the tour of Bangladesh Jos Buttler.Morgan and batsman Alex Hales both decided not to go on the tour as they were concerned, despite reassurances from team security chief Reg Dickason after he came back from a fact finding trip, over their safety. The tour -- which begins on September 30 and will include two Tests and three ODIs -- had been called into question after an attack on a cafe in Dhaka in July which saw 20 hostages killed, including 18 foreigners.Morgan especially came in for some criticism over his decision -- former captains Michael Vaughan and Nasser Hussain leading the charge with both questioning whether he could resume being skipper.Test captain Alistair Cook by contrast has said he will skipper the side against the Bangladeshis. However, Buttler said the former captains speculation over Morgans future was nonsense.Hes very much still the captain of the England ODI side, said Buttler.Hes done a fantastic job over the last 18 months.Hes been one of the main reasons, if not the main reason, for the turnaround in fortunes. The style of cricket hes got the side playing is something we want to continue and keep playing that brand of cricket, added the 26-year-old.Buttler, who made his ODI debut back in 2012, said Morgan would have not taken the decision lightly. There has been some unfair criticism, he said.Cricket is not the be-all and end-all.He has made the decision that is right for him and it is not one he has taken lightly. He has come to one which he is comfortable with and people should respect that.Reading things in the press and having a lot of information about it, you do have some worries. But you try and think long and hard about it, let the dust settle for a bit and try and work through it logically. For me personally Im happy to go.Its a completely individual position, as it has to be; people are different and view things differently - and everyone completely respects that it is a personal decision.Last week saw Morgan outline his concerns, with the 30-year-old Irishman saying he had been influenced by a bomb exploding at a 2010 Indian Premier League match in Bangalore that he was involved in and the violent background to his brief spell in the 2013/14 Dhaka Premier Division.Morgan, has however, since returned to India for further spells in the lucrative IPL.

Oil prices gain despite rising OPEC supply forecast

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices rose on Monday, joining the positive movement on equities markets despite a new forecast from producing countries for supplies to grow in 2017.A barrel of West Texas Intermediate for October delivery rose 41 cents to close at $46.29 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, North Sea Brent rose 31 cents to finish at $48.32 per barrel for November delivery. In its monthly market report, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries on Monday revised its 2017 forecast for non-OPEC oil supplies upwards by 350,000 barrels per day, indicating that, rather than contracting, supplies will now in fact grow by 200,000 to an average 56.5 million barrels per day. This years upward revision is due to US production holding up better than expected, while non-OPEC supply next year is set to get a boost from new production at Kazakhstans Kashagan oil field, Matt Smith of ClipperData noted in a blog post.Russian officials are due to join an informal OPEC meeting this month at which producing countries have suggested officials may discuss limiting production to stabilize world prices. In closely watched remarks on Monday, US Federal Reserve Governor Lael Brainard painted a dovish picture of the US economy, saying prudence was still required before removing the Feds current accommodative interest rate policies.Changes in interest rate policy can influence demand for the US dollar and its value on currency exchange markets, which affects sales of dollar-denominated oil futures.Fed policymakers are due to meet next week to review interest rate levels and markets but have deen divided on the need for a near-term rate hike.Markets did not react strongly to Brainards remarks, which may have relieved some worries that the Fed could raise rates as soon as next week. More hawkish remarks on Friday from Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren sent stock markets tumbling by two percent.Following Brainards speech at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, Fed futures prices showed an 85 percent probability that the current target rate of 0.25-0.5 percent will remain unchanged following next weeks meeting, up from 76 percent Friday.

Brendon Rodgers calls Luis Suarez best striker in the world

Posted:

BARCELONA (AFP) - Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers labelled Barcelonas Luis Suarez as the best striker in the world ahead of the Scottish champions daunting task of stopping Suarez, Lionel Messi and Neymar in their Champions League opener on Tuesday.Rodgers worked with Suarez for two years at Liverpool as the Uruguayans 31 goals nearly carried the English side to their first Premier League title in for 24 years in 2014.However, Rodgers admitted Suarez has gone to another level alongside Messi and Neymar in forming what the Northern Irishman described as one of the most deadly strike forces in football history. We respect that this is arguably the best team in the world with maybe the best front three of all-time, Rodgers said at the Camp Nou on Monday.I know from working with Luis he used to occupy a four or five-man defence on his own, so if you put Neymar and Messi into that it is a very difficult task.In this moment in time Luis is the best striker in the world there is no question about that.First of all you have to speak about the man. He is one of the most beautiful men you can come across. Hes very humble guy, super professional, a family man who gives everything for his life as a footballer.I had the pleasure of working with Luis for two years. He is the best in the world. The biggest compliment you can pay him is he came to an already world class team and made them better.Barca now wouldnt be the same team without Luis in the team.Celtic are huge underdogs to progress in a group that also contains Pep Guardiolas Manchester City and Borussia Moenchengladbach. However, the sides suffered contrasting fortunes at the weekend as Celtic thrashed old rivals Rangers 5-1 in the first league meeting between the two for four years, whilst Barca slumped to a shock 2-1 home defeat to newly-promoted Alaves. It can be positive, but also you can waken up a team with a result like that, added Rodgers.Luis (Enrique) made a number of changes to the team. Every manager picks the team to get the result and of course they will be disappointed. When you work with big players they always want to make amends.Enrique was in the firing line after leaving Messi and Suarez on the bench among seven changes for the Alaves clash. However, he expects the Spanish champions to suffer no after-effects when back close to full-strength on Tuesday. The team has reacted well. They are obviously annoyed because we dont like and are not accustomed to losing at home, said Enrique. We have the shortest turnaround you can have between games. The players are rested and desperate to compete and play again in the Camp Nou in a competition that excites us.Barca beat Celtic as recently as July 3-1 in a pre-season friendly in Dublin. However, Enrique expects a very different clash with Champions League points at stake. It helps to have played them in pre-season, but in terms of intensity and fighting for the three points there is a huge difference, added Enrique. And he lauded the impact made by Rodgers in his short time in charge at Celtic in leading the Scottish champions back into the Champions League for the first time in three years. He loves good football, he is a coach that likes to play on the front foot, to take the game to the opposition and you can see that already in his short time at Celtic. They have made good signings and have players that will cause us problems. I Like Rodgers as a coach and his idea of how to play football.Enriques only injury doubt comes in goal. Dutch stopper Jasper Cillessen made his debut on Saturday, but Marc-Andre ter Stegen trained fully on Monday and could make an earlier than expected return from a hamstring injury.

Arsenal looking for improvement against PSG in Champions League

Posted:

PARIS, Sept 12, 2016 (AFP) - Arsene Wenger is looking for Arsenal to show greater consistency in the Champions League, starting with a positive result when they begin their campaign at Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.A year ago the Gunners lost their opening two group games before scraping through to the last 16 behind Bayern Munich, only to fall at that stage for the sixth year running. The key to returning to the latter stages is winning Group A to thereby set up an easier draw in the first knockout round, and so taking points off the French champions at the Parc des Princes could be crucial.Last year we had a bad start because we lost our first game at Dinamo Zagreb and after we had the hiccup at home against Olympiakos and Bayern was a bit more consistent, Wenger said at a press conference on Monday. What we need to do to win the group is make a good result here tomorrow. The last time Arsenal won their Champions League group was in 2011/12, when they finished ahead of another French side in Marseille. With Basel and Ludogorets Razgrad completing the Group A line-up, the Gunners and the French champions are expected to be fighting it out for first place. While Wengers side are fresh from back-to-back Premier League wins against Watford and Southampton, PSG have been in poor form under their new coach Unai Emery. They followed a 3-1 defeat at Monaco before the recent international break by drawing 1-1 at home to Saint-Etienne on Friday, but Wenger remains wary of them. They are a bit like us with a number of players who came back a bit late (from summer holidays), so they have had to an extent the same problems as us, Wenger said. They were in the same hotel as us in Los Angeles when Thiago Silva got injured and he has still not come back, but I am not too worried for them because they have been well above the rest of the teams in their league in recent years and I expect to see a different PSG in the Champions League.- Slow start -==============PSGs fourth consecutive elimination in the quarter-finals of this competition, to Manchester City, ultimately led to Laurent Blanc being sacked in the summer, with Emery replacing him.But pressure is already building on the Spaniard after their slow start to the Ligue 1 campaign.I have come here with my experience and with a lot of demands. The demand on me is to win and that is no different to when I started out in Spain 12 years ago, said Emery. The 44-year-old won the Europa League with Sevilla in each of the last three seasons but has no real track record in the Champions League.I accept my responsibility, but I need time. I am convinced we are going to improve and Tuesday is the first chance to show that. The most important thing is the team and I am happy with what I see, added Emery.Paris have selection problems in defence with Layvin Kurzawa out injured and captain Silva not having featured this season due to fitness concerns of his own.Hatem Ben Arfa is also absent, and youngster Presnel Kimpembe could start at left-back.Meanwhile, Zlatan Ibrahimovics departure does not diminish Paris as an attacking force in the eyes of Arsenals Spanish full-back Hector Bellerin. They have lots of good players so I dont think it affects them at all, said Bellerin. They have a really strong front three at the moment and you know any player they have up front will be dangerous. We will approach the game in the same way as if he had been there.Laurent Koscielny is expected to play for Arsenal despite taking a knock to the face in Saturdays last-gasp 2-1 win over Southampton.
