Obama hits at 'unfair' criticism of Clinton

Posted:

PHILADELPHIA, Sept 13, 2016 (AFP) - President Barack Obama made his 2016 solo debut in support of Hillary Clinton Tuesday, hitting out at unfair criticism of the pneumonia-stricken Democratic presidential nominee. After an extremely rough few days for Clinton, Obama used a fiery appearance before a crowd of 6,000 in Philadelphia to try to turn the tables on Donald Trump.Obama insisted that Clinton had been subjected to more scrutiny and... more unfair criticism than anybody out here, while accusing the media of giving her Republican opponent a pass. Our standards for whats normal have changed, Obama said.Donald Trump says stuff everyday that used to be considered as disqualifying for being president. And yet because he says it over and over and over again the press just gives up.Clinton has just suffered perhaps the worst week of her 15-month quest to become Americas first female president. On Friday, she sparked a firestorm when she called half of Trumps supporters deplorables. The 68-year-old was then sidelined from the campaign trail by a bout of pneumonia that has raised broader questions about her health. She was forced to leave a 9/11 memorial event at the Pentagon on Sunday and was seen stumbling limp-legged into a secret service vehicle.Despite leading in the polls, she remains deeply disliked by a swath of the electorate.- Brotherly love -==================Obama was appearing in a city that will be pivotal in deciding the presidential race in Pennsylvania -- a virtual must-win state for Trump on November 8.Nick-named Pennsyltucky for its conservative hinterland, the state is often described as being Philadelphia in the east, Pittsburgh in the west and Alabama in the middle. The race there could come down to whether the Obama coalition -- young, black and Hispanic voters -- turn out to vote. This is a high-stakes election for the 44th president, who could see much of his legacy, from climate deals to health care, eroded by a Republican-run White House. It is good to be back on the campaign trail Obama told the crowd. This not just me going through the motions, I really, really, really want to elect Hillary Clinton.Clinton is set to return to the fray later this week after some rest.In the meantime, her husband Bill takes over for her in California, attending a fundraiser in Los Angeles while his wife rests at their home in Chappaqua, New York per her doctors orders. He also will campaign for her Wednesday in Las Vegas.Clintons stumble -- captured on amateur video -- gave Trump, 70, a new opening to question the former secretary of states fitness for the nations highest office as the race intensifies. While my opponent slanders you as deplorable and irredeemable, I call you hardworking American patriots who love your country and want a better future for all of our people, Trump said in Iowa.- Catastrophic insult -=========================Trumps running mate Mike Pence, the Indiana governor and a former congressman, met with House Republicans on Capitol Hill on Tuesday and said he and the nominee were grateful for the support from GOP lawmakers. But he also turned to Clintons Friday remark that half of Trumps supporters were in a so-called basket of deplorables because they were racist, misogynistic and xenophobic. This was a catastrophic insult to the American people, Pence told reporters as he again demanded Clinton retract those offensive statements and apologize.Clinton has expressed regret for saying half but also said she would not back down from calling out racist rhetoric on the campaign trail.Pence also rejected accusations that Trumps campaign was courting white supremacists including former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, who has endorsed Trump.Donald Trump and I have denounced David Duke repeatedly, Pence said. We have said that we do not want his support, and we do not want the support of people who think like him.The brash billionaires campaign has courted controversy from the start, and sporadic clashes have erupted at his rallies between supporters and anti-Trump protesters. An altercation erupted Monday night at a Trump rally in Asheville, North Carolina, where video shows a Trump supporter, his fists raised, yelling at and pushing a protester before slapping his face.

Facebook, Twitter join coalition to improve news quality on Internet

WASHINGTON, Sept 13, 2016 (AFP) - Facebook, Twitter and news organizations including Agence France-Presse have joined a coalition of media and technology groups seeking to filter out online misinformation and improve news quality on social networks.First Draft News, which is backed by Google, announced Tuesday that some 20 news organizations will be part of its partner network to share information on best practices for journalism in the online age.Jenni Sargent, managing director of First Draft, said the partner network will help advance the organizations goal of improving news online and on social networks.Filtering out false information can be hard. Even if news organizations only share fact-checked and verified stories, everyone is a publisher and a potential source, she said in a blog post.We are not going to solve these problems overnight, but were certainly not going to solve them as individual organizations.Sargent said the coalition will develop training programs and a collaborative verification platform, as well as a voluntary code of practice for online news.We live in a time when trust and truth are issues that all newsrooms, and increasingly the social platforms themselves, are facing, she said. Each partner is committed to sharing knowledge, developing policies and devising training in how journalists use the social web to find and report news. The announcement comes amid concerns over the growing role of social networks, especially Facebook, in delivering and filtering news, and sometimes allowing hoaxes and misinformation to proliferate. The partner network includes Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, The New York Times, Washington Post, BuzzFeed News, CNN, ABC News of Australia, ProPublica, AFP, The Telegraph, France Info, Breaking News, Le Mondes Les Decodeurs, International Business Times UK, Eurovision News Exchange and Al Jazeera Media Network.Other organizations in the network include Amnesty International, European Journalism Centre, American Press Institute, International Fact Checking Network and Duke Reporters Lab.First Draft was formed last year with support from Google News Lab and has worked with YouTube on verifying user-generated videos, among other projects.

Oil prices fall on renewed oversupply worries

Posted:

NEW YORK, Sept 13, 2016 (AFP) - Oil prices finished sharply lower on Tuesday as production forecasts called for a continuing supply glut in 2017.The International Energy Agency, which provides advice to oil-importing countries, said growth in oil demand was slowing while supply was rising, meaning the glut was due to linger at least through the first half of next year. The Paris-based organization had earlier seen the oil oversupply disappearing in the latter part of 2016.On the New York Mercantile Exchange, a barrel of West Texas Intermediate for October delivery fell $1.39 to finish at $44.90.North Sea Brent for November delivery lost $1.22, sinking to $47.10 per barrel on the Intercontinental Exchange in London. The bearish IEA forecast followed Mondays report from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, which revised its 2017 daily production forecast for non-OPEC countries upward. The cartel predicted that supplies would grow by 200,000 barrels per day, with an average production of 56.5 million barrels per day.OPECs members and Russia are due to convene an informal meeting in Algeria this month but investors hopes that they will agree to limit production have dimmed in recent days.We are a little bit lower. I wouldnt get over-panicked, said Bart Melek of TD Securities.Basically the market is believing that there is less of a likelihood that OPEC will come up with some sort of a freeze at a time when Kazakhstan and other areas are increasing production, he added.

Sanchez, Ospina rescue Arsenal in Paris

Posted:

PARIS, Sept 13, 2016 (AFP) - Alexis Sanchez struck with 12 minutes left as Arsenal came from behind to earn an unlikely 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League opener on Tuesday.PSG had led virtually from kick-off, an Edinson Cavani header opening the scoring as the clock ticked onto 42 seconds at the Parc des Princes. The goal was PSGs quickest ever in the Champions League, but the French champions, and Cavani in particular, were guilty of failing to convert a succession of golden opportunities.Chilean forward Sanchez made them pay as he netted the equaliser before both sides ended the game with 10 men after Olivier Giroud and Marco Verratti were each sent off at the death. The result puts Arsenal in a strong position in Group A, with the other game in the section also ending in a 1-1 draw between Basel and Ludogorets Razgrad. We have experience in the Champions League, we were resilient, and we got a good point, said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. When you start so badly against a team of that quality, if you have no experience, if you are too young, you can be caught. But we didnt panic, overall we were resilient enough and resilience is linked with experience.PSG coach Unai Emery added: I am not happy with the result but I am happy with how we played. This is the way we need to play in future.Wenger sprung a surprise in his line-up as he selected David Ospina in goal and left first-choice Petr Cech on the bench. Meanwhile, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Alex Iwobi both started with Theo Walcott missing due to injury.Emery, under pressure after a poor start to the season, made a number of changes to his team too, including recalling Serge Aurier in defence, and the Ivorian was the source of the early opener. With the Arsenal defence still settling, Aurier powered forward from right-back and delivered a cross that was met by a flick of the head from Cavani at the near post, enough to beat Ospina and find the net.It was a dream start for the French champions, quarter-finalists in each of the last four seasons, and for Cavani as he seeks to step up and assume the responsibility of leading the attack following the departure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Uruguayan has always racked up the goals, but he also has a habit of conjuring breathtaking misses and he squandered two golden chances to increase PSGs lead before the interval.First, after showing admirable determination to beat his man to the ball on the edge of the area, he rounded Ospina only to see his shot slip just wide of the post with the goal gaping in the 34th minute. Then, with half-time approaching, he controlled a delightfully flighted pass into the box by Angel Di Maria only to tumble embarrassingly to the ground while attempting a spectacular finish with only the keeper to beat. Before that, only an alert piece of goalkeeping by Ospina prevented Di Maria from scoring direct from a wickedly delivered corner, and Arsenal were lucky to go in at the break just one goal behind.PSGs inability to convert their chances meant the Gunners remained in the game, and Ospina played his part by making decisive interventions in front of Cavani and Di Maria in the second half.Alphonse Areola, playing in goal for PSG for the first time in more than three years, did not have a save to make until the 78th minute, when he blocked brilliantly from Iwobis close-range effort, Arsenals first shot on target all evening. There was nothing he could do, though, to keep out the follow-up from Sanchez. That goal ensured a share of the points, although both teams had chances to win, with Ospina again thwarting Cavani before Areola denied Iwobi at the other end.Giroud and Verratti were both shown second yellow cards in stoppage time for a childish scuffle off the ball.

Barcelona thrash Celtic 7-0 as Messi scores hat-trick

Posted:

BARCELONA (AFP) - Lionel Messi bagged a hat-trick and Neymar grabbed four assists as Barcelona launched their Champions League campaign in style with a 7-0 thrashing of Celtic on Tuesday.Messi and Neymar were reunited with Luis Suarez from the start for the first time this season and took no time in getting reacquainted as all three were on the scoresheet. Two goals from Messi either side of Moussa Dembeles missed penalty for Celtic gave Barca a comfortable half-time lead. And there was no let-up for the Scottish champions after the break as Neymar, Messi, Andres Iniesta and a Suarez double completed the rout.It has been many games since we have been able to enjoy being on the pitch together and today we did, Suarez told TV3.Suarez was lauded as the best striker in the world by Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, who was in charge of the Uruguayan for two years at Liverpool, on the eve of the game. And Rodgers admitted the gulf in class told, but claimed there was no reason for Celtic to be embarrassed. There can be no embarassment because they do that to better teams than ourselves, said Rodgers. They are special players. It is a front three that can occupy as many players as you want.We had a back five, but their movement speed and touch combined, they are world class players and they showed that tonight. However, Barca could face further sanctions from UEFA after thousands of separatist Catalan flags were again flown at the Camp Nou.The Spanish champions were fined 150,000 euros ($170,000) by UEFA for the presence of the flags during last seasons competition, 50,000 euros of which was suspended for two years.Messi had started Saturdays shock 2-1 defeat to Alaves on the bench due to the after-effects of a minor groin injury, but took just three minutes to make his presence felt with a rising drive into the top corner from Neymars lovely through ball. However, Celtic had a great chance to level against the run of play when Dembele surged onto Scott Sinclairs pass and was upended by Marc-Andre ter Stegen.Dembele was Celtics hat-trick hero in a 5-1 thrashing of Glasgow rivals Rangers on Saturday, but he failed to add to his burgeoning reputation as ter Stegen flew to his right to turn the Frenchmans penalty behind. The German keeper has now saved three of the four penalties he has faced in the Champions League.Barca immediately upped a gear and doubled their advantage three minutes later when a sensational exchange of passes between Neymar and Messi freed the latter to tap home his second of the night despite the presence of seven Celtic defenders in the area. The one-way traffic continued after the break as Dorus de Vries could only parry Neymars free-kick into the top corner for his first goal of the season.Iniesta had been introduced at half-time and for all Messis magic, the midfield schemer struck the goal of the night with a ferocious volley from Neymars cross.Suarez showed his unselfishness rather than his killer instinct a minute later by squaring for Messi to roll home and complete his sixth Champions League hat-trick.Suarez did eventually get his goal, though, as he controlled another Neymar chipped pass before swivelling and smashing the ball into the roof of the net past a helpless de Vries. And Messis low cross was prodded home from close range by Suarez to cap a humbling evening for Rodgerss men on their return to the Champions League after a three-year absence.

Mourinho demands Europa reaction after derby defeat

PARIS (AFP) - Fresh from giving his players a rollicking Jose Mourinhos focus turns from Manchester Uniteds derby defeat to European action with a tricky Europa League opener at in-form Feyenoord on Thursday. It will be the Portuguese managers first game in the second-tier European competition since winning its predecessor the UEFA Cup with Porto in 2003 and he says he is taking it seriously.Mourinhos unbeaten start as United manager came to a stuttering stop Saturday as long-time nemesis Pep Guardiolas Manchester City left Old Trafford with a 2-1 victory.United can expect a tough Group A opener at Feyenoord, who are top of the Dutch league having won all five of their matches this season and have pedigree in the competition.Uniteds Spanish attacking midfielder Juan Mata warned that after the disappointment of derby day there was no time for mourning. On Thursday were going to play the first game in the Europa League, away against Feyenoord, a classic in European football, Mata said on his weekly blog. Its going to be a very demanding debut in this competition, he added of the road to the final in Stockholm next May.Mourinho says that young attacking sensation Marcus Rashford will play after his impressive second-half cameo along with midfielder Ander Herrera on Saturday. He (Rashford) is going to play is the only thing I can say. I trust him completely and I know his future will be absolutely brilliant, said the Portuguese, who was scathing of some of his players after the City defeat, particularly defender Eric Bailly.English-Dutch clashes are always feisty affairs but United have beaten Feyenoord in both their previous meetings. This time it will be more subdued -- at least in the stands -- with the capacity of the De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam halved to 26,000 following UEFA sanctions for crowd trouble against Roma earlier this year.United fans, whose ticket allocation has been slashed to 1,400, have been advised by the club not to wear United colours and avoid areas of potential conflict.Feyenoord manager Giovanni Van Bronckhorst said: Im confident that -- in spite of the measures the club has to take -- an atmosphere will be created again at De Kuip to ensure we, as a team, are able to perform at our very best in our home matches.Former United and Feyenoord striker Robin van Persie is set to play both clubs as his Fenerbahce side are also in Group A with the Turkish side taking on Zorya Luhansk of Ukraine in their opener.Van Persie won the competition with boyhood club Feyenoord in 2002.Spanish clubs have won six of the last 10 Europa League titles with Sevilla, the reigning three-time champions, now playing in the elite Champions League.Of the finalists in the Europa League over the last decade eight are from Spain, who this season will be represented by Athletic Bilbao, Celta Vigo and Villarreal.Celta, struggling from five successive La Liga losses, travel to Standard Liege in Group G, which also includes Dutch giants Ajax and Greek club Panathinaikos.Athletic Bilbao travel to Italian side Sassuolo in Group F, which includes Rapid Vienna of Austria and Belgium side KRC Genk. Villarreal host FC Zurich in Group L.Englands second representative, Southampton, host Czech club Sparta Prague in Group K looking for their first win under new boss Claude Puel, with Inter Milan, three times winners, hosting Israeli club Hapoel Beer Sheva.

Sharapova appeal verdict set for October

Posted:

LAUSANNE (AFP) - The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said Tuesday it would deliver an appeal verdict on the two-year doping ban for Maria Sharapova in early October. The 29-year-old Russian tested positive for the banned medication meldonium during Januarys Australian Open. In a severe blow to her reputation, the infringement was revealed in March. The CAS will issue its decision in the arbitration procedure between Maria Sharapova and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) during the first week of October 2016, CAS said in a statement sent from its Lausanne headquarters. The original ruling had been expected by July 18, with Sharapova hoping a successful appeal would allow her to spearhead the Russian tennis team in Rio.Delays have been caused by both parties carefully preparing defences of their position as Sharapova seeks a reduction of the Tribunals decision to sanction her with a two-year period. The two-year ban on the five time grand slam winner who has spent most of her life in the United States was backdated to January 26 this year, when she tested positive for the previously unheralded meldonium. The product had just been added to the world anti-doping WADA list on January 1.Sharapova openly admitted she had been taking it for 10 years to help treat illnesses, a heart issue and a magnesium deficiency. She also claimed it had entirely escaped her attention that the product had been added to the banned substance list. She burst onto the tennis scene by stealing hearts and the title at Wimbledon in 2004 and clinched the US Open in 2006, the Australian Open in 2008 and the French Open in 2012 and 2014.Her ferocity on the court, business acumen and glamorous looks have all combined to make her a marketing juggernaut and the overseer of such successful ventures as her Sugarpova line of candy. She has 35 WTA singles titles and more than $36 million in career earnings.

Asia markets struggle to build on bright star

HONG KONG (AFP) - Asian markets struggled to recover Tuesday from the previous days hammering with soothing comments on US rates from a top Federal Reserve official unable to reassure tetchy traders. While Tokyo and Hong Kong saw mild recoveries from Mondays sharp sell-off there are growing concerns about the future for central bank policy easing after years of cheap cash.Markets globally were sent into a tailspin after Boston Fed president Eric Rosengren and governor Daniel Tarullo on Friday signalled their openness to a September move. But comments from policy board governor Lael Brainard on Monday that the case for lifting borrowing costs early was less compelling provided some much-needed respite, sending US shares rallying. She said the US central bank should adopt a moderate and gradual approach to lifting rates and avoid moves to tighten policy pre-emptively.Most Asian stocks rose early Tuesday but the rally petered out as the day wore on.By the close of trade Tokyo was up 0.3 percent and Seoul added 0.4 percent but Sydney closed down 0.2 percent and Wellington lost 0.4 percent. There were also sharp losses in Singapore and Jakarta. With Brainards remarks, rate-hike expectations have backed down. It seems that the slump in US equities last week was a bit overdone, Toshihiko Matsuno, a senior strategist at SMBC Friend Securities Co. in Tokyo, told Bloomberg News. But the market isnt likely to take on an aggressive buying mode before the results from the (Bank of Japans) and the Feds monetary policy meetings next week.China beats forecastsWith expectations for a rate rise reduced slightly the dollar dipped against its peers, easing to 101.80 yen from 101.85 yen in New York and well off the 102.50 yen mark seen earlier Thursday in Asia. The Australian dollar jumped 0.4 percent, while Malaysias ringgit, the Singapore dollar and Indonesian rupiah also each posted healthy gains. In China the government released another batch of positive data suggesting the worlds number two economy is stabilising.Retail sales, a key measure of consumer spending, and industrial output raced ahead in August from the previous month and beat expectations. Last week investors welcomed strong trade and inflation figures. The figures come as authorities try to move the economy from a reliance on investment spending and exports to one driven more by consumer demand, although the transition has proven bumpy and gross domestic product growth is slowing.Hong Kong was up 0.3 percent in the afternoon, chipping away at the 3.4 percent plunge suffered Monday, with forecast-beating Chinese data providing support. Shanghai ended marginally higher.Though Chinas industrial production and retail sales beat expectations, people wont expect data to continue to improve, Castor Pang, head of research at Core-Pacific Yamaichi Hong Kong, told Bloomberg News. The data also dont signal any intention for economic stimulus, so the market cant rebound strongly. In Seoul Samsung Electronics rallied more than four percent a day after plunging seven percent on the back of an exploding battery crisis in its flagship Note 7 smartphone. The gains also follow news that the firm had offloaded its printer business to US giant HP for more than a billion dollars as it presses ahead with a restructuring drive.
