Sarfraz reckons win will lift Pakistan

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Pakistans Twenty20 captain Sarfraz Ahmed believes the clean sweep over the world champions is the first step towards building a formidable outfit for the future.Pakistan blanked West Indies 3-0 in the Twenty20 series with another dominating eight wicket win in the third and final match in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. They had won the first two matches by nine wickets and 16 runs in Dubai.Ahmed said the win will go a long way towards establishing a Twenty20 team, struggling after being ousted in the first round of the World Twenty20 held in India in March-April this year. That forced the then skipper Shahid Afridi to step down and Ahmed was handed over the leadership, who won all four matches -- also beating England at Manchester earlier this month.Of course, this is the first step towards building a new team, said Ahmed. If we want to become a good team then we have to bring consistency. Both junior and senior players are performing and contributing and that is the sign of a good team.Left-arm spinner Imad Wasim, declared man of the series for his nine wickets in the series, rocked the West Indies top order with figures of 3-21. West Indies below par total of 103-5 was never a bother for Pakistan, who chased down the target in 15.1 overs for the loss of two wickets. All did not go well for the West Indies after winning the World Twenty20 title. World Twenty20 winning captain Darren Sammy was replaced by Carlos Brathwaite while successful coach Phil Simmons was sacked. Ahmed admitted a 3-0 win wasnt expected before the series. We didnt estimate we would win 3-0, said Ahmed. But I will give full credit to the boys for doing everything better than them and thats why we have won the series.Ahmed said he was enjoying the captaincy. Its nice to see senior and juniors cooperating and contributing. Its a combination of juniors and seniors and I am enjoying it as a leader.Pakistan and West Indies will now play three one-day internationals with the first game in Sharjah on Friday. The one-day internationals will be followed by three Tests, the first a day-night game in Dubai from October 13.

Fast-rising Pakistan whitewash West Indies

Posted:

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Pakistan produced another dominating performance to beat world champions West Indies by eight wickets in the third and final Twenty20 international, achieving their first ever clean sweep on Tuesday.Left-arm spinner Imad Wasim chipped in with 3-21 -- nine wickets in the series -- as West Indies crawled to 103-5 in their 20 overs after Pakistan once again caught them napping by putting them in on a slow and low Sheikh Zayed Stadium pitch in Abu Dhabi.Pakistan then wiped off the target with Shoaib Malik, who made 43 not out, hitting the winning six off the first ball of the 15th over. Marlon Samuels scored 42 not out while Kieron Pollard made an unbeaten 16.Credit to the boys to keep their cool in this heat, said Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed. It was a team effort. We knew we shouldnt lose focus coming into this game. The bowlers deserve credit for restricting a good team on a good pitch. We didnt over-attack, whats happening let it happen and its a great win.Pakistan won the first two matches by nine wickets and 16 runs respectively -- both in Dubai. And West Indian skipper Carlos Brathwaite once again blamed poor batting. We didnt bat well in the first six overs in all three games, said Brathwaite, who replaced World Twenty20 winning captain Darren Sammy last month. We never got a competitive total but Pakistan outplayed us in all three games. Its a matter of skill and temperament. We will go back to the drawing board. The low target -- West Indies fourth lowest total in the shortest format -- was never out of Pakistans reach as Babar Zaman (27 not out) and Malik added 68 in quick time to seal the win.Malik hit four boundaries and a six in his 34-ball knock while Azam knocked one boundary in his 24-ball innings.Pakistan had raced to 36 in the sixth over before losing both their openers Sharjeel Khan (11) and Khalid Latif (21) to debutant paceman Kesrick Williams who finished with 2-15.It was another story of sloppy batting by the West Indies who just last month piled up 245-6 against India in a Twenty20 at Lauderhill, Florida. From 12-0 in the first two overs, West Indies lost Johnson Charles for five and Chadwick Walton for a first ball duck -- both to Wasim in the next over.Wasim, who took a career best 5-14 in the first game, then had Dwayne Bravo (11) bowled in his fourth over to rock the West Indies to 31-4.Samuels and Nicholas Pooran (16) added 35 for the fifth wicket but Pakistan continued to press them hard with accurate bowling.Samuels and Pollard added 37 for the unbroken sixth wicket but those runs came in 7.2 slog overs, with only six boundaries and a single six in the entire innings. Pakistan had brought Mohammad Amir and Rumman Raees for the final match, resting Wahab Riaz and Hasan Ali.The two teams will now play a three-match one-day series starting in Sharjah on Friday. They also play three Tests with the first in Dubai -- their first-ever day-night Test -- from October 13.

Dollar slightly higher after Clinton bests Trump in debate

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The US dollar earned a boost Tuesday after Hillary Clinton, who is favored by Wall Street, got the best of rival Donald Trump in the first US presidential debate. Most analysts scored the Democrat, widely seen as a better bet for stable US finances, as the winner over Republican Trump, who lashed out at Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen as a political tool during the heavily televised debate. But most key forex pairs, including the dollar-euro, stayed in narrow bands. The dollar rose to $1.1217 per euro and 100.36 yen, though it gave ground slightly to the pound, which rose to $1.3011.Mr Trump, whose controversial remarks about trade and foreign policy have set investors on edge, was seen as the loser, at least by the measure of reaction in forex where the dollar rallied broadly in relief, said Boris Schlossberg of BK Asset Management. However, perhaps the clearest indication that Mr Trump fared poorly was the two percent jump in the Mexican peso which has come under relentless selling assault over the past several weeks as Mr Trump surged in the polls, he said.

Football: Schuerrle strikes late as Dortmund deny Real

Posted:

DORTMUND (AFP) - Andre Schuerrle rescued Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday with an 87th-minute equaliser to seal a 2-2 draw with Real Madrid and deny the Spaniards a rare Champions League win in Germany.Real were minutes from a first win in Dortmund in six attempts, and the result means the defending champions have won only four times in 30 away games against German clubs.Madrid took the lead when Cristiano Ronaldo netted his 95th Champions League goal early on.Dortmunds Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was credited with the equaliser just before the break after a deflection off Raphael Varane. But the French international enjoyed second-half redemption when he stabbed home on 68 minutes before Dortmund levelled in the dying stages. If you come back twice against Real Madrid, thats a nice feeling. That will help the team to grow together, said Schuerrle, who had come off the bench to equaliser. When you concede three minutes from the end it hurts, especially given the effort the players put in, said Real coach Zinedine Zidane.Ronaldo had been left fuming after being substituted by Zidane for the final 20 minutes of Saturdays 2-2 draw at Las Palmas in La Liga. And the superstar chose to celebrate his goal at Dortmunds Signal Iduna Park with his Portugal team-mates Fabio Coentrao and Pepe, who were on the Real bench, with Zidane in the background.Dortmund dominated the opening quarter of an hour before Ronaldos opener and both goalkeepers were tested in the first five minutes.Matthias Ginter gave away a free-kick just outside the area and Ronaldos powerful shot was blocked by Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki. At the other end, Gonzalo Castros well-struck shot tested Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas, who was making his first appearance of the season after injury.Ronaldo was lucky that the referee failed to spot his clear handball from an Aubameyang free-kick shortly after, and teenage French winger Ousmane Dembele then fired over. But Real took the lead when Ronaldo finished off a sweeping move.Luka Modric and Karim Benzema combined to get the ball out of their own half. When the ball was played into the Dortmund area, James Rodriguez fed Gareth Bale who played the ball back between his legs for Ronaldo to sweep his shot home on 17 minutes. At the other end, Aubameyang clipped the bar and was pulled up for offside on 29 minutes before a bullet header from defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos was too close to Navas. But Dortmund kept up the pressure and drew level on 43 minutes when Navas opted to punch out a Raphael Guerreiro free-kick.The ball rebounded into the net off the unfortunate Varane with Aubameyang in close proximity, although the Gabon striker was officially given the goal. The equaliser was lucky, but it was no more than Dortmund deserved.Just before the half-time whistle, Ronaldos header hit the back of the Dortmund net, but the flag went up for offside.Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel introduced Schuerrle for Germanys World Cup-winner Mario Goetze on 58 minutes in what proved to be an inspired switch.Real took the lead a second time when Varane followed in to score after a Benzema attempt had struck the post and the bar.But Dortmund were not done, and when Aubameyangs attempt at an overhead kick distracted Danilo, the ball brushed off his chest and into Schuerrles path as the Germany winger fired home the equaliser.

Football: Leicester's 'Dragon Slayer' cuts down Porto

Posted:

LEICESTER (AFP) - Leicester City striker Islam Slimani resumed his torment of Porto as the Premier League champions preserved their 100 percent Champions League record with a narrow 1-0 victory on Tuesday.Playing in their first ever Champions League home game, Claudio Ranieris Leicester prevailed thanks to Slimanis 25th-minute header to make it two wins from two in Group G.Slimani earned the nickname The Dragon Slayer for his scoring feats against Porto with former club Sporting Lisbon and he has now scored seven goals in seven career appearances against The Dragons.Eight years to the day previously at the King Power Stadium, Leicester had beaten Hartlepool United 1-0 in an English third-tier game.Eight years on, they are the champions of England and having won 3-0 at Club Brugge in their opening group fixture, their fans will already be dreaming of a place in the last 16.The European campaign is proving a welcome tonic for Leicester, whose faltering league title defence has seen them beaten three times already.Two-time European champions Porto, meanwhile, have now played 17 games on English soil without winning, losing and failing to score on their last five visits.Porto right-back Miguel Layun made an enterprising start to the game, working fit-again Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel with a curling shot and then whipping a low cross across goal. But Layuns defensive colleagues were quickly made to look uncomfortable by Leicesters muscular strike pairing of Slimani and Jamie Vardy.Brazilian centre-back Felipe was particularly discomfited, almost heading Christian Fuchss long throw into his own net and then being booked for blocking Vardys run.The crowd sensed blood and in the 25th minute the breakthrough arrived courtesy of 28 million pounds ($36.3 million, 32.3 million euros) record signing Slimani.Marc Albrighton switched play with a glorious crossfield pass, Riyad Mahrez shaped an inviting cross to the back post and Slimani outmuscled Felipe to plant a diving header past Iker Casillas. It was the Algeria internationals third goal in four appearances for Leicester and the sixth goal he had scored past Casillas in 2016 alone.Layun flicked the side-netting at the other end with a free-kick, but half-time arrived without Porto having seriously threatened.Mahrez threatened to extend Leicesters lead shortly before the hour with a zipping low drive that Casillas had to turn around his left-hand post.Nuno Espirito Santo made a double change moments later, sending on Hector Herrera and Diogo Jota for Andre Andre and Adrian Lopez, and the entrants enlivened the visitors attacking efforts. Both players tested Schmeichel shortly after entering the fray, Jota with a deflected shot and Herrera with an ambitious long-range strike that the diving Dane turned behind for a corner. There was one big scare when Schmeichel came to punch a cross and missed, but substitute Jesus Coronas volley flicked off Albrighton, struck the right-hand post and rebounded to safety.

Football: Son sparks Spurs in Moscow

Posted:

MOSCOW (AFP) - South Korean winger Son Heung-min got Tottenham Hotspurs Champions League campaign up and running with a 1-0 win at CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.Son picked up a pass from Erik Lamela after 71 minutes to score his fifth goal in five games for the north Londoners. The three points put Tottenham second, one point behind French Ligue 1 side Monaco, who drew 1-1 with Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen in the other game in Group E. Weve played much better tonight (than against Monaco) but it was a tough game as its always difficult to play here in Moscow, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said. It was very important for us to get three points here as we were in a must-win position.Back in the Champions League for the first time in five years, Tottenham dominated possession in the opening half-hour but the Russian champions defended stoutly, stifling the visitors attacking efforts.Dele Alli went close after 35 minutes but his powerful shot from just outside the area hit the woodwork with CSKA goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev already beaten.Just a minute later Dutch striker Vincent Janssen -- playing in the absence of Harry Kane -- collected the ball in the home teams area and lobbed into the net over Akinfeev, but his effort was disallowed for offside.Kieran Trippier found the unmarked Toby Alderweireld in the area five minutes before the break but the Belgian defenders header was saved. After the interval Tottenham tested the CSKA defence and in the 54th minute Son had a chance to open the scoring from outside the box but his powerful left-foot strike flew just inches past the far post.Spurs increasing pressure finally paid off as Son stunned the crowd at the packed 30,000-seat CSKA Arena in the 71st minute when he collected a Lamela pass and beat Akinfeev, who got a touch but could not stop the ball trickling over the line. Were in the race for the next round, Pochettino said. Its a very important three points. But theres four games remaining to play and everything is still open.Next up for Tottenham is a double-header with Bayer Leverkusen, who have drawn both of their matches so far. Its a pity we failed to resist Tottenhams attacks after the break, said CSKA head coach Leonid Slutsky. At the same time we failed to convert our chances. Ill say again its very annoying.

Football: Ben Yedder winner edges Sevilla past Lyon

Posted:

SEVILLE (AFP) - Sevilla took a big step towards reaching the knockout stage of the Champions League for the first time in six years as Wissam Ben Yedders header ensured a 1-0 win over Lyon on Tuesday.Ben Yedder was left with the simple task of heading into an empty net from Luciano Viettos knockdown early in the second-half, but Vietto had a night to forget in front of goal as he skied a penalty over the bar 20 minutes from time.Lyon hit the woodwork either side of half-time through Nabil Fekir and Corentin Tolisso, but were overrun in the second period as Sevilla held on for a deserved win.Victory takes Jorge Sampaolis men level with Juventus at the top of Group H on four points after the Italian champions were 4-0 victors at Dinamo Zagreb. Lyon slip to third a point further back.Sampaoli made seven changes to the side that started Saturdays 3-1 defeat at Athletic Bilbao with a host of first team regulars recalled. However, it was the visitors who threatened most early on. Fekir was forced into a more advanced role in his Champions League debut in the absence of star striker Alexandre Lacazette and was desperately unlucky when his fierce shot from outside the area came back off the bar.Sevilla have now won 15 of their last 17 European ties at home and finally worked their way into the game midway through the half when Anthony Lopes rushed from his goal to block Viettos effort when clean through on goal.Ben Yedder then had a goal ruled out for offside against Samir Nasri in the build-up.However, the Europa League holders had goalkeeper Sergio Rico to thank for being level at the break as his outstretched foot turned Maxwel Cornets low effort to safety.Sevilla were greeted by a few timid boos as they left the field at half-time, but came out transformed at the start of the second-half.Nasri had already seen a fierce effort saved by Lopes by the time Ben Yedder followed up Viettos intelligent header back across goal to nod the hosts into a 53rd minute lead.Rico came to his sides rescue again two minutes later with a brilliant save from Tolisso after an excellent through ball from Fekir.Vietto had two golden chances to put the game beyond Lyon, but failed to take either as again he couldnt get the better of Lopes in a one-on-one.And when Nasri was chopped down by Jordy Gaspar inside the area, the on-loan Atletico Madrid striker chipped the ball well over the bar from the penalty spot.Tolisso fired another warning when his long-ranger effort was tipped onto the bar by Rico.Viettos luck was out again 13 minutes from time when Jeremy Morels brilliant goal line clearance denied the Argentina after he finally beat Lopes.

Boxing: Klitschko poised for title bout against Joshua

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - After his world title rematch with Tyson Fury was again postponed, ex-champion Wladimir Klitschko is on the verge of sealing a new heavyweight bout against IBF belt-holder, Britains Anthony Joshua.Joshuas promoter Eddie Hearn and I have actually agreed things financially, Klitschko manager Bernd Boente told SID, an AFP subsidiary. It now depends a bit on the world organisations, but we would like to see the fight go ahead. The pairs broadcast partners, Britains Sky Sports (Joshua) and RTL in Germany (Klitschko), are said to be very interested in the fight, which would most likely take place in Manchester.Joshuas camp has already booked the Manchester Arena for November 26 with the British fighters International Boxing Federation (IBF) belt on the line.Last Friday, Fury pulled out of a planned bout against Klitschko for the second time.Furys camp says he is medically unfit to fight Klitschko on October 29 -- which was also due to be held in Manchester -- having pulled out of their July 9 bout with an ankle injury. The British fighter is reportedly seeking professional help.Boxings respective governing bodies could strip Fury of the WBA and WBO belts he won when he beat Hamburg-based Klitschko on points in Duesseldorf last November. From our side, when Wladimir Klitschko and Anthony Joshua could box for the WBA and IBF belts on November 26, we would like to take the fight, said Joshuas promoter Eddie Hearn. The 26-year-old Joshua, the super heavyweight champion at the 2012 London Olympic Games, has won all 17 of his fights by knock-out since turning pro in July 2013.The British fighter was a sparring partner for Klitschko two years ago.The 40-year-old Ukrainian has won 64 of his 68 fights and his defeat to Fury was his first for a decade.

Elon Musk unveils plan for Mars 'city'

Posted:

GUADALAJARA (AFP) - SpaceX chief Elon Musk unveiled on Tuesday ambitious plans to establish a city on Mars by sending humans on massive spacecraft with cabins, at a cost as low as $100,000 per person.Taking the stage under a large globe of Mars at the International Astronautical Congress, Musk showed his vision for a giant rocket that would propel men and women to the Red Planet in our lifetime. We need to go from these early exploration missions to actually building a city, he said to an overflow crowd at an expo center with a few thousand seats in the western Mexican city of Guadalajara.Musk showed a futuristic video depicting his concept of an interplanetary transport system based on re-usable rockets, a propellant farm on Mars and 1,000 spaceships on orbit, carrying about 100 people each. The spacecraft would have a restaurant, cabins, zero-gravity games and movies. It has to be fun or exciting. It cant feel cramped or boring, he said. The first flight would be expensive but the aim is making this affordable to almost anyone who wants to go, by dropping the price of a ticket over time to $100,000, Musk said.Millions of tons of cargo would also need to blast off aboard a powerful rocket, which he described as a scaled-up version of the Falcon 9 booster, the companys current rocket system that can land vertically. The South Africa-born Canadian-American entrepreneur said the plan would require a huge public-private partnership to establish a self-sustaining human civilization on Mars.SpaceX has said it plans to send an unmanned Dragon cargo capsule to Mars as early as 2018, paving the way for a human mission that would leave Earth in 2024 and arrive on the Red Planet the following year. The rocket would take a spaceship into orbit, release it and land back on Earth to pick up a fuel tanker, which it would immediately take back up to the craft to fuel its journey to Mars, Musk said.Once on Mars, humans would have to install a plant to produce propellant by using the planets methane resources to fuel the spacecraft for its return to Earth.Experts warn reaching Mars -- 225 million kilometers (140 million miles) from Earth on average -- and living there requires major engineering feats and a massive budget.Prior to Musks presentation, John Logsdon, former director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University, said it was unlikely that Musk would meet the 2025 timeline, noting he has been overly optimistic about rocket schedules in the past.Bottom line is the cost. Youre talking of tens of billions of dollars and SpaceX doesnt have that type of money, he said. But retired astronaut Leroy Chiao said Musk has amassed technical and operational experts, and SpaceX is generating revenue from satellite launches.Elon Musk sets aggressive goals, and while he doesnt always make the exact date, he is usually able to make those goals. I would say that it is possible, but aggressive, Chiao told AFP.The US space agency NASA, which is also studying the effects of long-term space flight on the human body, has announced its own plans to send people to Mars by the 2030s.SpaceX is not the only private venture dreaming about sending people to Mars.Blue Origin, founded by Amazon chief Jeff Bezos, unveiled plans earlier this month to build a massive rocket called New Glenn to launch people to space, but the companys president says going to the Red Planet could take decades. We want to have millions of people living and working in space in a decades timeframe if they want to, Blue Origin president Rob Meyerson told AFP.The company, which has built another rocket that has performed vertical landings, is currently focusing on finding a way to get people to lower orbit routinely and affordably, he said. Blue Origin is in competition with British billionaire Richard Bransons Virgin Galactic in the race to send tourists to space. But asked in Guadalajara whether Mars was an objective, Virgin Galactic chief executive George Whitesides said: Richard and my view is that we are going to be pretty focused on planet Earth in the immediate future. While Virgin Galactic unveiled a new winged spacecraft earlier this month, SpaceX and Blue Origin have focused efforts on rockets that can land vertically, a key breakthrough that could cut costs for space travel by making rockets reusable.SpaceX has designed the powerful Falcon Heavy rocket, which could send a manned Dragon spacecraft into space. The company plans to launch the 70-meter (230-foot) tall rocket, which has a liftoff thrust equivalent to 18 Boeing 747 aircraft at full power, later this year.SpaceX was hit by a setback on September 1 when another rocket, the Falcon 9, exploded on the launch pad during a test in Florida.

Egypt recovers sunken migrant boat and 33 more bodies

Posted:

CAIRO (AFP) - Egypt raised the wreck of a migrant boat Tuesday and recovered at least 33 bodies, taking to 202 the death toll from last weeks sinking off the countrys Mediterranean coast.Survivors said up to 450 migrants had been crowded aboard the fishing trawler when it keeled over off the port city of Rosetta on September 14, including an estimated 100 in its hold. The Egyptian military said 163 people had been rescued, meaning the boat would have had at least 365 people on board when it went down en route to Italy, according to official figures. On Tuesday divers and a salvage vessel belonging to a petroleum company pulled the trawler to the surface some 12 kilometres (eight miles) offshore. The boat is being dragged to shore after bodies trapped in the hold were recovered, Wahdan al-Sayed, spokesman for Beheira province in northern Egypt, told AFP.Sixteen of the 33 bodies retrieved on Tuesday had been handed over to their relatives, while the rest were still being identified, said the health ministry. On Monday, police detained the owner of the vessel.A judicial source said he could face charges of human trafficking and involuntary manslaughter. The United Nations refugee agency said Friday that most of those rescued were Egyptians but they also included migrants from Sudan, Eritrea, Syria and Ethiopians.Since 2014, there has been a steady increase in the number of interceptions of refugees and migrants trying to leave Egypt in an irregular manner, said the UNHCR.Many refugees and migrants may be using Egypt as a transit country, it said, adding 2016 was expected to be the deadliest year on record for Mediterranean crossings by migrants. The International Organization for Migration said on Tuesday that 3,501 migrants and refugees have died or gone missing trying to cross the Mediterranean so far this year. The figure is almost six times that for the same period in 2015.At this rate, 2016 will be the deadliest year on record in the Mediterranean Sea, the UN refugee agency said late last week.Increasing mixed migration flows through Egypt are of major concern to UNHCR. The loss of life faced by refugees and migrants on Mediterranean smuggling routes has increased, said the UNHCR.It added that a significant number of unaccompanied minors have been recorded on the Egypt-Italy route.Overall, 302,149 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea this year as of 25 September, with most of them arriving in Greece and Italy, said the IOM.More than 10,000 people have died attempting to cross the Mediterranean to Europe since 2014, according to the United Nations.Egyptian authorities have so far this year foiled 110 attempts to smuggle migrants to Europe, said Interior Minister Magdy Abdel Ghaffar.More than 4,600 non-Egyptians, many of them Sudanese and Ethiopians, have been arrested this year trying to depart from Egypts northern coast, the UNHCR said.
