Scotland start 2018 World Cup qualifiers campaign in perfect fashion

Posted:

TA QALI, Malta (AFP) - Robert Snodgrass bagged a hat-trick as Scotland started World Cup 2018 qualifying in perfect fashion with a 5-1 win in Malta.Substitute Steven Fletcher and Chris Martin also got their names on the scoresheet as Alfred Effiong netted nine-man Maltas consolation. It put Gordon Strachans team top of Group F ahead of England, who won 1-0 in Slovakia thanks to an Adam Lallana winner deep into stoppage time.Although only one match has been played, it is a welcome boost for Scotland, who were the only one of the Home Nations to miss out on Euro 2016.Snodgrass scored his first on 10 minutes with a miscued cross before Effiong equalised just three minutes later from a header. It was a frustrating first period for the Scots against stubborn opponents, but the second half was a different matter.Martin converted a low cross from Matt Ritchie on 53 minutes, after which the floodgates opened.Snodgrass got his second just past the hour mark from the penalty spot after he was tripped in the box by Jonathan Caruanu, who was subsequently dismissed.Striker Fletcher came off the bench to convert a deflected Ritchie cross before winger Snodgrass completed the scoring after Fletcher was denied by the bar.Malta finished with nine men as Luke Gambin was sent off late on for lashing out at Snodgrass.

UK casts doubts on points-based immigration after Brexit

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - British Prime Minister Theresa May has committed to cracking down on immigration from the European Union, while casting doubts on introducing a points-based system, according to her comments released on Sunday.Mays plans for immigration policy in the wake of Britains decision to leave the EU remained a key discussion point as she travelled to the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou to attend the G20 summit. They (voters) wanted to see an ability to be able to control the movement of people from the European Union. And obviously thats what I say, not free movement as it has been in the past, she told journalists on Saturday. The June 23 referendum saw Britain vote by 52 percent to leave the EU, following a campaign which was dominated by immigration.May was appointed after her predecessor David Cameron resigned following the vote and -- although she campaigned to remain in the EU -- she has promised to forge ahead with Brexit.Since the result, the new government has grappled with how Britain could restrict migration from the remaining 27 EU nations, and thus violate a core EU principle, without losing access to the blocs single market.Foreign Minister Boris Johnson -- one of the leaders of the Brexit campaign -- has said such a combination can be achieved with a points-based immigration system similar to the Australian model. But May cast doubt on such an approach, while recalling her expertise as Britains former interior minister. One of the issues is whether or not points-based systems do work but what Im saying is, the British people... didnt want the free movement to continue as it has in the past. We will be going out there to deliver on that, she said.During the discussion en-route to China, May said she did not want to give away any sort of part of our negotiating hand ahead of formal talks with the EU.She said there was no single silver bullet which could provide an answer to dealing with immigration. You have to look across the board, you have to look at the whole range of issues. And obviously dealing with people if theyre discovered here illegally, the prime minister said.May reiterated that there would be no change in the status of EU citizens currently living in the UK before Britain leaves the bloc, which would follow two years of negotiations sparked by the government triggering the Article 50 mechanism.I expect to be able to guarantee their status. The only circumstances in which that wouldnt be possible, is if other EU countries dont guarantee the status of British citizens who are living in other EU countries, she said. The prime minister has repeatedly expressed her intentions to be ambitious in EU negotiations, adopting an upbeat tone echoed by Brexit minister David Davis. This is an historic and positive moment for our nation. Brexit isnt about making the best of a bad job. It is about seizing the huge and exciting opportunities that will flow from a new place for Britain in the world. There will be new freedoms, new opportunities, new horizons for this great country, he said in a statement.Davis is expected to make a statement in parliament on Monday, the details of which have not been published.

Exciting England encourage captain Eoin Morgan

Posted:

CARDIFF, United Kingdom (AFP) - England limited overs captain Eoin Morgan said he was excited by his teams progress in 50-over cricket despite a season-ending four-wicket loss to Pakistan in Cardiff on Sunday. That defeat meant England had to be content with a 4-1 one-day international series win rather than a first home 5-0 whitewash. It also denied Morgans men, who back in June tied an ODI with Sri Lanka in Nottingham before winning that series, a maiden unbeaten season in white-ball cricket ahead of Wednesdays lone Twenty20 against Pakistan in Manchester.England may still be fifth in the International Cricket Council ODI rankings but they have made significant progress since their embarrassing first-round exit at last years World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. And with England staging both the 2017 Champions Trophy and the 2019 World Cup, it is no longer fanciful to think they could win their first major international 50-over trophy within the next few years.Weve been outstanding, said Morgan. Every game throughout the series, weve come out with a hunger and determination to perform at our best.England fell short of what they wanted in making 302 for nine in Cardiff, with opener Jason Roy top-scoring with 87 and all-rounder Ben Stokes contributing an ODI-best 75.But they were on course for a whitewash when Pakistan lost two wickets in one Mark Wood over to be 77 for three. However, a record fourth-wicket partnership of 163 between wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed (90) and Shoaib Malik (77) turned the match Pakistans way.Morgan, though, remained heartened by Englands commitment to an aggressive approach in ODI cricket since their World Cup debacle.I think its exciting, he said. The attitude and hunger to want to be better playing in that manner, I think, sums up the direction one-day international cricket is going and the talent we have. But with world number one-ranked Australia also completing a 4-1 series victory away to Sri Lanka on Sunday, Morgan denied England -- beaten on home soil in the 2013 final by India at Edgbaston -- were favourites for next years Champions Trophy.Australia are playing some really strong cricket... South Africa, India as well, said the Irishman.I know the last Champions Trophy we played (here), the pitches were a bit drier than we thought, and brought in sub-continent teams.I dont think, this far out, you can label anybody as favourites.Man-of-the-match Ahmed, who also scored Pakistans first ODI hundred at Lords in the second match, was the leading overall run-scorer in the series with exactly 300 at an average of 60.The way Sarfraz batted, this whole tour hes been exceptional, said Pakistan one-day captain Azhar Ali following a much-needed win.Hes been positive and scoring good runs at number five, so weve got some good performances but we just need to bind it together.Nevertheless, Pakistan remain ninth in the ODI rankings, with the 1992 champions in danger of missing out on automatic qualification for the 2019 World Cup.Azhar has often been compared unfavourably to celebrated Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who has led Pakistan to the top of the ICC standings in the five-day game. But Azhar responded to suggestions he might resign the captaincy by indicating he intended to carry on as skipper.I got a few 80s (against England) so that will really help my confidence. Leading by example is very important. I will try and keep that form in the coming series. That will help the team.He added: Its a very happy camp right now -- because it has been a very tough tour for us in ODIs, and getting a victory at the end and finishing on a high is really good.A few guys we have seen on this tour have really stepped up -- they are young guys, and if they can play good consistent cricket we are looking at a bright future.

Lynn, Finch to miss Sri Lanka T20 series

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Batsman Chris Lynn will return home and miss Australias two Twenty20 internationals against Sri Lanka after suffering a shoulder injury in training, Cricket Australia said Monday.Lynn missed Sundays five-wicket win in the fifth one-day international against the Sri Lankans in Pallekele after dislocating his shoulder during a fielding drill in the warm-up.Consequently he will be unavailable for the remaining matches and instead will return to Brisbane to undergo further investigation to determine the full extent of the injury, team physiotherapist David Beakley said in a statement.Opener Aaron Finch also injured a finger while fielding during the final ODI and will miss the two remaining T20 games, but will stay with the squad to assist with 12th man duties.Aaron was hit on the right index finger when fielding a ball and x-rays have shown a fracture which means he will not be available for the remaining two T20 International matches, said Beakley.Selectors confirmed Matthew Wade will stay on in Sri Lanka to replace Lynn for the two matches and George Bailey will remain for the first T20 international before heading home. The T20 series starts on Tuesday in Kandy.

Tennis: Pouille stuns Nadal to reach US Open quarter-finals

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Lucas Pouille outlasted 14-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal in a five-set classic on Sunday to lead a trio of French men into the quarter-finals of the US Open.Pouille, 22 and ranked 25th in the world, lived up to the promise of his quarter-final run at Wimbledon, emerging from a roller-coaster ride with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (8/6) triumph over the Spanish superstar. The defeat leaves Nadal -- forced out of the French Open third round with a wrist injury that also saw him miss Wimbledon -- without at least one Grand Slam quarter-final appearance for the first time since he was a teenaged tour newcomer in 2004.Pouille came out firing, pushing Nadal back with an array of deep groundstrokes and angled shots.Fifty-two winners from Nadal -- whose attacking response saw him come out a winner on 35 of 48 forays to the net -- werent enough. The taut battle came down to the fifth-set tiebreaker and Nadal, trailing 3-6, showed his mettle by saving three match points -- the third on Pouilles serve. Then he smacked a forehand into the net to give Pouille one more chance and the French player pounced on it with a blazing forehand that kissed the sideline. It was a very close match, anything could have happened, said Nadal, who opened the fifth set with a break but couldnt hold onto it, dropping his own serve in the eighth to make it 4-4 and set the stage for the tiebreaker.I fought until the end, Nadal said. Theres things I could do better, but I had the right attitude. I needed something more -- it was not there today. The four-hour, seven-minute contest entranced the crowd in Arthur Ashe stadium, where Pouille recalled admiring Nadal as a youngster. When I was younger I used to watch all his matches on (Ashe) and now its me, said Pouille, who has won three successive five-setters to reach the last eight. He next tackles 10th-seeded compatriot Gael Monfils, a 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 winner over Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis.Ninth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also advanced, downing Jack Sock, the last American man left in the draw, 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (7/9), 6-2.Its the first time since 1947 that three French men have reached the quarter-finals of one Grand Slam. The 23-year-old Sock, seeded 26th, hadnt faced a break point in surprising 2014 champion Marin Cilic in the third round.Against Tsonga he mustered only five aces and was broken six times by the 2008 Australian Open runner-up, who has reached at least the semi-finals of every Grand Slam except this one.Tsonga next faces either world number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic or Kyle Edmund, a 21-year-old Briton who is in the last 16 of a Grand Slam for the first time in his first appearance in the US Open draw.Djokovic, 9-0 in US Open fourth-round appearances, struggled through a first-round victory over Jerzy Janowicz but hasnt broken a sweat since. He was given a walkover in the second round by injured Czech Jiri Vesely and played just six games before third round opponent Mikhail Youzhny retired hurt. The extra rest may prove providential for Djokovic, who has battled a left wrist injury and received treatment on his right arm during his win over Janowicz. The remaining round of 16 matches were scheduled for Monday, when world number two Andy Murray will take on Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. Third-seeded Stan Wawrinka, sixth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan, eighth-seeded Austrian Dominic Thiem and former champion Juan Martin del Potro will also battle for quarter-final berths.

US says no deal on Syria, blames Russian backtracking

Posted:

HANGZHOU (AFP) - The US said Sunday it had not yet struck a hoped-for deal with Russia on stemming the violence in Syrias brutal civil war, blaming Moscow for backtracking on issues it thought were settled.President Barack Obama said earlier that the two sides were working around the clock on the sidelines of a summit in China, but that it was a very complicated piece of business. The State Department said a deal was close and could be announced by Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, but hours later admitted defeat for now.Russians walked back on some of the areas we thought we were agreed on, so we are going back to capitals to consult, a senior State Department official said. Kerry and Lavrov will meet again on Monday in Hangzhou, where G20 leaders are gathered, he added.Moscow and Washington support opposite sides in the Syrian conflict, which erupted in March 2011 after President Bashar al-Assad unleashed a brutal crackdown against a pro-democracy revolt. Successive rounds of international negotiations have failed to end a five-year conflict that has left more than 290,000 people dead and forced millions to flee, a key contributor to migrant flows into Europe.Russia is one of Assads most important international backers while the US supports Syrias main opposition alliance and some rebels, with other countries and forces also involved.Trying to corral all of those different forces into a coherent structure for negotiations is difficult, Obama said Sunday. But our conversations with the Russians are key.The US and Russia co-chair a UN-backed humanitarian taskforce for Syria, which has been struggling to ensure access for desperately needed aid across the country. The battered second city Aleppo, which is divided between government and opposition control but surrounded by loyalist forces, has emerged as a major concern with urgent calls for a ceasefire to alleviate a humanitarian catastrophe. The talks in Hangzhou are the latest round of diplomacy on Syria, after marathon negotiations between Kerry and Lavrov in Geneva last week failed to yield a final deal.Kerry then listed two main priorities to ensure any new ceasefire holds: responding to violations by the Damascus regime and checking the rising influence of the former al-Nusra Front. That group has renamed itself Fateh al-Sham Front after renouncing its status as al-Qaedas Syrian affiliate, but Kerry stressed that Nusra is al-Qaeda, and no name change by Nusra hides what Nusra really is and what it tries to do.Earlier truces have rapidly deteriorated, and Obama warned Sunday that the US was approaching the talks with some scepticism. But it is worth trying, he said. To the extent that there are children and women and innocent civilians who can get food and medical supplies and get some relief from the constant terror of bombings, thats worth the effort.

IS ousted from Turkey border as Syria army besieges Aleppo

Posted:

ANKARA (AFP) - Islamic State jihadists were expelled from their last positions along the Turkish-Syrian border, Turkey said Sunday, as Syrian forces again laid seige to rebel strongholds in war-torn Aleppo. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said his nations forces and Syrian rebels had pushed back terrorist organisations on its southern border with Syria, depriving IS of a key transit point for recruits and supplies. From Azaz to Jarabulus, our 91 km border has been completely secured, Yildirim said during a televised speech while visiting the southeastern city of Diyarbakir. The news comes as Syrian government troops renewed the siege of rebel-held parts of Aleppo on Sunday as Washington and Moscow failed to reach a deal on stemming violence in the countrys devastating war.The more than five-year conflict has become increasingly complex, involving not only regime and rebels, but international backers on both sides, Kurdish forces, jihadists and now Turkey. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said earlier rebels and Islamist factions backed by Turkish tanks and warplanes had taken several villages on the Turkish-Syrian border after IS withdrew from them, ending ISs presence... on the border.Ankara began an operation inside Syria on August 24, using tanks and war planes to back opposition fighters with special forces also providing support.Turkeys success is likely to deliver a blow to the Syrian Kurdish YPG, which has been gaining territory in Syrias north after working with the US-led coalition against the jihadist force. But Ankara considers the YPG a terrorist group and has been alarmed by its expansion along the border, fearing the creation of a contiguous, semi-autonomous Kurdish region in northern Syria. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said Turkey would not allow a terror corridor on its southern border. With Turkeys rapid success in less than two weeks, his position looks stronger with territory in between the two Kurdish cantons of Afrin and Kobane now in the hands of Ankara-backed rebels. The loss of the Turkish border will also deprive IS of a key transit point for recruits and supplies, though the group continues to hold territory in both Syria and Iraq.Despite several rounds of international negotiations, a solution to the civil war that has killed more than 290,000 people and displaced millions remains elusive.Syrian state media said the army and allied forces had taken an area south of Aleppo, severing the sole route left into the eastern neighbourhoods held by the opposition. The armed forces in cooperation with their allies took full control of the military academy zone south of Aleppo and are clearing the remaining terrorists from the area, state television said, citing a military source. It said the advance cut all the supply and movement routes for terrorist groups from southern Aleppo province to the eastern neighbourhoods and Ramussa. The development leaves about 250,000 people living in rebel-controlled parts of the city cut off from the outside world once again, and will raise new fears about a humanitarian crisis in Aleppo.Once Syrias economic powerhouse, the city has been ravaged by the war that began with anti-government protests in March 2011.It has been roughly divided between government control in the west and rebel control in the east since mid-2012, but in recent months regime forces slowly began to encircle the east.In July, they severed the only road into the rebel neighbourhoods, the key Castello Road running from the Turkish border in the north, creating food and fuel shortages in the east. The siege prompted international concern, with aid agencies urging 48-hour ceasefires to ensure humanitarian access. In early August, rebel forces including Al-Qaedas former Syrian affiliate battled regime forces south of the city to open a new route to the east, through Ramussa district. But in recent days regime forces backed by Syrian and Russian war planes launched a counter-offensive.A key regime ally, Moscow began an aerial campaign in support of President Bashar al-Assads government last September, even as it continued to publicly support efforts for a negotiated solution to the five-year war.Earlier Sunday, hopes were raised that Moscow and Washington might be on the verge of announcing a deal to halt the bloodshed.US President Barack Obama said both nations were working around the clock on a ceasefire, and a State Department official said a deal was close. But the hopes evaporated later in the day, with a State Department official saying Russia had walked back on some of the areas we thought we were agreed on.Instead, US Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov are set to meet again on Monday in Hangzhou, China, where G20 leaders are gathered. Were going to review some ideas tonight, a couple things on these couple of tough issues, and come back together and see where we are, said Kerry. Were not going to rush, he said, stressing the importance of reaching a deal that was able to try to get the job done.

Libya forces facing 'fierce' IS resistance in Sirte

Posted:

MISRATA (AFP) - Libyan pro-government forces are facing fierce resistance from Islamic State group holdouts in Sirte and it could take several days to gain full control of the city, a spokesman said Sunday.Forces loyal to Libyas Government of National Accord (GNA) launched a new attack on Saturday against IS in Sirte, the coastal city seized by the jihadists last year.Backed by weeks of US air strikes, pro-GNA fighters have recaptured nearly all of what had been the jihadists main stronghold in North Africa.IS fighters are now cornered in a last district of the city but Reda Issa, a spokesman for loyalist forces, said it was proving difficult to dislodge them.IS is putting up fierce resistance in their last neighbourhoods, Issa told AFP. They are trying to make the battle last longer although they know it will be over soon.At least 10 pro-GNA fighters were killed and 60 wounded in Saturdays offensive, with most of the deaths caused by car bombs and suicide attacks, Issa said.Fighting had eased on Sunday, he said, as pro-government forces sought ways to minimise the casualties caused by IS suicide attacks the next time there will be an offensive. We hope to liberate Sirte before Eid, Issa said, referring to the Eid al-Adha Muslim holiday, which is due around September 12.The forces loyal to the UN-backed GNA had said they were preparing to liberate the entire city after seizing several IS positions, including its headquarters, last month. The citys fall would be a huge setback to ISs efforts to expand its self-proclaimed caliphate beyond Syria and Iraq where the jihadists have also suffered losses. The capture of Sirte by IS sparked fears the jihadists would use the city as a springboard for attacks on Europe.
