Real Madrid win against Osasuna to go back on top

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid maintained a one point lead over Barcelona at the top of La Liga as Cristiano Ronaldo was on target in a hard fought 3-1 win at rock bottom Osasuna on Saturday.Earlier, Barcas front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar all struck in a 6-0 thrashing of Alaves. But Madrid also have two games in hand on their title rivals. However, both games were overshadowed by horrible injuries as Barcas Aleix Vidal suffered a dislocated right ankle that will keep him out for five months and Osasunas Tano Bonnin a double leg fracture. There is no such a difference (between the sides). It is true it was the leader against last in the table, but you have to play the games and the opponents always make it difficult against Madrid, said Real boss Zinedine Zidane. We have to suffer, but in the end we got what we came for.The game at El Sadar was only 15 minutes old when Bonnin came off worse in an innocuous looking challenge with Isco to the visible shock of players on both sides.Osasuna had started on the front foot, but suffered a further blow nine minutes later when Karim Benzemas through ball found Ronaldo and the World Player of the Years drive from a narrow angle had too much power for Salvatore Sirigu. The hosts responded in style just after the half hour mark when Sergio Leon broke into an ocean of space behind the Madrid defence before producing a cool chip over Keylor Navas to level.Navas then made brilliant saves from Emmanuel Riviere and Leon either side of half-time to keep Madrid on level terms. And eventually their extra quality shone through when Isco latched onto a loose ball inside the area and slotted into the far corner just after the hour mark.Madrid should have gone onto win by a more comfortable margin as Sirigu made a fine save from Ronaldo before the Portuguese and Lucas Vazquez had strong claims for a penalty waived away. However, Vazquez made the points safe with a measured dink over Sirigu in the final minute of stoppage time.

Tennis: Bacsinszky beats wasp sting as Fed Cup hots up

Switzerlands Timea Bacsinszky overcame being stung by a wasp to beat French rival Alize Cornet in the Fed Cup as three of the four World Group ties ended all-square on Saturday. The Swiss were 1-1 against France in Geneva while defending champions, the Czech Republic, also split the opening rubbers with Spain in Ostrava as did top-flight debutants Belarus against the Netherlands in Minsk.Bacsinszky downed Cornet 7-5, 6-4 but only after needing treatment when she was stung on her arm by a wasp at 3-3 in the first set of the clash at Genevas Palexpo arena. The Swiss number one immediately dunked her left elbow in a courtside bucket of water before leaving the court for further treatment on the sting. When she returned, she broke Cornets serve before going on to secure eventual victory on a fourth match point.Who would have thought that we would have wasps in Switzerland in February, said Bacsinszky, the world No 16.It hurt a lot but maybe it will give me super powers on Sunday. She added: The last time I got stung was a long time ago, and I ended up in hospital, so I had a little panic today.France, the runners-up to the Czechs last season, eventually levelled the quarterfinal when 23rd-ranked Kristina Mladenovic eased past her best friend Belinda Bencic 6-3, 6-4.The reverse singles and doubles take place on Sunday with the eventual winners to face either Belarus or the Dutch for a place in the final. The Czechs were tied 1-1 with Spain after number-one players Karolina Pliskova and Garbine Muguruza won their opening rubbers.World No 7 Muguruza, the French Open champion, beat 17th-ranked Barbora Strycova 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 before third-ranked Pliskova levelled the tie after seeing off world number 70 Lara Arruabarrena 6-4, 7-5. The Czechs are seeking their fourth straight Fed Cup title after winning five of the last six editions of the team competition. Spain last won the trophy in 1998.The home side are without 12th-ranked two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova who is recovering from a hand injury she suffered when fighting a knife-wielding burglar last December. The winners of the tie will face either 17-time champions United States or Germany who are playing in Hawaii. The US are missing Serena and Venus Williams as well as the injured Madison Keys while Germany are without Angelique Kerber.Kiki Bertens rallied from a set down to beat Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, drawing the Dutch level at 1-1 in Minsk.World No 24 Bertens won 3-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-4 in her first ever meeting with the 18-year-old Belarusian.Earlier, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, ranked 128th, put Belarus into the lead as she battled back from a set down to beat Michaella Krajicek 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Last-gasp Robben, Vidal put Bayern seven clear

Posted:

Berlin (AFP) – Arturo Vidal and Arjen Robben netted last minute goals in Bayern Munich’s 2-0 win at Ingolstadt on Saturday to open a seven-point lead as their main Bundesliga rivals all lost.Bayern, who host Arsenal on Wednesday in the Champions League last 16 first leg, broke the deadlock when Vidal ghosted in behind the Ingolstadt defence and put his side ahead on 90 minutes.Robben netted just 60 seconds later to seal victory in the Bavaria derby. It was a deserved win for Bayern after Robert Lewandowski hit the crossbar late on and had a first-half effort cleared off the line.Bayern’s cause was helped as main rivals RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund all lost.Second-placed Leipzig were beaten for the second week in a row in crashing 3-0 at home to Hamburg, who escaped the bottom three.RB were two goals down after 24 minutes in a nightmare first-half as they conceded two headers from almost identical situations.Centre-back Kyriakos Papadopoulos leapt highest to put them Hamburg ahead on 18 minutes. The second goal followed six minutes later, again from a Nicolai Mueller corner, when Brazil midfielder Walace was unmarked in the middle.Leipzig coach Ralph Hasenhuettl responded by substituting overwhelmed centre-back Dayot Upamecano, who made his starting debut, for forward Yussuf Poulsen after half an hour. But Poulsen lasted barely ten minutes before going off injured to be replaced by Davie Selke just before the break.Hamburg grabbed a late third when replacement Aaron Hunt scored with his first touch.Third-placed Frankfurt lost 3-0 at Bayer Leverkusen as Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez scored two superb goals to take the pressure off coach Roger Schmidt following back-to-back defeats.Chicharito volleyed home a cross on five minutes, then doubled the tally on 63 minutes.Kevin Kampel’s long pass was volleyed on the wing by Karim Bellarabi and Chicharito slammed home the cross with his first touch on 63 minutes before Kevin Volland netted Leverkusen’s third.Fourth-placed Dortmund crashed 2-1 at Darmstadt, who remain bottom and seven points from safety.Thomas Tuchel named three teenagers in Dortmund’s starting line-up before Tuesday’s Champions League last 16, first-leg, match at Benfica.Dzenis Burnic made his debut in defence, the second 18-year-old in the starting line-up alongside US international midfielder Christian Pulisic, while attacking midfielder Emre Mor is only 19.It backfired as Darmstadt went ahead on 21 minutes when US international striker Terrence Boyd, on loan from Leipzig, was unmarked.Dortmund’s Germany winger Marco Reus hit the crossbar from a free-kick on 32 minutes before midfielder Raphael Guerreiro levelled with a bullet shot just before the half-time break. But Darmstadt sealed the win when Antonio-Mirko Colak got in behind the defence and slotted his shot Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki’s legs.Borussia Moechengladbach climbed to ninth as Thorgan Hazard, brother of Chelsea star Eden, scored in their 1-0 win at Werder Bremen, who drop into the bottom three.

Barcelonas MSN smash Alaves for six

Posted:

Madrid (AFP) – Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar were all on target as Barcelona went top of La Liga for the first time since October with a 6-0 thrashing of Alaves on Saturday. In a dress rehearsal of the Copa del Rey final, Alaves paid for their semi-final exertions against Celta Vigo in midweek as Barca moved two points ahead of Real Madrid. However, Madrid have three games in hand, starting with a visit to Osasuna later on Saturday.Barca’s success was overshadowed, though, by violent clashes between fans outside the ground before kick-off which left one supporter in hospital with serious head injuries. Both sides later released statements condemning the violence. And in another blow to the Catalans, Aleix Vidal was stretchered off with a horrible looking ankle injury just three minutes from time.“I go away with very good feelings from the football perspective, for the result and the way we achieved it,” said Barca boss Luis Enrique.“But I am upset by Aleix’s injury, the way it came about and what it means for him.”Vidal had only recently established himself back in the team after being sidelined by Enrique for the majority of the season.“It is something serious, but we have to wait until the doctors see it and can say,” added Enrique. On the field, Enrique rotated his squad once more with six changes from Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid that secured their place in a fourth consecutive Cup final. However, despite a trip to Paris Saint-Germain upcoming on Tuesday, Messi, Suarez and Neymar were all included and ran riot. The visitors had goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to thank for not going behind early on with a brilliant one-on-one save from Theo Hernandez. There was no doubt over the outcome once Barca went in front thanks to a fine team move finished off by Suarez from close range eight minutes before half-time.A goalkeeping error from Fernando Pachecho allowed Barca to double their lead three minutes later as he punched a loose ball off Suarez’s head and the ball rebounded for Neymar to tap into an empty net.The champions hit top form after the break with four further goals in eight minutes.Messi drilled his 34th goal of the season low past Pacheco just before the hour mark. The Argentine was then played in by Suarez, but the last touch came off Alaves defender Alexis to make it 4-0.Ivan Rakitic blasted home the fifth from Suarez’s cut-back before the Uruguayan rounded off the rout himself after Pacheco had parried Neymar’s initial effort.Yet, Barca’s fine day was spoiled late on when Vidal’s right ankle gave way under an innocuous looking challenge from Hernandez.

Sanchez hands Arsenal lift with win over Hull

Posted:

London (AFP) – Alexis Sanchez struck twice as Arsenal returned to winning ways with a contentious and hard-fought 2-0 Premier League win over Hull City on Saturday. The Gunners had lost their last two games coming into this contest against the relegation-threatened Tigers and had drifted out of the title race as a result. They were by no means back to their best, but with a Champions League tie at Bayern Munich to come on Wednesday, manager Arsene Wenger will be pleased to have chalked up a timely victory.Sanchez opened the scoring on 34 minutes with a goal that was allowed to stand despite the ball going in off his right hand.He confirmed the three points with an injury-time penalty — his 17th goal of the campaign — after Sam Clucas had been sent off for clearing Lucas Perez’s strike off the line with his arm.Hull threatened on occasion, but failed to get a positive result to lift them out of the bottom three, while Arsenal stay in the top four and provisionally close to within nine points of leaders Chelsea. Some Arsenal fans decided to stay away in protest at what they deem as another failing Arsenal title bid.But one man taking his seat in the stands at the Emirates Stadium was the under-fire Wenger, who served the last game of his four-match touchline ban.His side seemed nervy at the back in the opening exchanges and Liverpool loanee Lazar Markovic broke into their box all too easily, but Oumar Niasse was unable to make contact with the Serbian’s cross.Niasse tested Petr Cech moments later as he got onto the end of Kamil Grosicki’s smart cross to head towards goal, forcing the Arsenal goalkeeper to tip his effort behind. The hosts then passed up two glorious opportunities to take the lead, with Hector Bellerin lashing wide when well-placed and Sanchez pulling his own effort wide of the mark from the centre of goal.– Walcott flare-up –Hull’s defences were finally breached 10 minutes before the break and even then, the goal came in controversial circumstances. After Kieran Gibbs’s shot was scrambled off the line by Andy Robertson, Sanchez followed in with a shot that struck Hull goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic before rebounding into the net off the Chilean’s hand.Despite protestations from the Hull players, the goal was given after assistant Jake Collin appeared to have a discussion with referee Mark Clattenburg over the incident.Arsenal survived an injury scare to Francis Coquelin early in the second half before Cech once again saved from Niasse.Theo Walcott was then cautioned for squaring up to Harry McGuire, with England colleague Gibbs lucky to only see yellow moments later for barging over Markovic as he ran through on goal.Alex Iwobi shot over after a neat exchange of passes with Ozil before Walcott fluffed his lines as he searched for his 100th goal in Arsenal colours.Niasse sent a header into the side-netting as Hull looked to ruin another weekend for Arsenal, who had Sanchez booked for simulation late on.Wenger looked to his bench in an attempt to build on his side’s slender lead, with both Danny Welbeck and Lucas coming on with 10 minutes remaining.Hull manager Marco Silva, who has now faced Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal since arriving at the KCOM Stadium, saw his own substitute Adama Diomande head a corner over. The game was sewn up in injury time after Perez saw his header blocked on the line by Clucas, who was trudging down the tunnel after being dismissed by Clattenburg as Sanchez tucked away the penalty to seal the win.

Nadal coach and uncle Toni announces split from player

ROME (AFP) - Rafael Nadals coach and uncle Toni Nadal has said he will no longer accompany the tennis great on tour, complaining that he is being shut out of decision-making.From next year I will no longer follow Rafael on the circuit and I will focus exclusively on our (tennis) academy, he was quoted as saying on the Italian website tennisitaliano.it.Nadals spokesman Benito Perez told AFP the decision was unexpected. These words took us somewhat by surprise. During all these years, we have never been through a crisis, he said.Until he was 17 years old, it was me who decided everything. Then Carlos Costa arrived as manager. Then his father became closer, each having his opinions. And the truth is that every year I had less decision-making, until the day when I will decide on nothing.Spains Carlos Moya joined the Nadal coaching team at the end of last year.

Cricket: Rahim, Hasan keep Bangladesh afloat in India Test

Posted:

HYDERABAD (AFP) - Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehedi Hasan made gritty half-centuries to keep Bangladesh afloat against a dominant India on the third day of their one-off Test on Saturday.Rahim (81) put on an unbeaten 87-run stand with teenager Hasan (51) to deny the hosts a wicket in the final session at Hyderabad’s Uppal Stadium. The visitors were 322 for six at stumps, needing another 166 runs to avoid the follow-on against the world’s number one Test side.Rahim, who also shared 107 runs with Shakib alHasan (82), braved a persistent Indian bowling attack to register his 16th Test half-century.The wicketkeeper-batsman, who took 35 balls to move from 46 to 50, tackled the Indian spinners with patience on a pitch that still looked good for batting.Rahim took a nasty blow on his finger from pacer Ishant Sharma in the final over of the day, only to hit the bowler for a boundary off the very next delivery. The captain found a perfect partner in Hasan to stage a fightback after the visitors were left reeling at 235 for six in the afternoon session.Hasan, who claimed two wickets in Indian innings with his off-spin, showed great batting temperament to register his maiden Test fifty in just his fifth outing. The 19-year-old all-rounder, who made his Test debut against England in Chittagong last year, has struck 10 boundaries during his 103-ball knock so far.Rahim’s crucial fifth-wicket stand with Shakib helped Bangladesh recover against a formidable bowling attack. The left-handed Shakib played some attacking cricket during his brisk knock laced with 14 boundaries. But he soon ran out of steam, losing his wicket to India’s premier spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.Starting the day on 41 for one, the visitors made their way to 125-4 at lunch with Indian pacers compounding Bangladesh’s woes in their first-ever Test on Indian soil.Bangladesh lost overnight batsman Tamim Iqbal who was run out for 25 while going for a risky double with partner Mominul Haque (12).The hosts had put themselves in a commanding position after skipper Virat Kohli smashed 204, steering the team to a record total of 687-6 declared against Bangladesh.India have won six and drawn two matches against the minnows, who gained Test status only in 2000

Mane stuns Spurs to get Liverpool back on track

Posted:

Liverpool (AFP) – Sadio Mane announced his return to Premier League football in emphatic fashion with both goals in Liverpool’s brilliant 2-0 victory over top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. The Senegal forward provided one of several outstanding displays from a Liverpool side who had not previously won a league game in 2017, their worst start to a calendar year since 1954.Liverpool effectively wrapped up the points, and ended their miserable start to the year, with two goals in three minutes from Mane early in the game. They were the highlights of a sensational start by Liverpool, which made a mockery of the troubles that have plagued Jurgen Klopp’s side since the turn of the year. The return of Mane from duty at the Africa Cup of Nations was also key to that dramatic improvement as the forward started a home game for the first time since New Year’s Eve.Liverpool had already launched a number of lightning-fast counter-attacks when they finally took the lead after 16 minutes through exactly that tactic.Georginio Wijnaldum played a magnificent through-ball down the middle of the park and Mane easily outpaced Ben Davies before beating Hugo Lloris with a confident 12-yard strike.Anfield was electrified and the din from the goal celebrations had barely died down before the home supporters had another one to appreciate. This time England international Eric Dier was at fault, caught in possession by Mane deep inside his own half, with the forward launching another devastating counter.Mane slipped the ball square to Adam Lallana, whose first shot was parried by Lloris. The Spurs goalkeeper recovered well to keep out Roberto Firmino’s follow-up attempt, but he could do nothing as Mane showed great technique to hook a shot into the roof of the goal from eight yards.– Kane frustrated –The only wonder as Tottenham reached the half-time whistle with only two goals against them was that the London side, who had gone nine games without defeat, were not in even deeper trouble.A poor touch from Firmino spared Spurs on 13 minutes, although it still required a brave block by Toby Alderweireld to keep out Philippe Coutinho’s shot from the rebound.Mane might have completed a six-minute hat-trick after 22 minutes, but saw his shot deflected wide before his blistering shot from the resulting corner was saved magnificently by Lloris’s left hand.Tottenham responded briefly, Simon Mignolet denying Son Heung-Min with his outstretched legs and Lucas Leiva defending magnificently, on his goal-line, to put a Dele Alli header over the bar.But the first half ended with Liverpool firmly in control.Firmino charged down a Lloris clearance and might have capitalised, Coutinho rolled a tame shot at the goalkeeper and full-back Nathaniel Clyne produced a sweet shot that Lloris gathered.Tottenham looked steadier after the restart, not quite so vulnerable to Liverpool counter-attacks, and Jordan Henderson and Joel Matip both picked up early bookings for fouls as the visitors made forays into the home half.Harry Kane, totally anonymous in the first half, even hit the post from a Christian Eriksen free-kick, although the move was flagged for a clear offside.Kane’s frustrations spilled over after 66 minutes when he was cautioned by referee Anthony Taylor for a late and nasty trip on Clyne — one of five Spurs players, and eight in total, to be booked.Liverpool looked the only team liable to add to the scoreline.Matip’s header was caught by Lloris and then Lallana set Coutinho up on the edge of the area, the Brazilian’s low shot flying just wide of the goal.

Mata, Martial score against Watford to get United fifth position

Posted:

MANCHESTER: (Web Desk) – Manchester United have now extended their unbeaten run in English Premier League (EPL) to 16 games and 111 days by beating Watford on Saturday by 2 goals to nil.Juan Mata was first to score in the 32nd minute to get the hosts the all-important lead. United were relentless throughout the first half with 14 shots on goal, out of which 7 were on target and one converted. Watford could manage only one shot on target during this time. However, The Hornets did much better in the second half, holding United in the middle of the ground and moving forward as well, though occasionally. But as the visitors tried to make something out of their newfound rhythm, they were undone permanently by Anthony Martial who was moving at a lightning speed on the left hand side. Martial scored the decisive goal as Watford never looked like coming back into the game after this goal.Etienne Capoue and Mbaye Niang made some good moves towards the end of the game but none of them really threatened the hosts much, apart from one which Janmatt fired way over the crossbar.Martial was simply brilliant for the hosts today and remained a livewire throughout. He has been a subject of much debate in the media amid the rumours that the Frenchman was keen on joining PSG since he allegedly had a tough relationship going on with the United boss Jose Mourinho. However, Jose showed trust in him today and the 37 million pounds signing did prove his mattle by scoring a goal and being part of many of the moves that United created today. His speed literally made the Watford defence run amuck.Mourinho embraces Martial as the Frenchman leaves the pitch after being subbed. Martial scored the second goal against Watford to give United an unassailable 2-Nil lead.In the end, an embrace by the manager as Martial left the pitch after being subbed for Marcus Rashford put many to silence.Watford, who had beaten the Gunners last week at their home last week today looked completely out of sorts against a resurging Manchester United who now enjoy the fifth place in Premier League, though it could be temporary as Liverpool are due to play Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield and if they succeed to win the game, they may dismantle United yet again from their position. For now though, United are the fifth on the table and may enjoy the position at least for another two hours after a long time they had slipped to sixth amidst a host of drawn games at home and away.
