Football: Lucas scores a controversial late winner as PSG win

Posted:

Paris (AFP) – Lucas grabbed a controversial late winner as Paris Saint-Germain beat Lille 2-1 on Tuesday to stay three points behind Monaco after the Ligue 1 leaders secured a gritty 2-1 victory at Montpellier.Edinson Cavani netted his league-leading 23rd goal of the season to put the reigning champions ahead on 70 minutes at the Parc des Princes.A dreadful mistake from Alphonse Areola allowed Nicolas de Preville to level with four minutes left, but Lucas claimed a crucial three points for PSG in stoppage time despite being in an offside position.“We never gave up despite conceding a goal just a few minutes from the end. We kept going and were able to get the winner,” Lucas told Canal Sport. After scoring twice in the final 10 minutes of Saturday’s 3-1 defeat of Dijon, Unai Emery’s side again left it late to keep themselves within touching distance of Monaco.Areola made a sharp low save to keep out Franck Beria’s first-half header, while PSG struggled to convert their dominance into a lead as Vincent Enyeama stuck out a strong right hand to thwart Angel Di Maria on the hour. But Cavani eventually broke the deadlock when he steered a looping free-kick into the far corner via a combination of head and shoulder.Lille looked to have snatched a point when Areola lost control of a backpass under pressure from Eric Bautheac, with fellow substitute De Preville gleefully slotting home the equaliser. However, Lucas forced the ball in from close range in the second minute of added-on time after Cavani’s initial shot was charged down amid a desperate scramble in the Lille box.

Trump lashes media ahead of key travel ban hearing

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Donald Trumps administration ramped up the rhetoric on Tuesday over the threat of militant attacks, accusing US courts and the media of downplaying the danger, hours before a key hearing on the travel ban decreed by the president in the name of national security.Hosting a group of American sheriffs at the White House, Trump hammered home the rationale for his executive order closing US borders to refugees and travellers from seven Muslim-majority nations: it is common sense, he said.It is very important for the country, he said of the ban, which barred entry to all refugees for 120 days, and to travellers from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for 90 days.Trump acknowledged that the legal showdown touched off last Friday when a federal judge suspended the measure nationwide, may well end up before the Supreme Court - while voicing hope it would not come to that. The case currently rests with a federal court of appeals in San Francisco which has set a telephone hearing for 3.00pm Pacific Time. With his most emblematic measure to date facing a wall of judicial opposition - challenged in a lawsuit backed by corporate giants, rights group and 16 US states - Trump reverted to a now-familiar strategy of lashing out at the media. On Monday, he accused dishonest news outfits of deliberately downplaying the terror threat that his administration cites to justify its ban, saying they purposefully failed to report on past jihadist atrocities. The White House later distributed a list of 78 attacks it said were executed or inspired by the Islamic State group, saying most have not received the media attention they deserved. The list includes numerous atrocities that dominated global headlines for days - from the Paris attacks of Nov 13, 2015 to the Nice truck-attack of Jun 14, 2016 or the San Bernardino mass shooting in California in December 2015.I understand the total dishonesty of the media, better than anybody and I let people know it, Trump declared on Tuesday. The media has not been Trumps only target: He has also hit out at the federal judge responsible for freezing his immigration order, allowing banned travelers to start trickling back into the country. After dismissing James Robart at the weekend as a so-called judge - a slur that drew criticism from inside his own Republican camp - Trump sought to pin blame on the courts for potential future attacks on US soil.Just cannot believe a judge would put our country in such peril. If something happens blame him and court system. People pouring in. Bad he tweeted on Sunday. In a filing on Monday to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, the Justice Department called for the ban to be reinstated, arguing that the executive order is a lawful exercise of the presidents authority over the entry of aliens into the United States and the admission of refugees.More than 120 Silicon Valley giants led by Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Twitter have meanwhile joined the lawsuit against the ban, arguing that it threatens their ability to attract crucial foreign talent and investment to the United States. If the San Francisco ruling upholds the bans suspension, the high-stakes legal battle will move to the Supreme Court, which would need to weigh in by a majority of five on the eight-seat bench to overturn the appeal court ruling. That scenario is far from guaranteed with the Supreme Court currently evenly split between four conservative and four liberal justices.Trumps controversial immigration order - which initially appeared to enjoy widespread support - is now opposed by a majority of Americans: The split is 53-47 per cent according to a CNN poll, 51-45 per cent according to a CBS poll. The Republican president has dismissed the polls as lies. Any negative polls are fake news, just like the CNN, ABC, NBC polls in the election, he tweeted on Monday. Sorry, people want border security and extreme vetting.Meanwhile the travel ban continued to fuel international criticism of the incoming US leader.Irans supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei lashed out at Trump in a speech to military officers in Tehran. We are thankful to this gentleman ... he showed the real face of America, Khamenei said. What we have said for more than 30 years - that there is political, economic, moral and social corruption in the ruling system of the US - this gentleman came and brought it out into the open in the election and after the election.

Iran leader rebuffs Trump's warning on missiles

Posted:

DUBAI (Reuters) - Ayatollah Ali Khamenei dismissed Donald Trumps warning to Iran to stop its missile tests, saying the new U.S. president had shown the real face of American corruption. In his first speech since Trumps inauguration, Irans supreme leader called on Iranians to respond to Trumps threats on Feb. 10, the anniversary of Irans 1979 Islamic revolution. Trump had tried but failed to frighten Iranians, Khamenei said.We are thankful to (Trump) for making our life easy as he showed the real face of America, Khamenei told a meeting of military commanders in Tehran, according to his website. The White House has said the last weeks missile test was not a direct breach of Irans 2015 nuclear pact with six world powers, but that it violates the spirit of that..In remarks published on Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Tehran would not agree to renegotiate its nuclear agreement.I believe Trump will push for renegotiation. But Iran and European countries will not accept that, Mohammad Javad Zarif told Ettelaat newspaper. We will have difficult days ahead. On the campaign trail, Trump repeatedly promised to tear up the nuclear deal. While his Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, has not called for an outright rejection of the accord, he has suggested a full review of it.The supreme leader, Irans top authority, also said Trump has confirmed what we have been saying for more than 30 years about the political, economic, moral and social corruption in the U.S. ruling system.Trump responded to a Jan. 29 Iranian missile test by saying Iran is playing with fire and slapping fresh sanctions on individuals and entities, some of them linked to Irans elite Revolutionary Guards. No enemy can paralyse the Iranian nation, Khamenei said. (Trump) says you should be afraid of me. No The Iranian people will respond to his words on Feb. 10 and will show their stance against such threats.A U.N. Security Council resolution underpinning the pact urges Iran to refrain from testing missiles designed to be able to carry nuclear warheads, but imposes no obligation.Under the accord, Iran agreed to curb its nuclear programme in exchange for relief from some U.S., European and U.N. economic sanctions. Critics of Iran said the deal emboldened Tehran to increase its involvement in wars in Arab countries, a charge Tehran denies.President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday that, in contrast to Trumps view, the nuclear deal was a win-win accord, and could be used as a stepping stone to defuse tension in the region.

Lahm to retire in June and leave Bayern: report

Posted:

Berlin (AFP) – Bayern Munich’s captain Philipp Lahm will retire at the end of the season and leave the Bundesliga leaders having rejected a role as sports director, according to a report.German magazine Sport Bild says in its Wednesday edition the 33-year-old, who made his 500th appearance for Bayern last Saturday, will hang up his boots in June — despite having a year left on his contract. He has apparently also rejected the vacant sports director role because it would not have included a place on Bayern’s board following recent restructuring at the club.Lahm has reportedly already told Bayern of his decision.Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had hinted last November that the club wanted Lahm to fill the role vacated by Matthias Sammer last year.Borussia Moenchengladbach’s sports director Max Eberl is now reportedly the favourite to take the job.Lahm retired from international football after captaining Germany to the 2014 World Cup title in Brazil. He joined Bayern as an 11-year-old in 1995 and skippered the Bavarian giants to their 2013 Champions League win at Wembley. That season, they became the first German club to complete the treble of Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup.He has won the Bundesliga seven times and the German Cup on a further six occasions.

New Israeli settlement legislation violates international law: UN chief

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - A new Israeli law legalising dozens of Jewish settler outposts in the Palestinian West Bank is in violation of international law, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday.Guterres said he deeply regrets the adoption of the bill which many governments worldwide see as the latest bid to erode the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This bill is in contravention of international law and will have far reaching legal consequences for Israel, Guterres said in a statement. The UN chief again stressed the need to avoid any actions that would derail the two-state solution and said such issues must be resolved through negotiations.Settlements in both the West Bank and east Jerusalem are viewed as illegal under international law and major stumbling blocks to peace as they are built on land the Palestinians want for their own state. The new law passed by the Israeli parliament late on Monday allows the appropriation of private Palestinian land for Jewish settler outposts, a move the Palestinians said was a means to legalise theft.Guterres joined an international outcry over the parliaments decision, but the new US administration of President Donald Trump has refused to comment. The law is expected to be challenged in court, with some Israeli officials expecting it to be struck down by the Supreme Court. It would protect settlers against eviction from outposts discovered to have been built on private Palestinian lands. Palestinian owners will be compensated financially or with other land.It would apply to around 53 outposts as well as some houses within existing settlements, potentially legalising more than 3,800 homes, according to anti-settlement NGO Peace Now.The UN Security Council will discuss the dispute over Israeli settlements during a meeting on Feb 15.

Air strikes on Syrian ex-Qaeda branch 'kill 26'

Posted:

BEIRUT (AFP) - Air strikes on Syrias former Al-Qaeda affiliate in the countrys northwest on Tuesday killed 26 people, including civilians, a monitoring group told AFP.The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 10 air strikes battered the headquarters of Fateh al-Sham Front and the surrounding neighbourhood in Idlib city at dawn on Tuesday.Ten civilians, mostly women, are among the dead, Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.The toll could rise because some people are trapped under the rubble and unaccounted for, he added.Abdel Rahman said the raids were likely carried out by Russian warplanes -- allied with Syrias government -- or by a US-backed air coalition.Fateh al-Sham has come under increasing pressure in recent weeks in Idlib province, the only remaining opposition-held province in war-ravaged Syria.Bombing raids against the group have escalated, including one US strike in January that killed more than 100 fighters at a training camp in Idlib province. The US-led coalition has mostly focused on Fateh al-Shams jihadist rival, the Islamic State group, but it has also hit operatives from other groups.Rebel groups have held Idlib province since the spring of 2015, four years after conflict first broke out in March 2011.

Football: Barcelona edge Atletico Madrid after 3 red cards

Posted:

Barcelona (AFP) – Luis Suarez booked Barcelona’s place in a fourth consecutive Copa del Rey final but was sent off as a bad-tempered 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday secured a 3-2 aggregate win.Suarez’s second goal of the tie looked to have put the semi-final beyond the visitors just before half-time.However, the Uruguayan was one of three players sent-off in a pulsating second-half and will miss May’s final against Alaves or Celta Vigo.Kevin Gameiro set up a grandstand finish seven minutes from time moments after blazing a penalty over the bar.But Barca saw out five minutes of stoppage time with nine men after Suarez’s first red card for the club.Atletico needed a first win at the Camp Nou since 2006 to have any chance of overturning a 2-1 first leg deficit inflicted by stunning goals from Suarez and Lionel Messi.Yet, the visitors nearly secured the perfect start with a lightning counter-attack from a Barca corner that ended with Yannick Carrasco stinging the palms of Jasper Cillessen. The Dutch goalkeeper also saved a long range effort from Koke before Filipe Luis’s volley flew just wide.Barca took 27 minutes to have an effort on goal when Messi’s low drive was held by Miguel Angel Moya. However, Atletico’s intense early pressing eased as the half wore on and Barca went in front just before half-time thanks to more magic from Messi and Suarez.Messi sucked in the Atletico defence and when his effort from the edge of the area was parried by Moya, Suarez gobbled up the rebound for his 23rd goal of the season.Atletico were dealt an injury blow at the start of the second period as Diego Godin had to be replaced by Lucas Hernandez just five days after the French defender was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence. However, the visitors were given a glimmer of hope just before the hour mark when Sergi Roberto dived in on Luis and was deservedly shown a second yellow card. That hope should have been bolstered moments later when Antoine Griezmann smashed the ball inside Cillessen’s far post, but was wrongly flagged offside.Barca’s nerves were eased when Atletico were also reduced to 10 men 21 minutes from time when a slip from Carrasco saw him wipe out Arda Turan, the Belgian also being shown a second yellow card.Messi’s incredible run of scoring free-kicks in 2017 nearly continued with a driven effort from fully 35 yards that came crashing back off the bar.Atletico were given a lifeline when Gerard Pique was adjudged to have tripped Gameiro inside the area with 10 minutes remaining.Griezmann had missed his fifth penalty in seven attempts at the weekend and handed over responsiblity to his compatriot, but Gameiro blazed over.Just three minutes later, though, the two combined to great effect as Griezmann’s decision to cross rather than shoot caught the Barca defence off guard and Gameiro rolled into an empty net.Atletico then pilled on the pressure in search of a winning goal on the night to send the game into extra time.Suarez was the thrid player to be shown a second yellow for a stray elbow on Koke. But a great block from Samuel Umtiti to divert Luis’s goalbound drive preserved Barca’s incredible record of not having lost a tie to anyone other than Real Madrid in the Cup sine 2010.

Assad says family do not own Syria, ready to be voted out

Posted:

AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said his family did not own the country they have run for 46 years, saying he would step aside if the Syrian people choose another leader in an election.Assad also told a group of Belgian reporters that he saw promise in U.S. President Donald Trumps determination to fight Islamic State, although it was too early to expect any practical steps, state news agency SANA reported on Tuesday. With backing from Russia and Iran, Assad now seems militarily unassailable in the Syrian civil war that spiralled from protests against his rule nearly six years ago during a wave of uprisings against Arab autocrats.Assad, 51, came to power in 2000 after the death of his father, former President Hafez al-Assad, who became head of state in 1971 after a military coup the previous year.Asked if he could imagine a Syria that was not run by his family, Assad said: Of course. We dont own the country. My family does not own the country.Syria is owned by the Syrians, and every Syrian citizen has the right to be in that position, Assad said.Russia, his most powerful ally, is seeking to revive peace talks aimed at ending a war that has shattered Syria into a patchwork of separate areas and killed hundreds of thousands of people.Russia circulated a reformed Syrian constitution at peace talks in Kazakhstan last month that said no president could serve more than two consecutive terms, according to a copy seen by Reuters.Moscow says the document drafted by Russian specialists was only tabled for the purpose of discussion.Moscows effort to revive peace talks follows the rebels biggest defeat of the war, when they were driven from eastern Aleppo in December by the Syrian army with decisive help from the Russian air force and Iranian-backed militias.Assad said he would step aside if voted out of power in an election - something he has said in the past.If the Syrian people choose another president, I would not have to decide to step down, I will be out of this position, he said in the interview published on Tuesday.Assad controls all the main cities of western Syria, where the bulk of the population live. A presidential election was held in 2014, though the vote was declared a farce by his opponents. Swathes of Syria remain out of his control including areas held by the Islamic State group and a Kurdish militia.Trump has held out the possibility of cooperation with Russia in the fight against Islamic State in Syria. The Kremlin said Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had discussed setting up genuine coordination in the fight against Islamic State and other terrorist groups in Syria during a phone call last month.Assad was quoted by SANA as telling a group of Belgian reporters: I believe this is promising but we have to wait and its too early to expect anything practical.Assad was also quoted as saying that U.S-Russian cooperation in stepping up the fight against the militants would have positive repercussions.Under former U.S. President Barack Obama, the United States ruled out the idea of cooperating with Assad in the fight against Islamic State in Syria, viewing his rule as a big part of the problem.Trump has made defeating Islamic State a core goal of his presidency and signed an executive order asking the Pentagon, the joint chiefs of staff and other agencies to submit a preliminary plan on how to proceed within 30 days. For now, U.S.-Russian cooperation is largely limited to coordinating to ensure that the two countries air forces operate safely and that the risk of accidental confrontation or collision is minimised.
