Barcelona capable of historic Champions League comeback: Suarez

Posted:

Barcelona (AFP) – Barcelona striker Luis Suarez believes the Catalans can become the first side ever to overcome a four-goal first leg deficit in the Champions League when Paris Saint-Germain visit the Camp Nou on March 8.Barca were torn apart in a 4-0 thrashing by the French champions in their last 16 clash on Tuesday, sparking fierce criticism in particular of coach Luis Enrique.“It is difficult to lose like that, particularly in the last 16 of the Champions League, but I think this team is capable of turning around the situation,” Suarez said at a charity event on Friday.“We have to convince ourselves. We are all culpable. When we win, we win together and the same when the opposite happens.“This team has made history by winning the treble, for winning many things in the last few years and if we want to make history as a team, then we have to focus on turning this tie around.“It is a great challenge and we are looking forward to it.”Enrique’s tactics were questioned by midfielders Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta, whilst he confronted a reporter for Catalan TV station TV3 in a fiery post-match interview. The former Barca captain has won eight trophies in his three seasons in charge, but Enrique’s future was already in doubt as his contract expires at the end of the season. And Suarez insists Enrique should have the right to decide whether he continues next season.“We have had good times thanks to him and now we are all suffering together and between us have to move forward,” he added.“The coach is old and mature enough… to know what decision he has taken or will take.“We will accept whatever decision he makes.”

Man Citys Jesus out for two to three months

Posted:

Manchester (AFP) – Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola warned on Friday that teen sensation Gabriel Jesus could be out of action for up to three months and might not play again until next season. The 19-year-old Brazil striker, who has scored three goals in five games since joining City in the January transfer window, broke a bone in his foot during City’s 2-0 win away to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Monday.“He’s coming back when he is fit,” Guardiola told a news conference on Friday. “I don’t know if it will be the end of this season or next season… His recovery is between two and three months.”City paid Brazilian club Palmeiras an initial £27 million ($33 million, 31 million euros) for Jesus. The striker scored at West Ham and twice against Swansea and Jesus was hoping to become the third City player — after Emmanuel Adebayor and Kevin de Bruyne — to score on each of his first three Premier League starts. But he lasted just 15 minutes at south coast side Bournemouth’s Dean Court ground before going off injured.

Chelsea to hold Costa talks at end of season

Posted:

London (AFP) – Antonio Conte is “confident” Diego Costa will remain with Chelsea, even though talks over the striker’s future with the club will have to wait until the end of the season.Last month saw Costa, Premier League leaders Chelsea’s leading scorer this season with 15 goals, linked to a lucrative move to the cash-rich Chinese Super League.Nothing, however, came of the reported interest and now there are suggestions that Costa, whose current contract has more than two years to run, could extend his time with the Blues by signing a new deal.Chelsea manager Conte said he was unaware of any contract discussions, adding he expected everything to be sorted out once the current campaign was over.“I don’t know about this situation,” said Conte, speaking ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup fifth-round tie away to Championship club Wolverhampton Wanderers.“I think now it’s very important to be focused on the present and not to look so far forward. At the end of the season we will see the situation.”Conte, asked if he was confident that 28-year-old Spain striker Costa would still be at Stamford Bridge next season, replied: “Yes, I’m confident. I repeat: now it’s important to keep the great concentration for the present.“The present is tomorrow’s game against Wolverhampton. We must go in the next round, added Conte, who is set to rest David Luiz and Marcus Alonso.Meanwhile Conte has challenged his side, eight points clear at the top of English football, to emulate the Chelsea team of 2009/10 by completing a Premier League and FA Cup double.“Usually I like to win and I like to try to win with my team, every competition in every season,” the Italian said.“We must have this winning mentality. When you are Chelsea’s coach or you are a Chelsea player, you must have this ambition to try to win every competition that you play.“Tomorrow the game won’t be easy. Don’t forget Wolverhampton won against Liverpool away, won against Stoke away.“We must pay great attention, because this team showed in the recent past that they have the possibility to beat great teams.“I hope tomorrow the result will be different and Chelsea to go in the next round.”David Luiz will be rested after playing while managing a knee injury sustained in December in a tackle which saw Sergio Aguero sent off for Manchester City. John Terry could take his place in the centre of defence.Conte has been on the losing side against Wolves manager Paul Lambert when they were both players, although Conte was injured and watching from the sidelines when a Borussia Dortmund team featuring Lambert beat Juventus to win the 1996/97 Champions League final.“This is one of the three finals that I lost,” Conte recalled. “We were favourites. I remember that they were the underdog before the game, but they won very well against us.“He was a good player. I remember very well.“Revenge is not a good word. Now we started a new career me and Lambert, as coaches.“I wish for him the best for his career — after this game. For me it will be a great pleasure to shake his hand,” Conte added.

Chicharito scores twice in Leverkusen victory

Posted:

Berlin (AFP) – Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez was on target twice as Bayer Leverkusen warmed up for their Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid by winning 3-1 at Augsburg in the Bundesliga on Friday.Roger Schmidt’s side went in front midway through the first half when Kai Havertz squared from the right for Karim Bellarabi to score the 50,000th goal in the history of the Bundesliga.Chicharito doubled Leverkusen’s lead from close range after a lovely move inside the box five minutes before half-time, and after Dominik Kohr pulled a goal back on the hour, the Mexican striker netted again from another Havertz assist to secure the win.Leverkusen are having an inconsistent season but a second consecutive win keeps them in touch in the fight for European places and boosts confidence ahead of their Champions League last 16, first leg at home to Atletico on Tuesday.Chicharito scored the winner for Real Madrid when they eliminated Atletico in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2015.

Old boy Dybala stars as Juventus go 10 points clear

Posted:

Turin (AFP) – Juventus went 10 points clear at the top of Serie A on Friday with a 4-1 win over struggling Palermo in a perfectly-timed boost ahead of their Champions League trip to Porto next week.Former Palermo star Paulo Dybala played a pivotal role as the Argentina international pushed his former employers closer to the drop by scoring twice, creating another and also seeing a free-kick come back off the woodwork.Palermo started the day eight points from safety and they were under the cosh almost from the start on Friday.Dybala, who moved to Turin after three seasons at Palermo in 2015, was just centimetres from the opener after only five minutes when he clipped the post with a left-footed free-kick.But the Sicilians’ resistance didn’t last as Claudio Marchisio put Juventus ahead in the 13th minute, finding the net after goalkeeper Josip Posavec could only parry Gonzalo Higuain’s close-range shot.At the other end, veteran ‘keeper Gianluigi Buffon got down low to keep out Palermo’s top scorer Ilija Nestorovski’s attempt from a tight angle. It was a brief scare for the champions who went into the break 2-0 ahead when Dybala curled in a picture-perfect free-kick, this time to the left of Posavec’s despairing dive and into the top corner.Higuain added a third and his 19th league goal of the season in the 63rd minute, latching onto Dybala’s delicately-weighted pass between two defenders.Higuain repaid the favour to his international teammate one minute from time with a cheeky backheel allowing Dybala to slot the ball home.Palermo scored an injury-time consolation through an Ivaylo Chochev header but Juventus will go to Porto for Wednesday’s Champions League last 16, first-leg clash on a fresh wave of confidence.

Guardiola rules out return to Barcelona

Posted:

Manchester (AFP) – Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he will never go back to Barcelona as their coach amid growing uncertainty about present incumbent Luis Enrique’s future.Enrique is out of contract at the Nou Camp at the end of the season, and the chances of him leaving have increased significantly after a calamitous 4-0 defeat away to Paris St-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday. That result, in the first leg of their last 16 tie, left Barcelona on the brink of elimination from the competition, and they also lag behind bitter rivals Real Madrid in the race to win La Liga.Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde is reportedly a contender for the job if Enrique leaves, along with Eusebio Sacristan of Real Sociedad and Everton’s Ronald Koeman, who as a player scored the goal that secured them their first European Cup in 1992.Guardiola, who won 14 trophies in four years as Barcelona’s head coach, says he has no intention of returning to the job he left in 2012.“No, I will never go back to Barcelona to be coach there. My period there is gone.”Despite their stumbles, Barcelona remain the standard bearers of world football, according to Guardiola.“Barcelona are still the best team in the world,” said the 46-year-old Spaniard.“It’s always a surprise because they are so, so good, but in football anything can happen.“There’s a lot of competition, the opposition are so strong. You can win heavily or you can lose heavily, that can happen, it’s happened to me, but there are 90 minutes to go and anything can happen.“If there’s a team who can do it, then it’s Barca, with their mentality.“When you have dominated world football, it’s normal that the people expect you to keep up that level, but my advice to you, knowing Luis and the players a little, is not to talk too much, because they will be back and prove you wrong.“They’ve done it over the years, dominating football for 10 years, and they continue to be the best team in the world.”– ‘Scrap replays’ –Guardiola, meanwhile, has suggested the quality of English football would be improved if FA Cup replays were scrapped.Quarter-final replays were ditched last summer by the Football Association, which had abolished them at the semi-final stage in 1999.Guardiola would prefer to see further action taken, calling for a system similar either to that used in Spain’s Copa del Rey, where all ties bar the final are played over two legs, or Germany’s Cup competition, where drawn matches are decided with extra-time and penalties, without the need for a replay.“In Spain, we play two games. I prefer that situation,” he said.“Maybe for the amount of games played, extra-time and penalties would be good.“But OK, I’m not here to decide the rules of how we play the competition, I’m here to play the competition in the way that the chairmen and the important people decide.“I prefer the quality over the quantity. Not only here in England, all around the world. It’s a big mistake, so many games.“You have to allow people to go to the theatres, the cinemas, the good restaurants and not play every game in front of the TV. We’re going to kill the players.“We could have the same quality, same intensity but a few less games. That is just my point of view.”

Mourinho concerned Cup runs could affect league form

Posted:

Blackburn (AFP) – A significant run of cup ties has Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho worried about fixture congestion, but his chances of ending his first season at the club with a major trophy are looking healthy.Mourinho’s side have won three successive matches without conceding a goal, and are in good spirits as they prepare to make the short journey to face struggling Championship opponents Blackburn in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Sunday. The United manager actually felt his team were a little too cheerful before Thursday’s 3-0 Europa League last-32 first-leg victory over Saint-Etienne, accusing them of being too relaxed during the warm-up.It is true United started slowly against their Ligue 1 opponents, but a Zlatan Ibrahimovic hat-trick has put them in a strong position to secure a last-16 place in France next Wednesday.United are in the midst of a glut of cup fixtures at the moment, with the final of the EFL Cup against Southampton to come at Wembley on February 26, and Mourinho is worried about the effect that may have on their Premier League form.“With the accumulation of FA Cup, League Cup and matches postponed, it is really hard for us,” the Portuguese handler said.“If we progress in the competitions, we will be in trouble in April and May. But we cannot choose competitions, so we play to win.”United won the FA Cup for the first time since 2004 by beating Crystal Palace in last season’s final, and their defence of the trophy has been untroubled so far, with two 4-0 home wins over Championship opponents, Reading and Wigan.– ‘Most amazing Cup in the world’ –While Mourinho may see Premier League improvement as a greater priority, midfielder Ander Herrera is keen for another cup run.“It’s a massive competition. When some teams rotate players, that doesn’t mean they don’t give importance to the FA Cup,” said the 27-year-old Spaniard, who will miss the return Europa League leg as he is suspended.“It’s the oldest competition in England and I think it’s the most amazing Cup in the world because of the organisation.“Every club wants to win the FA Cup, teams not in the top six even more as they can get in the Europa League (through winning it).“So it’s a fantastic competition to play in. We want to keep playing in it and win away against Blackburn.”Mourinho is likely to make changes for the game, and does have injury concerns to contend with.Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick missed the win over Saint-Etienne with minor muscular injuries, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan was absent because of illness.Centre-back Phil Jones could return from a foot injury to face his former club, while Luke Shaw is pushing for a chance after being overlooked for United’s previous four squads.Blackburn, relegated from the Premier League in 2012, are in serious danger of dropping into the third tier League One after a poor campaign that has left them next to bottom of the Championship with 15 matches to play.Supporters have continued to protest against Indian owners Venky’s, the Indian poultry company who they believe have mismanaged the club since buying it in 2010.As if off-field disharmony and league struggles were not enough for manager Owen Coyle to contend with, he goes into Sunday’s tie with his squad stretched to its limit.Striker Hope Akpan is suspended after being sent off for pushing referee Scott Duncan during Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday, while winger Elliott Bennett is also banned.Former United defender Wes Brown, though, may feature for Blackburn at the venerable age of 37.“We will be underdogs,” striker Marvin Emnes said.“The most important thing is that we enjoy the game and try to win it.”

US' Tillerson calms allies on Syria ahead of Geneva talks

Posted:

BONN (Reuters) - US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, trying to reassure allies that Washington was not tilting towards Moscow over the Syrian conflict, told them on Friday that the United States backed UN efforts to broker a political solution to the war, officials and diplomats said.Tillerson also said military ties with Russia hinged on its stance towards rebels fighting the government of President Bashar al-Assad, who Russia backs.Countries opposed to Assad met on Friday for the first time since Donald Trump took office as US president in a bid to find common ground ahead of UN-backed peace negotiations in Geneva next week. All eyes have been on Washington and its approach to ending the war in Syria, given promises by Trump to build closer ties to Russia, especially in the fight against Islamic State. His policy on Syria has been unclear.Western diplomats said that in talks on the sidelines of a G20 foreign ministers meeting, Tillerson had stressed the importance of sticking to UN efforts to reach a political solution based on Security Council Resolution 2254 under the special envoy on Syria, Staffan de Mistura. The envoy will convene a new round of peace talks among Syrian factions next Thursday. The diplomats also said Tillerson had stressed that Moscows position to align itself with the Syrian government to label all rebels as terrorists would make military cooperation between Washington and Moscow complicated. In the discussion, he made it clear that there would not be military cooperation until the Russians accepted that not all the opposition are terrorists, one diplomat said.Assad is in his strongest position since the early days of the civil war, which began as a popular uprising in the spring of 2011before spiraling into a war that has killed up to 400,000 combatants and civilians. The United States, along with Gulf Arab States and Turkey, backs rebel forces but the situation is complicated by the role of hardline Islamist factions, including Islamic State, in the anti-Assad movement who are opposed by both Washington and Moscow.French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault told reporters Fridays exchange had been useful. We ask the Russian backer of the regime to put pressure on it so it stops considering that all the opposition are terrorists, Ayrault said. Otherwise, there will be no discussion in Geneva.German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said after the meeting, which included the United States, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, France and Britain, that it was clear that all wanted a political solution. This political solution must be achieved in Geneva under the auspices of the United Nations and that there cannot be any parallel negotiations, Gabriel told reporters.Russia has sought to revive diplomacy since its air force helped to defeat rebels in Aleppo in December, the Syrian leaders biggest victory to date. Nearly six years into the war, Assad seems militarily unassailable thanks to the decisive backing of Russia and Iran.It has held a series of parallel intra-Syrian negotiations in coordination with Turkey and Iran in the Kazakh capital Astana to reinforce a shaky ceasefire and has tried to expand the scope to cover political aspects. On Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the United States supported the Russian-sponsored talks, which ended with no joint communique and opposing Syrian groups exchanging angry tirades. The Russians are trying to pilot a separate process, said one diplomat. Geneva is an extremely fragile process and we want to avoid it being chaotic.
