Back spasm forces Woods withdrawal from Dubai event

Posted:

DUBAI Reuters) - Former world number one Tiger Woods has pulled out of the Dubai Desert Classic ahead of his second round because of a back spasm, the European Tour said on Friday. The American 14-times major champion, now ranked 666th after his long injury layoff due to a series of back issues, shot a miserable five-over 77 on Thursday, a round in which he failed to record a single birdie in perfect conditions.Woods agent Mark Steinberg said the player started to feel pain on Thursday night and regretted having to pull out.He went into a spasm in his lower back very late last night after dinner, Steinberg told reporters. We tried to work it out last night (but) really didnt get worked out.We had treatment starting very early this morning for the past three, three and half hours, but cant get the back spasm to calm down. He feels terrible.Steinberg said the problem was not the same nerve pain that caused Woods lengthy absence from the sport.Appearing for the eighth time in Dubai, where he has won twice before, the 41-year-old Woods looked out of sorts in his opening round as he continued his comeback at the European Tour event. His chances of avoiding another early exit looked slim on Thursday, however, with the American appearing to be in some discomfort as he struggled to find a rhythm. After his round, Woods said he had not felt any pain on the course but failed to even make it to the practice range on Friday, withdrawing from the event a distant 12 shots behind overnight leader Sergio Garcia.Woods had also looked rusty when he played his first full-field PGA Tour event in 17 months a week ago after being sidelined by back pain and spine surgery, comfortably missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. The latest setback could put Woods participation in his next scheduled event in doubt with the American due to tee off at the PGA Tour Genesis Open at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California on Feb. 16.Woods is then scheduled to play in the Honda Classic in Florida a week later.

Mourinho vexed by Man United scoring problems

Posted:

Manchester (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Manchester United’s players must give Zlatan Ibrahimovic more support if they are to make a serious challenge for Champions League qualification, manager Jose Mourinho said on Friday.Ibrahimovic has scored 14 of United’s 33 Premier League goals this season and many of them have been decisive, earning United no fewer than 15 points. No other player has scored more than four league goals and they were all off-target on Wednesday as relegation-threatened Hull City secured a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.“In almost every team the striker is the top scorer,” Mourinho told a press conference at United’s training base west of Manchester prior to Sunday’s trip to Leicester City.“Unless you have another player with a special feeling to score goals coming from another position, or you have another player scoring six, seven or eight goals from penalties. That is normal to happen.“But I understand what you are saying. We attack so much and with so many players and so many players have the freedom in our dynamic to reach scoring positions.“I have to agree with you that we don’t score enough goals and some of our players from these attacking, creative positions, they could –- they should –- score more goals.“When you see the number of goals we score, there is not a true relation between our attacking production and the number of players we put in attacking positions and the number of goals we score.”United are unbeaten in 14 league games as they prepare for the trip to the King Power Stadium, but have drawn seven of those, including each of the last three. They have not shifted from sixth place since the start of November and currently lie four points off the Champions League qualification spots.Meanwhile, Mourinho has dismissed the idea of chasing what he calls “impossible” signings during the close season.Reports in France claim United have agreed terms with Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann, having brought his France team-mate Paul Pogba to Old Trafford last year. But Mourinho said: “I think to be speaking about the transfer window when it’s February 3 makes no sense at all.“The transfer window opens in the summer and until the summer, I think I have nothing to tell you.“Of course, I know what I want. I’ve worked with my players for seven months or so. I know them better now than six or seven months ago.“I think what we need I am very realistic (about). I know what the impossible targets are.“I don’t like my club to participate in impossible deals. It is a waste of time. It is a gift to these impossible players and to their agents to have a club like Manchester United interested in them.“It just helps them to improve their situation, but it does not help us at all so I am very realistic. I am very objective.“My board knows what I think our needs are and from now until the summer, I just focus on my players, our competitions, my club, our fans and try to get the (best) possible results.”Centre-back Phil Jones is likely to miss the trip to Leicester with a bruised foot, but Eric Bailly is available after returning from Africa Cup of Nations duty with the Ivory Coast.United have recalled back-up goalkeeper Dean Henderson from a loan spell at Grimsby Town to provide cover after Joel Pereira, the club’s third-choice keeper, picked up a knee injury.

Cup revenge on agenda for Real Madrid, Barca

Posted:

Madrid (AFP) – Real Madrid hope to have Luka Modric and Marcelo back fit as they seek to exact revenge for their recent Copa del Rey elimination at the hands of Celta Vigo when they return to Balaidos on Sunday.Celta weathered a second-leg storm at home after pulling off a surprise 2-1 first-leg win at the Santiago Bernabeu to progress to the last four 4-3 on aggregate just over a week ago. However, the roles from the second leg of that tie look set to be reversed as a far stronger Real side travels north with Celta boss Eduardo Berizzo set to make a series of changes with his side’s Cup semi-final, second leg away at Alaves on Wednesday in mind.Modric and Marcelo have missed the last two games through injury, but both returned to training on Thursday and could feature. The presence of Modric in midfield would be doubly important to Zinedine Zidane’s men with Toni Kroos suspended.Berizzo has heavily rotated his Celta side in their past two La Liga outings to prioritise the Cup.And with the Galicians just 90 minutes away from a first Cup final since 2001 with the tie against Alaves delicately poised at 0-0, the Argentine expected to do so again with the likes of top scorer Iago Aspas dropping to the bench.– Barca host Bilbao –Cup revenge will also be on Athletic Bilbao’s minds when they travel to face Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Saturday.Barca dumped Athletic out of the Copa del Rey for the sixth time in nine years in January and need a similar outcome to prevent Real running away with the title. The champions trail their eternal rivals by four points having also played a game more after a disappointing display in drawing 1-1 at Real Betis last weekend.Barca bounced back to remain on course for a fourth straight Cup final by beating Atletico Madrid 2-1 in their semi-final, first leg at the Vicente Calderon in midweek. And Luis Enrique’s men could be handed a double injury boost themselves as Andres Iniesta returned to training on Thursday and Sergio Busquets is nearing a comeback form ankle ligament damage.Enrique has defended his decision to rotate his squad throughout a demanding January and February of league and Cup commitments with a return to Champions League action at Paris Saint-Germain on February 14 also on the horizon.“Between injuries, suspensions and tiredness, there is no other way. I rotate or we don’t challenge in all competitions,” Enrique said this week. Therefore, Rafinha, Arda Turan and Denis Suarez are all likely to feature after being left on the bench in midweek.Defeat to Barca in midweek left Atletico’s final season at the Calderon in danger of petering out without a trophy.Diego Simeone’s men have failed to win in any of their last four games and face a fight just to qualify for the Champions League next season rather than battling Madrid and Barca for the title.Atletico are 10 points adrift of their city rivals and just a point ahead of Real Sociedad in fourth. However, they will be confident of a return to winning ways when lowly Leganes visit the Calderon on Saturday without a win in their last 10 games.Third-placed Sevilla’s title ambitions were dealt a blow with a 3-1 defeat at Espanyol last weekend to leave them four points off the pace. And Jorge Sampaoli’s men’s title credentials face another stiff test when sixth-placed Villarreal visit the Sanchez Pizjuan in the Sunday lunchtime kick-off.Fixures (GMT)FridayDeportivo la Coruna v Real Betis (1945)SaturdayMalaga v Espanyol (1200), Barcelona v Athletic Bilbao (1515), Atletico Madrid v Leganes (1730), Valencia v Eibar (1945)SundaySevilla v Villarreal (1100), Sporting Gijon v Alaves (1515), Real Sociedad v Osasuna (1730), Celta Vigo v Real Madrid (1945)MondayGranada v Las Palmas (1945)

Antonio Conte warns Chelsea players not to let levels drop

Posted:

London (AFP) – Chelsea manager Antonio Conte warned his players not to succumb to complacency ahead of the Premier League leaders’ home game against Arsenal on Saturday.Chelsea are nine points clear of second-place Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, who trail their north London rivals on goal difference, and odds-on favourites for the title. But Conte, who won eight Serie A titles with Juventus — five as a player and three as a coach — says there is still a long way to go.“Anything can happen. It’s important to keep the antenna very high,” he told his pre-match press conference at Chelsea’s training base in Cobham, southwest of London, on Friday.“If someone thinks that the league is finished, I’m not so sure. I want to have this tension, this right tension. In the past I fight to win the title and I know we must pay great attention.“There are 15 games to play and there are a lot of great teams behind us.”Chelsea lost 3-0 at Arsenal in late September, a game that saw Conte switch to a 3-4-3 formation, which prompted a run of 13 successive wins. They have dropped points only twice in 17 league games since the defeat at the Emirates Stadium, losing 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur last month and drawing 1-1 at Liverpool on Tuesday. But Conte says he has kept the loss at Arsenal in his thoughts as a reminder both of how far his team have come and how important it is they maintain their current standards.“This defeat seems far (away), but it’s important to remember the defeat against Arsenal,” he said.“It was a bad defeat, 3-0 after the first half. And in my mind it’s present, it’s always present, this defeat.“I hope also in the mind of my players. I think it’s important to remember the first game against Arsenal. A lot of things changed now. For sure we are a team. We want to have a good game tomorrow.”Conte was once again obliged to field questions about the future of striker Diego Costa after reports in Spain suggested he will leave for China at the end of the season. The Chelsea manager expressed confidence that Costa was in a positive frame of mind, but, perhaps tellingly, refused to look beyond the end of the campaign.“Every week I hear a lot of news, a lot of speculation about Diego,” Conte said.“I think now the most important thing is to be focused on this championship. We are in a good position. Diego is an important player for us, is very happy to stay for us.“The summer is far. It’s important to think in the present.”

Klopp warns Liverpool to be wary of Hull threat

Posted:

Kingston upon Hull (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Jurgen Klopp has warned Liverpool not to underestimate Hull when they try to revive their title challenge at the Premier League strugglers on Saturday.Klopp’s side must go one better than Manchester United and beat Hull in the league after the Tigers ground out a goalless draw at Old Trafford in midweek. In the midst of a difficult period, Liverpool looked back to something approaching their best in a spirited 1-1 draw against leaders Chelsea on Tuesday. But Liverpool, trailing 10 points behind Chelsea, have won just one of their nine fixtures in 2017 and Klopp believes second-bottom Hull will offer tough opposition despite their lowly position.“I was really impressed by the way they played against Man United,” Klopp said. “They did not look like a team one place from bottom of the division.“They played United three times in the league and cup, that’s not easy to do, and they did really well against them.”Klopp admits he was fortunate to avoid punishment following his highly publicised confrontation with fourth official Neil Swarbrick this week — an escape which enraged United manager Jose Mourinho.Klopp bellowed aggressively in Swarbrick’s face during his team’s draw with Chelsea, shouting “No one can beat us”.According to Klopp, the official replied: “No problem, I like your passion.”Just 24 hours later, Mourinho made reference to the incident while claiming he was threatened with a sending off for similar behaviour during United’s frustrating draw with Hull.“I think it depends on the fourth official. We all know what we can do,” Klopp said.“When I saw the picture of me afterwards it didn’t look too nice but it was not as bad as it looked so that is why I said what happened.“Maybe I was lucky with what the fourth official said because I’ve never heard something like this before.“There are different ways to handle the situation. It is quite an emotional game and to switch off emotions is not that simple.“We struggle — not only myself and Jose but Arsene Wenger and a lot of other people struggle.”Hull manager Marco Silva has urged his players to build on the battling point at United which lifted his side off the bottom of the table. The Tigers are set to be backed by the KCOM Stadium’s biggest crowd of the season — in excess of 24,000 — as they go in search of only a second league win in three months.“The result at Old Trafford is one that will give us confidence to take into another difficult game,” Silva said.“We showed exactly the kind of character, attitude and organisation we need for the rest of the season, and showed also that we have some quality in the team.“It was a valuable point, but we know that we need more than that to achieve our goal.”Kamil Grosicki, the Poland midfielder signed from French side Rennes on deadline day, is in contention to make his debut for a Hull side four points adrift of safety in their attempts to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.“We have a tough schedule at the moment, but we are improving with each game,” Silva said.

UN refugee chief opposes 'safe zones' in Syria

Posted:

BEIRUT (AP) - The U.N.s top official on refugees pushed back against a proposed initiative that has gained recent traction to create safe zones in Syria for refugees, saying the country was not the right place for the initiative.Lets not waste time planning safe zones that will not be set up because they will not be safe for people to go back, said Filippo Grandi, the U.N. High Commissioner on Refugees.Let us concentrate on making peace so that everywhere becomes safe. That should be the investment, he said.U.S. President Donald Trump has floated safe zones as a substitute for resettling refugees in the United States and elsewhere around the globe. The president explored schemes with Jordanian King Abdullah II in a face-to-face meeting in Washington, D.C. on Thursday. Jordan is host to some 650,000 Syrian refugees.Turkey and Lebanon, which both border Syria, are also pushing for safe zones across their borders. The two countries host 3.75 million refugees between them.Grandi cited terrorism and the fragmentation of Syria and its warring parties as obstacles to creating working safe zones in the country.Damascus has expressed its deep concern over the various proposals, saying they would have to be set up in coordination with the Syrian government.Trump plunged the international refugee system into crisis last week when he issued an executive order forbidding refugees to enter the U.S. for 120 days.Grandi called the executive order a dangerous weakening of the established international norms to protect refugees. He spoke in Beirut a day after returning from a field mission to Syria. He said the war-torn country was devastated and likened many urban zones to ghost cities. These are people that flee from danger, they are not dangerous themselves, he said of refugees. The six-year-long war has displaced half the countrys population.Grandi criticized the U.S. and Western nations for not doing enough to share the burden of resettling Syrian refugees.(Lebanon) hosted more than 1 million people in the last three years, why cant rich countries host even a much smaller number? he said.Meanwhile, Turkey hosted talks with Syrian opposition members on Friday ahead of U.N.-backed negotiations with the Damascus government in Geneva later this month.Participants included political and military representatives of the Syrian opposition such as Riad Hijab of the High Negotiations Committee, and Syrian National Coalition President Anas al-Abdah, according to Turkish Foreign Ministry officials. Those attending denounced federalism as a solution for war-torn Syria and spoke out against a new constitution, autonomy and federalism. They also affirmed that those opposing Syrias unity have no place in Geneva, according to Turkish officials who requested anonymity in line with government regulations.A Syrian Kurdish group recently in Moscow had proposed creating federal units in Syria to resolve the war. Ankara regards the Syrian Kurds as an extension of its own Kurdish insurgency.Russias foreign ministry said in a statement that the Russian embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus had come under shelling from a rebel-controlled suburb of Damascus both Thursday and Friday, but no one has been hurt. It said one mortar round fell inside the compound and another exploded near the embassys main entrance, inflicting unspecified damage. The ministry described the treacherous shelling as an attempt to derail a truce brokered by Russia and Turkey and hurt peace efforts.Furthermore, The Russian military said its long-range bombers had raided positions of the Islamic State group in eastern Syria, the latest in a series of such strikes over the past two weeks. The Russian Defense Ministry said Tu-22M3 bombers flew from their base in Russia to strike IS weapons depots near al-Mayadin in the province of Deir el-Zour Friday. It was the sixth such raid in the area since Jan. 21.Syrian troops have been struggling to repel an IS offensive in Deir el-Zour since last month. The extremists control the entire province except for a small pocket of the provincial capital and a nearby air base.Elsewhere in Syria, opposition activists and IS said Friday that U.S.-led coalition aircraft were behind airstrikes that destroyed the main pipeline supplying water to the northern Syrian city of Raqqa, the de facto capital of the Islamic State group, as well as two bridges linking it with the southern countryside. The coalition has been targeting IS in the area for more than two years and U.S.-backed Kurdish-led fighters have been on the offensive in nearby areas, mostly north of Raqqa. The city is the de facto capital of ISs self-declared caliphate and has been held by the extremist group since January 2014.The attacks on Raqqa are similar to those conducted in Iraq late last year when Iraqi forces began their offensive to capture the city of Mosul from the extremists. Destroying bridges makes it difficult for IS to move fighters but many complain that the adverse effects are worse for civilians. In a statement Friday, the U.S.-led coalition said it carried out 21 strikes near Raqqa, destroying 53 oil barrels, 39 oil storage tanks, four oil wellheads, four tunnel entrances, two tunnels, as well as damaging eight supply routes. It didnt provide further details. There was no immediate word about targeting the water pipeline.Syrian state news agency SANA and an IS-affiliated website said early Friday that the citys main water pipeline was damaged in an airstrike. It added that two other bridges outside of the city were also hit.The IS-affiliated website also reported that the only two bridges on the Euphrates river on the southern edge of the city have been hit.Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently, a local media collective, criticized the destruction of the two bridges and the severing of the citys water supply, saying that such acts are absolutely unacceptable. One of the bridges carried the water pipeline. The activist-operated group later said the citys water flow had been partially restored after militants fixed the pipeline. The anti-IS group blasted the U.S.-led coalition, saying it is trying to besiege the civilians of Raqqa by demolishing bridges and destroying the infrastructure. The bridges had been hit before but the damage this time is more severe, according to the group. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of on-the-ground activists to track Syrias war, reported clashes between IS fighters and the U.S.-backed Kurdish-led Syria Democratic Forces north of the city. It said the U.S.-led coalition has been providing air cover to SDF fighters during Fridays fighting. The attack comes at a time when Iraqi forces are on the offensive against IS in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul where the U.S.-led coalition has destroyed much of the bridges on the Tigris river.

Divided on Trump, EU insists on European unity

Posted:

VALLETTA (Reuters) - European Union leaders said they agreed to stick together in dealing with Donald Trump, but at their first summit since he took office they were at odds on how far to confront or engage with the new U.S. president.Trump and his policies, from questioning the value of NATO and free trade to banning Muslim refugees, came up repeatedly in discussions in Malta on external challenges facing the Union.British Prime Minister Theresa May, about to lead her country out of the EU, briefed peers on her visit to Washington last week and assured them Trump was committed to cooperating in their defense -- just as Britain would also be after Brexit.Francois Hollande, the outgoing Socialist president of France, led criticism of Trump, calling it unacceptable for him to applaud Brexit and forecast the break-up of the EU. In thinly veiled rebukes to May and some eastern states, he warned of trying to cut their own transatlantic deals.A lot of countries should think of their future first of all in the European Union rather than imagining I dont what kind of bilateral relationship with the United States, he said.Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, who like many in the east is alarmed by Trumps conciliatory noises to Moscow, poured cold water on Mays suggestion Britain could be a link to Washington. Europe did not need a bridge, she was quoted as saying, because it could communicate with Trump on Twitter. But her Polish neighbor, Beata Szydlo, reserved her main criticisms for her predecessor as prime minister, EU summit chair Donald Tusk, who described Trump this week as a threat to the EU, along with Russia, China and militant Islam.European politicians trying to build this sense of fear ... are making a mistake, said Szydlo, whose government, like Trump, has spoken out against Muslim immigration. One cannot be confrontational in our relations with the United States.Stressing the need for unity, the blocs dominant leader, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, said Europeans still had common ground with the United States in many areas, while not sharing Trumps scepticism about many international institutions. We have again made very clear our common values and our faith in multilateralism, she told a news conference. The Union would, she said, push for free trade deals with more nations as Trump pulls back. But cooperation with the United States against militant threats would continue, she said. One EU diplomat said France was clearly pushing to use the Trump presidency to rally Europeans behind a policy of greater distance from Washington and turning to the EU, rather than NATO, for their security. The Germans are much more cautious, the diplomat said. There is a clear issue to be decided: whether we seek common ground to engage with the United States, or turn our backs.Summit host Joseph Muscat, the Maltese prime minister, chose to emphasize balance in summing up the discussions, speaking of concern at Trumps policy but no sense of anti-Americanism.There was a sense that we need to engage with the U.S. just the same, Muscat said. But we need to show that we cannot stay silent where there are principles involved.

US revoked 60,000 visas after Trump order

Posted:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States revoked 60,000 travel visas after President Donald Trump ordered a ban on visitors from seven mainly-Muslim countries, the State Department said Friday (Feb 3).Fewer than 60,000 individuals visas were provisionally revoked to comply with the Executive Order, said Will Cocks, spokesman for the departments bureau of consular affairs. We recognize that those individuals are temporarily inconvenienced while we conduct our review under the Executive Order, he said.To put that number in context, we issued over 11 million immigrant and non-immigrant visas in fiscal year 2015, he said, insisting national security remains top priority.A week ago, Trump issued an executive order halting arrivals for at least 90 days for the citizens of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. All refugee arrivals from around the world were also halted, in this case for 120 days.During the 90 day period, the US administration will review visa procedures with a view to introducing what Trump has called extreme vetting to weed out extremists.US officials have denied the ban amounts to an anti-Muslim measure, despite the order saying religious minorities in the mainly-Muslim countries will get priority treatment.Trump said the move is needed to tighten US security against foreign terror threats, citing the September 11, 2001 attacks despite the hijackers having no links to the named countries. In the days after the move, dozens of visitors with valid visas and many with Green Card residency permits were detained on arrival at airports and many were sent back. The White House has said 109 people were held for questioning upon arrival under Trumps executive order. US media have cited homeland security officials as saying many hundreds were denied boarding to the US as the ban was rolled out.
