Bayerns Alonso limps out of training ahead of Arsenal clash

Posted:

Berlin (AFP) – Midfield star Xabi Alonso is an injury concern for Bayern Munich ahead of their Champions League last 16 home leg against Arsenal after being hurt in Monday’s training session.German daily Bild and broadcaster Sport1.de both reported the 35-year-old was hurt in a tackle by fellow Spain international Javi Martinez, with Bayern hosting the Gunners at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday. In freezing weather, Alonso was left clutching his knee in clear discomfort.Bayern said he was immediately taken to the dressing room as a precautionary measure but should be able to train again on Tuesday. The Bavarian giants are already set to be without defender Jerome Boateng and winger Franck Ribery, who are still recovering from shoulder and thigh injuries respectively.Arsenal are looking to break their last 16 jink having lost at this stage of the competition each of the last six seasons.Bayern knocked Arsenal out of the Champions League in the last 16 in both 2012-13 and 2013-14.The return leg will take place in London on March 7.

PSG looking to break the deadlock against Barcelona

Posted:

Paris (AFP) – Paris Saint-Germain host Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday with their Spanish coach Unai Emery desperate to improve his awful personal record against the Catalans.Emery was brought to the French capital last year as the successor to Laurent Blanc in order to help take PSG to the next level in Europe after four consecutive quarter-final exits in the Champions League. But finishing second in their group behind Arsenal exposed PSG to a tougher draw in the first knockout round and now they must beat the Spanish champions — the second leg will be at the Camp Nou next month — just to make it to the last eight again.Emery, the former Sevilla boss, has come up against Barcelona 23 times in his coaching career and won just once, in La Liga last season.Paris, meanwhile, have been knocked out of the Champions League by Barcelona twice in recent campaigns, losing in the quarter-finals in 2013 and again in 2015 to Lionel Messi, Neymar and co.“For me this is a good opportunity,” Emery told reporters at the Parc des Princes on Monday.“It is an important moment in the season because it is the Champions League which is a very clear objective for the club and it is against Barcelona.“We want to be playing against the best teams in Europe and the world. I carry the responsibility, but we need to be positive, have confidence in the team, and confidence in our own ability.”There is certainly a new-found confidence at the Parc des Princes after a fine start to 2017 which has seen them win 10 and draw one of their last 11 games in all competitions. They are fresh from a 3-0 victory at Bordeaux in Ligue 1 on Friday, in which Edinson Cavani scored twice to take him to 33 goals in all competitions this season.“Every time we play Barcelona we go out believing we can win, but things don’t always go the way we want them to go. What is for sure is that we are working hard and we are convinced we will have our part to play,” said Cavani, who turns 30 on the day of the game. The French champions have beaten Barcelona in the recent past, claiming a 3-2 win in the group stage in September 2014.They are also a formidable proposition at the Parc des Princes, having lost just once there in Europe in the last decade, albeit that was against Barcelona two years ago.Emery will be unable to utilise veteran midfielder Thiago Motta, the ex-Barcelona player, due to suspension. Meanwhile, one winger from Angel Di Maria, Lucas Moura and January signing Julian Draxler will have to settle for a place on the bench.

Goetze left out of Dortmund's squad for Benfica clash

Posted:

Berlin (AFP) – Germany’s World Cup winner Mario Goetze has been left out of Borussia Dortmund’s squad for Tuesday’s Champions League last 16, first-leg, clash against Benfica. The 24-year-old has fallen out of favour with coach Thomas Tuchel after a string of below-par performances and is struggling with a leg injury, which kept him out of Saturday’s shock 2-1 defeat at Bundesliga bottom side Darmstadt.“For him, the game in Lisbon came a bit too soon,” Dortmund’s director of sport Michael Zorc told BVB.de.Injury and loss of form mean Goetze, who scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, has played just 24 minutes of football so far in 2017.Dortmund have been boosted with the return of both captain Marcel Schmelzer and Lukasz Piszczek, who missed the Darmstadt defeat with injury.Wingers Ousmane Dembele and Marco Reus have both shaken off knocks picked up in Darmstadt.

Cristiano Ronaldo injury scare ahead of Reals Napoli clash

Madrid (AFP) – Cristiano Ronaldo trained apart from the team on Monday just two days ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League last 16 home leg against Napoli. The Portuguese goal machine with a record 96 Champions League strikes to his name suffered a heavy tackle in a 3-1 win over Osasuna at the weekend. And as the rest of the Real Madrid squad trained on ball skills Monday “Cristiano Ronaldo and Fabio Coentrão trained inside the facilities’ the Real website reported. Ronaldo suffered a knock to his right leg, according to press reports, adding he was expected to shake off the injury in time to play Wednesday. On a happier note for the 10 times European champions Welsh forward Gareth Bale took full part in training Monday, looking fresh, sharp and upbeat after three months out with a heel injury.Bale will take no part in Wednesday’s game but could well be back in the starting line up for the February 22 return leg in Naples.

Robben says Bayern must raise game against Gunners

Posted:

Berlin (AFP) – Evergreen Arjen Robben says Bayern Munich must raise their game for Wednesday’s key Champions League clash against Arsenal with time running out for him to again lift the European trophy. The 33-year-old scored Bayern’s winning goal in the 2013 final at Wembley to seal the 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund. He has a Bayern contract until June 2018, but time is running out for the injury-prone Dutch winger to get his hands on the Champions League trophy again.“I am happy to play Bayern one more year,” he said in January after signing a one-year extension.“The team is one of the best in the world.”After winning the English and Spanish league titles at Chelsea and Real Madrid respectively, Robben has been with Bayern since 2009, lifting the Bundesliga trophy on five occasions and the German Cup four times. His best season with Bayern was the golden 2012/13 campaign. He was a key figure with 13 goals in 31 games when Bayern became the first German club to win the treble of European, domestic club and league titles and won the Bundesliga with a 19-point margin.Robben scored in both the 4-0 home semi-final rout of Barcelona and the 3-0 away victory at the Camp Nou on golden nights for the Bavarians.Since then, Robben and Bayern have endured semi-final exits in Europe by Barcelona, Real Madrid and then Atletico Madrid in each of the last three seasons under Pep Guardiola. This season, under the Catalan’s successor Carlo Ancelotti, Bayern are currently seven points clear at the top of the Bundesliga. But Robben is concerned by lacklustre recent performances in 2-1 league wins at both Freiburg and Werder Bremen, then a 1-1 home draw with Schalke before needing two late goals to see off struggling Ingolstadt. He netted 60 seconds after Arturo Vidal’s 90th-minute goal to get Bayern out of jail with a 2-0 win last Saturday at relegation-threatened Ingolstadt.

Guardiola rejects talk of title despite Manchester City revival

Posted:

Bournemouth (AFP) – Pep Guardiola is refusing to talk up his team’s title credentials despite three successive league wins taking Manchester City to within eight points of leaders Chelsea.A 2-0 win at Bournemouth on Monday saw City leapfrog three sides and climb into second place after a goal in each half was enough to see off the challenge of Bournemouth at The Vitality Stadium. But Guardiola conceded he can’t imagine Chelsea letting such a commanding lead slip in the remaining thirteen games of the season.“It’s so difficult because they have to lose three games and you have to win all the games and you know how difficult it is to win all the games in the Premier League,” said Guardiola.“Now before the game we were sixth and after the game we are second.“That means the gap in those teams is nothing. But to Chelsea, still the gap is massive. Eight points is such a lot.”This was an accomplished away performance from City who were slick in possession and lethal on the counter.“I am so so happy for the result,” said Guardiola.“We play really good in all circumstances, especially in the last ten, 15 minutes. We had a thousand, million passes. We monopolized the ball. We controlled the game with the passes. It’s the best way to avoid the opponents.”Raheem Sterling had struck the post three minutes before he opened the scoring with the assist for his goal coming from the outstanding Leroy Sane.“Since the game against Arsenal, I think he (Sane) made a click. He’s so fast, his intensity helped us a lot and 20 years old so, I’m so happy for Manchester City because we will have a good player for many years,” said Guardiola of the former Schalke forward.– ‘Pray for Jesus’ –This victory came at the cost of an injury to prodigious Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus who, up until withdrawing with a foot injury after 14 minutes, had been keeping Sergio Aguero out of the starting eleven since his arrival in Manchester.“Tomorrow morning we’ll know it,” said Guardiola of the injury with the City manager adding he planned to “pray for Jesus.”Aguero made the impact Guardiola would have hoped for.City’s second came when Sterling bamboozled Adam Smith with a series of step-overs and crossed for Aguero who poked the ball in via Tyrone Mings’ toe.“I’m happy for him (Aguero). For how he played, for how he fights,” said Guardiola.“He’s an important player but for the last three games he didn’t play because the three guys in front were amazing.”Eddie Howe can be pleased with the way his side applied themselves but, with no wins so far in 2017, it is points Bournemouth need, not performances — they are without a win this year and only six points above the relegation places.“I can’t ask anymore of the players in terms of how they conducted themselves tonight,” said Howe.“I just thought they were better.“I thought they were very very good, I have to say but my players couldn’t have given any more to the game physically. The attitude and the motivation was at a really good level. I think today is a positive step forward for the team.”Howe too was blighted by injuries and forced into two changes when first Simon Francis and then Jack Wilshere left the field with hamstring and ankle injuries respectively.“He’s just feeling his ankle,” said Howe of Wilshere. “I don’t think there’s any major injury there. He’s felt a pain in his ankle so we’ll have to assess him.”

Pressure on Wenger to break Bayern curse in Champions League

Posted:

Munich (AFP) – Arsene Wenger is once again under pressure to end Arsenal’s Champions League last-16 misery as the Gunners travel to bogey team Bayern Munich in Wednesday’s first leg.Bayern are riding a record 15-match home winning streak in Europe with the midweek clash marking the 11th meeting between the sides at Munich’s Allianz Arena in the Champions League.Arsenal have suffered last-16 defeats in each of the last six seasons, losing to Bayern in both 2013 and 2014, and another early exit would further ramp up the pressure on 67-year-old Wenger to quit after 20 years in charge. The teams know each other well, having met six times in the last four years, and Bayern thrashed the Gunners 5-1 in Munich in their previous meeting in November 2015.Arsenal warmed up for their trip to Germany with a 2-0 win over Hull as Alexis Sanchez scored both goals to stop the rot following back-to-back league defeats to Chelsea and Watford. The Gunners are confident for the Allianz Arena leg with the return in London on March 7.“If we put in our best performance, then we can beat Bayern as well,” Arsenal’s German defender Shkodran Mustafi told Sky.“It’s down to us and it’s in our hands.”Arsenal beat Bayern 2-0 in Munich in 2013, but still lost the last-16 tie following a 3-1 defeat in the first leg in London as the Germans went on to win that year’s final at Wembley.“We have already won there and I feel we have a chance to go through,” said Wenger.– Ozil form concerns –Midfielder Mesut Ozil, another Germany international, is enduring a dip in form, though, and has not scored since early December.“It’s time for him to score again,” said Wenger. “I felt he did not feel confident (against Hull).“It’s always a problem because you think he can deliver something special.”Arsenal are third in the English Premier League, 10 points behind leaders Chelsea, while Bayern are seven clear in Germany’s top flight. The Bavarians have reached the semi-final stage in Europe in each of the last three years, but Bayern are itching to go one better and reach the Cardiff final on June 3.Despite their lead in the Bundesliga, Bayern have turned in below-par performances in recent weeks and needed two late goals to earn a 2-0 win at relegation-threatened Ingolstadt on Saturday.Xabi Alonso suffered an injury scare in training on Monday, while Bayern will be missing defender Jerome Boateng and winger Franck Ribery, who are recovering from shoulder and thigh injuries respectively.Germany forward Thomas Mueller is enduring a goal drought with just one goal in 17 league games this term, but Robert Lewandowski has hit 23 goals in all competitions and is relishing the Arsenal showdown.“Everyone is waiting for this game and it’ll be a big challenge for us,” said Lewandowski.“Arsenal have very good players, but we need to concentrate on ourselves and if we play our best football, Arsenal probably won’t have many chances.“We need to score at least once and concede nothing, then it’ll be a good evening for us.”

Visa delay for Senate deputy chairman: Pakistan boycotts UN meeting

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The failure of Pakistans Senate deputy chairman, a prominent Islamist politician, to get a U.S. visa on time for a trip to the United States prompted Pakistan to boycott a U.N.-sponsored meeting on Monday, a parliamentary official said.It was not clear whether the failure of Senator Abdul Ghafoor Haideri to get a visa on time for his trip was related to U.S. President Donald Trumps call for extreme vetting of applicants amid a push to suspend visas from seven other countries.Haideri, a leader of the Islamist Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) party, had been scheduled to lead a delegation to a meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union on Monday and Tuesday at U.N. headquarters in New York. However, when he did not get a U.S. visa on time to travel by the weekend, he canceled his trip and the rest of delegation decided to boycott, Chaudhry Arshad, a director at the office of the Senate chairman, told Reuters.Unless the U.S. provides an explanation for this delay, no Senate delegation will visit the U.S. and no member of Congress or U.S. diplomat will be welcomed in the Senate, Arshad said, referring to Pakistans upper house of parliament.Haideri could not be reached for comment but an official at his partys office said it was awaiting an explanation from U.S. authorities. He declined to be identified.A spokeswoman for the U.S. embassy in Islamabad declined to comment, citing privacy rules.Pakistans Express Tribune newspaper reported on Sunday that Haideri had applied for the visa two weeks before his planned trip. It can take weeks for Pakistanis to get a U.S. visa under normal circumstances.Haideri is known for his opposition to the U.S. war on terror, launched after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States. His party is in a coalition government with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharifs ruling party.Drawing much of its support from Pakistans network of religious schools, called madrassas, the JUI-F is one of Pakistans largest Islamist parties dedicated to imposing Islamic law in Pakistan through elections. The JUI-F openly supports jihad in Indias part of the disputed Kashmir region and a Taliban government in Afghanistan.Last month, in response to a question about the visa policy toward Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, Trump told ABC News:Were going to have extreme vetting in all cases. And I mean extreme. And were not letting people in if we think theres even a little chance of some problem.Trump is considering issuing a new executive order on visas after an appeals court upheld a court ruling last week that temporarily suspended his Jan. 27 executive order banning travel from seven majority-Muslim countries.Pakistan was not on the Jan. 27 list.

Courts likely to probe Trump's intent in issuing travel ban

Posted:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Washington state’s attorney general has promised to uncover what truly motivated President Donald Trumps executive order on immigration, an approach that could prompt a rare public examination of how a US president makes national security decisions. The presidential order imposed a temporary ban on travellers from seven predominantly Muslim countries, but a federal judge has barred enforcement of the order while the court considers a challenge brought by Washington state. On Thursday, the US Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit left the judge’s ruling in place without deciding the ultimate merits of either side’s arguments. In its decision, the 9th Circuit cited a previous case establishing that “circumstantial evidence of intent, including … statements by decision makers, may be considered in evaluating whether a governmental action was motivated by a discriminatory purpose.”The Trump administration has argued that the ban is necessary to prevent potential terrorists from entering the country and is not discriminatory because the text of the order does not mention any particular religion.Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson signalled on Sunday that he will move aggressively to obtain written documents and emails authored by administration officials that might contain evidence the order was unconstitutionally biased against Muslims or Islam. He also said he would also move to depose administration officials.Legal scholars say this could move the court into uncharted waters. The idea of looking at motive has never really been applied to the president, said John Yoo, a former Justice Department lawyer in the George W. Bush administration. It would represent a serious expansion of judicial oversight of what the president and the entire executive branch does, said Yoo, now a professor at the University of California at Berkeley School of Law.Trump has harshly criticized the federal judge in Washington for his decision and a top White House aide on Sunday accused the 9th Circuit of a judicial usurpation of power. The presidents powers here are beyond question, senior policy adviser Stephen Miller told Fox News Sunday.US courts have historically been careful about probing the motives behind laws, in part out of respect for the separation of powers between branches of government. But on questions of racial or religious discrimination, they have sometimes allowed intent to be examined. In 1993, for instance, the Supreme Court found that an ordinance banning animal sacrifice in Hialeah, Florida, though neutral on its face, was actually intended to discriminate against a Santeria church, which holds sacrifice as a sacred rite.Stephen Griffin, a professor of constitutional law at Tulane University, said cases like this make it clear that the court can look beyond the words of Trumps executive order. Motive is relevant, he said. One question in the current case is likely to be which, if any, of Trump’s statements should be admissible in examining the administration’s motives in issuing the order. If youre allowed to use evidence from the campaign, the states case is very strong, said Griffin. In December, 2015, days after a mass attack by an Islamic State sympathizers in San Bernardino, California, Trump called for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our representatives can figure out what is going on. He later said he supported only suspending immigration from areas with a history of terrorism.Stanford University Law School professor Michael McConnell, a former federal appeals judge, said the court should not consider campaign statements, because Trump only swore an oath to uphold the Constitution after he became president. In its complaint, Washington cited an interview the president did on the day the order was signed with the Christian Broadcasting Network, saying he would prioritise Christians in the Middle East for admission as refugees. Legal experts are divided on whether the states lawyers should be allowed to question the presidents advisers – and possibly even the president – in depositions. The White House could potentially claim executive privilege, which protects the president and other officials from subpoena, said Thomas Lee, an expert in constitutional law at Fordham University.Anna-Rose Mathieson a partner with the California Appellate Law Group said that one person who might be more easily deposed would be presidential adviser and former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who told Fox News the president had asked him to put a commission together to figure out how to make a Muslim ban legal.David Pressman, a partner at Boies Schiller Flexner and former assistant secretary of Homeland Security in the Obama administration, said there are important protections in place so that the executive branch can receive national security advice. You dont want a situation in which courts are adjudicating intelligence that is coming to the executive when trying to formulate policy, said Pressman. Though in this case, Pressman said he did not believe the national security argument for the order was clear, opening the door to further questioning. The next steps in the case are not certain. The Trump administration has said it is considering appealing the 9th Circuit ruling to the Supreme Court, and the 9th Circuit itself might decide to rehear the case with a larger panel of judges. The president has also said he might replace the order with “a brand new” one, which could end the current legal action.
