Conte hopes rugby coach Jones talk will benefit Chelsea

Posted:

London (AFP) – Chelsea manager Antonio Conte will hope to take inspiration from England rugby union coach Eddie Jones when his Premier League leaders face Swansea City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.Conte demonstrated his desire to improve his team’s performance when he shared ideas with Jones, who has a perfect record of 15 wins from 15 games since taking charge of England, with his latest success a 21-16 defeat of Wales.“Eddie is a winner and he is transferring that mentality on to the team,” Conte said ahead of facing Chelsea’s own Welsh opponents.“It is important for me to compare my work and experience with another sport to gain inspiration and tactical ideas for the future,” the Italian added. The Blues, into the FA Cup quarter-finals with last weekend’s defeat of Wolverhampton Wanderers, return to Premier League action aiming to consolidate their eight-point lead at the top of the table. With just 13 top-flight games remaining –- and having suffered just one league defeat since September –- the chances of Conte’s side allowing their rivals to close the gap appear remote, despite drawing two of their last three league games.Conte’s success at Stamford Bridge has been in reviving a team that finished 10th last season and the coach insists the foundation for his side’s improvement lay in the Blues back-to-back league defeats by Liverpool and Arsenal in September.“It’s important not to forget totally the two defeats because when you lose the game you can learn a lot. And I think we learnt a lot.“To win, not only one game, not one battle but the whole war it is important to create a good spirit.“To create a team, and to try to exploit every single player, the talent of every single player in the best way you must find right solution, the right system, to create a family spirit, a good spirit.“Then in the negative moments it’s important to have a family. If you have a family, you solve the situation and then can go forward.”– Makelele’s Swansea role –Conte will recall a number of senior players who missed the trip to Wolves, including defenders David Luiz, Gary Cahill and Marcos Alonso.Saturday’s game marks the return of Paul Clement to Stamford Bridge, the Swansea manager having worked as Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant at the west London club.Clement’s recent arrival at Swansea has triggered an upturn in form that has moved the Welsh side four points clear of the relegation zone. But Clement has also credited the contribution of his backroom staff with helping turn things around at the Liberty Stadium, including Claude Makelele. Now Clement wants to keep the former Chelsea midfielder at Swansea beyond the end of the season.“If we keep moving in the direction we’re going there would be no reason to change anything,” he said.“He (Makelele) does not have so much coaching experience, but he has a good feel for players, one-to-one, he has great knowledge of the game having played at such a high level.”Swansea will be without Ki Sung-Yueng (knee), Nathan Dyer (Achilles) and Jefferson Montero (hamstring) but Clement insisted his players should travel with confidence.“When we went to Liverpool and Manchester City, I don’t think people expected much of us,” he said.“But we won one of those games and were unlucky not to get a positive result in the other, and I think both those teams would say we gave them hard games.“I think that in this moment, we will give anyone a difficult game.”

United draw delights Rostov in Europa League last-16

Posted:

Nyon (AFP) – Favourites Manchester United were drawn on Friday to face faraway Russian outfit Rostov, who unlike Jose Mourinho were delighted with the Europa League last-16 tie.Mourinho’s side beat French club Saint-Etienne 4-0 on aggregate in the last 32 and the English club will now travel to Russia on Thursday, March 9 with the second leg in Manchester a week later on March 16.Mourinho said this week he wanted to avoid a Russian club as United face Chelsea in the FA Cup in between.“It’s a bad draw in every aspect,” said Mourinho on Friday. It’s far and comes in a very bad period for us. Difficult because they’re a very difficult team.“They have a very good Champions League campaign, they beat Ajax and Anderlecht in playoffs. And in the group phase, a difficult group with Bayern and Atletico, they managed good results against them.”But the draw was greeted with delight in Rostov.“We reacted with joy on seeing the draw,” Rostov director Ali Uzdenov told R-Sport agency.“The guys are ready to face any opponent, Man United especially,” he said.“These matches will be very special events for everyone in Rostov, not just football fans.”Rostov coach Dmitry Kirichenko said he would prepare his players for a fight.“Man United are probably the strongest possible opponents that we could get,” he said. “It’s great that our fans will be able to see so many super clubs here.“We’ll prepare for the match in the best possible way, to fight at our maximum, to show our character and do our very best.”Italian side AS Roma, also among the competition favourites, drew French club Lyon in what is probably the clash of the round.Lyon beat Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar 7-1 on Thursday and 11-2 on aggregate, but the smiles vanished with the Roma draw.“The draw is what it is,” said Lyon coach Bruno Genesio. “But if you want to win a competition you have to beat the big teams, and Roma is a big team.”There is an all-German pairing as Schalke 04 take on Borussia Moenchengladbach, while two of the three remaining Belgian sides were also cast together as Genk drew Gent.Anderlecht landed Cypriots Apoel as Greek champions Olympiakos play Turkey’s Besiktas.Celta Vigo — La Liga’s sole remaining representative in the second-tier European competition — host another Russian outfit Krasnodar as Dutch giants Ajax travel to FC Copenhagen.Draw:Celta Vigo (ESP) v Krasnodar (RUS)Apoel Nicosia (CYP) v Anderlecht (BEL)Schalke 04 (GER) v Borussia Mönchengladbach (GER)Lyon (FGRA) v Roma (ITA)Rostov (RUS) v Manchester United (ENG)Olympiakos (GRE) v Besiktas (TUR)Gent (BEL) v Genk (BEL)FC Copenhagen (DEN) v Ajax (NED)Note: 1st leg, March 9; 2nd leg, March 16

Yesterday my dream died, says axed Ranieri

Posted:

London (AFP) – Claudio Ranieri said on Friday he had dreamt of staying at Leicester City “for always” before being ruthlessly sacked as manager of the troubled champions.Ranieri was stunningly dismissed by Leicester’s Thai owners on Thursday, less than a year after guiding the 5,000-1 outsiders to the Premier League title.Leicester are languishing one point above the relegation zone with 13 games remaining amid reports of player unrest at Ranieri’s tactical tinkering. But Ranieri’s sacking triggered an outpouring of support for the Italian from his fellow managers and he admitted the decision was a brutal blow.“Yesterday my dream died,” Ranieri said.“After the euphoria of last season and being crowned Premier League champions all I dreamt of was staying with Leicester City, the club I love, for always. Sadly this was not to be.”Ranieri thanked his wife Rosanna, his family and his agents, Steve Kutner and Franco Granello, for “bringing me the opportunity to become a champion”.The former Chelsea boss also added his appreciation for backroom staff members Paolo Benetti and Andrea Azzalin, who departed with him, but he declined to mention Craig Shakespeare, the assistant who was rumoured to have fallen out with him in recent weeks.Ranieri, who arrived at the King Power Stadium in 2015, will go down as the most important figure in Leicester’s previously unheralded history and he paid tribute to everyone who accompanied him on the club’s incredible rags to riches rise.“Mostly I have to thank Leicester City Football Club. The adventure was amazing and will live with me forever,” Ranieri added.“Thank you to all the journalists and the media who came with us and enjoyed reporting on the greatest story in football.“My heartfelt thanks to everybody at the club, all the players, the staff, everybody who was there and was part of what we achieved. But mostly to the supporters. You took me into your hearts from day one and loved me.“I love you too. No one can ever take away what we together have achieved, and I hope you think about it and smile every day the way I always will.“It was a time of wonderfulness and happiness that I will never forget. It’s been a pleasure and an honour to be a champion with all of you.”

Tottenham's Dele Alli sorry for red card shame

Posted:

London (AFP) – Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli has apologised to his team-mates and Gent midfielder Brecht Dejaegere after being sent off for a horror tackle in the Premier League club’s shock Europa League exit.Alli saw red for a studs-up lunge on Dejaegere in the 39th minute at Wembley on Thursday and Tottenham were unable to recover.Christian Eriksen’s opener and an own-goal from Harry Kane meant the score was 1-1 when Alli was given his marching orders by referee Manuel De Sousa.Victor Wanyama’s second-half strike gave Tottenham hope but Jeremy Perbet’s late goal on the break gave Gent a 2-2 draw and 3-2 win on aggregate in the last 32 tie.Alli’s challenge was high and dangerous, spearing his studs just below Dejaegere’s knee, but the Belgian revealed the England international had said sorry.“Dele Alli just said sorry to me and that’s nice from him, he’s a professional,” Dejaegere said.“We’re okay, it’s football. I saw the images and it could have been much worse. I don’t think he meant it because he came to apologise himself.”Dejaegere was able to continue initially but had to be substituted in the 56th minute when the pain in his knee became more acute.“I felt it was a really hard tackle but then in the moment, you turn the button and try to focus on the game,” Dejaegere said.“At half-time I felt pain in my knee and also someone showed me the image and then my heart was thumping for a few seconds.”Alli’s challenge appeared an expression of anger after he had been denied a free-kick moments before. But Toby Alderweireld said the 20-year-old had apologised to his Tottenham colleagues.“Of course he said sorry. He didn’t mean to get sent off,” Alderweireld said.“Two seconds before someone made a foul on him and he reacted to that but he did not want to get a red card. He is young and I know for 100 per cent he didn’t mean (to do it).”

Mourinho happy with Rooneys decision to stay

Posted:

Manchester (AFP) – Jose Mourinho confirmed Wayne Rooney will be in Manchester United’s League Cup Final squad against Southampton after the club’s record goal scorer declared he will remain at Old Trafford for the rest of the season.United manager Mourinho was impressed with the way England forward Rooney handled rumours of a possible lucrative move to the Chinese Super League. And, after revealing that Henrikh Mkhitaryan will miss Sunday’s Wembley showpiece due to an injury suffered at Saint Etienne in midweek, Mourinho opened the door for Rooney to play against Southampton.“Yes,” said Mourinho when asked on Friday if Rooney is in the Wembley squad. “I think he did, in the right moment, in the best moment, he did his declaration, his statement.“I told you at my last press conference that the questions you are asking me were questions for him. Only he could answer the questions and he did it exactly in the right moment.“Your question is the last question about Wayne Rooney and should be the last until the end of the season. He says he stays and helps the team to fight for the trophies.“I said already I will be happy if that’s the decision so yes it’s fine. He is training with the team.“He was not selected for St-Etienne because he was not ready to play, but he was ready to have one more important training session. And now, today, he is involved in the game.”Mourinho also spoke passionately about the extraordinary sacking of Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri, who left the club on Thursday less than a year after leading them to the title.– Beautiful history –Mourinho posted a message of support on his Instagram account and arrived at the press conference wearing the initials ‘CR’ of his sacked colleague on his shirt.“My comment about Claudio is my shirt with his name,” he said. “It is my little homage to somebody that wrote the most beautiful history of the Premier League.“Somebody that probably deserves the Leicester stadium to be named ‘Claudio Ranieri’ – and he is sacked.“So I think Leicester made history two years in a row. One year because they did the most beautiful thing in the Premier League and one of the most beautiful stories in football history.“And now they are also in the highlights with the decision that I think has everyone in football united because it is something very, very difficult to accept.“But I think at the same time it is good for us to realise how football is, and we need to adapt to it.“I thought last season when I was sacked as a champion it was a giant negative thing, now I realise it was peanuts to what happened with Claudio.“My Instagram and shirt were homage. I don’t think he needs more homages because no-one can believe what he did.“If some of the stories I am reading are true or are a little bit true, it’s hard to find words to justify that. As managers we have to be ready to cope with that.”Mourinho confirmed he was referring to reports that Ranieri was dismissed due to player power and rifts in the Leicester dressing room, but the United manager has problems of his own to contend with after the Europa League draw.United must face Russian side FC Rostov in the last 16, a draw which hands them a difficult journey just four days before facing Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-final.“It’s a bad draw in every aspect,” said Mourinho. It’s far and comes in a very bad period for us, difficult because they’re a very difficult team.“They have a very good Champions League campaign, they beat Ajax and Anderlecht in playoffs and in the group phase, a difficult group with Bayern and Atletico, they managed good results against them.”

Barcelona launch major football academy in China

Posted:

Beijing (AFP) – Ronaldinho launched a Barcelona academy for about 1,000 students in China on Friday as the world’s most populous nation pursues its grand ambitions in the world’s most popular sport. The Barcelona and Brazil great and club president Josep Maria Bartomeu met children and toured the site at the Mission Hills golf complex on Hainan island, which will have seven pitches when it opens later this year. The academy, which will also serve as a training centre for China’s national team and top clubs, is one of tens of thousands of facilities expected in the coming years as China strives to become a football superpower.“We know Barcelona FC works very well with kids, with high-level professionals that are coming to work here,” Ronaldinho said. “I believe they will help a lot and Chinese football is going to learn a lot.”The new facility will be the biggest of Barcelona’s 20-plus academies around the world, and the first directly managed by club staff. It is still dwarfed by the Evergrande Football School in Guangdong, which has links with Barcelona’s Spanish rivals Real Madrid and more than 2,000 students, making it the world’s biggest academy. But Mission Hills vice-chairman Tenniel Chu told AFP in November that the Barcelona academy will eventually grow to 30 pitches, alongside an international school with a capacity of 5,000.China, whose national team is wallowing at 86th in the world rankings, plans to have 50,000 academies and football-focused schools by 2025, the education ministry said this week.“Probably it will be the (biggest) project of football in the world,” Bartomeu said, referring to the new academy.“I think China needs… what Mission Hills is doing in Hainan, and for China it’s going to be a new step for the growth in football.“For me, the temperature, the ambience, the people, and mainly the terrain of this island are going to be something unique for… the development of football in China.”Mission Hills already operates the world’s two biggest golf resorts in Guangdong and Hainan, along with a Boris Becker tennis academy.Despite its 1.3 billion population, China punches well below its weight in football, reaching the World Cup only once in its history — in 2002, when the team lost all three group games without scoring a goal. But under President Xi Jinping, a football fan, China has ambitions of hosting and even winning the World Cup, triggering a rush of Chinese investment in foreign clubs, players, coaches and media rights.Alongside the academy in Hainan, Barcelona will also open a 7,000-square-metre (75,000 square feet) ‘Barcelona Experience’ centre, featuring exhibits and merchandise for sale. Some football experts have cast doubt on the efficiency of academies, saying the sport’s key skills are best learned organically.

Combative Trump promises Americans safety and strength

Posted:

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump promised on Friday to keep America safe from foreign terrorists with beefed up borders and a massive military buildup, in a staunchly nationalistic address to conservative supporters. The era of empty talk is over. Its over. Now is the time for action, Trump told battalions of Republicans gathered for an annual meeting outside the US capital.Nobodys going to mess with us, folks. Nobody. It will be one of the greatest military buildups in American history, the president said. Offensive. Defensive. Everything. Bigger and better and stronger than ever before. And hopefully well never have to use it, he added. The hawkish message was lapped up by conservatives gathered in Oxon Hill, where a combative Trump painted immigrants as criminals, and renewed his assault on the fake media. They are the enemy of the people, because they have no sources. They just make em up when there are none, he said. He was met by euphoric chants of USA, USA.Twenty-one-year-old Austin Wellman hailed Trumps drive to bring back patriotic fervor following his election victory last November over Hillary Clinton. It makes us feel like we dont have to hide the pride that comes with being an American, Wellman said.Trumps month-long tenure in the White House has been marked by a political tug-of-war between Republican orthodoxy and those advocating a more radical upheaval of politics and the global order. In his speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference, Trump pulled the rope decisively to the nationalistic far-right.There is no such thing as a global anthem, a global currency, or a global flag, he said. This is the United States of America that Im representing. Americans bleed the same red blood of great, great patriots, he added. With his administration mired in multiple missteps and strong disapproval ratings, Trump went on the offensive. He painted Sweden, Germany and France as blighted by militant violence, as he sought to defend his own controversial crackdown on immigrants. We fully understand that national security begins with border security, he said.Let me state this as clearly as I can: We are going to keep radical Islamic terrorists the hell out of our country, he said, promising to revisit a failed attempt to bar entry to people from seven Muslim-majority countries. We will not be deterred from this course, and in a matter of days, we will be taking brand new action to protect our people and keep America safe.Trump also defended orders issued by his administration for a sweeping crackdown on the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants already living in the country.Though it targets as a priority people convicted or accused of crimes, the move sent shivers through US immigrant communities, most of them from Mexico and Central America, who are seriously threatened with deportation for the first time in decades.Several cases of immigration enforcement have drawn national attention since Trump took office, including that of an undocumented woman with a brain tumour who was reportedly dragged out of a Texas hospital to a detention centre.Trump asked supporters to remember the rationale behind his order. These are bad dudes. Were getting the bad ones out, OK?If you watch these people, its like gee, thats so sad. Were getting bad people out of this country, people that shouldnt be, whether its drugs or murder or other things Basically all Ive done is keep my promise.
