SYDNEY (AFP) - Steve OKeefe gave a superhero performance in Australias stunning three-day first Test win to change the landscape of their series in India, Australias media said Sunday.Left-arm spinner OKeefe, known as SOK, captured the identical figures of six for 35 in both innings to spin Australia to a massive 333-run win over Test crickets top-ranked team on a viciously turning track in Pune on Saturday. It was Australias first Test win in India since 2004 and ended the hosts unbeaten streak of 19 Tests in the opening match of the four-Test series.OKeefe was hailed a hero along with skipper Steve Smiths fighting first century in India and his 10th as Australias captain.Steve OKeefe led Australia to one of its greatest Test victories on Indian soil with a superhero performance that rewrote the record books and humiliated the shellshocked hosts inside three days, the Sun-Herald said.Australia will head to Bangalore for the second Test with genuine belief they can pull off what only a few days ago seemed like mission impossible and win just their second series on these shores since 1969.The newspaper said such was the crushing nature of Australias victory that it has changed the landscape of this series. The Australian newspaper said it was a triumph Indias billion-plus people didnt see coming.History has been made. Australia has won its first game in India in almost 13 years. Steve OKeefe has put his name on an honour board among the very best the game has ever seen and India is in shock, Peter Lalor said.A billion plus people didnt see this coming. A good 20 million plus Australians were of the same mind.Nobody outside the camp gave Steve Smiths men a chance, but they romped it in. The best bit? They beat the Indians at their own game. The Sunday Telegraph said OKeefe shattered 84 years of Test history on the sub-continent to pilot Australia to one of their most famous victories.Written off as the worst Australian team to ever tour crickets most imposing fortress, a great sporting upset is now firmly on the cards, it said.OKeefes extraordinary match haul of 12-70 now stands alone as the best individual figures by an overseas spinner ever in the sub-continent since the first match India played way back in 1933.Former Australia Test fast bowler Mitchell Johnson tweeted: And the coach of India says Steve OKeefe is Steady. Well done Steady OKeefe, keep it up.

Obama-era veteran picked to lead Democratic Party

Posted:

WASHINGTON, Feb 26, 2017 (AFP) - Democrats chose Tom Perez, a former Barack Obama cabinet member, as their new leader Saturday, tapping an establishment candidate to lead the fight against US President Donald Trump and claw back the ground lost to Republicans in Congress. With opposition Democrats preparing for crucial 2018 midterm elections and the nations next presidential race on the distant 2020 horizon, nothing less than the future of the party was seen as being at stake.Perez, a former secretary of labor under Obama and the partys first Hispanic-American leader, named as his deputy the contests runner-up Keith Ellison -- a progressive representative who has left open the prospect of pushing to impeach Trump.Someday, theyre going to study this era in American history... and ask the question, of all of us, where were you in 2017 when we had the worst president in the history of the United States? the 55-year-old Perez said. And we will all be able to say, the united Democratic party led the resistance, ensured this president was a one-term president and elected Democrats across this country.Ellison, an 53-year-old African American who is the first Muslim elected to the US Congress, warned that we dont have the luxury to walk out of this room divided. The fight over who would chair the Democratic National Committee (DNC) appeared at times to be a proxy battle between the supporters of two 2016 also-rans: defeated Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and her liberal primary rival Bernie Sanders.Perez, who won 235 votes against 200 for Ellison, was seen as the establishment pick.Unlike in other democracies, the leaders of the United States two main political parties wield relatively little influence on policy, with leading Congressional Democrats and Republicans holding far more clout. But the backstage role is taking on greater significance following Clintons surprise defeat, with many looking to the chair to take a strong stand in the media and elsewhere fighting Trump.- Perez will unite us -=========================Perez will succeed the DNCs interim chair Donna Brazile, who took over after Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz was forced from the position last summer when leaked emails showed that members of the organization, which pledges neutrality in presidential primaries, favored Clinton over Sanders.A third DNC candidate, South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg -- a gay, 35-year-old Rhodes Scholar and military veteran -- dropped out of the race before the vote, which was held in Atlanta, Georgia.Liberal Democrats were quick to pounce on Perez, with progressive group Democracy for America criticizing the incredibly disappointing result.Choosing Perez is another missed opportunity for a Democratic Party desperately trying to regain relevance and proves, once again, how out of touch party insiders are with the grassroots movement currently in the streets, on the phone and at town halls nationwide, said the groups chair Jim Dean, an early supporter of Ellison in the race. But Obama, who cast himself in the 2008 elections as the countrys great uniter, called for mending rifts. What unites our party is a belief in opportunity -- the idea that however you started out, whatever you look like, or whomever you love, America is the place where you can make it if you try, he said.I know that Tom Perez will unite us under that banner of opportunity, and lay the groundwork for a new generation of Democratic leadership for this big, bold, inclusive, dynamic America we love so much.- Crisis of confidence -========================Republicans claimed that Perezs victory is an indication of just how much the Democrats have lost touch with the American people. After the vote, Trump offered what appeared to be a tongue-in-cheek congratulations to Perez.I could not be happier for him, or for the Republican Party the president wrote on Twitter.Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a statement that by selecting a DC insider, Democrats only create deeper divisions within their own party by pushing a far left agenda that rejects a majority of their base outside Washington.During a debate with several DNC candidates late Wednesday, Perez said Democrats needed to get back to basics by making house calls in all 50 states and establishing a year-round organizing presence to remind American workers that the Democratic Party represents their values and interests. When we lead with our message, our message of economic opportunity, thats how we win, he said.Perez also warned that Democrats must reform their partys presidential primary system, which he said has created a crisis of confidence because of its lack of transparency. He and other candidates, well aware that Democrats lost ground to Republicans in state house and governor races, stressed the need to seed the party with new, young talent.

No point in dwelling on poor NZ performance - Hesson

Posted:

NEW ZEALAND (REUTERS) - All Blacks coach Steve Hansen once quipped that it was probably better to flush the dunny (toilet) and move on after a poor performance against Italy in 2009 and his cricket counterpart Mike Hesson expressed similar thoughts on Sunday.Hessons team were comprehensively outplayed by South Africa in the third one-day international at Wellington Regional Stadium on Saturday as they were bundled out for 112 and lost the match by 159 runs. The victory gave the Proteas a 2-1 lead in the five-match series and Hessons side face a must-win game in Hamilton on Saturday. We have to move on pretty quick. We cant let a performance like that affect how we prepare for the next one, Hesson told reporters on Sunday. South Africa ... were excellent. They challenged us and we didnt respond.Hesson at least has the services of Martin Guptill at Seddon Park after the opening batsman missed the first three games with a hamstring injury.Guptills return creates something of a selection conundrum for Hesson, with Tom Latham likely to relinquish the gloves to specialist wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi for the rest of the series.Even though he has proved more than capable behind the stumps, Latham has scores of 0, 2, 0, 0, 7 and 4 in his past six ODIs and Guptill is likely to open with Dean Brownlie in Hamilton.Theres no doubt Tom has struggled the last little while, Hesson said. Hes come off a great series in India where he was our best player and he hasnt quite reached those heights yet.

Pleased Smith warns Australia against possible India backlash

Posted:

PUNE (REUTERS) - Captain Steve Smith described Australias thumping win against India as one of his best victories but warned his team mates of a possible backlash from the smarting hosts.Theyre an amazing team particularly in their own backyard. Theyre going to come back hard and weve got to be ready for it, Smith told reporters after Australias 333-run victory in the first test on Saturday. The odds were heavily stacked against the visiting side when they arrived in India, after they had lost their last nine tests in Asia and suffered a 4-0 whitewash on their 2013 tour to the country.India, the worlds top-ranked side, were unbeaten in their previous 19 tests with their last loss at home coming in 2012 against England in Kolkata, prompting the Australian captain to call his side underdogs.Smiths men, however, thrashed India inside three days to go 1-0 up in the four-match series. Its right up there. Coming to India, we havent won a game here in 4,502 days. Ive been told those facts, Smith said. So it has been an incredibly long time. The guys have been excited by the opportunity to come and play here. We know its a great challenge and this game the boys were up to the challenge. The pressure was on us. Everyone wrote us off and expected India to win four-nil. That cant happen any more.On a surface offering prodigious turn for the spinners, left-armer Steve OKeefe picked up six wickets for 35 in both innings to help Australia scythe through Indias batting line-up.Smith, who hit his 18th test hundred and his first in India in the second innings, congratulated his team mates for their efforts.Terrific job over the last three days, the 27-year-old said. But its only one game. Its a four-match series and wed like to win the series, as you like to do with every series. For us its about taking it one day at a time and continuing to worry about our processes. If we do that like we did in this game, hopefully the result will take care of itself.

Cricket-Batsmen lacked application, says India captain Kohli

Posted:

PUNE (REUTERS) - Indias abject first-innings batting against Australia cost them the opening test in the four-match series, home captain Virat Kohli said after his sides 333-run defeat on Saturday.I think the way we batted in the first innings, I think we put ourselves under a lot of pressure to be honest, Kohli told reporters.World number one side India were previously unbeaten in 19 tests and few would have fancied a win for Australia, who had lost their last nine tests in Asia. The hosts batsmen capitulated twice in the match, however, getting shot out for 105 in the first innings and 107 in the second.Conceding a 160-run lead on that kind of wicket is criminal actually, Kohli said.If we were close enough to their first innings total, the bowlers mindset would be different in the second innings.India conceded a lead of 155 against Australia, who made 260 in their first innings after captain Steve Smith won the toss and opted to bat.It meant the hosts were always playing catch-up in the game and Kohli said it was very difficult to pull things back.Indias batsmen appeared clueless against the left-arm spin of Steve OKeefe, who picked up six wickets for 35 in each innings.Kohli refused to blame the spin-friendly wicket and said it was application which was missing from his batsmen.I would say our application in this game was very bad. We couldnt build any partnerships, I think that was our worst point, said the 28-year-old.Thats one area which we worked on in the past few months with pride and executed it as well.Kohli urged his team mates to remain calm. Its fine. Its just another international game, its no big deal, Kohli said when asked about the mood in the Indian dressing room. We take failures and losses as an opportunity to learn.I wouldnt think too much about this test. If after 18 or 19 tests, we play one bad game, you have to accept that its a part of international cricket.I dont know if people were thinking that we couldnt lose at all but in our mind there was no such thing. If we dont play good cricket, then any team can beat us.

Bayern destroy Hamburg 8-0 with Lewandowski hat-trick

Posted:

MUNICH (REUTERS) - Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick as the Bundesliga leaders mercilessly obliterated Hamburg SV 8-0 on Saturday as coach Carlo Ancelotti celebrated his 1,000th game as manager. The win kept Bayern five points clear at the top as they again inflicted on their opponents their heaviest league defeat. The Pole, who has netted 19 times in the Bundesliga this season, struck twice in the first half and slotted in his third goal in the 54th minute after Arturo Vidal had put the hosts ahead in the 17th.Strugglers Hamburg had been confident they would not be the punch bags of past matches between the sides, having also lost 8-0 in Munich two years ago, and they had been unbeaten in their last three games. But they looked shell-shocked as they conceded another goal by David Alaba in the 56th and substitute Kingsley Coman scored twice more within five minutes a little later.Arjen Robben struck on the break as Hamburg again capitulated to the Bundesliga champions and current leaders.A perfect day, a perfect game, said Ancelotti. The team played an outstanding game and I could not be happier.I told my players before the game that I wanted a good match for my anniversary. I never thought it would be that good. I hope we show the same attitude in our next game.Bayern never gave Hamburg a chance, making amends for their last-gasp 1-1 draw at Hertha Berlin last week. They had 75 percent possession in the first half alone and could have added to their tally with Lewandowski also hitting the woodwork.I think we did not win a single one-on-one throughout the entire first half, Hamburg keeper Rene Adler said. Its just intolerable.Second-placed RB Leipzig stayed five points off the pace after beating Cologne 3-1 to climb up to 48 points.Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ended his goal drought after 471 minutes to score twice as Borussia Dortmund tightened their hold on third place with a 3-0 victory at Freiburg.

Vardy denies role in Ranieri sacking leftright 2/2leftright

LEICESTER (REUTERS) - Leicester City forward Jamie Vardy has denied he was involved in the sacking of manager Claudio Ranieri nine months after the Italian led his team to the Premier League title. After guiding Leicester to one of the most unlikely title victories last year, Ranieri was fired on Thursday with the Foxes mired in a relegation battle. They are now 18th in the table, two points above bottom side Sunderland. There is speculation I was involved in his dismissal and this completely untrue, unfounded and is extremely hurtful Vardy wrote in an Instagram post on Saturday alongside a photo of Ranieri. The only thing we are guilty of as a team is under-achieving which we all acknowledge both in the dressing-room and publicly and will do our best to rectify, he added.Vardy scored 24 Premier League goals last season to spearhead Leicesters extraordinary triumph after starting the campaign at odds of 5,000-1 to win Englands top-flight title for the first time in their history.Claudio has and always will have my complete respect What we achieved together and as a team was the impossible He believed in me when many didnt and for that I owe him my eternal gratitude, Vardy said.I wish Claudio the very very best in whatever the future holds for him. Thank You Claudio for everything.Vardys post came after goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel also denied reports that players led a revolt against the 65-year-old Ranieri who said goodbye to the Leicester squad on Saturday morning.Theres absolutely no truth in that whatsoever, The Dane told the BBC. We are players, we can only affect on the pitch and we havent done that.Leicester are owned by Thai businessman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha who is the club chairman. What I can say is our owners are very hands on. They are in and around the club. Theyve been here all the time, they come to practically every game and they speak to all the players regularly, Schmeichel said.

Chelsea surge 11 points clear, Leicester into bottom three

Posted:

REUTERS (LONDON) - Chelseas processional march towards the Premier League title continued at Swansea Citys expense on Saturday as reigning champions Leicester City dropped into the bottom three.Antonio Contes side were not firing on all cylinders against a resolute Swansea side managed by their former assistant coach Paul Clement but second-half goals by Pedro and Diego Costa made sure of a 3-1 victory. They are 11 points ahead of Manchester City who have 13 games left and while Italian Conte is too cagey to start preparing the Prosecco yet, only a monumental loss of form looks like denying him the title in his first season in charge.Tottenham Hotspur, the only other top-four side in league action this weekend, could trim Chelseas lead to 10 points if they win at home to Stoke City on Sunday. Its important to continue this way. We need 29 points to be sure of winning the league, Conte told reporters.Chelseas victory made it mathematically impossible for Leicester to catch them as they are 42 points behind the leaders going into their home clash with Liverpool on Monday - their first fixture since the sacking of manager Claudio Ranieri.Leicester will start that game third-bottom after Crystal Palaces 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough at Selhurst Park on Saturday took them out of the relegation zone.Patrick van Aanholts 34th-minute goal was enough to lift Palace to 17th place with 22 points, one ahead of Leicester and Hull City, who drew 1-1 at home with Burnley. The three points are important as it puts us in amongst the pack, out of the bottom three and a bit closer to Bournemouth, Palace manager Sam Allardyce said.Boro also have 22 points but are sliding towards the drop zone after nine league games without a win.Bournemouth, too, are being sucked into the relegation battle after a 2-1 defeat at West Bromwich Albion despite taking a fourth-minute lead through Josh Kings penalty. Craig Dawson and Gareth McAuley replied for West Brom, who are eighth.In-form Everton continue to harbour hopes of catching the top four and beat bottom club Sunderland 2-0 to move within six points of fourth-placed Arsenal.Romelu Lukaku made the points safe for Everton with 10 minutes remaining, taking his tally for the season to 17, level at the top of the scoring charts with Arsenals Alexis Sanchez.Sunderlands fourth defeat in six left them on 19 points. There is a gap between us and the teams above us but there are still 12 games to go, Everton manager Ronald Koeman said. You need to continue and get the momentum.
