Leicester City fairytale lurches into nightmare

Posted:

London (AFP) – The urgent tone in Kasper Schmeichel’s voice said everything about the fate that has befallen Leicester City, fairytale Premier League champions become shock relegation candidates.“We’re the reigning champions and quite frankly it’s been terrible. It’s been embarrassing,” the Danish goalkeeper told a television reporter after Leicester’s 3-0 defeat at home to Manchester United on Sunday.“It’s time for every single one of us, right from the top to the bottom of this club, to stand up and be counted because if we don’t, we’re going to end up getting relegated.”A year on from a stunning 3-1 win at Manchester City that sent them five points clear at the league summit, the loss to United left Claudio Ranieri’s men a solitary point above the relegation zone.Just nine months after the dizzy climax to their 5,000-1 title triumph, Leicester face the prospect of becoming England’s first defending champions to be relegated since Manchester City in 1938.Beaten only three times last season, they have lost 13 times already this term — losing their last four league games without scoring a goal — and are still to win a single game away from home.“Last season was a freak, so this is what you’d expect from Leicester: fighting relegation,” said former Liverpool defender turned Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher.“They have got to do something before the end of the season because one of the great sporting stories of all-time could become a story for all the wrong reasons.”Leicester’s woes are embodied by the dismal form of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez, the rough-cut attacking stars whose goals and assists catapulted the Foxes to the title last May.Leicester’s top scorer in 2015-16 with 24 goals, Vardy has found the net only five times since the start of the campaign.Mahrez won a glut of individual awards after scoring 17 goals and supplying 11 assists last term, but the Algeria winger has scored only three times and created just two goals since the start of the season.– Tactical tinkering –One-man midfield N’Golo Kante, Leicester’s other stand-out player last season, was the only departure during the close season and the club have failed to plug the hole created by his move to current leaders Chelsea.“(Robert) Huth and (Wes) Morgan without Kante in front of them are like Huth and Morgan,” Leicester old boy Gary Lineker tweeted sardonically as United’s forwards gave Leicester’s centre-backs the runaround on Sunday.Injury has hampered Nampalys Mendy since he signed from Nice and with Daniel Amartey an unconvincing stop-gap, Leicester splashed out £15 million ($18.7 million, 17.4 million euros) to sign Wilfred Ndidi last month.Leicester lost head of recruitment Steve Walsh to Everton after last season’s triumph and their transfer activity since has been patchy.Islam Slimani, a club-record £30 million acquisition from Sporting Lisbon, has been a useful addition, his six goals to date including winners against Porto and West Ham United. But Ahmed Musa has not convinced, Mendy has barely played, Ron-Robert Zieler has looked a less than capable deputy for Schmeichel and Luis Hernandez lasted just half a season before being sold to Malaga.Ranieri’s tactical tinkering has also come under the spotlight.Leicester stuck with a tried and tested 4-4-2 system throughout last season, but the Italian’s attempts to broaden his players’ horizons this term have produced some confused performances.Reports emerged last week that Ranieri is facing squad unrest over his tactics and selection decisions and he is now the British bookmakers’ favourite to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job.Leicester face a potentially defining run of fixtures, with Wednesday’s FA Cup replay at home to east Midlands rivals Derby County followed by a trip to fellow strugglers Swansea City. They will then visit Sevilla for the club’s first ever Champions League knockout game, a reminder of glories past that are rapidly retreating into memory.

Guardiola surprised by Jesuss Manchester City impact

Posted:

Manchester (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola admits even he is surprised by the stunning start Brazil forward Gabriel Jesus has made to his career in English football. The 19-year-old scored twice on his full home debut as City recorded a 2-1 victory over Swansea City on Sunday, meaning the youngster has scored three goals on his first two starts in the Premier League. After arriving in England at the start of last month, Jesus is emerging as one of the most exciting prospects to land in the English top flight for some time.“Yes, I’m surprised,” said Guardiola, whose side climbed to third place in the table, 10 points behind leaders Chelsea.“When he came here after he finished the season and won the (Brazilian) championship with Palmeiras, we spoke.“The last two or three years he never had a break because Brazil played a lot of games. I said, ‘Take your time, come back when you feel you’re ready.’“But he’s 19 years old, Brazilian guys are physically strong and he only needed a few training sessions to be ready.“The guy told me he is never tired, always healthy and recovers quickly. We need to protect him, but everybody is surprised at his level.”Jesus opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a close-range volley and gave City victory in stoppage time after Gylfi Sigurdsson had levelled with nine minutes to play.“In the box, he is something special with the ball,” Guardiola said.“It is clear how his first touch is good. With his second, third, he needs to improve, but without the ball he is involved.“He is so intelligent, knows when to put pressure on the central defenders.“Some guys need a lot of time to settle, to know the league, the team-mates and others (settle) immediately, and that guy arrives like this.”– Clement unhappy –Jesus revealed at the weekend that a personal phone-call from Guardiola helped make up his mind to join City in a £27 million ($33.6 million, 31.3 million euros) move that was completed last month.“When we buy a player, we expect the best for our decisions,” Guardiola told journalists at the Etihad Stadium.“We take a lot of decisions every five minutes. We take and you judge, but always judge after, not judge before.“Sometimes we are right and sometimes not. We are so delighted because most of the big important clubs in Europe wanted him and he decided to come here.“We expect the best because he is a striker for Brazil and it is not easy to play for the Brazil national team.“Suddenly he arrives and you have to play immediately. Eight minutes against Tottenham and you think, ‘Wow.’ I think he is hungry and has desire and shows so many good things.”Jesus secured three badly needed points for City, although it appeared that his opening goal would only be worth a point after Sigurdsson netted an 81st-minute equaliser for Swansea. But halfway through four minutes of injury time, Jesus struck again, leaving Guardiola with the tough decision on exactly how and when he will be able to rest the in-form striker.“We will see,” he said. “There are a lot of games. Now he deserves to be in the team, but we will see what happens in the next games because there are many.”Swansea manager Paul Clement, having seen his side undone so late in the game, was unhappy with the free-kick that led to City’s winning goal.“My opinion was it wasn’t a foul,” he said. “(Luciano) Narsingh tried to evade the challenge of (Aleksandar) Kolarov and the linesman gave the decision.“Then the restart was 10 metres deeper than where the free-kick was, in a more central position and the ball was rolling. Those were things the ref was picking up on all game.”

Manchester Uniteds Mourinho taunts Chelsea in style wars

Posted:

Leicester (AFP) – Jose Mourinho took a swipe at his old club Chelsea as the Manchester United boss accused the Premier League leaders of lacking style.Mourinho’s side cruised to a 3-0 victory at Leicester on Sunday and he was quick to highlight the difference between the dominant United display and what he perceives as the more prosaic efforts of Antonio Conte’s men.Frustrated by criticism of the cautious nature of his teams when he was in charge at Chelsea, Mourinho made it clear that he is unimpressed the way the Blues, currently nine points clear at the top, and also Tottenham and Liverpool, have been praised despite employing safety-first philosophies.“My team is playing very well but for many years in my career, especially in this country, when my teams were ruthless and phenomenal defensively I listened week after week to people saying that was not enough, despite winning the title three times,” Mourinho said.“This season it looks that being strong defensively and good on the counter attack is art. That is a big change in England.“We are Manchester United, we want to play attacking football. This is the way the fans want us to play.“But I don’t want to be a manager of a team that doesn’t win matches. We have to score goals. Today we did and that made the difference. Today was very important.”Mourinho’s claims seemed a little harsh, but he was in typically mischievous mood and even referenced his demise as Chelsea boss last season, which came following a defeat at Leicester.“The last time I was in this chair I was sacked a day later,” he said with a smirk before bringing an end to his post-match press conference at the King Power Stadium.Mourinho’s buoyant outlook was a contrast to his sulky demeanour following last week’s draw against Hull and the key to his mood swing was Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the United midfielder who tormented Leicester with his subtle passing and clever movement.– Emotional –Mkhitaryan scored United’s opener and set up the third for Juan Mata after Zlatan Ibrahimovic had doubled the visitors’ lead.Mourinho acknowledged the first goal had been crucial as it boosted his team’s belief and shattered Leicester’s already fragile morale.“We missed the first big chance but scored the next one. That is the story of the game,” he said.“We didn’t play better than in many other matches. We were solid, but we scored goals.“It makes all the difference. In the second half you are in emotional and tactical control.“You kill the emotion of the opponent and the whole game looks different.”Having left Mkhitaryan out at the start of the season, Mourinho is now convinced the Armenian has adapted to the Premier League.“If a player isn’t playing sometimes it can seem the manager is disturbing them, but that is not true,” he said.“Sometimes the best way to protect the player is not to play him. Henrikh is one of these cases, you see the magic things he does.”Meanwhile, Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri insists he still has the backing of his players after their fourth successive defeat left them one point above the relegation zone.Reports have suggested the Italian has lost some support among the troubled champions, but he is adamant they are together and can still avoid crashing out of the league a year after their shock title triumph.“Everybody is frustrated. Of course we aren’t happy, we are very sad,” he said.“I have said if the players don’t want me they can go to the owner, but they have not.“We are together, solid like last season but without the results. That is the hard thing.“We will fight until the end. Leicester is a club used to fighting. I’m confident about this.”

Hamsik chases Maradona record as Real date looms

Posted:

Rome (AFP) – Marek Hamsik says he remains in awe of Argentina legend Diego Maradona but the Slovakia midfielder won’t hold back as the former Napoli hero’s 115-goal club record comes into sight.Hamsik and Dries Mertens struck memorable hat-tricks in a 7-1 rout at Bologna on Saturday as Napoli boosted their hopes of a first title since Maradona inspired the southerners to the second of their two titles in 1990.The Slovakian international’s first Serie A hat-trick took his Napoli tally to 111 goals in nine seasons, only four short of the record Maradona set during a successful but controversial spell in 1984-2001.The big win, with Mertens grabbing his third hat-trick of the season, left Napoli six points shy of leaders Juventus after the Turin giants’ 1-0 win over Inter Milan. But Napoli are up to second and morale is high a week before the Italians face Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.Maradona’s name remains inextricably linked to Napoli but Hamsik will not let sentiment get in the way as he eyes the great Argentine’s 25-year-old record.“It was my first hat-trick in Serie A and I’m delighted,” Hamsik, who sports a mohican style haircut and numerous body tattoos, said.“Maradona is unique, there are no players like him, but I want to overtake his record. I could target it this year but if not I will target it in the future.”With nine goals in 23 appearances — seven less than Serie A’s surprising new leading scorer Mertens — and 15 games remaining in the league Hamsik should have time to finish his season on a personal high. But for the 29-year-old Napoli’s title push takes priority: “It was crucial for us to win, especially after our (1-1) slip-up at Palermo last week.“We wanted to score as many goals as possible. We started really well, in six minutes we’d already made the difference.”Napoli are the most prolific scorers in Serie A, banging in 55 goals in 23 gamesAnd coach Maurizio Sarri hasn’t even welcomed Arkadiusz Milik back yet.The Polish striker hit four league goals in a handful of opening league games before succumbing to a cruciate knee ligament injury while on international duty last October. He is being primed to return in time for the daunting trip to Real next week.“What a game I can’t wait to play against Genoa,” Milik wrote on Facebook.Napoli are now unbeaten in 12 consecutive Serie A games and 17 matches in all competitions. But for Naples-born former Italy defender Fabio Cannavaro, who played for Napoli at the start of his career before spending three seasons with Real in 2006-2009, they will soon face the acid test.“Napoli’s visit to the Bernabeu will be a test of their maturity,” Cannavaro told La Gazzetta dello Sport.“No one can question Real’s international pedigree but it will be interesting to see how Napoli’s game stands up.”

Atletico will be under pressure against Barca, says Enrique

Posted:

Barcelona (AFP) – The pressure is on Atletico Madrid to score goals in their Spanish Cup semi-final second leg against Barcelona, the Catalans’ coach Luis Enrique said on Monday.Barca edged last week’s first leg at the Vicente Calderon in Madrid 2-1 meaning Atletico need to score at least twice, due to the away goals rule, to stand any chance of progressing to the final.“The match situation is that one team has a clear advantage, which is us, while the other is obliged to score two goals,” said Enrique.“It will be a match which forces Atletico Madrid to show more.”The visitors to the Camp Nou on Tuesday have enjoyed much success in that fabled stadium in recent seasons, but Enrique said that was playing a style in which they “camped in their own half” whereas now they will be forced to “press high up the pitch”.Enrique is hoping to recover injured midfield pair Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta for the game.Atletico coach Diego Simeone said his team will “play with the same intensity that we’ve shown in the best moments of this season”.The Argentine admitted it will be “difficult” to progress but added: “We’re confident and we know how we want to approach the match. We’ll give our all.”The winners will face either Celta Vigo or Alaves in the final. Those two drew their first leg 0-0 and meet on Wednesday in the return.
