Smith rejects India whitewash forecast

Posted:

PUNE (AFP) - Steve Smith dismissed predictions that Australia face another series whitewash against India. Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly and veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh have both forecast a clean sweep for the hosts when the arch rivals begin their four-Test series on Thursday in Pune. India, who are on a record-breaking 19-match unbeaten run, toppled Australia from the top of the Test rankings back in August when Smiths side were beaten 3-0 in Sri Lanka. But speaking to reporters on the eve of the first Test, Australia skipper Smith said Im confident in the squad weve got here to compete against India, he said. India have played some very good cricket off late, particularly at home, so were under no illusions there, its going to be tough. But weve got the squad here that can compete in these conditions.

Zampa spins Australia to victory to avoid series sweep

Posted:

ADELAIDE (AFP) - Leg-spinner Adam Zampa claimed three wickets to bowl Australia to victory and avoid a Twenty20 series wipeout against Sri Lanka in Adelaide on Wednesday. Man-of-the-match Zampa, who was left out of the previous match as the Sri Lankans won to clinch the three-match series, captured three for 25 at a crucial stage as Australia went on to win by 41 runs. “It is always nice to bowl the middle overs and it is very easy when you have a start like that,” Zampa said. “Sri Lanka have very fearless players, sometimes it can be tough to bowl at them.” Openers Aaron Finch and Michael Klinger hit half-centuries as the Australians, with their leading stars in India for this week’s Test series, set Sri Lanka 188 runs to win. But the Sri Lankans could not reproduce another of their blazing late innings comebacks where they won the first two T20 games off the last ball. “I thought we played some fantastic cricket tonight. A complete performance like this makes the last match even more heart-breaking,” skipper Finch said. “When you have Klinger at the other end, he lets you play your shots. We have been guilty of not converting starts. Today we had two fifties and Dunk and Head chipping in.”Sri Lanka’s chase was given early impetus by Dilshan Munaweera, who smacked 37 from 25 balls, but from 41 without loss in the fourth over the tourists lost traction and slid to 76 for four in the 10th over. Zampa claimed the vital wicket of man of the series Asela Gunaratne, leg before wicket for four in the 10th over and the tourists were unable to arouse another of their sensational finishes to beat Australia’s total. Gunaratne slammed a pulse-racing 84 to power Sri Lanka to a last-ball victory against Australia on Sunday after clubbing 52 off 37 balls in the opening win in Melbourne. “Beating Australia in home conditions is a tough thing to do. The guys did a good job,” skipper Upul Tharanga said. “The innings Asela Gunaratne played in the second game in Geelong was amazing.”James Faulkner also took three wickets with his clever changes of pace to maintain Australia’s advantage. It was Sri Lanka’s first defeat in six T20 internationals in Australia. Skipper Finch was dropped by Munaweera before he had scored on the fifth ball of the Australian innings and went on to cash in with 53 off 32 balls with three sixes and five fours. Klinger proved the mainstay of the innings with 62 from 43 deliveries with six fours and a six. The opening pair put on 79 runs for the first wicket. Ben Dunk (28 from 21 balls) and Travis Head (30 from 16) contributed useful knocks to get to 179 for two before a late flurry of wickets cost Australia a chance to top a 200 total. Sri Lanka claimed four wickets for eight off the final 11 deliveries with Lasith Malinga taking two for 35 and Chamara Kapugedera taking three catches in the deep.

Mkhitaryan secures United progress despite injury

Posted:

Saint-Étienne (AFP) – Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored but was then forced off with a hamstring injury as Manchester United cruised into the Europa League last 16 with a 1-0 win at St Etienne on Wednesday. That completed a 4-0 aggregate victory in the last 32 tie, although United finished the match with 10 men after Eric Bailly was dismissed for two yellow cards in quick succession.Manager Jose Mourinho will face an anxious wait ahead of Sunday’s English League Cup final against Southampton at Wembley to see if his Armenian playmaker is fit.Mkhitaryan has been involved in five goals — scoring three and creating two — in his last six games and would have been a likely starter at Wembley.Despite leading 3-0 from the first leg at Old Trafford last week, Mourinho showed how highly he values success in this competition — which offers a route into next season’s Champions League to the winners — by picking a strong starting line-up.Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba were restored to the starting line-up after making a decisive contribution off the bench against Blackburn in the FA Cup on Sunday — the Frenchman teeing up the Swede to score the winning goal. There was none of the early match defensive jitters from United, and centre-back Bailly in particular, that had brought a rebuke from Mourinho following the first leg in which he accused his players of not having been focussed enough. And it took just 16 minutes for United to extinguish any fanciful hopes the hosts might have harboured of mounting a memorable comeback — when the opening goal came, it was almost too easy.Juan Mata used Daley Blind as a decoy to make space for himself down the left and his pinpoint cross was met by Mkhitaryan, dissecting the home centre-halves, to flick past the helpless Stephane Ruffier in the home goal.By then the visitors had already established control of the ball in midfield and looked comfortable spraying it around patiently.Mourinho was forced into an early change as Mkhitaryan seemed to tweak his hamstring and was replaced by Marcus Rashford on 25 minutes.– Roared on –United looked by far the more dangerous of the two sides but St Etienne did sound a warning from a set-piece seven minutes from the break as Jordan Veretout picked out Loic Perrin, only for the captain to head straight at Sergio Romero, celebrating his 30th birthday. It was, at least, the Ligue 1 side’s first effort on target over the two legs.Roared on by a passionate home crowd at the Stade Geoffroy Guichard, St Etienne played with energy at the start of the second half but it was United who should have doubled their lead as Marouane Fellaini fired into the side-netting when well placed.Things got interesting just after the hour mark as Bailly was sent-off for picking up two bookings in three minutes — the second when he clearly won the ball in a challenge with Romain Hamouma — much to Mourinho’s obvious annoyance.Mourinho had to quickly rejig, with centre-back Marcus Rojo replacing Mata and United shutting up shop.St Etienne were reduced to Florentin Pogba, Paul’s brother, trying his luck with a volley from 30 yards that sailed wide, summing up their impotency in front of goal over the two legs.Rashford’s pace was causing St Etienne problems and he clipped a ball over the top from Blind across the face of goal.Tougher nights in Europe than this await United, but at least it gave them a chance to quickly turn their attention to Southampton.

Football: Adam Lallana extends Liverpool deal

Posted:

London (AFP) – England midfielder Adam Lallana has signed a contract extension with Liverpool, the Premier League club said on Wednesday.Although Liverpool did not make public the length of Lallana’s new contract, but British media reports said he had signed a new three-year deal with the option of an extra 12 months. The 28-year-old Lallana, who arrived at Anfield from Southampton in 2014, told Liverpool’s website: “I’m very proud and feel quite humbled by the show of faith from the club and the manager (Jurgen Klopp) in particular.“Signing for a club like Liverpool is obviously a big thing — but to re-sign shows you’ve obviously contributed enough that the people who make the decisions want you to stay longer.“This is a really good place to be at the moment and, for a player who wants to be part of something special, I can’t think of a better club to commit your future to.”Lallana has scored 20 goals in 117 Liverpool appearances to date and follows Philippe Coutinho, who in January signed a new contract to become the club’s highest-paid player, in committing his long-term future to Liverpool.“We have a brilliant squad of players who are only going to get better the longer we are together,” Lallana added.

Sevilla beat Leicester 2-1 in Champions League

Posted:

Seville (Spain) (AFP) – Jamie Vardy’s first Champions League goal gave Leicester City a lifeline in their last 16 tie despite going down 2-1 to Sevilla in Wednesday’s first leg.Goals from Pablo Sarabia and Joaquin Correa had given Sevilla a deserved 2-0 lead, whilst Correa also saw a penalty saved by the inspired Kasper Schmeichel. However, despite Sevilla’s dominance, Schmeichel’s heroics and Vardy’s strike means the English champions are well in the tie ahead of the second leg at home on March 14.The two sides couldn’t be in more contrasting form with Sevilla just three points off the top of La Liga, whilst Leicester face a relegation battle just a year after defying all the odds to win the Premier League.Sevilla’s first big chance arrived 14 minutes in when Correa showed more fight and fleetness of foot than the Leicester defence inside the area and was chopped down by visiting captain Wes Morgan.Correa won a battle with his teammates to take the spot-kick, but was less successful with a tame effort that Schmeichel easily collected. The Dane then showed fine reflexes to get down low to his left to parry Sergio Escudero’s low driven effort from the edge of the box.Sevilla finally made their superiority count 24 minutes in when Escudero’s cross from the left was met with a powerful header from his opposite wing-back Sarabia that nestled in the far corner for his ninth goal of the season. The one way traffic continued as Stefan Jovetic’s looping long-range effort was turned over by Schmeichel before the ‘keeper produced another stunning stop to once again deny Correa.Leicester didn’t have a single effort on goal in the first-half, but did at least test Sergio Rico early in the second period, albeit with a routine save when he collected Wilfred Ndidi’s volley from range.Vitolo then nearly undid Schmeichel’s good work in the first half with an audacious effort from the narrowest of angles that clipped the inside of the Leicester ‘keeper’s near post.Just as the visitors were beginning to gain a foothold, Sevilla doubled their lead as Jovetic held off two Leicester defenders then laid the ball perfectly into Correa’s path to finish high past Schmeichel from close range. However, Claudio Ranieri’s men responded to get an away goal that could prove vital in three weeks’ time.Danny Drinkwater broke down the left and his low cross was turned home on the stretch by Vardy for his first goal since December.Leicester still had to see out a late onslaught as Sevilla sought to restore their two-goal advantage.Adil Rami came closest when his thunderous header came back off the bar, but Leicester held out to maintain hope their maiden Champions League campaign can stretch into the last eight.

Messi happy at Barcelona Argentina coach

Posted:

Buenos Aires (AFP) – Lionel Messi could not be happier than at Barcelona, and can crown his status as an all time great by winning the World Cup with Argentina, national coach Edgardo Bauza told AFP on Wednesday.“I can see just how happy he is at Barcelona with his family around him,” said Bauza, who has been at the helm of the Argentine national team since August 2016.“Of course when Leo is happy that helps him give his best performance, morale is crucial for form,” said the 59-year-old former defender.“A footballer is happy when he is playing and winning, otherwise he is rarely happy,” said Bauza.Messi’s Barcelona were beaten 4-0 at Paris Saint-Germain last week in their first-leg last-16 Champions League tie and with his contract running out in 2018 there is speculation he may leave. The coach refused to be drawn on Messi’s future.“At Barcelona, Manchester City or wherever, that’s his decision to take. I just want him to play and that’s all.”“He’s the type of player who always wants to be on the pitch, never wants a rest.”The coach went on to say Messi’s international record, with the trophy cabinet with Argentina bare, was no stain on his achievements.“Some say the fact he’s won nothing with Argentina means he’s not the best in the world, not the most dangerous, not worth as mush as some others,” said Bauza.“But we are going to try and win this next World Cup, which will make him one of the greatest of all time.”Argentina are currently fifth in the qualifiers for the South American 2018 World Cup qualifying group with four games to go.

Hazard hails Bridge factor as key to Chelseas success

Posted:

London (AFP) – Chelsea’s Eden Hazard believes some teams are already beaten even before they kick-off at Stamford Bridge. The Blues are eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table heading into this weekend’s matches, with Chelsea at home to relegation-threatened Swansea City. They can also look forward to a Stamford Bridge FA Cup quarter-final against a Manchester United side managed by former Blues boss Jose Mourinho.Chelsea’s 3-1 win over London rivals Arsenal in their last home match was the team’s 11th straight victory in all competitions at Stamford Bridge and they have not lost in front of their own fans since a defeat by Liverpool on September 16.And Belgian star Hazard believes such solid home form can propel Antonio Conte’s side to the English title.“Yes, it’s significant. It’s difficult for the opponent to come here and win games,” Hazard told the London Evening Standard on Wednesday.“Do I get that feeling that some teams are beaten before kick-off? Yes. We are playing better than last season.“It’s a little like two years ago when we won the league.“I remember the second part of the season back then — sometimes the team didn’t play well, but we always scored at least one goal and Thibaut Courtois would make at least one good save, like against Arsenal.“We are in full confidence here on this pitch. You know the fans bring everything, they support us.“I remember against Tottenham (the 2-1 win) earlier in the season when they scored, but the supporters kept going, they kept singing.“It’s great and we feel very good on this pitch. We know everything can happen in football, but we have self-belief and that is very important in football.”He added:. “We just need to keep the same concentration. It’s more difficult to play away because of the fans, but we are ready, we are professional. We can deal with the pressure. Everything is going good.“We know if we want to be champions, in our home stadium we have to win most of our games.“We can’t say all 19 because we have already lost to Liverpool, but we have to win 16 to 17 because it is our place and we are ready to deliver.”
