Germany elects 'anti-Trump' Steinmeier as president

Posted:

BERLIN (Agencies) - Billed as Germanys anti-Trump, former foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier was elected Sunday as the new head of state, vowing to stand up to simplistic populist rhetoric. The 61-year-old, who regularly polls as Germanys most popular politician, will represent the EUs top economy abroad in the largely ceremonial post and act as a kind of moral arbiter for the nation. His Social Democrats (SPD) hope the appointment will boost their fortunes just as their candidate Martin Schulz, the former European parliament president, readies to challenge Chancellor Angela Merkel in September elections.Accepting the five-year post, Steinmeier said he would promote dialogue and democracy in the current stormy times when many citizens fear the world is coming undone. And he vowed to stand up to the rising trend of populism and all those who think that in a world which is becoming more difficult, the solutions must become simpler. The answers will remain difficult, and I think the best answers can be found in democracy, he said, speaking to ARD television shortly after the vote.Steinmeier received 931 of 1,239 valid votes after Merkels conservatives, lacking a strong candidate of their own, agreed to back him to replace incumbent Joachim Gauck, 77, a former pastor from ex-communist East Germany. The vote was held in Berlins glass-domed Reichstag building by a special Federal Assembly, made up of national lawmakers and electors sent from Germanys 16 states -- among them deputies but also artists, writers, musicians and national football coach Joachim Loew.- Antidote to populists -With his snowy white hair, round glasses and dimpled smile, Steinmeier is one of Germanys best-known politicians, having twice served as top diplomat under Merkel for a total of seven years.Though the trained lawyer is usually measured in his speech, in the thick of last years US election campaign Steinmeier labelled Donald Trump a hate preacher. The Berliner Morgenpost newspaper judged that Steinmeier looks set to be the anti-Trump president when he assumes the post on March 19.Steinmeier however lost his cool once, in 2014, when he yelled at Berlin protesters who had accused him of being a warmonger over his Ukraine policy. The outburst was so unusual it became a minor YouTube hit.A policy wonk by nature, Steinmeier served as adviser and then chief of staff to Merkels predecessor, the SPDs Gerhard Schroeder. In 2009, Steinmeier ran against Merkel and lost badly, only to return years later to her cabinet.Political scientist Michael Broening of the SPDs think-tank the Friedrich Ebert Foundation said that as foreign minister, Steinmeier often acted as a voice of reason, bridging gaps and bringing people together. It is hardly surprising that Steinmeier has branded himself as the essential anti-Trump, he added.Steinmeier is well known in the worlds capitals, but his appointment worries some in eastern Europe, who see him as too soft on Russian President Vladimir Putin. He raised eyebrows with NATO partners last year when he criticised a military exercise in Poland as sabre rattling. The Kremlin was among the first to congratulate Steinmeier. The Russian head of state has expressed certainty that Mr Steinmeiers activities in this post will contribute to the development of Russian-German relations, it said in a statement. And French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, a former German teacher, tweeted praise in both French and German.Steinmeier has all my confidence for his contribution to EU unity and the friendship between our two countries, Ayrault said.Having Steinmeier move into the presidential Bellevue Castle in Berlin has emboldened the SPD.After years in the shadow of Merkel, the Social Democrats are smelling blood as the chancellor faces deep divisions within her conservative camp, and the rise of the hard-right populist party Alternative for Germany (AfD) after opening borders to a million asylum-seekers since 2015.Since Schulz took over the candidacy in late January, the SPD has risen sharply in the opinion polls. It scored 32 percent -- its highest in a decade and only one point behind Merkels conservatives -- in an Emnid poll for the Bild am Sonntag newspaper, which asked in a headline: Is this the beginning of the end of the Merkel era?The SPD finally hopes to have a realistic shot at toppling Merkel. For Germanys Social Democrats, Steinmeiers election is a prelude to something bigger to come: a victory in Septembers elections against Merkel, said Broening.

Mexicans hold massive anti-Trump protest

Posted:

MEXICO CITY (Agencies) - Thousands of Mexicans protested on Sunday against US President Donald Trump, hitting back at his anti-Mexican rhetoric and vows to make the country pay for his big, beautiful border wall.Mexico must be respected, Mr Trump, said a giant banner carried by protesters in Mexico City, who waved a sea of red, white and green Mexican flags as they marched down the capitals main avenue under the watchful eye of thousands of police. In what is shaping up to be Mexicos biggest anti-Trump protest yet, some 20 cities joined the call to march from a protest movement backed by dozens of universities, business associations and civic organisations.Protester Julieta Rosas was wearing a T-shirt with a picture of Trump sporting an Adolf Hitler mustache. Were here to make Trump see and feel that an entire country, united, is rising up against him and his xenophobic, discriminatory and fascist stupidity, said Rosas, a literature student at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).US-Mexican relations have plunged to their lowest point in decades since Trump took office on Jan 20.Trump, who launched his presidential campaign calling Mexican immigrants criminals and rapists, has infuriated the United States southern neighbor with his plan to stop illegal migration by building a wall on the border and his vows to make Mexico pay for it.Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto canceled a Jan 31 trip to Washington over Trumps insistence that Mexico will fund the wall.We are all migrants. We are all one. This is a time to build bridges, not walls, said 73-year-old protester Jose Antonio Sanchez, who was marching with his nine-year-old granddaughter.Trump has also wrought havoc on the Mexican economy with his threats to terminate the countrys privileged trade relationship with the United States, blaming Mexico for the loss of American jobs. The Mexican peso has taken a beating nearly every time Trump insisted on renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), attacked car makers and other companies that manufacture in Mexico, or vowed to slap steep tariffs on Mexican-made goods.Mexico sends 80 per cent of its exports to the United States - nearly US$300 billion in goods in 2015.The confrontation has stoked patriotic pride in Mexico, where US companies like Starbucks, Coca-Cola and McDonalds are the targets of boycott campaigns. Many people have taken to putting the Mexican flag in their profile pictures on social media. Not everyone is on board with Sundays protests, however. Some accused Pena Nieto of using the ostensibly non-partisan marches to try to bolster his own popularity - which has taken a beating over perceptions that he has been too conciliatory toward a bullying neighbor. When the rector of UNAM, the countrys largest university, backed the marches, many students and professors voiced outrage. The hashtag ItsNotTrumpItsPena is trending on Twitter in Mexico. The new nationalism appears to be giving a boost to Mexican presidential hopeful Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, whom some political analysts call a leftist Donald Trump for his populist, anti-establishment rhetoric.Lopez Obrador - widely known by his initials, AMLO - was the runner-up in the past two presidential elections. He is leading in opinion polls for presidential elections in 2018 and appears to be benefiting from Trumps anti-Mexican vitriol, which has badly dented not only Pena Nieto - who is ineligible for re-election - but also the ruling PRI party.Ironically, a Lopez Obrador victory next year could work to Trumps disadvantage, giving him a far more hardline counterpart to work with.As Sundays protests unfold in Mexico, Lopez Obrador will be visiting the United States to address both Mexicans and Americans in Los Angeles about what he called Trumps poisonous rhetoric.

Football: Burnley's Brady checks Chelsea charge

Posted:

BURNLEY (Agencies) - Home debutant Robbie Brady scored a memorable free-kick to earn Burnley a 1-1 draw on Sunday that prevented Chelsea moving 12 points clear at the Premier League summit.Brady cancelled out an early strike from Pedro and while the point stretched Chelseas lead to 10 points, their advantage will be trimmed to eight points if Manchester City win at Bournemouth on Monday.Bradys goal continued his recent run of success against Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, with the winger having also scored the winning goal for Ireland against Contes Italy in the Euro 2016 group stage. We must be disappointed at the point because I think this type of game we could win, said Conte. It is a pity. We started very well and created chances to score and then Burnley found the goal with the free-kick. Now it is important to restart. We know there is a long way (to the end of the season). It is important to work and play this type of game and fight.Burnley, whose home record is bettered only by second-place Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea themselves, looked like they might be swept away following an electrifying start from the league leaders. But Sean Dyches team, who had won seven straight games at Turf Moor after losing to Manchester City in mid-November, showed great resilience and deservedly equalised after 24 minutes through Brady.A foul by Nemanja Matic on Joey Barton on the edge of the area presented Brady, a club-record £13 million (US$16.2 million) signing from Norwich City last month, with his chance. He took it in style, curling a magnificent 20-yard free-kick over the wall and into the top-left corner. That cancelled out an equally impressive opener from Chelsea that was started, and finished, by Pedro in the seventh minute. The Spanish winger helped begin the attack deep in his own half with a pass to Eden Hazard who, in turn, fed Victor Moses on the right. After skipping past Bradys crude challenge, Moses crossed for Pedro, who had covered nearly 70 yards, and his low, angled shot gave Tom Heaton no chance in the Burnley goal.Chelsea had threatened to simply sweep their hosts away during a positive opening in which they repeatedly hit Burnley on the break. But after weathering that pressure, the Clarets began to show why they have become so feared on their own turf.Ashley Barnes was presented with a couple of half-chances before the equaliser and, soon after it, Andre Gray flashed an inviting low cross through the Chelsea six-yard box.Burnley should even have taken a lead into the interval after Barton found full-back Matt Lowton, who only had Thibaut Courtois to beat but was denied by a solid block from the Chelsea goalkeeper. The furious tempo of the game continued after the restart, with a mistake by Matic and an error by David Luiz culminating in Gray gathering Barnes pass and shooting straight at Courtois. In response, and thanks to a Ben Bee mistake at the other end, Diego Costa had a shot blocked before Cesar Azpilicueta chanced his luck with a long-range shot that just cleared the Burnley crossbar.Burnley substitute Scott Arfield was also guilty of a potentially costly error when his weak clearance was picked up by Hazard, but the Chelsea mans effort was hurried and well over.Yet another Chelsea attack ended in similar fashion a few minutes later with substitute Cesc Fabregas slicing a shot hopelessly wide from the edge of the penalty area.Arfield almost twisted and turned his way through on goal late on, but Luizs challenge prevented him from giving Burnley six successive home league victories for the first time in 56 years. It was a strong performance against a top, top side, said Burnley manager Dyche. I want us to be awkward to play against and be productive and we showed that.

Football: Mawson and Olsson sharpen Leicester's pain

Posted:

SWANSEA (Agencies) - Defenders Alfie Mawson and Martin Olsson gave Swansea City a 2-0 win over Leicester City on Sunday that nudged the flatlining Premier League champions closer to the relegation zone.Mawson and Olsson netted crisp strikes prior to half-time at the Liberty Stadium to give Swansea manager Paul Clement a fourth win in six games since he succeeded the sacked Bob Bradley.Swanseas victory, their 100th in the top flight, took them four points clear of the bottom three and left Claudio Ranieris Leicester just one point and one position clear of danger in 17th place. The extraordinary feats of last season have been replaced by history of a different kind as Leicester became the first reigning champions to lose five successive top-flight games since Chelsea in 1956.They also became the first team to go six games without scoring at the start of a calendar year in the English top tier since Stoke City in 1985.Brought back down to earth after their mid-week FA Cup win at Derby County, Leicester could scarcely be in a more sorry state as their Champions League last 16 tie with Sevilla looms on the horizon.Clement made one change, bringing Nathan Dyer in for Wayne Routledge, but was forced to reverse the switch after Dyers reunion with his old club was curtailed by an ankle injury sustained in the fifth minute.Dyer, who spent last season on loan at Leicester, duly re-emerged on the bench, the lower half of his left leg encased in a protective boot. With the big guns restored to the Leicester line-up after their 3-1 win over local rivals Derby, the visitors looked to assert themselves. But blocked shots from Wilfred Ndidi, Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez were all they had to show for their early endeavours and as the first half wore on, Swansea established control. After Routledge had seen a volley parried by Kasper Schmeichel and Gylfi Sigurdsson had drilled a shot wide with his left foot from outside the box, the home side took a 36th-minute lead.Robert Huth could only help Sigurdssons free-kick towards the back post, where it was nodded back into the danger zone by Federico Fernandez, and Mawson lashed a vicious volley past Schmeichel.Swansea landed another blow in first-half stoppage time after a slick one-touch move involving Tom Carroll, Fernando Llorente and Sigurdsson. The latters through-ball freed Olsson, who drove into the box from wide on the left before battering a shot between Schmeichel and his near post.Ranieri made a double change at half-time, sending on Ben Chilwell and Islam Slimani for Christian Fuchs and Marc Albrighton.Slimani came closest to bringing Leicester back into the game, first seeing a shot blocked by Lukasz Fabianski from Mahrezs deft pass and then just failing to get a touch on Mahrezs right-wing cross. But Leicesters problems in front of goal were destined to continue, a wild shot from Vardy drawing derisive hoots from the Swansea fans and summing up the champions sorry predicament.

Confident Dimitrov downs Goffin to win Sofia Open

Posted:

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov gave the roaring partisan crowd plenty to cheer about as he beat Belgian David Goffin 7-5, 6-4 to win the Sofia Open for the first time on Sunday. The 25-year-old, who reached the Australian Open semi-finals after winning the Brisbane International last month, claimed his sixth career title to the delight of 12,000 passionate fans. After a tight opening set, Dimitrov gave little breathing space to his opponent to take a 5-0 lead in the second set. But Goffin, who was hoping to win his first title since 2014, broke twice to make it 5-4.Dimitrov dug deep into his reserves to break again and conclude the final after his fourth championship point. He promptly collapsed to his knees, burst into tears and kissed the court.Without you (the Bulgarian fans), I could never win this tournament, Dimitrov said in a courtside interview. This title means a lot to me. Today, after the last point, I felt again like a kid playing in front of a home crowd.Second-seed Goffin complained to the umpire about the hostile atmosphere in the hall at the end of the first set.The Belgian, ranked 11th in the world, has now lost all three of his main tour meetings with the Bulgarian, including a straight sets defeat at the Australian Open.Former world number eight Dimitrov had seen his ranking plummet to 40 last July but has now emerged from that slump to climb back up to 13th.

Spieth wins emphatically by four shots at Pebble Beach

Posted:

SAN FRANCISCO (Agencies) - Two-time major champion Jordan Spieth fired a bogey-free two-under par 70 on Sunday to win the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and capture his ninth career US PGA Tour title. The 23-year-old American birdied the second and second-to-last holes in the final round at Pebble Beach Golf Links, the only course used on Sunday after three layouts were played over the tournaments first three rounds.Spieth finished on 19-under par 268, having seized a six-stroke lead after 54 holes with back-to-back 65s on Friday and Saturday that allowed him to cruise to a four-stroke triumph over fellow American Kelly Kraft. Its unbelievable. We had just a fantastic weekend, Spieth said. I hit 17 greens today. It was just kind of a dream round when you are leading by a bunch. Finally got one to go in at 17.In his 100th career PGA event, Spieth birdied the par-5 second hole after reaching the green in two shots and tapping in and then made 14 pars before sinking a 30-foot birdie putt at the par-3 17th.I kept saying, I dont like playing boring golf, Spieth said. But thats what was needed today and thats how we closed it out.Spieth, who won the 2015 Masters and US Open, captured his first title of the year and became the first player 23-or-under to win by three or more shots five times.Only 14-time major winner Tiger Woods has won nine PGA titles at a younger age, about a month quicker than Spieth, who also became the second-youngest Pebble Beach champion after compatriot John Cook in 1981.It was Spieths first triumph since winning the Australian Open last November. Spieth lost in his first four attempts to win when leading after 54 holes but since then has won six of seven such opportunities, faltering only with an epic back-nine collapse at last years Masters.Reigning US Open champion Dustin Johnson was third on 273 with fellow American Brandt Snedeker another shot back and world number one Jason Day of Australia on 275 alongside Spains Jon Rahm and American Gary Woodland.Kraft fired a 67 but never came nearer than three shots to Spieth in settling for his best career PGA finish. This is great, Kraft said. My game is really good. I havent been clicking all four rounds and everything clicked here. What a fabulous place to do it.Johnson fired a 68 but wondered what might have been had he not taken a bogey at the par-5 sixth and missed short birdie putts at the par-5 14th and 18th holes.I felt like I was playing really well, Johnson said. I played well on the front. I just didnt make any putts.Im happy with the way I finished, Johnson added. The game is starting to turn around. Im just getting refreshed. Im getting back into it. I think the game is in good shape for the rest of this year.

India need seven wickets for victory on final day

HYDERABAD (Reuters) - Indias spinners sent back the top three Bangladesh batsmen in the second innings of the one-off Test at Hyderabad on Sunday to keep the hosts on course for victory.Chasing an improbable target of 459 in four sessions for a win, Bangladesh reached 103-3 at stumps on the fourth day of their maiden Test in India, the worlds top-ranked nation.Shakib Al Hasan was unbeaten on 21 for Bangladesh with Mahmudullah nine not out at the other end.Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who during the day became the fasTest to reach 250 wickets in Tests, dismissed Tamim Iqbal (3) and Mominul Haque (27) while spin partner Ravindra Jadeja picked up the wicket of Soumya Sarkar, who made 42.Sarkar and Mominul added 60 for the second wicket but both left-handers were out in the space of 14 deliveries, dampening the touring sides hopes of saving the Test match.Cheteshwar Pujara hit an unbeaten 54 off 58 balls as India declared their second innings on 159 for four at tea.The hosts batted for 29 overs and scored at a rate of more than five runs per over with useful contributions from captain Virat Kohli (38) and Ajinkya Rahane (28). Paceman Taskin and Shakib shared the four Indian wickets. In the morning session, Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim registered his fifth Test hundred before his side were bundled out for 388 as the hosts took a first-innings lead of 299.The 29-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman was the last man out for his side on 127 with Bangladeshs innings ending shortly before lunch. Kohli opted against enforcing the follow-on after his bowlers needed almost an entire session to pick up Bangladeshs last four wickets.Resuming on 322-6, the visitors got off to a bad start as seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar breached the defence of half-centurion Mehedi Hasan with the fourth ball of the morning without a run being added to their overnight total.Paceman Umesh Yadav, the most impressive of Indias bowlers, got Taijul Islam to glove one back to wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, raising fears for Mushfiqur that he could run out of partners before reaching three figures. However, Taskin Ahmed stayed with his captain for a 39-run ninth-wicket stand, during which Mushfiqur scored freely. The diminutive right-hander top-edged Ishant Sharma for a six and then reached his century when the lanky bowler miss-fielded near the boundary to allow a four.He was finally out, caught down the leg side to Ashwin, who reached 250 Test wickets with the dismissal.Umesh finished with three wickets, while Ashwin and Jadeja picked up two wickets apiece.
