Lincoln, Millwall claim famous FA Cup upsets

Posted:

London (AFP) – Non-league Lincoln City and third-tier Millwall struck late, late winners as Burnley and Premier League champions Leicester City were humbled on a historic day in the FA Cup on Saturday.Sean Raggett scored an 89th-minute header as Lincoln, who reside in the fifth-tier National League, stunned Burnley 1-0 in the fifth round in one of the biggest upsets in the competition’s history.Ten-man Millwall, seventh in League One, claimed a third top-flight scalp in this season’s competition by dramatically sinking ailing Leicester 1-0 via a 90th-minute goal by Shaun Cummings.“I’m lost for words. It’s mad. I can’t believe it” Lincoln’s match-winner Raggett, 23, told BT Sport. “Crazy. A non-league side in the quarter-finals, in modern football. It’s unheard of.”Eighty-one places below Burnley in the English football pyramid, Lincoln prevailed when centre-back Raggett squeezed a header over the line following a late corner at Turf Moor.Lincoln become the first non-league team to reach the FA Cup’s last eight since Queens Park Rangers in 1914.They are the eighth side from below England’s four fully professional divisions to have beaten top-flight opposition since World War II and only the second to have done so since 1989.“We said it was a one-in-a-100 chance and thankfully we got that opportunity,” said Lincoln manager Danny Cowley.“The last eight of the FA Cup sounds pretty good. We work hard on our corners and our free-kicks and we are mightily proud of the players.”Burnley drew 1-1 at home to runaway Premier League leaders Chelsea last weekend and have beaten Liverpool and champions Leicester City on home turf this season.Lincoln join Hereford United, who toppled Newcastle United in 1972, and Sutton United, conquerors of Coventry City in 1989, among the ranks of the FA Cup’s non-league giant-killers.Sutton, also of the National League, will hope to pull off another upset when they host Arsenal on Monday.Burnley manager Sean Dyche made six changes and it was quickly clear that his side were in for a scrap as Lincoln’s Nathan Arnold squared for Jack Muldoon to sweep a first-time shot over the bar.– Man City held –There was an early setback for Burnley when Johann Berg Gudmundsson was forced off in the 20th minute after a foul by Alan Power, with George Boyd coming on.Burnley were unable to convert the handful of chances they created, Lincoln goalkeeper Paul Farman saving from Andre Gray and Joey Barton, while Scott Arfield and Gray shot off-target.Burnley’s frustrations manifested themselves in some antagonistic behaviour by renowned brawler Barton during the second half.He escaped censure for stamping on Matt Rhead’s foot and then pretending to have been struck by the strapping Lincoln striker and was later booked for slapping Terry Hawkridge. With a replay beckoning, Sam Habergham’s corner from the right was headed back across goal by Lincoln captain Luke Waterfall and Raggett met it with a header that Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton could not keep out.“They used everything they needed to use,” Dyche told the BBC.“You have to work, be diligent and believe you will get another chance. I think they only had one chance — credit to them. My team were nowhere near the level they can show.”Millwall followed Lincoln’s lead by overcoming the 52nd-minute dismissal of Jake Cooper to sink a Leicester team showing 10 changes thanks to defender Cummings’s last-gasp strike.Beaten finalists in 2004, Millwall have also accounted for Bournemouth and Watford.Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City face an unwanted replay after drawing 0-0 at Championship high-fliers Huddersfield Town, three days out from their Champions League last 16 showdown with Monaco.Middlesbrough needed an 86th-minute Cristhian Stuani goal to secure a 3-2 win over third-tier Oxford United, who had hit back from 2-0 down to level through Chris Maguire and Antonio Martinez.Premier League leaders Chelsea visit second-tier Wolverhampton Wanderers, conquerors of Liverpool in the previous round, in Saturday’s late game.

Chelseas Conte wary of Double talk

Posted:

Wolverhampton (AFP) – Antonio Conte has warned his players to avoid complacency as they seek to become just the third club in the history of English football to win the Premier League and FA Cup ‘Double’ on two separate occasions.A 2-0 fifth round win away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday took Chelsea through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, while they maintain a healthy, eight-point, lead at the top of the Premier League table. That has left Conte’s team on course to join Arsenal, one of their London rivals, and Manchester United in winning ‘The Double’ for a second time, although the cautious manager refused to take anything for granted.“I think it’s a little early to talk about this,” Conte said. “But for sure we are in these two competitions.“In the league we are doing a great job to stay on top of the table. Now, in the FA Cup, we are in the quarter-finals and I’m pleased with this because it means we’re doing very well,” the Italian added.“We’re working very well but honestly, after this game it’s important to understand that nothing is easy,” explained Conte, who joined Chelsea in pre-season after a stint managing Italy’s national side.“If someone thinks that for sure in the league Chelsea will become champions, and for sure we can win the FA Cup, it will be very difficult.“But we know that. We understand we want to stay there and we want to try to reach the end and win some trophies.“Because when you stay at a great club then your job is this, to try to fight until the end to try to win some trophies. We’re in a good position now but we have to work very hard.”The biggest crowd at Molineux for 36 years — 30,193 — saw Chelsea negotiate the fifth round tie with second-half goals from Pedro and Diego Costa. But the top-flight visitors were forced to battle for the victory and withstand a strong first half performance from a Wolves team that is currently struggling at the wrong end of the second-tier Championship table.– ‘Bow down to Lincoln’ –Meanwhile Conte also joined football fans all over the country in expressing his admiration for non-league Lincoln City who produced one of the biggest FA Cup upsets of all-time to win 1-0 at Premier League Burnley earlier on Saturday and reach the last eight.“We must bow down to them,” said Conte. “It’s true this is a great achievement for them and also I think that’s the beauty of football. It is the FA Cup, it’s incredible.“In Italy, it’s impossible for this to happen. It’s fantastic because it shows that football is incredible and anything can happen if you trust in your work, if you have a great will to fight and to take on the challenge.“When you start, the challenge can be impossible but instead, Lincoln are now in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and deserve a great compliment from me, from Chelsea and from the whole country.“It’s a fantastic story, historic, and I’m pleased to live this story with them because now we’re with Lincoln in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. That’s fantastic.”For his part, Wolves manager Paul Lambert insisted that it would be tough for any of Chelsea’s top-flight rivals to stop them winning both the Premier League and FA Cup this season.“They’re a very, very good team with a top manager who’s played the game and knows the emotion on and off the pitch,” said Lambert.“I think it will be a hell of a team to stop them. Without a doubt they could win the league and cup double.“They’re relentless. They have so many lads who didn’t even play tonight. I looked at the team tonight and thought it might have been a tad weaker, but dear oh dear It’s going to be a hell of a team that stops them from winning both trophies.”

Gareth Bale sees silver lining in injury misery

Posted:

Madrid (AFP) – Gareth Bale hopes three tough months on the sidelines will have their recompense by helping Real Madrid’s bid for La Liga and Champions League glory and Wales’ hopes of reaching the World Cup.Bale made an instant impact on his first taste of action for 88 days after damaging ankle ligaments as he fired home Madrid’s second in a 2-0 win over Espanyol on Saturday just 13 minutes after coming off the bench. And the Welshman hopes he can match his fantastic form from the final three months of last season after suffering from injury problems earlier in the campaign.“Every cloud has a silver lining, hopefully I am a bit fresher than maybe some others,” said Bale.“It can work in my advantage to be out for a little bit, but the important thing now is to get back to 100 percent and playing well and to help the team.”Victory took Real four points clear of Barcelona at the top of La Liga with a game in hand. However, Zinedine Zidane’s men face an intense final few months of the campaign with 18 La Liga games and their defence of the Champions League still to play for.Bale’s return is also a timely boost for Wales boss Chris Coleman ahead of his side’s crunch World Cup qualifier away to the Republic of Ireland on March 24.“I plan not to get injured any more,” added Bale.“Hopefully now I can keep building my fitness up over the next few weeks…hopefully I can be fit for Real Madrid as soon as possible to play 90 minutes, and obviously for Wales as well.”Bale was given a hero’s reception on his return by the Santiago Bernabeu crowd. And he admitted getting on the scoresheet was just a bonus to the joy of being back among the action.“I was happy just to be on the pitch. To get a goal is an extra bonus and thankful to help the team and see the game off,” he continued.“There has been some tough moments, but we have an amazing medical team here. Jaime Benito (physio) has been incredible for me, my family have been amazing, my fiancee, my kids.“It’s been a difficult time but when you get a reception like that it makes it all worth it.”Madrid face tougher tests over the next week with trips to Valencia and Villarreal to come. And Bale insisted he isn’t expecting to be rushed back into the starting line-up by Zidane.“I’ve been out for three months so it will take a few weeks to get back to 100 percent, it’s just about managing my game time.“It depends how I feel game-by-game. Today was 20 minutes. I will speak with the manager about Valencia and Villarreal.”However, Zidane admitted Bale brings special qualities that others can’t offer.“We only have one Gareth Bale,” said the Frenchman. “We are happy to see Gareth back with the team. He is a special player, he gives us something different from the rest.”

Id prefer to stay at Arsenal, says Wenger

Posted:

London (AFP) – Arsene Wenger has revealed he wants to stay in football management long-term and has indicated for the first time he would like to extend his spell as Arsenal’s manager. The Frenchman’s future is up in the air, with his contract expiring at the end of the season and events on the pitch exposing him to criticism from supporters.Wenger said earlier this week he intends to continue working as a manager even if his 21-year reign at the Emirates Stadium comes to an end, but he says his preference would be to remain at Arsenal. When asked about his future in the game, the 67-year-old told reporters: “If you have a team, maybe you can employ me.“That’s not a threat. My preference is always to manage Arsenal. I think I have shown that. But I am adult enough to analyse the situation.”Wenger’s latest low came last Wednesday when Arsenal were crushed 5-1 at Bayern Munich in the Champions League, leaving them on the brink of a seventh successive last-16 exit. They are also 10 points below leaders Chelsea in the Premier League. But Wenger believes he still has at least four years left in his managerial career and wants to work for longer than Manchester United’s Alex Ferguson, who was 71 when he retired in 2013.“Ferguson has some other interests in life,” he said.“He was older than I am today. He was four years older and retired at 71. I’m 67. Maybe (I’ll manage for) more, or maybe less. I don’t know. Everyone is different.“I do not want to take anything away from Ferguson. He was an unbelievable manager, but had enough. I’m not at that stage.”– ‘Blame culture’ –Wenger also said this week he will make his decision on his future next month or in April, a change from his previous suggestion it would be at the end of the season.Arsenal visit minnows Sutton United in the FA Cup on Monday and Wenger fears his side’s performance against Bayern was so abject it will take a long time for his squad to recover from it.“It will never be quick,” he said. “We will keep that with us for our whole lives. But overall I still believe in life if you dwell too much on the past, you forget to prepare the future.“You have to show that is part of a successful life. You have to deal with disappointments and focus 100 percent on what is in front of you and deal with that.”Wenger refused to single out playmaker Mesut Ozil for any blame following the loss in his native Germany.“When you have a heavy defeat like that, it’s difficult to come out on one individual because you look at the way we conceded goals and you can as well criticise some other players,” he said.“But overall for every single player it is always to try to get up to the next level and he is like everybody else.“I absolutely accept the situation and analyse it well. No matter how much we cry together, we will not change the result. The only thing we can do is win the next game.“I would say it is more about character and being united. It is important you do not get in a blame culture and be united to respond well.”

Last gasp Lewandowski saves Bayern in Berlin

Posted:

Berlin (AFP) – Robert Lewandowski hit a 96th-minute equaliser to salvage Bayern Munich’s 1-1 draw at Hertha Berlin on Saturday and extended their lead in the Bundesliga table to eight points.Bayern were seconds away from what would have been their second league defeat this season when Lewandowski fired home his 24th goal in all competitons to cancel out Vedad Ibisevic’s first-half strike.“Robert Lewandowski is a fantastic player and very important for us,” enthused Bayern’s relieved coach Carlo Ancelotti.“We’re happy, because it was a hard game.“Hertha put in a good first half, but it was different after the break and we managed to create more pressure.”It was a Champions League hangover for Bayern following Wednesday’s 5-1 hammering of Arsenal in the last 16 first leg as Ancelotti made four changes to the side that beat the Gunners.Hertha went ahead on 21 minutes when Ibisevic ghosted in behind Bayern’s defence and deflected Marvin Plattenhardt’s free-kick past Manuel Neuer.Despite enjoying more than 70 percent possession, Bayern struggled and Lewandowski’s equaliser only came deep into added time.Thiago Alcantara’s free-kick found Ajren Robben on the edge of the area, his shot was blocked, but Lewandowski drilled home the rebound to deny Hertha a first win over Bayern in 12 attempts.Second-placed RB Leipzig can close the gap behind Bayern when they play Borussia Moenchengladbach away on Sunday.Elsewhere on Saturday, Lukasz Piszczek had a hand in all three goals as Borussia Dortmund bounced back from Tuesday’s Champions League last 16 first-leg defeat at Benfica with a 3-0 trouncing of Wolfsburg at home.Dortmund’s iconic south stand, nicknamed the ‘Gelbe Wand’ (Yellow Wall), which holds 25,000 fans, stood empty. It was a German FA punishment after hooligans attacked visiting RB Leipzig fans, including families, earlier this month.Dortmund went ahead when Wolfsburg defender Jeffrey Bruma headed Piszczek’s close-range cross into his own net on 20 minutes.Poland international Piszczek added the second, heading home Ousmane Dembele’s cross on 48 minutes, and then set up Dembele for the third on 59 minutes.Hoffenheim climbed to fourth with a 2-0 win at home to bottom side Darmstadt as ex-Leicester City striker Andrej Kramaric scored both their goals.Ten-man Eintracht Frankfurt dropped to fifth after their shock 2-0 defeat to strugglers Ingolstadt, who had Australia striker Mathew Leckie sent off and remain second from bottom.Ingolstadt took an early lead through French defender Romain Bregerie while Frankfurt finished the first half with 10 men.Defender David Abraham was shown a red card when his clearance kick connected with Dario Lezcano’s chest on 35 minutes.Frakfurt’s Japan midfielder Makoto Hasebe had a second-half penalty saved, then hit the crossbar from the follow-up, and Pascal Gross scored Ingolstadt’s second goal from a penalty at the other end 13 minutes later.Ingolstadt also played with a man less for the last 10 minutes after Leckie was shown a straight red for a similar foul to Abraham — accidentally kicking an opponent.Relegation-threatened Werder Bremen escaped the bottom three with a 2-0 win at Mainz.Ex-Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry gave Bremen the lead with a towering header on 16 minutes before Denmark international Thomas Delaney slammed home a free-kick to double the lead seven minutes later.

Chelseas Pedro, Costa muzzle Wolves in FA Cup

Posted:

Wolverhampton (AFP) – Second-half goals from Pedro and Diego Costa earned Premier League leaders Chelsea a 2-0 win in a difficult FA Cup fifth-round tie at second-tier Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.Pedro headed in after 65 minutes following an intricate build-up involving Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Willian.Costa sealed a place in the quarter-finals in the 89th minute after defender Matt Doherty inadvertently deflected a pass into his path. The prolific Chelsea striker had the time and space to easily stroke the ball into the Wolves goal, finally killing off the Championship side’s brave resistance.Having accounted for the Premier League scalps of Stoke City and Liverpool in previous rounds, Wolves looked in the mood to add the division’s leaders to that list.In front of Molineux’s biggest crowd for 36 years, the home side made an electrifying start.Asmir Begovic had already been required to tip a dangerous Conor Coady cross over his bar in the opening exchanges when former Chelsea youngster George Saville found the ball at his feet 15 yards out.The unmarked midfielder unleashed a powerful left-foot shot that thundered against the left-hand post, with Andreas Weimann blasting a follow-up effort over. That was the start of an absorbing cup tie, with the Championship side putting their league troubles behind them and going toe-to-toe with a Chelsea team who made seven changes from their least league game.Chelsea manager Antonio Conte had still fielded a strong line-up, however, with former England international John Terry continuing his ever-present status in the FA Cup and Fabregas handed a start.Fabregas looked capable of picking a hole in the home defence and did precisely that after 12 minutes when his lofted pass sent Willian sprinting into the area. The Brazilian attempted to chip over Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, who did well to put a touch on the shot and steer it over his net.– Crude trip –The tie had plenty of aggression and a raucous atmosphere, especially when the home supporters claimed Weimann had been brought down by Willian in the area midway through the first half. That appeal was turned down by referee Jonathan Moss, but Wolves maintained the pressure when Helder Costa turned neatly and unleashed a low shot that Begovic smothered well. But Chelsea still posed a serious threat as Fabregas and Willian attempted to find the pass that would play in Costa over the Wolves back four.A number of times the tactic came close to working and in first-half injury time a cross from the right by wing-back Victor Moses was met by Costa, back to goal, who hooked an effort wide.Wolves opened the second half in similar, threatening fashion, with Pedro the first Chelsea player cautioned for a crude trip on the dangerous Helder Costa. But it was Chelsea’s Nathaniel Chalobah who was presented with the first shot of the half, a low strike from the edge of the area that went directly at the goalkeeper.Chelsea’s Costa also received yet another neat pass from Hazard and almost set up Chalobah for an attempt on goal, only to be denied by more committed Wolves defending.Wolves’ Costa eased the pressure momentarily with a high free-kick that Danny Batth headed into the arms of Begovic. But soon after his namesake was played in by yet another Fabregas pass and left Batth on the floor before shooting into the side-netting.The opening goal was not long in coming, although Dave Edwards looked like he might head in an equaliser minutes later, only to be denied by an important defensive header from Kurt Zouma. In the closing stages, Fabregas should have doubled their advantage when he shot wide from Eden Hazard’s pass, before Costa’s strike — his 16th of the season — put the game to bed.
