'EU needs Turkey more than Turkey needs EU': Erdogan

Posted:

ANKARA (AFP) - The European Union needs Turkey more than Ankara needs the bloc, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday, denouncing a new European Parliament report that was sharply critical of the rule of law in his country. His comments come amid controversy in Europe over a deal between Brussels and Turkey to stop the flow of migrants from wartorn Syria and other troubled countries to EU territory. The European Union needs Turkey more than Turkey needs the European Union, Erdogan said to cheers in a televised speech to municipal leaders in Ankara, denouncing as provocative last weeks European Parliament report which accused Ankara of backsliding on democracy. He lashed out at the report for not praising Turkeys hosting of some 2.7 million refugees from the war in neighbouring Syria.Three million people have been looked after in this country so they dont disturb the Europeans. Is there anything about this in the report? said Erdogan. At a time when our relations with the European Union are in a positive phase regarding the migrants... it is provocative to come out with a report like that, he added.Turkey has been given a string of promises from the European Union in return for stepping up work to stop migrants crossing to EU territory and also taking them back.Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu warned Monday that Ankara would not abide by its side of the deal unless the EU fulfils a promise to grant Turks visa-free travel by June. This is a mutual commitment. If the EU cannot take the necessary steps required of it then of course it cannot be expected of Turkey to take these steps, Davutoglu told reporters at Ankara airport before heading to Strasbourg to address the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Five dead in rocket fire on Turkey town after Syrian child dies

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AFP) - The death toll from rocket strikes on a Turkish town from an area in Syria controlled by jihadists rose to five on Tuesday after another Syrian child died in hospital, reports said.Four Syrian children are now confirmed to have been killed in the strikes by Katyusha-type rockets Monday afternoon on the town of Kilis on the Syrian border, along with a Syrian shepherd, the CNN-Turk and NTV channels reported. In the last weeks, Islamic State (IS) jihadists have repeatedly fired rockets at Kilis, the only town in Turkey where refugees from Syrias five-year civil war now outnumber local Turks.Last week, Kilis residents held protests over the inability of local authorities to protect them, prompting a visit by Turkeys powerful spy chief Hakan Fidan.Turkey has responded to each of the strikes on Kilis by destroying the launching positions of the jihadists with howitzer fire.Turkish officials have repeatedly lauded the hospitality of people in Kilis towards Syrians as an example of how Turks are hosting the 2.7 million Syrians who have fled their countrys civil war to Turkey. The four children were killed, and four others were injured, when a rocket ripped through a three-storey building where nine Syrian families had been living, helped by a local association, state-run news agency Anatolia said. The children had lost their fathers in the civil war and had come to Turkey with their mothers around two years ago, it added. The shepherd meanwhile was tending his flock when he was hit by another rocket which landed close to a school in Kilis. A 14-year-old Turkish boy was also injured in that attack. At least 11 people have now been killed so far in strikes on Kilis from Syria but this was the heaviest toll recorded so far in a single day.

Iraq speaker suspends parliament 'until further notice'

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Embattled Iraqi parliament speaker Salim al-Juburi said Tuesday parliament sessions would be suspended until further notice after a week of turmoil during which lawmakers brawled and sought to sack him. Some MPs voted last week to remove Juburi and elected Adnan al-Janabi as his interim replacement, meaning there are now two claimants to the speakership.Juburi insists the vote to sack him and his deputies was invalid because the session lacked the necessary quorum, but his opponents are seeking to move ahead with selecting replacements.I announce the suspension of sessions... of the Iraqi parliament until further notice, Juburi said in a statement. But Janabi has called for a session to be held on Thursday, so MPs may still meet without Juburis leadership.Juburis decision was taken to preserve the reputation of parliament and prevent it from being a place for conflict, he said. There has been plenty of conflict in parliament over the past week: lawmakers held an overnight sit-in and threw punches in the chamber, as well as seeking to sack Juburi. The turmoil began with disagreement over two proposed cabinet line-ups presented by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, but shifted to calls for Juburi to go.Abadi has sought to replace the cabinet of party-affiliated ministers with a government of technocrats, but has faced significant opposition from powerful political parties that rely on control of ministries for patronage and funds. Both the United States and the United Nations have warned that the political crisis could distract from efforts to combat the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group, which overran large areas of Iraq in 2014.

South Korea, Japan, US warn Pyongyang over possible nuclear test

Posted:

SEOUL (AFP) - South Korea, Japan and the United States on Tuesday warned North Korea of harsher sanctions and deeper isolation if it went ahead with a fifth nuclear test or other provocations. The warning, which followed a trilateral meeting of top diplomatic officials, came amid growing speculation that Pyongyang is in the final stages of preparing an underground nuclear detonation at its Punggye-ri test site.Such a move would be a dramatic act of defiance by North Korea in the face of strong UN sanctions imposed after its most recent nuclear test in January. If North Korea conducts another provocation despite the international communitys repeated warnings, it will face even stronger sanctions and deeper isolation, said South Koreas Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung-Nam.Lim was briefing reporters after talks with his US and Japanese counterparts, Tony Blinken and Akitaka Saiki. We will not tolerate another provocation by North Korea, Lim said.South Korean President Park Geun-Hye told her cabinet Monday that intelligence sources had detected signs that Pyongyang was preparing a new test, an assessment echoed the same day by her defence ministry.North Korea is gearing up for a rare and much-hyped ruling party congress early next month, at which leader Kim Jong-Un is expected to take credit for pushing the countrys nuclear weapons programme to new heights.Numerous analysts have suggested the regime might carry out a fifth nuclear test as a display of strength just before the congress opens.Describing North Korea as the regions most acute threat, Blinken said the US and its two key Asian allies had agreed to expand cooperation on sanctions implementation in response to the Norths provocative and destabilising behaviour. The sanctions agreed by the UN Security Council after the Norths January 6 test were the toughest imposed to date on North Korea over its nuclear weapons programme.Blinken said the measures were only just beginning to bite and it would take time for North Korea to really feel the extra pressure. If North Korea undertakes additional provocations, the existing Security Council resolutions call for additional significant measures ... so thats exactly what the international community would do, he added.

Referring towards the government’s ministers, Khan said that “they are not ashamed of leveling allegations against a hospital in order to hide their corruption”. He also said that if the ministers were concerned in regards to the condition of the hospitals of the country, they would have not stated anything against SKMCH.He inquired that why was no action taken if the money earned through SKMCH was invested in unfair businesses, adding that it was the first instance that there ever occurred a protest in order to hide corruption.
