Tennis: Djokovic rips Nishikori for sixth Miami crown

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - World number one Novak Djokovic won his third consecutive ATP Miami Open title Sunday, downing Japanese sixth seed Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-3 for a record-matching sixth crown overall. The 28-year-old Serbian captured his fifth trophy in six seasons on the Florida hardcourts to equal Andre Agassis Miami record total and took a record 28th career ATP Masters title, one better than the old mark he shared with Rafael Nadal.I have a very special connection to this tournament, Djokovic said. Back in 2007 at Miami it was the biggest tournament that I had won. It has been a springboard for everything that has come after that.By taking home $1.028 million (902,000 euros) for the title, Djokovic surpassed Roger Federer as the all-time ATP prize money leader, his $98,199,548 nudging him beyond the $97,855,881 of the Swiss 17-time Grand Slam champion, who pulled out of Miami with a stomach virus.Djokovic, who took his 63rd career ATP title, stretched his Miami win streak to 16 matches with his 30th victory in 31 starts dating to 2011 and improved to 28-1 on the season, the lone loss coming when an eye problem forced him to retire in a Dubai quarter-final against Spains Feliciano Lopez.Djokovic, who in January won at Doha and captured an 11th career Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, also swept the US double of Miami and Indian Wells for the third year in a row and fourth time overall. The only other man with three Miami crowns in a row was Agassi from 2001-2003.Nishikori, who made 30 unforced errors against just 10 winners, suffered his sixth consecutive loss in meetings with Djokovic, who leads their career rivalry 7-2. Nishikori fell to 2-10 all-time against world number ones.It was a tough match, Nishikori said. Playing Novak is always a great challenge for me.Djokovic, who didnt drop a set at Miami, broke Nishikori in four of his first five service games to seize command. The Serb began his 19th final in 21 events with an exchange of breaks, then traded breaks in the sixth and seventh games, backhand winners sealing the win for each. But Nishikori miss-hit a backhand to hand Djokovic a break in the eighth game and the defending champion held at love to take the opening set after 34 minutes.Nishikori stumbled to start the second set, ending a 33-shot rally with a wide backhand to give Djokovic a break point and then handing him the lead by spraying a backhand volley wide. After Nishikori saved a break point and held to pull within 4-3, he had a trainer treat his left knee before resuming. Djokovic held for 5-3 and then broke for the title, taking advantage on his third match point when Nishikori hit a forehand long to end it after 86 minutes. As part of his victory celebration, Djokovic kissed his left hand and patted it on the court several times.I certainly hope the love affair continues in the years to come, Djokovic said. While Nishikori was in only his second career ATP Masters final, after Madrid in 2014, Djokovic was in his 11th consecutive such final, improving his record in the elite events to 56-2.Nishikori, 26, failed in his bid to become the first Asian player to claim an ATP Masters title and missed a chance at his 12th career ATP crown.

Football: Martial the match-winner as United honour Charlton

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Anthony Martial scored the only goal of the game as Manchester United beat Everton 1-0 in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Sunday to climb within a point of fourth-placed local rivals Manchester City. Martials 54th-minute strike gave the French striker his 13th goal of the season and helped United celebrate the fact that Old Traffords south stand had been renamed in honour of club great Bobby Charlton in fine fashion. Victory kept alive United boss Louis van Gaals hopes of qualifying for the Champions League -- the top four clubs in England get a spot -- and thus satisfying the minimum demand on an Old Trafford manager. This was Uniteds fourth successive home win, a feat they managed for the first time since a six-match streak in April last year.United have now won four of their last five league games, including the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.Everton, as befits a side with a better away record than at Goodison Park, began with clear attacking intent and the United defence had to be on its toes to deal with Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku.Barkley was a lively influence and in the 12th minute he found Gerard Deulofeu on the right, the Belgian cutting into the penalty area past two tackles without being able to have a clear shot before Matteo Darmian cleared the danger.Everton continued to delight their travelling contingent with their attacking style, and Leighton Baines saw one of his trademark free kicks diverted for a corner as the first half approached the halfway mark.Lukaku finally had a glimpse of a chance when England centre-half Chris Smalling slipped but United goalkeeper David de Gea had anticipated the danger and won the race to hack clear.Daley Blind once more won a one-on-one duel with Lukaku as the Belgian threatened to break away, while at the other end right back Seamus Coleman had to be precision-perfect with a challenge to deny the raiding Marcos Rojo in Evertons penalty area.Uniteds measured build-up does not always please their fans, but a patient passing move almost resulted in the breakthrough only for defender John Stones to halt Martial in the area.Everton resumed after half-time in determined mood, and Blind did well to block Lukakus effort in the area when Baines threaded a pass through to the Belgian with his back to goal. However, it was Martial who broke the deadlock when he got on the end of a delightful passing move that started with Juan Mata, was enhanced by a neat backheel by Marcus Rashford and completed by the striker, who converted at the far post when Coleman failed to connect with an attempted clearance. It was Manchester Uniteds 1,000th home goal in the Premier League.Everton, stung into a reaction, responded almost immediately when captain Phil Jagielka headed a corner against the bar but, as the match wore on, United closed out the game.

Football: Captain Morgan sends Leicester seven points clear

Posted:

LEICESTER (AFP) - Leicester City captain Wes Morgan scored his first goal in almost a year as the Premier League title-chasers edged Southampton 1-0 on Sunday to establish a potentially decisive seven-point lead.Tottenham Hotspurs 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Saturday had given Claudio Ranieris men an opportunity to strengthen their grip on first place and they duly took it courtesy of Morgans 38th-minute header. It was Leicesters fifth 1-0 victory in six matches and left the east Midlands club needing 12 points from their final six games to claim the first top-flight title in their 132-year history.Everyone is expecting something more for us and we are in the cloud, but we have to keep concentrating, said Leicester manager Ranieri.I dont want to think about champions. I want to focus on the match. There is a chance for us to be champions this season, but we have to be professional.Leicester were bottom of the table a year ago, but are now within sight of one of the most sensational underdog triumphs in world football history.Meanwhile, Southampton manager Ronald Koeman, whose side remain seventh, was left to rue two penalty appeals for handball in each half that were turned away by referee Michael Oliver. This is a big match, Koeman said. It is about the Premier League title and our ambitions to play in Europe.I dont say they dont deserve the victory, that they dont fight and have amazing spirit, but if it is a penalty and a red card, they dont win. With chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha laying on free doughnuts and bottles of beer for home fans to mark his birthday and Leicester City Champions 2016 scarves for sale on the walk to the ground, the atmosphere could barely have been more festive at a sun-soaked King Power Stadium. In a bid to counter Leicesters two-pronged strike-force of Jamie Vardy and Shinji Okazaki, Southampton deployed a back three and while the home side made the early running, the clearest opportunities of the first half fell to the visitors.Their best chance saw Graziano Pelle free Sadio Mane, who rounded Kasper Schmeichel and shot, only for the ball to strike Danny Simpsons right forearm as he came across to cover the vacant goal.Southampton appealed for a penalty, but the right-backs arm had remained close to his body so referee Oliver waved play on.Pelle also headed over from a Cedric Soares cross, while Jose Fonte fully extended Schmeichel with a rising drive from 25 yards and Jordie Clasie shot narrowly over after outmuscling Riyad Mahrez. But with Southampton poised to poop the party, Leicester struck, Christian Fuchs guiding a cross into the box from the left flank and Morgan outjumping Clasie to plant a captains header inside the left-hand post.Dusan Tadic replaced Matt Targett at half-time for Southampton, who changed to a 4-2-3-1 system, but they were almost undone within seconds of the restart, with Victor Wanyama booked for putting an arm in Vardys face as the England striker looked to burst clear.Just past the hour, it took a superb one-handed stop from Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster to prevent Fonte steering Danny Drinkwaters cross into his own net.Ten minutes later Forster was at it again, parrying from right on the goal-line after Simpson took aim at a gaping goal from Vardys low cross.Koeman had seen his side come from 2-0 down to beat Liverpool 3-2 in their previous game and he threw caution to the wind by sending on Charlie Austin and James Ward-Prowse for Clasie and Steven Davis.Seconds after coming on Austin had a strong penalty appeal when his shot struck Robert Huths outstretched left hand, but to the frustration of Southampton -- and Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester City -- Oliver was again unmoved.Vardy might have settled the home nerves late on, only for Forster to repel his prodded effort, but it mattered not.

Football: FIFA officials, Platini, Messi named in secret offshore files

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Disgraced FIFA officials, suspended UEFA chief Michel Platini and Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi were amongst the names found Sunday in leaked documents which reveal offshore financial dealings. The Panama Papers claim the law firm of a FIFA ethics watchdog had business relationships with three men recently indicted in footballs global corruption scandal.Documents also bring to light how some players use offshore companies to bank money from image rights deals. The findings are the result a year-long investigation by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), the German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung and other media outlets. The records show that a law firm belonging to Juan Pedro Damiani, a member of FIFAs Independent Ethics Committee, did work for offshore companies linked to Eugenio Figueredo, a former FIFA vice president who has been indicted in the US on wire fraud and money laundering charges. The records do not show illegal conduct by Damiani or his law firm. But they do raise new questions for Damiani and FIFA, said the report issued by the ICIJ.A spokesman for the ethics panel told the ICIJ that Damiani had informed the committee in March that he has had business ties to Figueredo. However, the panel has launched an investigation into Damianis relationship with Figueredo.Damiani told the ICIJ, through a spokesperson, that he wasnt authorised to make statements while officials in Uruguay are investigating allegations of corruption related to FIFA. He added, however, that he taken a lead in reporting corrupt practices within FIFA to Uruguayan authorities and to the soccer organisations ethics committee, said the report. The 11 million leaked records from the files of Mossack Fonseca, a Panama-based law firm, include the names of 20 high-profile footballers. The most high-profile of all is Argentina and Barcelona star Messi.Messi and his father Jorge are already due to stand trial in May charged with tax fraud for allegedly failing to declare 4.16 million euros ($4.69 million) in taxes related to his image rights between 2007 and 2009 through front companies in Belize and Uruguay. The pair are accused of ceding the players image rights to the companies in order to avoid declaring money made from lucrative deals with sponsors in Spain. Both men deny any wrongdoing. The ICIJ said the documents also allege that Platini turned to Mossack Fonseca to help him administer an offshore company created in Panama in 2007.Platini is serving a six-year ban from all football-related activity for an ethics breach after former FIFA president Sepp Blatter approved a $2 million payment to the Frenchman in 2011 for consultancy work done without a contract a decade earlier.Late Sunday, Platinis communications service told AFP that his entire financial records and properties had been made known to the Swiss authorities since 2007.It was made clear that any defamatory comments published could lead to legal action.

Golf: Unheralded Herman trumps Stenson to win first PGA title in Houston

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Journeyman Jim Herman held off top 10 players Henrik Stenson and Dustin Johnson to win his first US PGA Tour title at the Houston Open on Sunday and book a Masters berth.Herman, a 38-year-old who was encouraged by Donald Trump to keep pursuing his PGA Tour dream, had five birdies in a four-under 68 -- including a spectacular chip-in from thick hillside rough at 16 that gave him a one-stroke lead he wouldnt relinquish.Sorry for the tears, but Im really happy, Herman told a post-round interviewer having parred the last for the win after an agonizing wait on the 18th tee.His 15-under total of 273 gave him the narrow triumph over Stenson, the world number seven from Sweden who endured another in a long line of near-misses worldwide since he won the European Tours season-ending World Tour Championship in 2014.In a back-and-forth battle, Stenson had briefly taken the lead with a birdie at 13 and was tied for the lead after a birdie at 15.He had five birdies in a four-under 68 for 274, but narrowly missed an 18-foot birdie attempt at the last that would have at least put him in a playoff.Hermans victory was his first in 106 starts on the PGA Tour. He was working as a pro at one of Trumps golf courses when the property tycoon turned US presidential hopeful encouraged him to keep pushing his competitive career. Now hes headed to the first major of the year at Augusta National.Never thought it was possible, said Herman, who wears a Trump logo on his shirt.Johnson, ranked ninth in the world, had six birdies to counter a bogey and a double-bogey in a 69 for 275.He was one shot in front of Spains Rafa Cabrera Bello, whose sparkling seven-under 65 included five birdies and an eagle at the par-four 12th -- where his 306-yard tee shot left him a five-foot putt. For a few moments it looked like Jordan Spieth would mount a challenge as the world number two got off to a hot start in his bid to build momentum heading into his Masters title defence at Augusta National next week. With renewed rhythm on the greens the 22-year-old Texan birdied five of his first seven holes to charge up the leaderboard, a run that included a 45-footer at the fifth. But he bogeyed three of his next four, failing to get up and down from the greenside rough at the tough par-three-ninth before poor shots at 11 and 12 -- a second shot to the bank of the water hazard at 11 and a driver into the water at 12 -- cost him two more strokes and after two more birdies he closed with a double-bogey at 18, where he was in the water again.Spieth signed for a two-under 70 that left him tied for 13th on 280 in a group that also included five-time major winner Phil Mickelson.

Formula One: Nico Rosberg wins Bahrain Grand Prix

Posted:

MANAMA (AFP) - Nico Rosberg took full advantage of misfortunes to his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton and Ferraris Sebastian Vettel to claim an emphatic victory in the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday. With Vettels Ferrari engine packing up on the warm-up lap Rosberg made a fine start to lead while Hamilton, slow off the grid from his 51st pole position, was the victim of a Turn One collision with Valtteri Bottass Williams and fell to eighth. As Rosberg cruised clear to control the contest and claim his second win of the season, fifth in succession and 16th of his career, Hamilton, in a damaged car, mounted a fightback to finish third behind Kimi Raikkonen in a Ferrari, 10 seconds adrift of Rosberg. This has been an awesome weekend for me, and it is awesome to get another win said 30-year-old Rosberg, clearly delighted to have a 17-points lead over Hamilton after just two races. The key was the start for me, the German added.I had a great getaway and then, from there, I was just trying to control the race.He added that he was not taking the title race too seriously - just yet. This is only two races out of 21 and there is a long way to go.Rosbergs triumph maintained his supremacy over Hamilton since the Englishman claimed his third drivers world title in Texas last year, a streak that has seen him build up the momentum for a convincing bid for his first championship.Hamilton, however, played down the setback and said there was no connection between the two first corner incidents that have ruined his chances of reversing that run so far this season.I think they are two separate incidents, but equally painful - perhaps today more painful. Again, for me, it was damage limitation and I was glad to get up there and score some points.Congratulations to Nico, but I guess he had a pretty quiet race I am just glad that I didnt drop more points here. I feel very chilled about the situation, to be honest. We were hoping for a Safety Car in the closing laps of the race. I had so much damage on the car that I couldnt keep up and fight with Kimi (Raikkonen). The two Mercedes drivers had started from their eighth successive front row lockout on the grid ahead of the Ferraris of four-time champion Vettel and Raikkonen.Vettel, expected to produce a challenge to the Mercedes domination, failed to make the start for the first time in his career after a pre-race engine failure and it was left to Raikkonen to produce his customary charging race to claim second. Its not too bad to finish second, he said. I had a bad start and we did what we could. I think we will take second today from this race.Vettel said he was not sure of what caused his engine failure. I dont know why it happened, it was very unexpected, he said. His absence and Hamiltons clash with Bottass Williams took much of the heat out of the contest and allowed Rosberg a comfortable drive to 25 more points. He now has 50 to Hamiltons 33.Bottas, who was given a drive-through penalty by the stewards for his part in the crash, finished ninth behind his Williams team-mate Brazilian Felipe Massa. He said: I was braking as hard as I could, but I went a bit sideways and we hit...Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth for Red Bull, for the second race in succession, ahead of Romain Grosjean, who secured a fine fifth for the new American Haas team, and sixth placed Dutch teenager Max Verstappen of Toro Rosso.Daniil Kvyat finished seventh in the second Red Bull ahead of Brazilian Felipe Massa of Williams, Finn Valtteri Bottas in the second Williams and Belgian debutant Stoffel Vandoorne who took a point in his first race with McLaren. To score a point in my first race is amazing, said Vandoorne, who raced only because two-time champion Fernando Alonso failed a medical test on Thursday. It has felt really great for me all weekend....

Motorcycling: Marquez spoils Rossi anniversary party in Argentina

Posted:

TERMAS DE RIO HONDO (AFP) - World champion Marc Marquez spoilt Valentino Rossis anniversary celebrations with success from pole in the Grand Prix of Argentina on Sunday.Nine-time champion Rossi lined up on his Yamaha in second hoping to mark 20 years as a world championship rider with a second successive victory at the Rio Honda track. But Marquez spiked the 37-year-olds quest as the Spaniard opened his 2016 account at the second attempt.Rossi raced in second until the Ducatis of Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone sneaked past the Italian veteran with two laps to go.With fourth place looming, the motorcycling legend then received a massive slice of good fortune as the Ducati pair touched and crashed out on the final bend to leave him with a fortuitous runner-up spot on his landmark weekend.Despite missing out on the win Rossi was all smiles at making his first podium of the year. With an ongoing investigation into tyre safety after a Michelin tyre delaminated in qualifying the race was shortened to 20 laps with riders having to switch bikes midway through. And Rossi said he had struggled after the change of machine. On the first bike I was fast, I could fight with Marquez and start to have fun. But with the second bike I never felt the same. Then the two Ducatis arrive, and without them touching I couldnt have made the podium.Dovizioso, second last year, had led early on from Rossi until Marquez nipped past to take control on lap three.Jorge Lorenzo, aiming to follow up his win in the opening race in Qatar a fortnight ago, crashed out on lap five, his Yamaha sliding from underneath him on bend one.Marquez emerged from the change of machine in front of Rossi and on target to get his title defence up and running at the second attempt. The two-time world champion, who overcame a crash-hit session to grab pole, won at the Rio Honda track in 2014.With rain holding off despite threatening black clouds he held his nerve to win from Rossi with Marquez Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa in third.Thankfully Marquez did a better job of staying on his bike than he did on the podium, falling backwards off it in his elation at the trophy ceremony.Of his 25th grand prix win Marquez, who now leads the championship standings, said: It was difficult.Rossi tried to push me on every lap and it was tough because there was not much difference between the bikes.Earlier, Frances world champion Johann Zarco won the Moto 2 race to make up for his disappointing start to the season, a low key 12th in Qatar.Zarco recorded his ninth success at this level by beating Briton Sam Lowes with Germanys Jonas Folger in third.Malaysian 17-year-old Khairul Idham Pawi, on a Honda, claimed his first career win with victory in the Moto3 race.Starting on the third row, Pawi conquered a treacherous, wet track to win by a huge 26 seconds from Spains Jorge Navarro on another Honda and pole-sitter Brad Binder of South Africa on a KTM.

Huge tax leak exposes Putin aides, world leaders, stars

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - A massive leak of 11.5 million tax documents on Sunday exposed the secret offshore dealings of aides to Russian president Vladimir Putin, world leaders and celebrities including Barcelona forward Lionel Messi. An investigation into the documents by more than 100 media groups, described as one of the largest such probes in history, revealed the hidden offshore dealings in the assets of around 140 political figures -- including 12 current or former heads of state. The vast stash of records was obtained from an anonymous source by German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung and shared with media worldwide by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).The documents, from around 214,000 offshore entities, came from Mossack Fonseca, a Panama-based law firm with offices in more than 35 countries.Though most of the alleged dealings are said by the ICIJ to be legal, they are likely to have a serious political impact on many of those named.ICIJ director Gerard Ryle said the documents covered the day-to-day business at Mossack Fonseca over the past 40 years.I think the leak will prove to be probably the biggest blow the offshore world has ever taken because of the extent of the documents, he said.Among the main claims of the ICIJ investigations:-- Close associates of Putin, who is not himself named in the documents, secretly shuffled as much as $2 billion through banks and shadow companies, the ICIJ said.-- The files identified offshore companies linked to the family of Chinese President Xi Jinping, who has led a tough anti-corruption campaign in his country, the ICIJ said.-- In Iceland, the files show Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson and his wife secretly owned millions of dollars of investment in his countrys banks during the financial crisis through an offshore company.-- The law firm of a member of FIFAs ethics committee, Juan Pedro Damiani, had business ties with three men indicted in corruption scandal: former FIFA vice president Eugenio Figueredo, as well as Hugo Jinkis and his son Mariano, who were accused of paying bribes to win soccer broadcast rights in Latin America.-- Argentine football great Messi and his father owned a Panama company, Mega Star Enterprises Inc., a shell company that had previously not come up in Spanish investigations into the father and sons tax affairs. Also in the world of football, Francetv Info named UEFA president Michel Platini as the beneficiary of a Panama-based tax company, adding however that no illegal activity was alleged.Platinis communications service said in a statement sent to AFP that all of his accounts and assets are known to the tax authorities in Switzerland, where he has been a tax resident since 2007.Icelands Gunnlaugsson is expected to face a no-confidence vote this week over allegations he used a secret offshore firm called Wintris Inc. to hide millions of dollars in the British Virgin Islands.Visibly irritated, the premier refused to answer reporters questions during an interview broadcast on Swedish television Sunday evening.I have never hidden assets, Gunnlaugsson told a journalist from the Swedish SVT channel before leaving the room. His spokesman insisted he and his wife have scrupulously followed the law.At least 33 people and companies listed in the documents were blacklisted by the US government for wrongdoing, such as North Korea and Iran, as well as Lebanons group Hezbollah, the ICIJ said. The leaked data, covering 1975 to the end of last year, provides what the ICIJ described as a never-before-seen view inside the offshore world. The massive leak of documents recalls Wikileaks exploits of 2010 -- which included the release of 500,000 secret military files on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and 250,000 diplomatic cables, and infuriated the US.However, in terms of size, the Panama Papers is likely the biggest leak of inside information in history, according to ICIJ.It is equally likely to be one of the most explosive in the nature of its revelations, the group added.Names also figuring in the leak included the president of Ukraine and the king of Saudi Arabia, the ICIJ statement said. The documents show that banks, law firms and other offshore players often fail to follow legal requirements to make sure clients are not involved in criminal enterprises, tax dodging or political corruption, the ICIJ said on its website. The files show that these fixers and middlemen protect themselves and their clients by concealing suspect transactions. In some instances, they work to head off official investigations by backdating and destroying documents, it added. These findings show how deeply ingrained harmful practices and criminality are in the offshore world, said Gabriel Zucman, an economist at the US-based University of California, Berkeley, cited by the consortium. The leaked documents were reviewed by a team of more than 370 reporters from over 70 countries, according to the ICIJ.The BBC cited Mossack Fonseca as saying it had operated beyond reproach for 40 years and had never been charged with any criminal wrongdoing. It was not immediately clear who was the original source of the leaked documents.

West Indies board apologises for Sammy's 'inappropriate' remarks

LONDON (AFP) - The West Indies Cricket Board publicly reprimanded captain Darren Sammy by apologising for his outspoken attack on Caribbean administrators after he led the team to victory over England in Sundays World Twenty20 final in Kolkata.Sammy, in a reference to the lengthy and bitter pay dispute between players and officials that had put the West Indies World Twenty20 participation in doubt, used a post-match interview following the four-wicket win at Eden Gardens to say his team felt disrespected by our board. He added: Mark Nicholas (the English commentator and former Hampshire captain) described us as a team with no brains. All these things before the tournament just brought this team together. We had a new manager in Rawle Lewis, who has never managed a team before. We had no uniforms, no printing, said Sammy after Carlos Brathwaite struck four straight sixes in the last over to see the West Indies to a second World Twenty20 title after their 2012 success. The trouble he went through to just get us in this uniform. I got to give credit to entire team here. It was us in our own little circle and we dedicate this win to all fans in Caribbean.Several hours later, in a statement curiously headlined WICB President had high praises for World Twenty20 Organisers, the sting came lower down. The President (Whycliffe Dave Cameron) would like to however apologise for what could be deemed inappropriate, comments made by the West Indies male captain, Darren Sammy in a post-match interview and would like to apologize on behalf of the WICB, to the millions of fans who witnessed (sic). The President has pledged to enquire the reason and will have the matter addressed.

KOLKATA (AFP) - An emotional Darren Sammy launched a passionate outburst against the West Indies cricket board (WICB) following his sides historic World Twenty20 title triumph over England in Kolkata on Sunday.Carlos Brathwaite hit four successive sixes in the last over as the Windies stunned England, with skipper Sammy saying his side had lifted the trophy in spite of his countrys board. We had lots of issues, people wondered whether we would play this tournament, Sammy said after the four-wicket win, secured with just two balls to spare at the Eden Gardens stadium. We felt disrespected by our board. Mark Nicholas (the English commentator) described us as a team with no brains. All these things before the tournament just brought this team together.I want to really thank these 15 men. The ability to put all that adversity aside and to play this type of cricket in front of such passionate fans is just tremendous, the captain added. The Caribbean teams involvement in the tournament had been in doubt because of a dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) over pay before an eleventh-hour agreement was struck.Sammy said he had been touched by a good luck message the team had received from Grenada Prime Minister Keith Mitchell hours before the final as he took another swipe at the WICB.I really want to thank him. He sent a very inspiring message for the team this morning and Im yet to hear from our own cricket board.Thats very disappointing, added the 32-year-old.Sammy went on to lay out the extent to which his squad had been unprepared for a tilt at a second World T20 title to add to the one they clinched in 2012.We had a new manager in Rawle Lewis, who has never managed a team before. We had no uniforms, no printing, said the all-rounder.The trouble he went through to just get us in this uniform. I got to give credit to entire team here. It was us in our own little circle and we dedicate this win to all fans in Caribbean, he added. The West Indies looked dead and buried as they went into the final over needing 19 runs to win before Brathwaite hit four sixes off Ben Stokes first four deliveries.A classy and nerveless unbeaten 85 by Marlon Samuels anchored the Windies successful run chase after openers Johnson Charles was out for one and Chris Gayle made only four. When Lendl Simmons, batting at number four, went for nought, it looked like the Windies had little hope of successfully chasing Englands 155 for nine. But Samuels knock, coupled with a 25 by Dwayne Bravo and 34 not out from Brathwaite spurred the Windies to finish on 161-6 after 19.4 overs. An ecstatic Windies danced to Bravos single Champion as they celebrated a hat-trick of titles following the win in the womens final earlier in the day and the under-19 boys back in February, We never gave up believing. Its something we will cherish for a long time, said Sammy.
