ITF president says hearing scheduled in Sharapova case

LAUSANNE (AP) - A disciplinary hearing has been scheduled in Maria Sharapovas doping case, with a ruling possible before Wimbledon starts.International Tennis Federation president David Haggerty said Wednesday that its doping cases typically take two to three months to process. That could deliver a verdict in June.Haggerty said he has not been told details by the federations anti-doping tribunal, including when and where the hearing will be held.Sharapova was provisionally suspended after announcing on March 8 that she tested positive for meldonium at the Australian Open in January. The Russian said she had been prescribed the blood-flow boosting drug since 2006, and had been unaware the World Anti-Doping Agency had prohibited its use from Jan. 1.Russian officials want Sharapova to play at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in August.Sharapova will not have her provisional ban lifted pending the verdict, despite WADA publishing new guidelines to sports bodies last week amid uncertainty over how long meldonium remains in an athletes body. Some athletes among nearly 200 who have tested positive claim they had not taken the drug this year.Haggerty said Sharapovas case will continue to he heard. For her, given her levels (of meldonium), it is not even a question, incoming WADA director general Olivier Niggli told The Associated Press this week.Elected as ITF president last year, Haggerty said the governing body and its integrity unit will be more transparent in communicating about cases. On Tuesday, the ITF announced a 10-year ban for a Croatian umpire who continued to work, including at the 2015 U.S. Open, while he was serving a one-year suspension which was never publicly disclosed. We dont always get things 100 percent but you learn through this, Haggerty said in a briefing on the sidelines of the SportAccord conference. On potential match-fixing cases, the Tennis Integrity Unit received more than 40 alerts of suspicious betting patterns in matches played in the first three months this year, Haggerty said.Haggerty is due in Rio on May 4 to assess Olympic preparations which are in progress, but not finished, including court surfaces and lighting at the Olympic Park venue. If you have a night session and you dont have lights, you have a problem, the American official said. They are being installed.

Football: Suarez hits four, Barca bounce back with 8-0 rout

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelona bounced back from their worst run of La Liga defeats for 13 years in emphatic fashion as Luis Suarez scored four in an 8-0 thrashing of Deportivo la Coruna on Wednesday.Ivan Rakitic, Lionel Messi, Marc Bartra and Neymar were also on target as Barca reasserted their control on the Spanish title race.Victory moved Barca back three points ahead of Atletico Madrid and four clear of third-placed Real Madrid with both sides from the capital in action later on Wednesday against Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal respectively.Barca had taken just one point from their last possible 12 in the league and been dumped out of the Champions League amidst a run of just one win in six games that threatened to derail their season. However, they remain in control of their own fate and few would bet against them winning their last four games and claiming a 24th Liga title after a performance as good as any in the 39-game unbeaten run they enjoyed prior to losing at home to Real Madrid earlier his month.Suarez settled the visitors nerves after just 11 minutes when he outmuscled Sidnei to volley home the opener despite the hosts desperate appeals for a foul.Deportivo should have hit back immediately as Celso Borges shot meekly at Claudio Bravo with just the Chilean international to beat.Borges then had an even better opportunity as he rounded Bravo, but Bartra got back to block his effort from point-blank range before Oriol Riera fired the follow-up over.Suarez gave Barca the cushion they desired when he latched onto Messis sumptuous through ball to slot low past Manu. The Uruguayan should have had a first-half hat-trick but he failed to turn home Alvess fine cross from two yards out moments later.Suarez made amends as he turned provider for Barcas third just after the break when his cross to the back post was volleyed home emphatically by Rakitic.Messi created the fourth with another defence splitting pass and Suarez kept his composure to seal his sixth hat-trick of a prolific season. The relief amongst the Barca players was palpable as they seemed to click back into the form that had them set for a second consecutive treble before their sudden collapse in the previous six games.Suarez was gifted his fourth of the night from Neymars unselfish cross despite Laure blocking his initial attempt on the line for his 49th goal of the season. The former Liverpool striker then added a second assist to his four-goal haul as Barca again tore the Deportivo defence apart and his cut-back was gratefully tapped home by Messi.Bartra joined the party as he galloped forward from his own half without facing a single strong Deportivo challenge before firing into the far corner. And Neymar completed a perfect night for the Spanish champions when he tapped home at the far post from Suarezs third assist of a spectacular display for his first goal in six games.

Real Madrid stroll to victory against Villarreal

Posted:

MADRID (Agencies) - Real Madrid never looked in danger of losing points in front of a vociferous Santiago Bernabeu crowd, as the title hopefuls ran out 3-0 winners over lacklustre Villarreal. Karim Benzema opened the scoring late in the first half, netting for the fourth league game in a row, before further strikes from Lucas Vazquez and Luka Modric made it a comfortable victory in the second period. Cristiano Ronaldo left the field in stoppage time in some discomfort to spark injury fears on an otherwise positive evening for Madrid.Barcas stunning loss of form in recent weeks allowed Zinedine Zidanes side to close to within one point of the summit, but the pressure was asserted back onto Madrid as the defending champions demolished Deportivo La Coruna 8-0 before kick-off at the Santiago Bernabeu.Atleticos subsequent 1-0 triumph at Athletic Bilbao further heightened the need for Madrid to respond in kind here, and they managed to do just that to keep the gap to the leading duo to one point with four matches remaining.Victory was Madrids eighth in succession in the league since their derby loss to Atletico in February as they kept their title hopes alive and maintained their momentum ahead of next weeks Champions League semi-final first leg against Manchester City.Villarreal, who are into the last four of the Europa League, will hope to join Madrid in Europes premier club competition next season - Marcelinos side occupy the final qualification berth with a six-point gap to fifth-placed Athletic despite a second consecutive defeat.

Darmian shines as Manchester United beat Palace 2-0

Posted:

LONDON (Agencies) - An inspired Matteo Darmian scored his first goal for Manchester United and set up another as Louis van Gaals side kept alive their hopes of a top-four finish with a 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday.Darmian unleashed a screaming volley with his weaker left foot early in the second half, after Palace defender Damien Delaney turned the Italy fullbacks sharp low cross into his own net in the fifth minute.Playing in an adventurous formation with Wayne Rooney in a deeper role behind the front four, United were denied more goals by a string of superb saves by visiting goalkeeper Julian Speroni. The 36-year-old Argentine kept out a barrage of stinging shots from Anthony Martial, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Rooney, but was powerless to stop Delaneys own goal and Darmians thunderbolt which went in off the post.In other games Liverpool maintained their stranglehold over Everton in the Merseyside derby with a one-sided stroll against their local rivals who had Ramiro Funes Mori sent off for a horror-tackle in the second half.Liverpool were never under any serious or sustained pressure and scored twice late in the first half through Divock Origi and Mamadou Sakho, both from James Milner crosses, before Daniel Sturridge came off the bench to make it 3-0 and Philippe Coutinho finished off the rout. Also a penalty double from Mark Noble helped West Ham United complete a comfortable 3-1 win over Watford that kept their pursuit of European football firmly on track.Andy Carroll, who has hit a purple patch at the perfect time as he bids to win a spot in Roy Hodgsons England squad for Euro 2016, hit his sixth goal in last five league games with an awkward looking volley to open the scoring after 11 minutes.Noble scored twice from the penalty spot either side of halftime before Sebastian Proedl swept home after 64 minutes to reduce the deficit. Any hope of a late fightback, however, was effectively snuffed out when Troy Deeneys late penalty for the visitors was saved.

Origi tees Liverpool up for rout of Everton

Posted:

LONDON (Agencies) - Liverpool humiliated 10-man Everton in the 226th Merseyside derby as goals from Divock Origi, Mamadou Sakho, Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho secured a 4-0 victory on Wednesday. The two first-half headers from Origi and Sakho were brilliantly taken in an entertaining clash that saw Evertons woeful record at Anfield continue, a situation not helped by Ramiro Funes Moris straight red card for a dreadful tackle on Origi in the 50th minute.Shortly after, Sturridge slotted past Joel Robles to add a third goal for the home side before Coutinhos wonderful strike with 14 minutes left capped off another woeful Everton defensive display.Liverpool climbed one place to seventh in the Premier League, while Everton, without a win in seven games, remain 11th.The omens were not good for Everton –- and so it was to prove -- as Anfield has not been a successful venue for them in recent years, with the club failing to win on the other side of Stanley Park since 1999.With an FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United to follow on Saturday, it must have been tempting for Everton manager Roberto Martinez to rest his key players, but he went all-out as the likes of Leighton Baines, Aaron Lennon and Gareth Barry returned to his starting XI.Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp more than matched Martinez, changing nine players from the win over Bournemouth at the weekend, and most notably he opted to start the match with the in-form Origi, rather than Sturridge, up front. In the end, both players made their mark in a game where Liverpool were simply too good for their opponents. The match had a typically boisterous opening as both sides tried to make their mark on the occasion.Liverpool had the first real chance as Adam Lallana squandered a glorious chance after just five minutes.A woeful Bryan Oviedo pass went skywards and landed at the feet of Coutinho, who put Lallana clean through on goal, but Everton goalkeeper Robles did superbly to stand his ground and block the midfielders effort.Liverpool continued to press the visitors as Everton seemed determined to hit them on the counter-attack rather than take the game to the home side.A Kevin Mirallas effort from 20 yards curled over the crossbar as Everton finally threatened and he then blazed over from the same distance soon after. The first goal could conceivably have come from either side as last-ditch tackles were required from both teams in order to keep it goalless.Firstly, Sakho did brilliantly to thwart Romelu Lukaku from just four yards out, before John Stones threw himself in the way of Lallana at the other end.Everton then had Robles to thank again as Roberto Firminos effort cannoned back off his legs. But Liverpool inched their way into a dominant position as they started to hold onto the ball for longer periods and after 43 minutes they finally got a deserved goal.James Milner bided his time on the right wing and then delivered a perfect left-foot cross that Origi powerfully nodded past Robles. The goal sent Anfield crazy and Sakho raised the volume level further in first-half injury time after Milner had again made all the difference, but this time from the left.Evertons defence again stood still, allowing Milner to reach the byline and cross, and Sakhos powerful header gave Robles no chance.Five minutes after the re-start, Funes Mori lunged in on Origi and caught him high on the ankle, leading to his instant dismissal.Liverpool never looked back as Sturridge used the extra space to beat Robles from eight yards out.It got worse for Everton as Coutinho rifled home from the edge of the box and although there were no more goals, the scoreline was brutal enough to ensure that the bragging rights comprehensively went to the home side.

Oil prices surge 4% on falling US output

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - World oil prices jumped four per cent on Wednesday on news of another fall in US crude production that the market appeared to take as a sign of tightening supplies.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for delivery in May surged US$1.55 (3.8 per cent) to US$42.63 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent North Sea crude for June delivery, the European benchmark, advanced US$1.77 (4.0 per cent) to US$45.80 a barrel. The market seems to be looking forward, with a view of falling US production levels and the idea that were going to continue to see increased demand globally, said Gene McGillian of Tradition Energy.US oil output fell again last week as weak prices and brimming stockpiles hit domestic producers, the US Energy Information Agency reported Wednesday.Crude production fell by 24,000 barrels in the week ending April 15 to 8.95 million barrels a day. It was the second straight week below the nine million barrel a day threshold and more than 600,000 barrels below the mid-2015 peak output. The data came days after a meeting on the oversupplied market between OPEC and non-OPEC producers, including Russia but not the United States, failed to produce an agreement on capping production. The data showed that even if other producers are not reacting to the crash in crude prices, US drillers are.The EIA forecasts US production to fall steadily to average 8.6 million barrels a day this year, down by 800,000 barrels from last year, and 8.0 million barrels a day in 2017.Despite the lower output, the EIA said Wednesday that US commercial stockpiles of crude remained at near-record levels. Stockpiles rose by 2.1 million barrels last week to 538.6 million barrels.Oil prices earlier had fallen after oil industry workers in Kuwait called off a strike that began Sunday and had slashed crude and natural gas production by more than half. Pre-strike production was seen returning in three days. The strike will have put the global market into a near balance for a week, but this will turn out to have only been a drill rather than the larger rebalancing that the oil bulls are banking on, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures.

Euro dips ahead of ECB meeting

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro weakened on Wednesday in a cautious market on the eve of the European Central Bank meeting, despite expectations there would be no major changes to its ultra-easy monetary policy. The euro slipped against the dollar, after beginning the day higher, but trading in the currency pair remained rangebound. Around 2100 GMT, the euro bought US$1.1296, down from US$1.1359 at the same time Tuesday.Traders anticipated the ECB would stay the course after announcing big easing measures at its Mar 10 meeting. But all eyes will be on the post-meeting news conference looking for signals that more may be needed to boost growth in the 19-nation eurozone.Even though ECB President Mario Draghi appears to have unintentionally put a floor on interest rates, a more aggressive dovish pledge to push monetary policy further into uncharted territory may dampen the appeal of the single-currency, said David Song at DailyFX.The shared currency edged lower against the yen, while the dollar advanced a bit, to 109.81 yen from 109.20.Analysts said the greenback gained a slight bump-up from news of a March surge in US existing-home sales. In other currency news, the US Treasury named one-time slave turned abolitionist Harriet Tubman as the new face of the US$20 banknote, the first time an African American has featured on US currency. But the change will not take place before 2020.
