UN calls for accountability after Yemen funeral attack Posted: PARIS (AFP) - The United Nations on Monday called for swift action to bring to justice the perpetrators of air strikes on a funeral ceremony in the Yemeni capital that killed more than 140 people.Saturdays strikes were blamed by the Shiite Huthi rebels who control Sanaa on a Saudi-led coalition which has battled them since March 2015. We must do everything possible to ensure the authors of these heinous attacks face justice, UN envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said in Paris after talks with French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault. The envoy said the Saudi-led coalition must publish the results of its probe into the strikes, which also injured more than 525 people. We need to have the results of the investigation under way very quickly, he said.UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the air strikes on a funeral ceremony was a heartless attack on civilians and an outrageous violation of international humanitarian law.He said an independent body to probe rights violations in Yemen must be set up. There must be accountability for the appalling conduct of this entire war, Ban told reporters. The attack was among the deadliest in Yemen since the Riyadh-led alliance launched its aerial campaign against Iran-backed Huthi rebels last year. The coalition, which initially denied any involvement, said Sunday it would investigate the incident, after the US said it was reviewing support for the alliance. The coalition will immediately investigate this case along with... experts from the United States who participated in previous investigations, it said. The alliance was already under intense international scrutiny over the alleged civilian death toll in its Yemen operations. The Huthis swept into Sanaa in September 2014 and advanced across much of Yemen, prompting the coalition to intervene in support of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi. More than 6,700 people -- almost two-thirds of them civilians -- have been killed and at least three million displaced the coalition launched military operations in Yemen, according to the United Nations.UN mediated peace talks between rebels and pro-government factions collapsed in August, and fighting has flared across much of the country since then. The UN envoy has been trying to revive negotiations but analysts said the air strikes made the prospects for peace in the impoverished Arabian Peninsula country more remote. Chances of an immediate ceasefire -- as requested by the UN -- almost certainly died along with the funeral bombing, said April Longley Alley, a Yemen specialist at the International Crisis Group. And it will have longer term consequences for the potential to develop any sustainable peace plan. The attack also risks embarrassing Washington, which said it had launched an immediate review of its support for the Arab coalition. US security cooperation with Saudi Arabia is not a blank cheque, White House National Security Council spokesman Ned Price said Sunday. The US Navy said Monday that two missiles fired from rebel-held territory in Yemen fell short of a US warship patrolling the Red Sea coastline. The USS Mason detected two inbound missiles within an hour of each other from around 7:00 pm (1600 GMT) on Sunday, said US Naval Forces Central Command spokeswoman Paula Dunn. The destroyer had been conducting routine operations in international waters at the time. Both missiles impacted the water before reaching the ship, said Dunn, adding that there were no injuries to our sailors and no damage to the ship. Also on Monday, the Riyadh-led coalition accused the rebels of firing a ballistic missile towards the southwestern Saudi city of Taif, hundreds of kilometres (miles) from the Yemeni border.Yemeni loyalist forces meanwhile said three pro-government fighters were killed overnight by mistake in an air strike by the Saudi-led coalition. |
House speaker won't 'defend' Trump, as Clinton poll lead grows Posted: DETROIT (AFP) - Donald Trumps presidential aspirations took more tough hits Monday as the nations top elected Republican all but conceded the race to Hillary Clinton, who returned to the campaign trail invigorated by polls showing her lead expanding. With Trumps campaign already teetering on the precipice after revelations of his lewd comments about women, House Speaker Paul Ryan told fellow Republican lawmakers that he could no longer defend Trump, and that the priority now was maintaining the partys control of Congress. As Trump and Clinton headed Monday to key swing states after their fiery debate clash, with 29 days to go until Election Day, Ryan said he would not campaign with or for the provocative New York real estate mogul for the remainder of the race.He will spend his entire energy making sure that Hillary Clinton does not get a blank check with a Democrat-controlled Congress, said a source on Ryans conference call with lawmakers. You all need to do whats best for you in your district, Ryan said, effectively giving cover to lawmakers considering severing ties with the controversial GOP flagbearer.Trump quickly fired back on Twitter, saying Ryan should spend more time on balancing the budget, jobs and illegal immigration and not waste his time on fighting Republican nominee.Ryans move sent the already unprecedented 2016 race into uncharted waters, as Trump grapples with the fallout from his own remarks and the wave of Republican lawmakers who have already abandoned him, including some who have urged him to step aside.Trumps candidacy suffered a crippling blow after a 2005 tape was released Friday in which he made lewd comments about women, including his ability to grab them by the crotch with impunity because, as a celebrity, you can do anything.A new NBC News - Wall Street Journal poll, conducted after the video was released but before Sundays debate, showed Clinton with an 11-point lead in a four-way election -- 46 percent to 35 percent -- and a 14-point lead in a head-to-head match-up.Trumps running mate Mike Pence, who earlier condemned Trumps remarks as offensive, was one of the few Republicans who offered his full-throated support on Monday, saying the nominee was a big man to apologize.Im honored to be standing shoulder to shoulder with him, Pence said.Clinton and Trump sparred in Sundays town hall-style debate, which was a study in heated personal attacks and a stark reminder of the divisiveness that has come to mark the presidential race. Before an estimated 66.5 million television viewers and a live audience including Bill Clinton and three women who have accused the former president of sexual misconduct, Trump threatened to jail his Democratic rival and lobbed incendiary allegations against her husband. The 70-year-old real estate mogul apologized for locker room talk in which he bragged about groping women. But he stated baldly that Bill Clinton was abusive to women.Asked repeatedly and directly if he had ever kissed or groped women without their consent, Trump finally answered: No, I have not.Shattering the last vestiges of political decorum, Trump threatened the 68-year-old former secretary of state -- whom he accused of having hate in her heart -- with imprisonment if he wins the presidency. On Monday, Trump doubled down on his pledge to investigate his rival if he wins, despite the suggestion being roundly denounced when he uttered it in the debate.Special prosecutor here we come, Trump sneered at a rally in Ambridge, Pennsylvania.Trump also took his assault on Bill Clinton a step further, branding him a predator and threatening to stay on the attack if more damning video about Trump emerges. If they want to release more tapes... well continue to talk about Bill and Hillary doing inappropriate things, Trump said.He also sent a dark warning about the November 8 election, telling supporters it was so important that you watch other communities, because we do not want this election stolen from us.Clinton meanwhile visited Detroit, Michigan, where she criticized Trump for deflecting responsibility for his past misogynistic statements.During the debate, Donald Trump spent his time attacking when he should have been apologizing, she said.Meanwhile, as Trumps campaign was scrambling to avoid a full-on implosion, Ryans move triggered exasperation among some conservatives. We cant even unify around the concept of defeating Democrats? What good are we? Rush Limbaugh, a leading conservative talk radio host, said Monday. |
Taliban attack in southern Afghan city kills 14: officials Posted: KABUL (AFP) - Taliban insurgents trying to seize a southern Afghan city killed 14 people including 10 policemen in a coordinated attack which started with a car bombing Monday, officials said. The assault was the militants latest attempt to capture the besieged Helmand provincial capital of Lashkar Gah after they gradually expanded their foothold across the opium-rich province. The enemy attacked to breach the security belt in Lashkar Gah this morning, but the attack was repelled by Afghan security forces, said interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi. He said seven militants were killed but did not give a figure for other deaths. An official source told AFP on condition of anonymity that, apart from the insurgents, 14 people including 10 police were killed and 10 wounded. The early-morning attack began with a car bombing in an attempt to break through the security belt, a security source and local residents told AFP.They seized a check post for an hour before they were pushed back by Afghan special forces, said a local elder, Maulawi Hanafi. The Taliban have waged an insurgency against the western-backed Kabul government since being toppled from power by a US-led invasion in 2001. They have intensified attacks across the war-torn country in recent months, pressuring Afghan forces stretched on multiple fronts. In addition to Lashkar Gah, the militants have attempted to overrun other provincial capitals, from Kunduz and Baghlan in the north to Farah in the west in recent days, but Afghan forces have managed to repel the attacks.Afghanistan on Friday marked the 15th anniversary of the invasion. The campaign has become Washingtons longest military intervention since Vietnam. |
Russia, Turkey sign pipeline accord after crisis Posted: ISTANBUL (AFP) - Russia and Turkey on Monday signed an agreement to build a gas pipeline under the Black Sea, as President Vladimir Putin and Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to intensify relations after a bitter crisis.Making his first visit to Turkey since the shooting down of a Russian war plane by Turkey led to the worst dispute between Ankara and Moscow since the Cold War, Putin said the two countries could now return to cooperation in all areas.Only a few months ago, the two post-imperial strongmen were exchanging bitterly personal accusations. But this was already the pairs third meeting after a June agreement to normalise ties.I have full confidence that the normalisation process between Turkey and Russia will swiftly continue, said Erdogan.Showing that any personal animosity was over, Putin thanked Erdogan for the attention Mr President has devoted to the development of Turkish-Russian relations. The centrepiece of the one-day visit was the signing of an agreement on realising the construction of the planned TurkStream gas pipeline to pump Russian gas through two lines under Turkish waters in the Black Sea towards Europe. The chief executive of Russian gas giant Gazprom, Alexei Miller, said in a statement that the inter-governmental agreement had created the legal basis for the project after a previous memorandum of understanding from 2014.He added that the annual capacity of each line is to be 15.75 billion cubic metres of gas (bcma), making a total capacity of over 30 bcma.He added the first line of the gas pipeline will be used to transport gas to Turkish consumers and the second to Europe. They should both be built by 2019, he said. The plan to build TurkStream was dramatically announced by Putin in December 2014 in Ankara, as a replacement for the South Stream pipeline that was to have been built in cooperation with EU countries.South Stream was scrapped after years of planning, with Putin angrily blaming Brussels for its failure. But then TurkStream was plunged into uncertainty by the November 2015 warplane crisis. The agreement signed in Istanbul represents a concrete symbol of the desire of both parties to bring the much-discussed TurkStream project to fruition.Erdogan also said the two sides agreed to speed up a plan for Russia to build Turkeys first nuclear power plant in Akkuyu on the Mediterranean.I believe that the time that has been lost will be compensated in the coming period, he said. The two countries still face a major task to raise relations to the level enjoyed before the jet crisis.Economic sanctions imposed by Russia -- now gradually being lifted -- have severely dented trade. And a ban on charter flights to Turkey, which is also now over, reduced the usually substantial flow of Russian tourists to a trickle. Putin said that the Russian government had on Monday decided to open the Russian market to key Turkish agricultural products, including citrus fruits. He also said Moscow had agreed to reduce the price of natural gas imported by energy-poor Turkey.Russia and Turkey remain at odds over the Syria conflict, with Moscow a key backer of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, whose exit from power is Turkeys key strategic aim.But Turkey, which just months ago was loudly accusing Russia of war crimes in Syria, has been remarkably tight-lipped over the Syrian regimes onslaught on rebel-held areas of Aleppo in recent weeks, as ties with Moscow have tentatively improved.Analysts have long noted an ability on the part of Moscow and Ankara to show pragmatism in times of good relations and push disputes to one side.In his speech to the World Energy Congress before their bilateral talks, Erdogan complained how a child in Aleppo only sees bombs dropped by helicopters and planes that target them but made no mention of Russia or the Assad regime. Both leaders agreed to work together to ensure aid can reach Aleppo. They made no mention of their differences on the Syria conflict or of any breakthrough. But Erdogan said Turkey and Russia had to find a strategy to help the people of Aleppo, adding that he and Putin had agreed to instruct their foreign ministries, military and intelligence services to work on this. Putin added: We have a common position that we need to do everything to deliver humanitarian aid to Aleppo. The question is just of ensuring the security of those deliveries. |
At least 1.4 million need aid in Haiti after Matthew: UN Posted: PORT-AU-PRINCE (AFP) - Haiti faces a humanitarian crisis that requires a massive response from the international community, the United Nations chief said Monday, with at least 1.4 million people needing emergency aid following last weeks battering by Hurricane Matthew. The storm left at least 372 dead in the impoverished Caribbean nation, with the toll likely to rise sharply as rescue workers reach more areas. Matthew leveled homes, fouled water sources and killed livestock, with victims pleading for aid to arrive quickly. The United Nations has launched a $120 million flash appeal to cover the needs in Haiti for the next three months.A massive response is required, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told reporters. Some towns and villages have been almost wiped off the map, he said. These numbers and needs are growing as more affected areas are reached. After pummeling Haiti on October 4 as a monster Category 4 storm, packing winds of 145 miles (230 kilometers) per hour, Matthew slammed into the southeastern United States, where it killed 20 people. In Haiti, more than 300 schools have been damaged, while crops and food reserves have been destroyed, Ban said.UN aid chief Stephen OBrien said the hurricane had triggered the worst humanitarian crisis in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake. The department of Grande Anse in Haitis southwest, which took a direct hit, was the most devastated area, with 198 dead, 97 injured and 99,400 people staying in temporary shelters.More than 175,500 are in shelters elsewhere in the country.Deliveries of supplies were hamstrung by cut roads and communications.I understand of course the frustration, Jean-Luc Poncelet, the country representative for the UNs World Health Organization, said after arriving at the airport outside Jeremie, one of the worst-hit cities. But, he said, the storms impact in the south and west of the Tiburon Peninsula had been really catastrophic. When you have no means of communication, no radio, no telephone, no roads and even a helicopter cant land -- this is what explains the massive delay, he told AFP.American military helicopters were unloading boxes of supplies from the United States Agency for International Development to be stored by the UN in Jeremie before being taken to other parts of the south for distribution. An official at the airport who declined to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the media said nearly 20 tons of supplies -- tarpaulins, rice, cooking oil and hygiene kits -- were being brought in.That added to 47 tons already brought in by US military helicopters from the capital Port-au-Prince.But getting aid to Haitians now reduced to drinking unclean water and living in roofless houses will be challenging. On a main road crossing the mountainous center of the peninsula, residents of some villages blocked roads with trees, rocks and other storm debris in an effort to stop aid convoys from passing through without delivering supplies.Haiti began a three-day period of mourning on Sunday, as it grapples with a worsening cholera outbreak in the storm-hit areas.Matthew hit when Haitians were already struggling with the intestinal disease spread by contaminated food and water, with more than 500 new cases each week.UN peacekeepers have been blamed for introducing the disease to Haiti, where it has killed 10,000 people since October 2010.While some towns and villages reported an apparent spike in infections since the storm, Poncelet said the number of cases of cholera that we have confirmed are low.He declined to give a number, but said there were tens of cases in one area of the peninsula.Still, he said the World Health Organization had to be careful about cholera and other diseases that cause diarrhea, leading to victims becoming dangerously dehydrated.Though evaluation teams were still working to get a precise picture of the health situation, medical supplies were being brought in for quicker distribution, he said. The population is very anxious, Poncelet said. They havent had any systematic support over the last days, he said.Mourad Wahba, the UN humanitarian coordinator in Haiti, warned that the emergency response should focus on delivering aid to smaller rural communities, where many families survive by subsistence farming and have had all their crops washed away.If aid is only delivered to cities such as Jeremie and Les Cayes, the rural population will flock there for supplies and never leave, leading to unchecked overcrowding. We must think about developing a plan, to coordinate support and deliver it where its most needed and not where its easiest to access, Wahba said. |
Samsung halts sale and exchange of Note 7 Posted: SEOUL (AFP) - Samsung Electronics on Tuesday called a worldwide halt to the sale and exchange of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, citing continued safety concerns, and advised all customers to stop using the device immediately. The dramatic warning came in a written statement issued a little over a month after the worlds largest smartphone maker announced a global recall of 2.5 million Note 7s in 10 markets following complaints that its lithium-ion battery exploded while charging. The unprecedented recall was a major PR blow for the South Korean conglomerate which prides itself on innovation and quality, and the situation only worsened when reports emerged a week ago of replacement phones also catching fire.Tuesdays statement was the first formal acknowledgement of continued safety concerns and came a day after Samsung acknowledged it was easing production of the flagship smartphone.Because consumers safety remains our top priority, Samsung will ask all carrier and retail partners globally to stop sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note 7 while an investigation is taking place, the statement said.Analysts noted that the move came a little late given that a number of major distributors -- US telecom firm AT&T and German rival T-Mobile -- unilaterally announced a halt to sales and exchanges of the model on Sunday.Samsung said its investigation of the recently reported cases involving the Note 7 was being carried out in cooperation with the relevant regulatory bodies in those markets where the recall was ordered. In the meantime, the company advised any consumer with an original or replacement Galaxy Note 7 to power down and stop using the device immediately.Analysts have suggested that Samsung, battling ever-fiercer competition in the saturated smartphone market, may have rushed production of the Note 7 with bitter rival Apples recently released iPhone 7 in mind. The top-of-the-line Note 7 was crucial to Samsungs growth plans this year, with the company struggling to boost sales, squeezed by Apple in the high-end sector and Chinese rivals in the low-end market, as profit has stagnated. The trouble with the Note 7 and the handling of the recall, which analysts say could cost up to $2.0 billion, has shone a spotlight on Samsungs management at a time when it is navigating a tricky generational power transfer within its founding Lee family.Industry experts have criticised the Lee dynasty for controlling the vast group through a complex web of cross-shareholdings, even though they directly own only about five percent of total stocks. And Samsung is also under pressure from one of its shareholders, the activist US hedge fund Elliott Management run by billionaire Paul Singer. In a detailed proposal unveiled last week, Elliott laid out a strategy for streamlining Samsung, splitting the company in two, dual-listing the resulting operating company on a US exchange and paying shareholders a special dividend of 30 trillion won ($27 billion).Elliott argued that Samsung, currently a maze of listed and unlisted companies with a notoriously opaque ownership and management structure, had suffered from a long-term undervaluation in the equity market.Despite all its problems, Samsung on Friday issued a stronger-than-expected operating profit forecast for the third quarter, thanks largely to strong sales of memory chips and OLED display panels. |
US oil prices close at $51.35 a barrel, highest for 2016 Posted: NEW YORK (AFP) - US oil prices finished at their highest level of 2016 Monday after President Vladimir Putin said Russia was ready to align with OPECs push to limit oil output.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for November delivery jumped $1.54 to $51.35 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the highest closing price since July 2015.Putin said Russia would support the agreement in principle reached last month by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to limit output. OPEC is scheduled to meet in November to hash out details of the agreement. In the current situation, we believe a freeze or a cutting of the production of oil is the only way to preserve the stability of the energy sector and accelerate a rebalancing of the market, Putin said at the World Energy Congress in Istanbul.Russia is prepared to join joint measures limiting production and calls on other exporting countries to do the same, he added.Carl Larry of Frost & Sullivan said Russian support was critical to the deals prospects for turning the oil market around after a two-year slump. The Saudis could talk it up, but unless they had Russia working with them a deal would not happen, Larry said. Soon as Russia is in, this is a big deal going on.Oil prices were further propelled by remarks from Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih predicting oil prices could rise further. We are seeing the convergence of supply and demand, al-Falih said. It is not unthinkable we could see $60 (a barrel) by the year end. |
England coach urges Buttler to stay out of trouble Posted: CHITTAGONG (AFP) - England cricket coach Trevor Bayliss said Monday he hoped captain Jos Buttler would stay out of trouble after he was given an official warning for his on-field behaviour during Sundays 34-run loss to Bangladesh. The International Cricket Council (ICC) cautioned Buttler over his reaction to Mashrafe Mortaza and Sabbir Rahmans celebrations following his dismissal after a TV review which proved to be decisive. After England made a poor start in their reply to Bangladeshs total of 238-8, Buttler was threatening to turn the match on its head with a run-a-ball innings of 57 which was ended in controversial fashion. The on-field umpire had initially turned down Taskin Ahmeds lbw appeal against Buttler, but Bangladesh sought a television review which confirmed the ball hit him plumb in his back foot and left England 123-7.The verdict triggered lively celebrations in the Bangladesh camp, with several players exchanging words with the batsman as he made his way back to the pavilion, forcing the umpires to immediately intervene. It is not the first time we have seen it in international cricket and probably wont be the last, Bayliss told reporters in Chittagong. He (Buttler) got a slap on the wrist and I am sure he will be doing his best to stay out of trouble in the future. The 53-year-old said the electric atmosphere in the sub-continent often brings out extra passion in a tense game.I think when playing in the sub-continent with the crowds and the heat and that type of thing some of these things can get out of proportion a little bit.We have got to be on the look out to make sure it does not distract us from the way we want to play the game and concentrating on what we do.Bayliss added that he had nothing against standing up for oneself and the team in the right way.I dont encourage it but that is human nature. The way in which we react and what we might say in those heated situations is what the ICC are trying to crack down on and rightly so.It is in front of a worldwide audience and we are all there as role models for the young kids coming through, he said.I have nothing against questioning or standing up for yourself but just the way we do approach it and what we do say.The ongoing three-match ODI series is currently locked at 1-1 after England won the first match by 21 runs and Bangladesh levelled with a 34-run win in the second match. The two teams on Monday reached the southeastern port city of Chittagong, where the third and final match of the series will be held on Wednesday.Bayliss hoped that the crucial last match will not be affected by the incident. It is a deciding game. I dont think that incident in the last game will have too much effect. They are professional players. They have all been through it before.I think if anyone gets caught up in that type of thing I think it will be an advantage to the other team. |
Bangladesh skipper fined over Buttler bust-up Posted: DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza and batsman Sabbir Rahman were fined 20 percent of their match fees Monday for an altercation with rival skipper Jos Buttler in their teams victory over England in the second ODI.The International Cricket Council also gave Buttler an official warning for his reaction to Mortaza and Sabbirs celebrations following his dismissal after a TV review which proved to be pivotal in Sunday nights match in Dhaka. The Bangladesh players overstepped in their celebration of Jos Buttlers wicket, which prompted an inappropriate reaction from the dismissed batsman, match referee Javagal Srinath said in a ICC statement. We all want to see high intensity on the field of play, but only as long as it is not provoking or antagonising or disrespecting the opponent. After the match, Buttler said he regretted his on-field reactionEmotions were running high and obviously (they were) delighted to get the wicket. Maybe I should have just walked off, Buttler told reporters. The ongoing three-match ODI series is currently locked at 1-1 after England won the first match by 21 runs and Bangladesh levelled with a 34-run win in the second match. |
Bangladesh detains Indian over illegal cricket gambling Posted: DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladesh cricket authorities said Monday they have detained an Indian for suspected links with illegal gambling operations during a cricket series between Bangladesh and England. The suspect was detained during Fridays first one-day international of the controversial tour, held despite the countrys deadliest terror attack on a Dhaka cafe in July. Our anti-corruption officials found his movements suspicious so they detained him and handed him over to local police, said Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) spokesman Jalal Yunus.Gambling is illegal in Bangladesh, whose cricket authorities threw out four Indian nationals last year for suspected involvement during a Twenty20 tournament.Local police official Bhuiyan Mahboob Hossain said the suspect had been handed to the Indian High Commission after being interrogated, and had not been charged.England agreed to tour Bangladesh only after the Bangladeshi authorities promised unprecedented security during the month-long tour. The three-match ODI series is currently locked at 1-1 after England won the first match by 21 runs and Bangladesh levelled with a 34-run win in the second match. The two teams will head now to Chittagong, where the third and final match of the series will be held on Wednesday. The teams will also play two Tests. |
Ashwin six-for puts India in firm control Posted: INDORE (AFP) - Wily off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin backed himself Monday to outfox any batsman in the world after his six wickets in the third and final Test against New Zealand put India in pole position to complete a whitewash. Ashwin, who is the leading wicket-taker in the series with 20 dismissals, was again the standout performer as the hosts bowled out the tourists for 299 and secured a 258-run lead on day three of the match.India, who did not enforce the follow-on, were 18 for no loss in their second innings at stumps, with Murali Vijay (11) and Cheteshwar Pujara (1) stretching the lead to 276.Opener Gautam Gambhir retired hurt on six after aggravating a shoulder injury, which he first suffered while fielding, as he dived into his crease to avoid a run-out.Earlier Ashwin ensured that India continued their domination of the series at their newest Test venue, Indores Holkar Stadium, after recording his 20th five-wicket haul to destroy the New Zealand batting. It is pretty special (five-for). It is very important for me to get into a good rhythm... once I get into that good rhythm I think I can beat any batsman in the world: thats where I stand right now, he told reporters.Opener Martin Guptill, who struck form with a gritty 72, and James Neesham (71) put up the main resistance against an inspired Indian attack. The Black Caps, who began the day on 28 without loss, had made a strong start in response to Indias commanding first innings score of 557 for five declared, but then lost five wickets for just 30 runs. After Tom Latham fell just before lunch for 53, caught and bowled by Ashwin, India turned the screws on the visitors by taking a further five wickets in the afternoon session.Guptill counter-attacked with 10 fours and two sixes during his 144-ball stay but was unlucky to be run out by Ashwin while backing up.Ashwins other victims included New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, who was bowled for eight after dragging a turning delivery onto his stumps. It was the third time in a row that the Black Caps star batsman had been dismissed by Ashwin.I came into the series with a plan, especially taking off from where Kane Williamson got out in Bangalore when they came here last time in 2012, said Ashwin. He lunged forward and got out at slip. He just lunges outside off stump so thats one thing I thought I would repeat in good certainty in the series.Neesham and B.J. Watling put on 53 for the sixth wicket to raise hopes of a revival, but left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja broke the stand by bowling Watling for 23 after the wicketkeeper-batsman had struck four boundaries.Neesham carried on the good work after tea to register his fourth Test fifty in 10 games but ran out of steam after being trapped lbw by Ashwin, who soon wiped out the tail.I think New Zealand has definitely batted well. They have been in the game more than any other team has been when they toured here, said Ashwin, praising the fighting quality of the opposition batsmen.Indian skipper Virat Kohli had played a vital role Sunday with a career-best 211, his second double-century in Tests.Kohlis record 365-run fourth-wicket stand with Ajinkya Rahane (188) was the highlight of Indias first innings after the hosts elected to bat first.India, who took an unassailable 2-0 lead in Kolkata, are looking to complete their second successive home series whitewash against New Zealand. |
